Utopian: A DIY Colorado Elk Traditional Bowhunt

  • First western hunt. First backcountry experience with my dad. A pile of elk in prime habitat and not another soul present to contend with. The passion for God's incredible landscapes paired with carrying simple stick and string in pursuit of some of the most amazing critters on Earth provides all the excitement necessary. "Hardships are quickly forgotten. Intense heat, bitter cold, rain and snow, fatigue, and luckless hunting fade quickly into memories of great fellowship, thoughts of beautiful country, pleasant camps, and happy campfires." - Fred Bear

    Your old man is a beast! I hope to still be hunting and strong enough for a hunt like that at his age.

    This is it. The video I've been waiting for. I've watched too many hunting videos and this is the pinnacle of them all. Cinematography is great, nature shots are incredible, you didnt waste time talking our ears off and you used good music not crappy weird pseudo-country/rock music. You let the footage and the hunt speak for itself and it was perfect. Great work. Subbed.

    Truly glorious Countryside for an elk hunt. I can't imagine having to walk away from that... I think I'd have been wishing I had a field guide to wild edibles, or something... Anything!

    That was cool you added in the part with the pika! There’s a lot of research In Oregon going on about pikas, they are bad ass little dudes! Nice hunt guys. I can’t wait til I can walk up on a bull. Hunted quite a few years with the stick and string and still haven’t got an elk. But this year I’m hoping as usual to change that. The poor mule deer have felt my wrath

    Nice video. Sometimes you feel like the only one around, but we were there the same time as you across you. Haha
    We meet you on the trail when you were hiking out.
    You guys actually bumped the elk down to us and we harvested one. We been hunting same spot you were for last 5 years and got tags for September coming up.
    lol Good luck in future.

      I had wondered if you guys would see this. In that case you’re welcome. Haha. But what a cool place. Good luck this year! Dad and I will be hunting Oregon this year as my wife and I moved to the SW part of the state in February. Looking forward to trying to find elk in new-to-me country once again!

    Very nice video! Elk are amazingly beautiful animals. The fun ends when you get one on the ground. The area you were hunting looks like it would have been a long pack out of there. I've often wondered if there are folks around who have pack animals that would pack it out for hunters (for a fee of course). Are you going back this year?

    I hunted with trad gear for 24 years. I shot a longbow. Blew my shoulders out at work. I can no longer use trad. Both shoulders need replaced. Sadly I'll have to use a crossbow.

    • @malachinolletti
      @malachinolletti  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s actually a Kohannah longbow, built by Bob Rousselo of La Salle, MI for my dad. He struggled to shoot it well, so I inherited it haha

    Wonderful videography and an even greater father/son adventure! This exemplifies what hunting is all about perfectly. Well done man!
    What is your setup for your traditional bow? I’m looking to get back into traditional archery and want to push myself further than I did when I first started out with a recurve.

    • @malachinolletti
      @malachinolletti  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m shooting a Kohannah longbow, 59# @ 28”, a little heavier at my draw length. My dad shoots a bow built by Tom Cable of Windstorm Archery back in the day. Arrows are Doug firs from Surewood Shafts that we finish, crest, and fletch ourselves. We’ve shot cedars in the past but the quality of those has seemed to decrease so we decided to try Douglas fir and really like them, straight grained, heavier mass weight and generally much more durable.

    • @brandthomik
      @brandthomik 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@malachinolletti They are both really nice looking bows! Thank you for the information. I would eventually like to get into crafting my own arrows as well. Seems awfully satisfying
