    Matt - Don't jump until you do a cost analysis. I sell capital equipment and an ROI calc taking all factors into account should be mandatory! Machinery cost, raw shirt cost, consumables (INK?) power, and, the most expensive part - labor. The machine is COOL, BUT - don't let the Cool factor outweigh the business case. Just sayin'.

      Nailed it. Got to figure out cost effectiveness of outsourcing vs in-house production. To answer his question in the video (and not being close to a professional in the field), it seems like it would help grow the business if they had a greater amount of control on what they could print. And creating jobs is not a bad thing, it just has to be budgeted appropriately? Can't think of a better phrase for that at the moment.

      Also troubleshooting. We have issues with our machines a lot. It's expensive to have a tech come out and work on things. I would guess those machines are 240V as well. Running a 240 line and all that entails is another added cost.
      Lots of costs but it could still be worth it.

    • @vicnesheim302

      I've run businesses and now sell capital equipment. I know exactly NOTHING about the screen printing business. That said, business is business and there are common elements to every business to achieve an accurate COGS/CAPEX analysis and run all the numbers through a detailed business case. In almost every instance, the #1 on-going cost after machinery/equipment acquisition is labor.

  • @BonnaKelley

    I worked in a screen print shop for a long time. You have a great idea, but please before you invest in the machine, think and do research on the inks you will be using. There is a lot of red tape attached to the use and disposal of printing ink. Sorry if I am a kill joy, but hate to see you invest and find out it was a bad deal.

      what she said! this could easily become quite a burden! just outsource the work to an actual printer, it will be cheaper in the long run unless you plan on doing this full time! On top of the dryer you'll also need a dark room, wash system, exposure unit, if you are going to clean, and reuse screens.

    • @yzrider344
      @yzrider344 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Also the other equipment needed like an exposure unit, wash down sink, dark room and dryers. i've also worked in a screen printing shop for a long time working on both manual machines and automatic like the M&R 8 Color sportsman (great machine btw). They really aren't worth it unless your shirts are always gonna be 5+ colors with drying in between or large amount like 800 plus each day. I don't see the investment worth it.

      Couldn't have said it better, myself. Screen printing is a lot harder than it looks. Especially, with an automatic press. The one they had in the shop I briefly worked in was very confusing to begin with. I hope he sees your comment, and does the research.

    I screen print for a living. Those machines are nice but if one part breaks, the whole system is down. You have to get a curing oven too. Infrared is best. Also a wash/chemical sink, exposure unit, dark room and of course the screens. I'm sure you know this. The whole end of the warehouse will be dedicated. Anyway, Good luck!

    My mom has embroidery business and designing stuff is the hardest part of it she spends about 90% of her time doing it and designing screens is harder than that. The programs also are big bucks too. Maybe even more than the machine cost. I would look into that before you just jump in.

  • @iXbirdmanX
    @iXbirdmanX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Matt also think about with getting the printer you have to have a setup to make the screens as well, which would involve buying screens, screen dryers, you'd have to have wash out booths for the screens, a light exposure machine, etc. Just trying to give you a little extra info to help you make youre decision. Im also guessing you can just have the screens made for you.

  • @scene24man
    @scene24man 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yo matt you can get into the printing biz a little cheaper than buying a big automated printer right off the bat. It’s more work and smaller scale but a manual type screen printer. But there’s a bunch of other stuff like designer, computer/printer for the positives, the screens, storage closet for the screens, printer, dryer, then the wash basin for the screens, all the chemicals for washing ink/emulsion, oh yeah the exposure box, storage shelves for the ink... and THEN there’s the learning curve, figuring out how to do it, what can go wrong, how it goes wrong, how to avoid messing stuff up...
    It’s fun and rewarding though, you can do it!

