Sally Field showed why she’s won two Oscar’s with that performance at the grave !!! An amazing actress!!! Glad you got to see her in a bigger role than she had in “Forest Gump “!!
Any movie with Sally Field is amazing. "Not Without My Daughter" is one of my favorites. "Places in The Heart" is amazing as well. She gives 100% to each role.
'Steel Magnolias' was based on a true story. Actor and writer Robert Harling wrote the play based on the true story of his sister, Susan Harling Robinson, who died from diabetic complications. This is one of the only movies that can make me laugh and cry at the same time.
Yes! The writer wanted to write this about his sister since the husband married again not long after she passed, and the writer didn't want his nephew to forget his mom. So beautiful
@@ShelbyBaby27also Susan's doctor's are the ones who treated Shelby during the life support scene and her mother stayed on set because she wanted to see Julia Roberts get up and walk away.
One of my favorite scene is when Spud decides to go with Truvy to Shelby's funeral and he asked Truvy if his tie matches his suit. At one point Spud says, "...something like that happened to me I don't know... I don't know what I'd do." Spud works so long hours but now realizes what's really important in his life and it's not his job.
Oh wow I didn’t know that but I guess they wanted it to be in the moment cause they usually do a few takes in case they need it in post but she nailed it so brilliantly and the woman’s reactions were so great and natural that they were probably like that’s it, cut and print! 🥹
One of the main points was portraying the strength of the women. The author, "Shelby's" brother, wanted to tell about all the strong women in his life, and how they handled the death of his sister. This is how the movie got the name "Steel Magnolias." It's about being feminine and being strong.
I refused glassed when I found out I needed them in 8th grade, 1975. I got contacts... hard lenses were the only ones available and they hurt so much. They did come in amazing colors, so I had deep blue eyes with red instead of white eyeballs. They popped out easily and we're expensive so, yes, everything stopped so the search for the missing lense could go on. I switched to glasses due to the discomfort until soft lenses came out in the 80s. Those were amazing. They even came out with some you could wear a couple weeks at a time, what a blessing to wake and see a clock in middle of night without having to search for glasses. They were removed from market due eye infections. I eventually had to stop contacts about 10 years ago due to dry eyes and autoimmune diseases. Now I'm going to get to have good eyesight without glasses due to cataracts...
I actually made the decision for my wife when it was determined that the doctors couldn't help her. Her family knew I would do what was best for her and my wife and I had talked about what we wanted if we were only going to be kept alive by machines. I cannot express what it meant to have her family's trust in that moment. I will also never get over having to make the decision to give my wife peace and let her go. It is something you live with forever.
I feel ya, brother. I had to go through the same thing two years ago. Though we weren't married yet, the family had come to the decision to pull the plug but they wanted me to have the final say. I agreed. I held her as she passed away. If I live to be a hundred I NEVER. WANT. TO. DO. THAT. AGAIN! I have no doubt we did the right thing. Had she survived her stroke, she would have lost the use of her hands and because of sepsis, she would have lost her left leg up to the hip. She wouldn't have wanted to live like that. But I miss her so much and it's been so hard trying to go on, but I'm fighting! She wouldn't want me moping around.
What I also love from this movie's story is, they were shooting the movie, it was hot where they were shooting I think in Georgia, it had been a long day and everyone was kind of grumbling about it, and I believe it was Julia Roberts who said she saw Dolly sitting on a swing and just swinging away seemingly happy as could be, and she went over to her and said, why are you not grouchy like all the rest of us, and Dolly told her, I dreamed all my life about being a star and singing and acting in movies, and my dream has come true, so why would I be b-ing when my dream came true. That is Dolly Parton in a nutshell, she is thankful for the blessings given which we should all remember to be.
@@jenniferdelcambre7942 I went to college for a semester at Northwestern State LA which is where they filmed the locker room scene. My brother helped with that scene bc he was an equipment manager there.
If you loved Olympia Dukakis as Clairee, you've really got to see her Oscar winning performance as Rose in Moonstruck. The cast also includes Cher, who also won an Oscar, in one of her most amazing roles. It also won best screenplay and was nominated for best picture, best supporting actor and best director. But be prepared, it will make you want to eat. There's food or drink in a lot of scenes.
