It’s insane that they were thinking toilets transmit diseases, but the same women were holding and kissing and feeding their children, fixing their family’s food, handling their clothing.

Don’t forget the fact that racist whites would also use black women as nursemaids. Racist whites would say blacks were to dirty to use the same bathrooms, drinking fountains and they could eat with whites because the feared disease yet they use black women breastfed their white children. It was truly the height of racist nonsense

The part where Celia suggests that if she were Minny she’d hit her abusive husband on the head with a skillet? She wasn’t kidding! In the book, there’s a scene where a white man intrudes on Celia’s property and punches Minny right where her husband punched her and pins her down as well but Celia saves Minny by whacking the intruder in the face with a fireplace poker and continues beating him with it until he leaves them alone.

      Yeah, that was badass.
The book also makes it super clear just how different she is from the others - she grew up in Sugar Ditch dirt poor, and the other women didn't respect her for being 'white trash'

The toilet thing is true. I bought a house in Memphis that was built in 1927. It had a basement, and there was a toilet down there. I asked about it, and was told that was the toilet for the help. It also had a button on the floor in the dining room that rang a bell, to call the help.

In more recent years, people have been trying to say this movie is awful and no one should watch it because it's a "white savior movie." But I watch it and I see a movie where black and white women save each other. Every one of those maids saved Skeeter. It's because of them she grew up to have good morals. It's because of them she got out of Jackson and even her relationship with her mom improved. And Minny saved Celia. You heard it from Johnny. Because of Minny, Celia got better.
This is a movie about women deciding to treat each other like equals, even if the world around them says it's wrong.

While Minnie did leave Leroy, it left out why:
Hillys husband got him fired over the book, and he locked her in the bathroom and threatened to burn the house down with her in it.
She escaped, took the kids and made a run for the nearest gas station.
She went to the country to live with her sister.

My Mom is from Texas and was born in '58. She was raised by a black nanny, Miss Virgie. I grew up in Virginia, but every time we went to Texas to see family we went and visited Miss Virgie for a couple days too. She was a second mom to my mom and a second grandma to us. I grew up with her grand children as my cousins. She passed away a good while back and I haven't been to Texas in years so lost contact with her family, but I still love all the stories my mom still tells of being raised by Miss Virgie. This movie breaks my heart to think about what it must have really been like to be "the help" in Texas in the 60's. But those women hopefully helped raise a lot of the next generation into much better people

The book is even more intense. From memory Constantine's story is even sadder I think as are most of them (Minny's in particular). She has a daughter who is extremely fair skinned and with blonde hair. This made Constantine and her child an outcast in both the white and black communities. Constantine ends up giving her daughter up for adoption. When the daughter comes to see her mother, Skeeter's mother assumes she is a white woman who has come to join the event which is happening. When she realises who she is, Skeeter's mother is furious feeling like the daughter tricked her as she assumed she was white and she was socialising with all the white people. Skeeter's mother tells constantine's daughter to get out and that constantine can never have contact with her if she stays. Unwilling to give up her daughter again, Constantine leaves.

There were even past winners and nominees in this movie; Sissy Spacek (Hilly’s mother, won Best Actress for Coal Miner’s Daughter), Mary Steenburgen (Elaine Stein, won Best Supporting Actress for Melvin and Howard) and the late great Cicely Tyson (Constantine, nominated for Best Actress for Sounder). This movie is an amazing representation of the South during that time period. What's crazy is my great grandmother , who's 105 years old today , babysat as kids, and was actually doing this type of work in the 90s! We did not understand what we were saying as children but I was so inspired to show her this movie when it came out. We live in Southern Louisiana and would actually help our great grandma with light cleaning as 8 and 9 year olds. The lady she took care was younger than she was but sickly and her children didn't really have the time to worry about her health. She made no fuss about what she was doing, and we did not realize anything until we were adults and asked questions.

Big thing with Abileen and Mae Mobley that was left out:
Abileen would play games with her to teach her life lessons.
Example: pretend to sit at a counter, and no matter what, you can't move. This was sometimes played with her brother, so he'd sit and shed throw stuff at him, or vice versa. But the objective is the same: no matter what's said or done to you, you can't move.
Another thing to note is that Mae Mobley was also starting school in the book, and she had a seriously racist teacher.
The whole thing came to a head when her dad caught her playing the above game, and angrily demanded she tell him who taught her the game.
And she said it was her teacher!