  • @Billybillybillyrocking
    @Billybillybillyrocking 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    If you have a local t shirt supplier that makes great quality for a fair price then don't get a printer. But if their isn't a supplier within 2 hours of you, or the quality isnt the best for the price then look more into a printer. Mainly because you choose the quality and time frame of course, but it also helps regular inventory. Certain sizes sell out first, and ordering takes time cuz they fit restock into their regular schedule. Their are pluses and minuses of each. Just have to look at the cost and time of getting materials, packaging, labor, equipment, and time. If they can benefit you in a long term basis then do it.

    Save the printer until you're ready to expand from flogging your own merch to signed-up 2 or 3 other TH-camrs to sell merch for.... and even then for the cost of the thing you'd probably have to include Roman + Alex + Furious Pete + Lunkers among your clients to supply merch for, and maybe even ask Taras Kul + the Backyard Scientist guy to see if they'd be interested in having some merch made for their channels.

    DO NOT buy a screen printer. You will never do (or sell) the volume necessary to justify the expense of the equipment & cost of operation (I know...I owned an offset/commercial/screen printing business). I don't even think Roman Atwood could justify such an expense.

    • @katiejean011
      @katiejean011 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tully3674 I think Roman outsources his products so they are basically just a packaging center. I think Matt has a slightly different vision for his company. He did say before he wants the company to be as big as possible so who knows maybe it will work out with a screen printer.

    I used to do inventory stuff for toys r us. Our bays were like AA01F02
    AA would be the area like the Wing? We would have AA/BB/CC/DD for like 3 "wings" upstairs and 1 smaller downstairs area.
    The first 01 would be the aisle in that wing, probably around 2-4. Next the F would be each bay. Could be multiple shelving in each bay. The last 02 would be which shelf from top to bottom.
    So for AA01F02 You would go to the AA section of the warehouse then go to the first aisle 01. Then you would walk down the aisle until you get to F then your item would be on the second shelf. Pretty cool
    We could have daily "cycle counts" to do in the morning. It would pick random things to inventory so make sure our counts are accurate.

    Do not buy a printer. Added costs of employees, designers and yearly software upgrades could make the investment for a machine and support supplies (ie ink,screens , cleaning and drying areas ) a losing proposition. Start up costs for a shirt printing business can be high.

    I've been in the textile printing and graphic design business on and off for years. Jumping straight in to buying an automated press with no experience could possible be a mistake. You obviously need to get your ducks in order before you pull the trigger. You need at least one artist (able to produce art specifically for T-shirt design and color separations), a reliable printing supply distributor, chemical area for reclaiming/coating/cleaning screens. Burn station for exposing emulsions, etc etc etc.. you will very likely need to hire someone that has experience. It can be a big hassle but it can also be a lot of fun with the right people. You may want to consider checking Craigslist for used equipment. Also consider a manual press to start with to learn the process. All in all, if everything goes sideways, you can sell your equipment and come out of the venture relatively unscathed. Good luck!

YOU have to be able to maintain your inventory before you have to worry about that part. you're going about it a little bass ackwards. The shirts only need a screen for each color. i used to print for a screen printing company in Knoxville that printed all of the coke machine sides and the lettering behind the buttons and we also did semi truck trailer side decals and you have to have not just the printer but also a screen making set up also and be able to separate everything into a different screen for each color. the UV Dryer is something that only came about at the end of the 90's before that it was all done with conventional inks and heat dried*

    The screen printing machine is cool but you still have to load the shirts and ink. All the machine really does is rotate the paddles and move the squeegee. Since you have someone there loading the machine already I'd look into the good old manual screen printer. You trade speed for cost effectiveness but you can always upgrade to the auto later and then you'd have the manual as a back-up. Also it's looks like you're shifting gears in the warehouse. If you have the time I'd suggest looking into a TPS (Toyota Production System). Using kanbans, flow racks, etc. You'll be amazed at how handy it'll be. Just scale it to your needs. Good luck.

    No, not the Humvee! But definitely get the screen printer. I worked as the graphic designer of a company that did vinyl labels and used a very similar screen printing. It's very cool to go from concept to product in one day! Go for it!