@@Steph-ih8jz yes that is true. The nurse who turned off the machine and the one who gave the clipboard to Jackson to sign - I believe those were the real nurses.
The real Jackson got remarried just months after the real Shelby died. Shelby's brother got inspired to write a play for her son after he heard Shelbys son call Jackson's new wife, Mom. He got pissed and wanted to write something to show who Shelby really was and how much she loved him. It turned into a play.
This movie is so multilayered that I always pick up something different every time I watch it. On my 3rd or 4th time, I realized that Spud was actually in a major depression because of employment issues. I kinda wish y’all had included the scene where Spud offers to go to Shelby’s funeral with Truvy, because I took that to be his being shocked out of his depression and realizing you have to live life and love your loved ones because you only get one chance. Dolly’s reacting in the scene was priceless. Truvy was getting her husband back. Even though it is close to the end of the movie, Spud’s demeanor is more positive after this. Loved your reaction to this movie.
Yes! Hardly anyone catches that. He comes off as neglectful and closed off because we're only seeing Truvy's perspective. When you look closer you can see that he is deep, deep in it, and it's even sadder because Truvy has no idea what to do and probably thinks it's her fault.
More great movies starring these ladies: Splash (Daryl Hannah), Places in the Heart (Sally Fields), Moonstruck (Olympia Dukakis), Notting Hill (Julia Roberts), 9 to 5 (Dolly Parton), Terms of Endearment (Shirley MacLaine),
Both of my sisters are type 1 diabetic and when their blood sugar dropped they can become violent and disoriented easily, even when you are trying to help them they don't understand and it can hit incredibly fast too. I've never seen my sisters shake that much but they say her case is special. Both my sisters have had perfectly healthy children but they were all high risk pregnancies and thankfully no further complications happened but of course we have better treatment options now than before.
One of my favorite movies. My mom's symptoms started half way through her pregnancy with me. She received her terminal glioblastoma diagnosis shortly after my birth and chose to spend whatever time she had left at home with me & my brother who was 1.5 years old. I got a total of 18 months with her before she passed away at home with us. I carry her with me always but this movie along with Stepmom(also starring Julia Roberts) & Terms of Endearment (also starring Shirley MacClain) are the 3 movies that I watch when my grief gets overwhelming. I'm a crier anyway but when I NEED a good cleansing ugly grief cry, I watch those movies. Somehow I always feel closer to my mom & better - like she's curled up in bed with me watching along too. If you haven't seen those other 2 movies I definitely recommend them!
This whole cast is amazing. Each one has has a career of fantastic performances that you should check out. Olympia Dukakis (who played Clairee) is a phenomenal actress! If you all love her in this you’ve gotta watch Moonstruck! She plays Cher’s mom in the movie. I know how Jay feels about Cher! 😂 It also stars Danny Aiello and young Nicholas Cage. Its quirky and fabulous!
Moonstruck is an AMAZING movie, directed by Norman Jewison. "Ya, and some day you'll be dead and I'll wear a red dress to your funeral??" The old dad in the kitchen at the end, crying and saying "I'm so confused...?!" Such an amazing movie.
I read that the nurse that cared for Shelby and helped with her as she was in a coma was the original nurse who cared for the author’s sister…who is what this movie is based on. Doctor too. The author was the preacher who married Shelby in this film.
I live Natchitoches Louisiana where this movie was shot in the summer of 1988 in the sweltering Louisiana heat!!😆 All the houses are within a couple of blocks to my neighborhood and there are still signs around town about this movie all these years later😁 This small town had never been taken over by movie stars and cameras and production crews before...so much fun!!🎥 This a true story that was written by one of our local residents that was born and raised here, Robert Harling. It was about his sister that died from diebetes when she-was a young woman. After the movie, it was turned into a play. Natchitoches will forever be remembered for this movie because this is a tourist town and a college town(NSU), and many tourist come here to see the locations where this movie was filmed😁😁 We have many Bed and Breakfast homes here, and one of them is The Steel Magnolia House, which was Shelbys family's home😊💜
"You know I love you more than my luggage." A quote I still say to my best friends. I adore Clarie and Ouiser. This is One of my absolute favorite movies of all time. The others being The Color Purple, and Fried Green Tomatoes. All three give the most wonderful emotional ups and downs of a life story well written. They are all such beautiful stories.
