Yes that is a way of doing it Peter but it’s disturbing the rootball as little as possible I think. Perhaps I should have used a blunt blade to loosen that soil first around the sucker. I’m pretty sure this one will grow back and I’ll try again next year. But I know it’s possible to get that “pop” and the whole thing comes out from that socket. Thanks Peter ;)
0:17 Root stock, perhaps rosa multiflora, save it, graft on it March next year while dormant, then dig it out when established. Grafting is easy, razor sharp knife, angle cut on rootstock and scion rubber band them together and plaster a mix of beeswax and pine tar around it. If I remember correctly, long ago I decided against it because of low petal count, I love centifolias stuffed to the gills with petals. Yes, tomorrow is autumn equinox, alas, our plants slow down tremendously with less than 12 hours of light per day. Wow! Souhern France in April, be sure to get to the violet festival at Grasse. Long ago there were hundreds of violet growers there. Thank you Jay for the show and tell from your far distant shores! Ralph in Ohio. A final thought regarding the sucker, my 50+ years of gardening/beekeeping has taught me to, as much as possible to work WITH nature, not against it. Harness it's vigor and force to direct it's efforts and vitality into a pleasing conclusion. Let me think, what could you graft onto those suckers??? Perhaps something from southern France???? LOL!
Hi Ralph hope your well. Growing more roses from rootstock I have too many roses already :) I’ve never heard of the Parma violets I will look into to this. Thanks mate
Really like your motor home 👍🏻 Lions rose looks fantastic! Queen Bee 👍🏻 🌹❤️ one of the best for health I think. Goes wider than taller. I am so sure she will look wonderful in your garden. Thank you for sharing about suckers. Always something to learn. Thank you 🌹❤️
Champagne Moment is a lovely rose. Suckers are a real pain in the neck. I always prune my floribundas in the Spring but as my roses are in a windy place, I may need to cut them back by a third before the Winter. Thank you for the great video Jay Jay 🌹
Yes mine will get a good chop also, defo before October. I think I’ve been very lucky with suckers up until now. Next time I will try and loosen the soil a little around the sucker with a blunt blade before trying to pop it out.
@@Jay_Jay thanks Jay Jay. I'll get the pruners out next week 👍. I grow them in that spot because it gets loads of good light and sunshine, which means they don't go spindly and flop over when they flower.
@@Jay_JayPS I think the definition of agony is having to cut back a Dolce Vita rose. They literally are flower bud factories 😂. Good luck with the sucker, Jay Jay. That's a difficult one.
Brother Cadfael does have a gorgeous scent Jay Jay. Linda was saying that Elizabeth has been performing well for her too. I think I'll have to get it even though I keep saying that there's no more room in my garden! Hope you had a great break in your motorhome. It's better than my house!
Thanks lovely Wendy. Rose Elizabeth has done very well this year. Today it’s looking much better than yesterday which always seems to be the way! The one i have potted is not doing as well mind. But the one in the ground flying. :)
Curse the suckers!! That's why I prefer own root---no suckers! Grrrr! My suckers usually come from under the graft right next to it so you can't tell which is sucker & which is good; my experience is that once suckers start, that vigorous rootstock just keeps sending them up & starving the real rose. But if grafted is the only way to get the rose you want.. Your garden looks quite nice for how late it is in the season---your Cadfael is stellar., Rose Elizabeth too, & of course the Lady of Shalot. For any of your fans in the U.S., David Austin has a LOT of roses restocked that haven't been around for a while, including Brother Cadfael, and others. I want to thank you for showing how fabulous your Olivia Rose was doing in your last few videos---I'd taken your advice this summer & got me one & she is a champion bloomer! I can't believe summer is over and there won't be many more flowers---where did the time go? Your van looks lovely & comfy, just right for a trip to France!
Lovely video mate. Brother cadfael and Lady of Shalott performing well. I remember your old video of growing rose from cutting and that is great way to avoid suckers. I have rooted Jasmina, florentina, Munstead wood and Amadeus from cutting/pegging. Growth of own root Lady of Shalott is phenomenal.
Hello Jay Jay! Cool to see your motor home, it looks cozy inside. That would be an adventure to visit south of France, Meilland would be a dream place to see, I watched their channel, they are actively breeding roses which can grow in this climate change condition. Your Rose Elizabeth looks fantastic, I heard a lot of good opinions on this rose.🌹
Strange year for our Brother Cadfael, Jay. Mine must be 7 years old now and always been around 3-4ft max. This year 7ft tall and flowered prolifically.
Hi there and thanks. I did buy Carolyn knight a couple of years ago. It was planted in the ground but it didn’t do so well for me. I found in its exposed position the rain and heat affected the flowers in a very short time. I had balling pretty bad and also the heat melted them. I didn’t want to get rid because on its day amazing flowers and scent. But now it is potted in a more shaded and sheltered spot. I will see how it gets on next year. Best of luck with yours :)
@@Jay_Jay Ahh must have been an older video I saw then! I didn’t go for Carolyn Knight, I went for Jubilee Celebration and Evelyn this year - I’m guessing Evelyn will have issues too but I’m going to give it a go.

