    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured via the Mega SG/Mega SD combo.
    2. While the first here made it way to the US, part 2 on the Saturn did not.
    3. There are a few changes between the Japanese and US versions. First, Rami is much older in the US release. Second, Spot the dragon goes from being a male to a female with associated cutscenes changed to reflect that.
    4. Studio Pierrot did the cut scenes here. They were an animation studio that did countless works like Naruta and Yu Yu Hakusho. They did the work in Keio 2 as well.
    5. The UK had a magazine called Sega Pro that gave away a demo disc for this at its release. To the surprise of many, it contained the full game that was accessible thanks to the still intact stage select.
    6. The magazine review you saw here was from the US Next Generation. They had a habit of coming down hard on games that didn't break barriers or introduce anything new. Their reviews of games like Lords of Thunder and Snatcher on the Sega CD are criminal.

Yep. Any game that is 10+ years old and expensive is fair game. Nobody should have to pay through the nose to enjoy a game that isn't being offered by the original company that made it.

@@TheThatEthanGuy Abandonware is mostly a legal myth. Copyrights in the USA persist for 70 years after the death of the author if no one else has claim to it. Usually the rights to IP pass on to another person, company, or estate, keeping them active. It could be legally argued that a copyright has been abandoned if the rightsholder fails to defend it, but that's not going to happen due to individual instances of piracy.

@@cbarger2327 True abandonware is stuff that the dev has uploaded onto their own site. There are some published games, such as Super Turrican, that are completely free now but were once sold for money. But yeah. If I had known that when I was a kid and paranoid about downloading roms, I would've totally played a lot of those true abandonware titles. There are tons of gems.

Every time I see a video on this game, it kills me. As a long time collector, my biggest gaming regret is selling off my copy of Keio in the late 90s when I was in college and needed money. Im sure alot of us older gamers have stories like this, just wanted to share.

@retro game fan Oh yea, I know. Ive never collected for that reason either. Its just this one game that eludes me. Over the years, I've managed to get every single childhood game and every other game that meant anything to me back into my collection. Except this one lol. Its all about the nostalgia for me. This is the types of games I wanted to see on the SegaCD back in the day. Not necessarily the cutes-y kind. I know people call these games "carts with CD music", but that's exactly what I wanted! haha. But really, it's not exactly cart game because while it might not be immediate standout, the developers didn't design the game with cart limitations. So corners weren't cut because it was a cart - kind of thing. So what you see is what they wanted to design (on a per level basis). It would have been nice to have had the sequel on the SegaCD though.

I've never played this game, although I do know that the bunnygirl heroine (and that woman who looks like she's wearing towels who shows up in some of the cutscenes) was something that nine year-old me felt quite strange and unfamiliar about when I was reading a feature on the game in the UK Official Sega Magazine back in the Nineties...!
In all seriousness, though, a practical detail I do welcome about the actual gameplay that you mention is how you need to stop shooting to let your satellites recharge. One thing I genuinely cannot stand about shmups as a genre is that there's rarely any reason to not just lay a paperweight on top of your fire button and you have to deal with that irritating flourescent-light buzzing of endless shots in your ear throughout your whole playthrough. Something that actually incentivises you to release the trigger every now and again is all too rare and a real bonus!

I got my first Sega CD (a model 2) back around 1996 in a trade, and with all the games I have played on the system, I'll never regret owning one. These days I own a Model 1 I found at a local thrift; recently replaced the little belt inside but haven't had a problem with it. With games like this, Snatcher, Sonic CD, Earthworm Jim, Panic!, Popful Mail, the two Lunar games, the fun shooters like Android Assault, Sol Feace, Robo Aleste and more I haven't named, I can ignore the FMV crap and just go with the fun stuff.