I was so happy to see you react to this. It's such an emotional movie. My dad, a real tough guy, got really upset when Shelby had her diabetic seizure, and he remained upset the rest of the film. When Jay was so relieved that the surgery went well, I just thought, "Oh, wow, he's REALLY not going to like what comes next." Type 1 diabetes, which Shelby had, can be extremely dangerous. She knew that having a baby would put an enormous strain on her body, but as she told her mother, she would rather have a few minutes of wonderful, than a lifetime of nothing special.
Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser) and Tom Skerritt (Drum) also played husband and wife in The Turning Point more than 10 years before this. I feel like you can see their history and familiarity come through.
I absolutely love this movie and was so excited when I saw it on your poll. My favorite characters were Olympia Dukakis (Clairee) and Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser). This movie has so many Oscar winners… Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia, Dukakis, and Julia Roberts. I would love for you to look up each one of these women, and see their Oscar winning movies. For Sally Field it’s either places in the heart, or Norma Rae. The latter being my favorite. Shirley MacLaine is a famous actress, singer, dancer. She won her Oscars was one for Terms of Endearment. That is a another tearjerker but an excellent movie. Olivia Dukakis won an Oscar for Moonstruck, that also starred Cher in her Oscar winning role. My favorite Julia Roberts movie has to be Pretty Woman. However, she won her Oscar for Erin Brockovich. You can’t go wrong checking out these movies! Great reaction, as usual!
Excellent idea with the Oscars around the corner this would be the best time to check out Oscar winning performances. Each one of the movies mention 10s across the board. Amazing 👏
Pretty Woman and Erin Brocavich are excellent suggestions. I think that Jay would probably like Erin Brocavich a little more than Pretty Woman, mainly because it’s based on a true story (and he seems to like those types of movies when it comes to dramas).
I was born and raised in Louisiana and my favorite thing about it was when you would go to a restaurant where they had dancing and all the people would get up and dance to the Cajun music. Most of the time it was old women dancing with other old women which I always thought with hilarious.
Annelle's transitions through the movie along with each scene being set around a holiday was used to mark to passage of time without a lot of exposition. I believe it is a carry over from the stage production where the sets are more simplified.
This was a super stacked cast of amazing actresses. As a southern woman myself I really love to see strong smart southern women in movies. I think this was probably one of the best performances of Shirley McClaine’s I’ve ever seen. Sally Field was just devastating. I don’t think there’s a bad performance here. I’m so glad y’all reacted to this!
@kellifranklin9872 Have you seen her in the movie Bernie (with Jack Black)? It is another "regional" situation movie (East Texas) and another great performance for her.
This is actually based on a true story, the man who wrote the play also wrote the screenplay. Its based on his sister who died due to complications from diabetes. I remember reading somewhere he said he wrote it for his sister's son so that he would not forget his mother and would always have something to remember her by.
The insulin reaction at the start of the movie is fairly accurate. I have been a type 1 diabetic since 19. I'm 63 now. Back then the insulin used was pig insulin and that stuff could put you on another planet. The DNA recombinant they use now is a lot easier to deal with. They can still be scary sometimes.
Sally Field, of course, rocked the graveside scene! She's been acting since she was very young. In "Sybil" she plays a young woman with dissociative disorder. And killed it! You've seen her playing the mom in "Forrest Gump"
You know a movie is good and worth watching when it evokes emotions from laughing to crying and everything in between. So this in theaters when it opened and it's more meaningful today than ever. Watching your reactions to events in life that we all experience shows what caring, empathic individuals you are.
This is a beautiful movie. The cast, the acting, the story, everything is just so masterfully done. Glad you guys watched it and even more glad you enjoyed it.