absolutely love this movie, it's so funny and emotional and thought-provoking and eye-opening. love movies like that.
it's so tragic that, while things have gotten better overall in recent decades, this kind of racism _still_ runs rampant in america. the west coast and east coast are mostly fine, to be fair, thanks to new york, california, and a few of the states surrounding them being such melting pots of races and cultures (and when i say mostly fine i don't mean it doesn't exist, rather that it's not as likely you'll encounter issues every day, the encounters still happen they're just more spread out and less life-threatening, and even them some towns/cities are worse/better than others). but unfortunately much of the south, north, and central united states are steeped in both "subtle" and blatant racism. :/ that's why movies like this that shine a bright light on the reality of life throughout history and even still today for people of color are _so_ important, as well as the inclusion of more poc in the cast of all movies and tv shows. representation and normalization, and white people calling out other white people on their behavior are _key._

Heres the bitter truth about the toilet prank:
Hilly wound up selling them all to people who wanted to get a separate bathroom for their help, for a lower price. So basically the prank not only backfired, it had the exact opposite effect.
Which Hilly made a point to tell Skeeter in front of everyone at the benefit.

Abileen takes over as the next Miss Myrna. Skeeter hands it over before leaving for New York.

The outside toilet part about this movie was straight up BS. Celia Foot and Minnie’s friendship was awesome! Celia didn’t judge anyone, especially because of color because she came from nothing. Skeeter was the same way. The way Skeeter’s mother treated Constantine in front of white women she just met for a pin after that woman raised her kids and took care of her house was seriously messed up.

You think bathroom discrimination is okay? They have all kinds of toilet 🚽 sprays on the market to help with the odor. 😂If my partner or spouse told me we couldn’t use the same bathroom I’d give them walking papers . I do think that if this movie were non fiction, and a maid had done what Minnie did with the pie, she probably would have been lynched.

3:58- I love us Southerners. "Shut that God damn door." He's right about cigarettes, they're cancer on a stick.
5:30- Look at the hairstyles and dresses, also they smoked cigarettes. Definitely 60s and 50s.
11:50- No sir that's not the point. In case you didn't hear Hilly's prejudice on us black people she thinks we have diseases. She sees us as raccoons with rabies and not human beings. Elizabeth is racist too, but she hides it the other ladies in the bridge club are racist too.
12:53- See that woman behind Skeeter, pay close attention to how she looks at Aibileen. I'm grateful I wasn't born in the 60s, I'd probably be in jail or dead. I wouldn't be able to take being seen as property.
13:42- It's funny if segregation didn't keep people separated they'd see how similar we are. Example; Minny and Elizabeth both have husbands that abuse them.
18:49- It's based off the book, I haven't read the book yet. Although this is accurate to what life was like in the 60s.
20:27- No, Crisco is shortening you use it for cooking.
29:45- Sir, did you forget Minny has an abusive husband? Elizabeth does to.
38:17- There's a deleted scene where Stuart shows his bigoted side, so this breakup is valid. Skeeter deserves better.
43:58- Typical Karen, Hilly. Ruin lives with lies to get what you want.
47:30- I could be wrong, but I think there's racism all over the globe not just here in the states. Then again I haven't been to every single country so I don't know.

Apartheid was a big deal in South Africa. And Australia has a history of racism towards aboriginals and black people as well. And England takes over every country because they think they're superior. Yes, racism is a global issue. Not just American.

I just saw this video. I enjoyed your reaction to this movie.
As much as I did that part of it, I think knowing you are a decent man, just hit me well. Yeah, the history in this world is written in blood. Much of it very fucked up and stupid as to the reasons why.
Even today, much of what is going on is incredibly stupid and fucked up. I don't understand the hatred and ignorance of many people in this world.
Unfortunately, almost all of us can look at something painful, cruel, fucked up and just sickening that our ancestors did. That some of our family and neighbors are doing today.
It makes me wish I could live in a place where I could be surrounded by good people who don't accept racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and who instead want to live in peace together and help each other and be there for one another.
I know Utopia doesn't exist. That there will always be dumb shit and drama people argue and fight about. But damn. I would rather try for Utopia and fail than accept living in hell.
I am just glad that you seem to be one of the good ones out there. It is nice to know there are some left in this world.

You seem to be confused about what playlists are for. They’re for multiple videos about the same topic or subject. You making a playlist for every individual movie is not only useless and pointless, but it’s keeping you from countless views and subs. I went to your videos tab to see what else you’ve reacted to and scrolled through a LOT of Friends. So to avoid that, I headed to your playlists. Only to find it’s the exact same thing. Scrolling through playlists of one video over and over and over. Learn why playlists exist and use them correctly. Have a Forbes season one playlist. Season two. Hogwarts Legacy playlist. If you don’t do films very often, have a film reaction playlist. If you do, make genre playlists. Horror, drama, comedy etc.