Enjoyed the walk around Jay Jay. Pleased to hear you had a nice time in Wales. Is the 20 m.p.h. max. still in opperation? I can't remember. Still got a few roses to look at; same here. Have you asked their permission to buzz off to the South of France next year. Cheers! P.
Hi Peter, yes 20mph restrictions are plentiful but not everywhere. Most of the country lanes I drive were nationals. It’s literally just in the villages themselves. We didn’t do much town driving. :)
Jay Jay I love your garden and your motor home. I have a question what is the name of the yellow flowering plant nearby the motor home? Thanks in advance.
With regard your trip to France there is a book you can buy in France which will give you all the aires de camping car and most were free. Water and toilet emptying. It’s called Aire de Service Camping Car. Although it is in French it’s quite easy to follow. We used to stay for a month at a time for a few euros. They probably charge now. Most we paid was 5 euros a night. You won’t want to visit any other country. Superb! As the French say.
Hi Marilyn and thank you I will look into this. Yes I know the facilities are way beyond anything we have here. I’m looking forward to it already :) and I have also some tales of previous visits to the area, it’s not the last you’ve seen of the Motorhome :) cross fingers.
Hope you had a nice time in wales 🏴 I’m in the south Wales. How’s that rose you got from Herefordshire after ROSE Raspberry Parfuma did it pick up for you.
Hi there. Yes we do love wales. I think it’s the 3rd time we’ve been in the past year and 3 visits next year we have planned. We go to Pembrokeshire area although this time we actually stayed in Carmarthenshire on the edge of Pembrokeshire. A lovely part of the world. Raspberry Parfuma sadly hasn’t done much for me as yet. It hasn’t even given me a decent flower yet. Just maybe half of one flower all year. That said it is still potted in its original pot and I had to cut it back…. TWICE! Because of the blind stems it gave me. But there is hope yet :) porcelain Parfuma different story. That is still in its original pot and has done extremely well.

Hi, no specific event just a visit to the Meilland rose garden probably mid to late June time hopefully. I’ve driven past it before many years ago but this time I will visit and I know some lovely beaches on that coast that I want to revisit. Where abouts are you in south west France?
Hi Jay, your ancient mariner is a beautiful rose. I was thinking of purchasing the Alnwick rose this year. I already ordered it from a rose vender here but they never sent it out, over a year ago. Now the David Austin site is open for ordering I will have to make a decision. What to do?
Hi there. I’ve seen Alnwick rose do so well stateside but I do like ancient mariner. I think a better flower than Olivia rose Austin. And it’s fragrant! In my garden it’s not perhaps as floriferous but not too far off Olivia. But the actual flowers themselves take some beating to my eye. Best of luck
Sunshine Jay Jay? Want to swap locations? Grey drizzle over here in the west, with worse to come. As I mentioned in a reply to a comment my oldest and tallest Ancient Mariner does seem to produce two main flushes with little in between, but the others below the decking flower fairly constantly, and the one on my front garden has not produced anything much since its first flush months ago - so my experience is very mixed. Lady of Shalott is a wonderful flower factory, isn't it? I wouldn't mind more of those in my garden, but my Elizabeth (which I loved last year) has not flowered that well this year - it's weird how one person's best performer is another's so-so rose, but then I suppose my varied experience with my AMs shows that one of your best roses can also be one of your worst. I had a look at Queen Bee online - it looks like a lovely rose, but I am going to have to have a serious think about my planting for next year. Your phone camera seems to be working a lot better this time, nice sharp images.
Hi nik yes I forgot to say (again) I have Elizabeth potted and it hasn’t done as well by a country mile. I really do believe some years or some spots can be only feet apart and the difference in how well they do can be huge. I’d take any of your ancient mariners mind :)
Hi, basil break is good, sucker is bad. Basil break comes from the bud Union of the rose. Sucker comes from the root stock and drains energy from your rose.
What is your experience of the baseless pots? I want to line a fence with David Austin Standards but in concerned the trunk isn’t tall enough? I was thinking about using baseless pots to raise the height of them but I don’t want to restrict the growth. Do you think baseless pots are still more restrictive than planting directly into the ground? I’ve no experience with them!
Hi there. Baseless pots I really like, they can come in very handy indeed suiting certain circumstances particularly well. Your circumstances I think will be perfect. What I will say is don’t have the soil in the pots too rich, try and get at least some native soil in there so the roots will dig down and go in search of nutrients creating a decent strong root system over a decent area. The roots of roses I’ve found can be lazy if spoilt too much. Also think of what pot you decide to cut. I have many ceramic and clay pots I have cut out big holes in the bottom. One has cracked already after two winters. The others are still perfectly good. But If I had my choice again I’d go for metal. Best of luck.
Hope you had a nice time in wales 🏴 I’m in the south Wales. How’s that rose you got from Herefordshire after ROSE Raspberry Parfuma did it pick up for you.