@@allenwhitmer8192 MANY MANY amazing movies that he's been in!! I had forgotten he was in M*A*S*H, but then again, I was real young when it was on TV (born in 1973), but do remember watching it.
@@FLmickey90 Yes, I was very young then, too, born in '64, but like you, I remember seeing it. My dad loved it and back then they showed movies on network TV quite often. I always preferred the television MASH, until I got older and understood the innuendo's from the movie
Great choice. Sally Field had the main role in this film and, I believe, had the best performance in this film. She was also in "Forrest Gump" in which she played Forrest's mother. I do love Dolly in this film though. I also love Olympia Dukakis and especially Shirley MacLaine (these two had some of the best and funniest scenes). Darryl Hannah is also good, but she is the weakest link of the ladies. I highly recommend (Please) that you guys watch "Nine To Five" which is Dolly's first film and "Pretty Woman" with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in her star making performance. Both fil.s are highly enjoyable.
9 to 5, would be a great reaction! It has such a stacked cast, and such a fun & unique story. It's also has a fantastic peek, at what life was like in the work force, back in 1980. Pretty Woman, was a big movie back in the day, when it came out. I'm gonna be honest, I tried watching it recently, and there's only a few memorable scenes...the rest of the movie is largely forgettable, or slow. I kept waiting for it to pick up, or get interesting. Maybe it just hits different, 30+ years later? Idk. Instead of Pretty Woman, I would suggest, The Runaway Bride, if you're looking for a fun, fast, and touching, Julia Roberts - Richard Gere, movie. Much better performance from Gere, and far more enjoyable. Again, in my humble opinion. (sounds like a good opportunity for a movie poll)😉
Sally Field has always been known for her ability to be heartwrenching and cry. She is amazing. It is based on a true story of the writer losing his sister and he wrote it in 10 days. All the medical professionals in the movie were real doctors and nurses as a tribute the the roles they played in people's lives at their sometimes darkest times. Another great movie that will make you laugh and cry is P.S. I Love You. It is an absolutely amazing movie also with a big cast.
This reaction made me so incredibly happy. Growing up in Louisiana, this movie will always have a special place in my heart. I was in high school when it came out and my best friend and I sat in that theater, sobbing our faces off. I knew Amber was going to lose it and I figured Jay would have a tough time keeping it together. Such a beautiful and poignant story about life.
I was so excited when this popped up! Such a great classic and a stacked cast. Not sure if you guys recognized Forrest Gump’s mother in Sally Field. It’s so crazy that younger people wouldn’t recognize Julia Roberts because she was THE movie star of the late 80s and through the 90s. Great video, as always.
You guys have seen the great Sally Field (who plays Shelby’s mom and delivers the heart wrenching funeral performance) in Forrest Gump, she was his mom. You should check out her Oscar winning performance in “Norma Rae”. You should also check out Shirley MacLaine’s Oscar winning performance in “Terms of Endearment” and Olympia Dukakis’s Oscar winning performance in “Moonstruck” which also stars Cher in her Oscar winning performance. Lots of Oscar winning performances lol
*Fried Green Tomatoes* - please I'm begging you, one of my favorite movies of all time. It was so good it stayed in the local theaters in Los Angeles for 2 years
The whole cast was outstanding in this film. Not one weak link. Everyone was really suited to their role. I recall seeing it when it came out many years ago. The one liners are hilarious.
I love Shirley MacLaine and Tom Skerritt's comedic chemistry and timing, lol. They both were in another movie where they play a married couple with kids. The movie's called, The Turning Point. It also stars Anne Bancroft and ballet dancers, Myckhael Baryshnikov and Leslie Browne
@@philstubblefield You made me LOL, with the “I hate to reply to myself,” because I reply to my comments all of the time. 😂😂 Thank you for the laugh! Also, I completely agree with you- if you didn’t go through the entire range of human emotions by the end of this film, I am judging you… and thinking you are probably a psychopath, or maybe a robot. Either way, I won’t trust you, lmao.
Shirley MacLaine movie acting career stated in the late fifties. Two of her earlier films are Some Come Running where she costars with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in a melodrama, and of course the masterpiece The Apartment(1960).The Apartment is a dark, cynical romantic comedy directed and written by Billy Wilder.