  • @Bruke53
    @Bruke53 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You will need to have screens made for each design that you make for the shirts. Machines break, and big ones like those, can often be complicated to fix, so there may be some hefty repair costs. You ought to bring someone on that has experience working in a screen printing shop. I don't know the volumes you guys work in, but I feel like you may need to increase your staff significantly, if you have any goals of printing all of your own shirts. I would be inclined to think that unless you are making thousands of any given design, it may be more cost effective to have the printing done elsewhere... Sorry for this sounding pretty negative, I tried to make it less so... I really enjoy all of your content and don't want to see it fizzle.

    I used to work as a screenprinter. It's fun, but keep in mind after you draw your design, you'll need to transfer that image onto the screen that the ink needs to go through to go on the shirt. It's been a while since I worked on the printer so I forget the term for that, but you need to look into that process if you're serious about buying a printer. I think you should!

    Shirt printer.... sounds like an RV or boat. Never buy one, you should always rent one. You have fun with it and stick the owner with the maintenance. Have your shirts pre-printed and let them worry about the labor and maintenance costs. You are not in the shirt making business, you are a vet/youtuber. Focus on what you know.

      Best fucking advice, printing is a strange world and the hidden costs overhead, Customer Service Agreements, accounting for depreciation for taxes, periodic maintenance, experienced operator to avoid eating the cost of a bad run/equipment fuck-ups... The list is long, unless you'd like to leave veterinary medicine behind or hire a production manager and sales/marketing. Just the opinion of a guy that runs maintenance for a label/die company, get competitive quotes and find a manufacturer that can run product cheap then squeeze 'em for all they're worth.

    Be sure to check out the details\steps that come before and after printing. Screen design, creating each separate screen if using multiple colors, cleaning up after printing completed. There is a lot of work pre and post printing. The actual printing is the easiest part. Go spend a day or two in a print shop and experience the entire process from design concept to cleanup...., the entire A to Z process. Then spend another few hours learning supply inventory vendors and local policies regarding potential toxic substances. It’s not unusual for new start up businesses to get the cold shoulder from some vendors...can be kind of protective of their customers in same region and not will to sell to you at needed wholesale vs retail (hobbiest) price. Remember other print shops are competitors and not often welcoming and helpful.

    I was working on a manual and half-auto printer. Only difference was that I was doing bottles, not shirts.
    But you know, basically the same thing.
    There is quite a lot of chemical stuff going on (you konw, paint and stuff, I don't know all the correct english words for all that shit :P), but i guess it will be a lot less manual in a machine like you showed us.
    Its easy really, it was like a 2 days of practice and i was doing all the work by myself.
    So if you can - go for it :)

    Don't forget about needing a dark room to prep and expose the screens. Which then needs a wash bay to clean out the design after being exposed in a light table which is usually vaccum pressed. Of course you can always out source the screens and just do the printing. Usually looking at $60 for the screens which for a front, back and sleeve design that's $180 you will have tied into screens alone. Have to sell a good number of shirts before you even start paying for the screens alone the press. Just a few things I notice being a former designer at a screen printing shop.

    With the screen printer, ur going to need screens,emulation and design. Logos and things need to be digitally traced. I used to use Adobe Illustrator. You then print a black pdf of the design and burn that into the emulsion on the screen. Then power wash the screen and the burned design part will wash away while the rest of the emulsion stays on. Then it will be ready for printing. There’s a lot that goes into the back end process before the automated machine. You probably learned all that, but maybe your viewers may find it interesting. I used to design all the way to print. Expect we had to slide the ink manually. Didn’t have a fancy machine for it.

    Hey just to let you know. Theirs alot more about screen printing than just that print machine. U have to stretch screens burn screens in and then u have each screen for each color and u can have multiple screens depending on the colors. Then ur screens only last for so many prints then u have to strip and clean and Reuben or stretch new ones as the wear out. But I almost left out the artwork for ur different layers as well. Depending on how detailed ur artwork is. U have to break it down by color separations and get that onto film to burn into ur screens on a UV light table. It is alot of fun, but is very tedeus.
