    Hi, I was honored to see myself mentioned in this great video. Don't know what to make of it but it's awesome. To be honest I don't yet understand everything you laid out but it's very motivating.
    I was wondering if you would have any thoughts on a whistler called Ralph Giese. He has a ton of short videos on TH-cam and he has a very unique palatal whistling style that I'm experimenting with.
    There's a distinct lack of any whistling resources online for advanced things but I'm hoping your skills could shed some light.

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the amazing contributions to whistling and beatboxing, I'm happy the video was motivating! Sadly some of the specifics presented are off here, but hopefully the main idea that there's only 3 ways anyone can whistle abstractly got across. If you're familiar with programming, it's like there are 3 interfaces and every whistle implements some intersection of them.
      Ralph Giese is strong. The timbre and pitch control are phenomenal. His attack is also incredibly sharp. From a mechanistic perspective, it seems he's doing the same whistle as Heartzel, though there are instances where it sounds like the chamber shifts to the alveolar. If you have some free time, I'd be glad to get in touch and discuss more on Discord.

    Have you seen/learned the polytonal version of a normal pucker whistle? I've seen a few versions of it, one is where you use your tongue to split the tone and an other was to put your tongue in between your lips and whistle through the corners of your mouth. I haven't seen anybody do it in beatboxing but there's a few videos on youtube of people doing it. Thought it might be interesting.

    • @kindreon

      Glad to hear your interest! I've lost count of how many 2 or 3 note polyphonic whistles with pucker I know now. Yuki was planning to make some tutorials on them, but we've both been quite busy. Fundamentally, it's about constructing chambers with different resonant frequencies and surprisingly overlapping chambers seems to work. Something something differential equations. • @cofiddle
    @cofiddle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    5:29 this is the only whistle I get out of the palatal family. It really relies on air hitting my bottom lip, because if I move it, the tone stops or becomes barely audible. Feel stuck with this

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's actually a twist to the palatal family I missed in this video. Waiting on some free time, but I've got a followup coming up that may help with your stuck.

  • @soma5325
    @soma5325 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    i have another question out of a ton i already asked lmao. why are diapole whistles so much louder than monopole whistles? do you think its because of the sink has to be almost perfect and too much air causes it to go away?

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Idk if that's necessarily true like vortex is really loud, but I get what you mean. The common pit mechanism for dipole whistles, which I drew a bit incorrectly in the video, seems to allow more pressurized or faster airstreams. I'd guess the greater kinetic energy from the stream then converts to higher wave amplitude or volume.

  • @soma5325
    @soma5325 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    at 6:32 i do that whistle with the sink between the alveolar ridge and postalveolar slope. the source is in the same spot. is it still the same whistle? im asking because the way i learned it, everyone said it was the ralik whistle as it shows at 6:32 but the diagram is a bit different. kinda just asking for clarification or something like that

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's probably Heartzel's whistle, which some people including Heartzel call the Ralik whistle while DjB3AN calls the one in my video the Ralik whistle. 🤷‍♂️ Basically there's a more advanced concept here I didn't include. If you'd like to learn about it, feel free to hop into my Discord server and ping in #music.

  • @poopclanproductions2022
    @poopclanproductions2022 ปีที่แล้ว

    Last question I swear. What do you think the machanics of the poh snare/whistle are? Is it produced from the two streams of air colliding?

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty confident it's a type of mixed or dipole whistle where the edges of the pucker sheer the airflow to create the vortices. You can do it with just 1 airstream like I showed on my TikTok by going horizontally and using the pit mechanism from this video. When you do it vertically, I'd guess the 2 airstreams push against each other with alternating dominance like the pressure alternation from the abstract edge tone explanation in this video. You do get a fuller sound than the pit version maybe because the position is more open vertically allowing for some monopole characteristics via Helmholtz resonance.

      @kindreon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd love to, but I'm too weak and busy now to make over 100 whistle tutorials. Instead, if you learn the concepts I discussed, most of them can be figured out easily. For example, I only knew 4 whistles about 1.5 months before posting this video. 🙂
      Trivia: the demonstration stops at 99 techniques because I originally wanted a smaller number for the thumbnail and ran out of beatboxers and animals for names. There's a group of really weird or hard techniques not included like polyphonic Ball-Zee laser or lip warbling inward Heartzel whistle with inward bass. I'm planning to make specific tutorials for these, so I hope you'll watch when I post.

    Hey harvest, I was wondering if you knew how I can increase my range of sound for whistling. I want to be able to clearly whistle higher and lower notes but can't figure out the configuration of my mouth and tongue to do so

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on which whistle and the natural limits of your vocal system. If monopole, it's about increasing or decreasing chamber volume. This affects the resonant frequency similar to how it works with overtones. You may also crack into a higher register as you shrink the chamber, what I called harmonic whistles. Dipole whistles change pitch based on the size of the pit, sadly my diagram had a bug. Also check out Yuki Takeda who's whistle control is insane. Feel free to hop on Discord if you'd like to chat more.

      @@kindreon Thank you for your help! Maybe eventually. I'm at the end of my double voice tutorial but next are inward bass, pressure theory, and zipper theory so it'll be a while.
      For now, D-Koy described it as similar to BallZee's tooth laser whistle, but when vocalized or lip rolled it sounds like a tongue-alveolar whistle, so it's confusing since it's easy to unknowingly shift between mechanisms that utilize similar parts. The geometry of their teeth is also somewhat special so a bit of thinking needs to be done.

    How is Pacmax's train whistle is gonna work if the top teeth are all the way out and the tounge is inside, when you blow it does not make any windy tone cause there is no edge ( top teeth ) What is the edge for this whistle? The pacmax's train is shown in the video!

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One pattern for many dipole whistles is that sort of "v-shape-pit" design. If you look at the diagrams I showed for the whale whistle, Mika Vilpas lip whistle, and PACMax train whistle, you should be able to notice it. I'd recommend first learning the whale whistle I gave a tutorial for, getting the feel for how the "v-shape-pit" mechanism works, then searching for that same feeling in the position from the diagram of the PACMax train whistle using short bursts of air. It's otherwise quite difficult since the way dipole whistles come together feels different compared to the way monopole whistles do.

    • @soma5325
      @soma5325 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kindreon does the airflow only go through the top? as it shows at 12:12 is that the same concept of airflow?

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soma5325 I'm not sure what you mean by top, but the airflow for PACMax's whistle is similar to what's shown @12:12 except the mouth parts involved are what's shown @13:03. Notice how @13:03 the lower lip, tongue, and alveolar ridge form a v-shaped pit. You need to squeeze the stream through that pit similar to how you squeeze the stream through the pit formed by the lower lip, tongue, and teeth @12:12. Try combining what I said here with what I said previously. Good luck!

    when I try to do edge whistles I get a windy noise and the edge (my lip) starts oscillating. Is this normal?

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, it's one way you can get a roll with them. Once you focus the edge tone, if you are able to control the lip oscillation, you'll basically be able to quickly flip the whistle on and off. This is part of the principle behind the whale variation of my mirage whistle, which I believe I do at the end of the opening demo where I sound like a 90s internet connection. Sadly, naming it mirage wasn't cool enough for people to want to learn it.

    • @kindreon
      @kindreon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poopclanproductions2022 Hard to say with braces. They can really mess up airflow in certain areas. I have a retainer, and stuff I learn with the retainer doesn't always work when I take it off so that's another possible issue. Definitely worth trying but not worth frustration if you can't get something since it can be way different once braces come off.