@@teacherjoe7019 I saw one recently Places in the Heart and LOVED it! They didn't look like they realized they saw Sally Field before as Forrest Gump's mother;)
A couple of other great movies from that period that I really enjoy is "Fried Green Tomatoes". Which was written by Fanny Flagg. She was most known for her Match Game appearances. Also "Driving Miss Daisy". This was a Morgan Freeman classic.
Such a great movie. For something with similar performances and also starring Shirley McLain I’d recommend “Terms of Endearment”. Another great performance driven movie from the 80’s.
As a living donor(donated to my mom in 2018), this movie hits home. My mom and I are doing ok but I can't run as fast as I could before the surgery and have to watch my salt intake. I love this movie and look at how Shelby wanted a baby so bad that it did not matter if her body could take it or not. I had a conversation with my dad about this cause he did not want me to donate, knowing I have two daughters that could possibly need a kidney one day. I did it anyways cause it is my mom. Thank you two so much for reacting to this movie. It was a great cast and you two bring joy into my life with every reaction video. Thanks again for being you! Much love from Texas!!!
The actor who played Shelby’s dad is Tom Skerritt. He played Maverick’s (Tom Cruise) commanding officer in Top Gun and he is also in Top Gun: Maverick. If you get to Kill Bill 1 & 2 you will probably not recognize Daryl Hannah (Annelle) but she is fantastic in that film. She also stars in the movie “Roxanne” with Steve Martin that is such a funny movie.
Love this movie! Sally Field is an amazing actress. She played a role in the movie Sybil, where she had multiple personalities and she killed it. Also in the movie "Not Without My Daughter", Sally Field proved her stellar acting ability. In her younger days, she was also in a sitcom, "The Flying Nun".
"Not without my daughter" I just watched again. Love that movie and nearly everything Sally Fields does. It's funny because the actress's of today say there was no roles for them. As we see in this yes there was, They just didn't worry about where they where in the pecking order.
This was when Julia Roberts was discovered and nominated. She was young and such an amazing actor. Almost all of the women in this movie were academy award winners. Such an amazing movie.
Steel Magnolias is one of my favorite movies. The cemetery scene gets me every time. Just turns into a sobbing mess. Glad y'all were able to review this one. If you haven't already, give Fried Green Tomatoes a review. Another feel good movie.
It’s a profoundly emotional film. That bit at the cemetery always gets me. It’s the only film where I go from crying to immediate laughter at the “ here, hit this! “ - Love your channel. You’re both so so lovely. Your chemistry is wonderful.
The most PERFECT cast ensemble. It's rare to see so many major stars in one film. Dylan, Olympia, Shirley, Sally, Julia, Daryl, Tom, & Sam made a masterpiece.
This is one of my favorite films and I can quote the whole movie. Also this film deals with kidney failure and I am a kidney and liver transplant recipient
If you liked this wonderful movie then you'll love "Terms of Endearment", which also has Shirley MacLaine (Ouiser/Weezer) along with Jack Nicholson and Debra Winger. It's heartfelt, funny and has stellar performances from all the cast. ❣
This is so good. Heart wrenching, but so relatable. We read the stage play in high school English class. The stage version takes places entirely in the salon, so no male characters.
My sister's best friend growing up was severely diabetic. We had glucose tubes all over the house and in the cars, we had a list in the pantry of steps to take if there was an emergency, how to administer her insulin, a daily schedule of when she needed to check her insulin (including a time in the middle of the night to wake her up and give her juice), her symptoms for when her blood sugar was too high and too low, etc. Being a little girl who wanted to be "normal", she would INTENTIONALLY mess with her blood sugar so she could eat sweets. The first time we saw her have a grand mal seizure, was at my 12th birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese. She'd been lying to us about her blood sugar levels so she could have birthday cake. We were upstairs at a large table, and I remember my sister screaming and seeing Janel (the best friend) on the floor at the bottom of the stairs, her entire body banging on the hard floor. Apparently, she went with my sister to the pop fountain and when she paid for her drink, the cashier tried giving her her change, and she just stood there, staring into space before the cup started shaking all the way over her head. She flew backwards, the cup spilled all over the ground and down she went. My parents ran to the drink fountain and started pouring pop into her mouth with their hands. The massive group gathered around her had one stupid person yell, "if she's diabetic, why are you giving her SUGAR?!" at my mom. My mom is a really nice lady, but she yelled, "her blood sugar is LOW, DUMBASS!". They emptied sugar packets under her tongue. I'll never forget that just before the EMTs showed up, her head rolled to the side facing me, her eyes open, face drained of all color and her lips blue like actual lipstick. I thought she was dead. We followed the ambulance to the hospital and there she was, sitting up in bed, eating applesauce, eating graham crackers and just happy as could be, like nothing happened. Her mom showed up, and that's how I spent the rest of my birthday party: in the hospital. My parents were so upset that my dad said he never wanted her to come to our house again. But, he eventually relented. There was only one other serious seizure that she came out of fairly quickly. I was in my bedroom and heard a groan followed by a large thump, then a series of smaller thumps. My sister ran downstairs for my parents while I stayed with her, holding her head so she wouldn't hurt herself too badly. They administered the glucose tube and she came out of it. She was also never supposed to have children. She didn't listen, though. Grew up and had kids. She never listened to medical advice. So much so that she even went through a meth phase, with her own mother becoming addicted and using with her! It was so frustrating. She didn't take care of her feet, which is CRUCIAL for people with diabetes. She walked barefoot outside, almost out of defiance against her own medical condition. One cut on her toe landed her in the friggin hospital. It was scary. Diabetes, particularly Type 1 (which she had) is no joke. Even if you are extremely careful, you can lose your eyesight, your limbs, slip into a coma and die. I hope she's taking care of herself.
This movie is the most amazing emotional rollercoaster masterpiece I have ever seen even to this day I love how brilliant the writing is to even use the dig at Wheezer in the end to not only stop the characters from crying and M’Lynn to not go off the deep end, but also for us the viewers because they knew we’d all be balling about poor Shelby Whenever I want to watch an excellent wholesome movie or even when I need a good cry, I pop this in and cuddle up watching these amazing ladies So glad you guys enjoyed it 🥹
As you noted, this began as a play. There, all of the scenes took place in Truvy's (Dolly Paarton) beauty shop. Julia Roberts was nominated for an Oscar. While didn't win that, she did win a Golden Globe award.
Don’t y’all just love this movie? It takes you for a ride. I saw this with all the girls in my beauty salon when it came out. We were all laughing, crying and relating to it all. Thanks for the chance to reminisce.
Great reaction as usual . This truly is an all star cast of mostly Oscar winners. Here’s some o their other greats: Sally Field- Norma Rae, Places of the Heart; Julia Roberts - Pretty Women , Erin Brockovich; Shirley MacLaine(Weezer) The Apartment and Terms of Endearment; Dolly PARTON - 9 to 5 ; Olympia Dukakis- MoonStruck and Darryl Hannah - Splash
Besides Splash, when I think of Daryl Hannah movies I think of Clan of the Cave Bear, Memoirs of an Invisible Man with Chevy Chase, and unfortunately one that she didn’t do, Footloose (that was Lori Singer). But I forgot she was in one of the absolute best sci-fi movies ever made, Blade Runner, with Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, and Brion James. Daryl is a sorely underrated actress. I don’t know if I’d’ve recognized her in Steel Magnolias if here names wasn’t in the opening credits.
I absolutely love this movie! Sally Field broke my heart in two as a mama of 4 children myself. Her performance was so real and heartfelt, you could feel her pain. The entire cast was wonderful and thank goodness, it's also a hilarious movie since it's so very sad and poignant. Loved your reaction to one of my favorites. ❤️

'Steel Magnolias' was based on a true story. Actor and writer Robert Harling wrote the play based on the true story of his sister, Susan Harling Robinson, who died from diabetic complications. This is one of the only movies that can make me laugh and cry at the same time.

I heard they let her improv that scene because she is so talented.

I don't think you'd want to do it many times. So I'd get as much background info and then rehearse every second at home.
Sally Field never disappoints! She is a two time Academy award winner for Norma Rae and Places In The Heart.
One of the main points was portraying the strength of the women. The author, "Shelby's" brother, wanted to tell about all the strong women in his life, and how they handled the death of his sister. This is how the movie got the name "Steel Magnolias." It's about being feminine and being strong.

Filmed in Natchitoches, La. Very small college town in north Louisiana.
She was a treasure.
I've suggested Moonstruck several times too...
Moonstruck is the best.
Yes. Do Moonstruck.
Moonstruck is the absolute best romantic movie
The movie did come after the play, but the play was written by "Shelby's" younger brother. This was based on a true story.
Omgosh for real?!! I never knew that 😢😩🥹
I believe I also read somewhere that some of the medical team who took care of the writers sister was also in some of the hospital scenes.
It turned into a play.
th-cam.com/video/qtGTmLQv8ww/w-d-xo.html this is the link from the author of the play and movie. Based on his sister and mother.
One of my favorite.parts of the movie
Dolly is from Sevierville in Tennessee. The way she decorates Dollywood down there for Christmas is amazing. As well as Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge!
More great movies starring these ladies: Splash (Daryl Hannah), Places in the Heart (Sally Fields), Moonstruck (Olympia Dukakis), Notting Hill (Julia Roberts), 9 to 5 (Dolly Parton), Terms of Endearment (Shirley MacLaine),
Nottinghill would be a good movie to check out Julia Roberts as well as Pretty Woman
I've been dying for someone to react to Splash and both 9 to 5 and Moonstruck are amazing ensembles as well! great picks!
Nah, *_The APARTMENT_* (Shirley MacLaine, Jack Lemmon)
I vote 9 to 5!
@@rollomaughfling380 and Postcards from the Edge (the real life story of Princess Leia - Carrie Fisher and her mom)
Tom Skerritt who played Sally Field's husband in the movie, also played Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf in the first Top Gun movie
I'm always curious if ppl are going to recognize Tom Skerritt. He's such a phenomenal actor.
And Captain Dallas in the first Alien movie.
Tom has been in tons of stuff. I saw him the other day in an old episode of "The Virginian" in the 60's.
This movie hits home for me, my sister died from a heart-attack due to diabetes complications. Thank you for reacting to this movie. ✌️❤
I am so sorry about your loss 🙏🏻 condolences to you and your family
@Elizabitty213 thank you so much
Condolences to you and your family. I still feel the loss of my sister in 2021. I understand what you may be feeling.
@Debra Meyer thank you and I am sorry for your loss
So very sorry you lost your sister❤️
I've watched this movie so many times and still cry every time. Amazing acting by the whole cast. For another Dolly movie recommendation: "9 to 5"!
9 to 5 is one of my favorite movies ever -- I saw it 8 times in the theater when it first came out (I was 10).
I second the recommendation for, 9 to 5.
I was just thinking the same- watch Moonstruck next with the great Olympia Dukakis and Cher in her Oscar-winning role.
I agree, "Moonstruck" is oh, so funny. "Snap out of it!" Excellent, hilarious movie!
YES!
I love it when Olympia calls hickies "love bites" in Moonstruck. Lol
This was a great reaction!! Glad y’all liked it! Next up, Fried Green Tomatoes!!!
Oh yes!!!! SUCH a great movie!!!
totally agree on Fried Green Tomatoes. Benny and June and great also
Yes! and "Beaches"
And Terms of Endearment
Yes, please! Fried Green Tomatoes.
This screenplay was written by the brother of the girl that died. He really put his heart and soul in to it.
Some of the hospital staff were not actors but the actual staff that took care of Shelby.
I was so happy to see you react to this. It's such an emotional movie. My dad, a real tough guy, got really upset when Shelby had her diabetic seizure, and he remained upset the rest of the film. When Jay was so relieved that the surgery went well, I just thought, "Oh, wow, he's REALLY not going to like what comes next."
Type 1 diabetes, which Shelby had, can be extremely dangerous.
The two of you just seem like the nicest people ever. I wish I knew you personally.
Fried Green Tomatoes should be on your short list of movies. It has this type of vibe and I think you will love it
I absolutely love this movie and was so excited when I saw it on your poll.
Terms of Endearment would be another great one for them to react to. Incredible performances throughout.
Excellent idea with the Oscars around the corner this would be the best time to check out Oscar winning performances. Each one of the movies mention 10s across the board. Amazing 👏
They've watched Forrest Gump...Sally Field played his mother.
Pretty Woman and Erin Brocavich are excellent suggestions. I think that Jay would probably like Erin Brocavich a little more than Pretty Woman, mainly because it’s based on a true story (and he seems to like those types of movies when it comes to dramas).
@@morningcoffeebreak7367 I forgot to mention that.
Dolly Parton has been an icon in my eyes for years! She is beautiful humble and extremely bright!
The play takes place in Truvy’s beauty shop. There are no men in the stage play.
I think the word to describe Ouiser, despite all her apparent meanness and unpleasantness is endearing. She was an endearing character in this movie.
I lost my mother when I was 14 and this was one of her favorite movies. I couldn't watch it for years after she died. This is a good movie.
This is actually based on a true story, the man who wrote the play also wrote the screenplay. Its based on his sister who died due to complications from diabetes. I remember reading somewhere he said he wrote it for his sister's son so that he would not forget his mother and would always have something to remember her by.
This move is filmed in Natchitoches Louisiana and you can take tours around the town. It's a beautiful town.
A lot of people remember the tears and the drama, but I think most people forget how freaking
hilarious this film is!
Sally Field, of course, rocked the graveside scene! She's been acting since she was very young. In "Sybil" she plays a young woman with dissociative disorder. And killed it! You've seen her playing the mom in "Forrest Gump"
Sybil was so good
@@melhawl3685 i think so too! But, I gotta admit, I LOVE her in Gidget
You know a movie is good and worth watching when it evokes emotions from laughing to crying and everything in between. So this in theaters when it opened and it's more meaningful today than ever. Watching your reactions to events in life that we all experience shows what caring, empathic individuals you are.
This movie still makes me bawl to this day 😭. It's definitely a classic, one of my faves.
This is a beautiful movie. The cast, the acting, the story, everything is just so masterfully done. Glad you guys watched it and even more glad you enjoyed it.
I was wondering if they recognized Tom Skeritt, the dad, from Top Gun. He played the head instructor, Cmdr. Metcalf, or, call sign Viper

This movie was one of the most brilliant ensemble casts ever. I've watched it so many times and laugh and cry every time.
Oh yes! Please watch '9 to 5' another great movie 😊
She’s my mom’s all-time favorite actress. She can REALLY pack that emotional punch in her performances. Brilliant.
38:12 "Laughing through tears is my favourite emotion" Amen to that...
This movie tears me up as a father of two girls. I love this movie. Glad y’all watched it.
This movie has one of my favorite lines. I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood the last forty years.
"They had contacts in the 80's?"
Omg I'm so old 😂
If you can watch this without crying, you have no soul. Amazing job by every actor/actress❤

The play was written by Robert Harling about his sister (the Shelby character). He also played the minister in both the wedding and funeral scenes.
It just gets better everytime you rewatch it. A classic

I just want to say this. I think that you two are the most beautiful couple ever!! I enjoy all of your videos. Keep them coming!
I like Tom.....I watched Picket Fences all the time....thought he did a great job
And don't forget Gidget!
"Not without my daughter" I just watched again. Love that movie and nearly everything Sally Fields does. It's funny because the actress's of today say there was no roles for them. As we see in this yes there was, They just didn't worry about where they where in the pecking order.

This movie is the most amazing emotional rollercoaster masterpiece I have ever seen even to this day
I love how brilliant the writing is to even use the dig at Wheezer in the end to not only stop the characters from crying and M’Lynn to not go off the deep end, but also for us the viewers because they knew we’d all be balling about poor Shelby

I think this might be the first time I’ve seen Jay tear up. ❤
May Clairee rest in peace. 🕊️
