Resizing and Repairing Grandma’s Coat

- This project has been on my "want to do" list for so long now, I finally got around to doing it! And what better weather to wear a warm winter coat in, than gloriously cold below freezing winter temperatures?
Despite being a simple project, this did take longer than expected to finish. Largely due to doing my best to respect and adhere to the original craftsmanship. I cannot claim their excellence, but I can at least appreciate and acknowledge it.
The wool yarn I am using is Hillesvåg Sølje, a lovely, soft yarn from the Norwegian longwool (Norsk pelssau), a sheep with wool in natural shades of grey, which gives all the colors beautiful mottled tones. ull.no/produkt... PS: There are obviously limits to how much extra width you can add to a single side seam in this way. In total I added less than 10 cm (4 inches), which is already pushing the proportions. If I had to add a lot more, it would have made more sense (but also a lot more work) to add a few cm to each seam.

This is exactly what people did centuries ago: remaking and reparing old clothes to look and fit better. It's amazing to think about that while watching your video, it somehow makes our ancestors more alive in my head. They could have made a youtube video just like yours - if they had the technology. That makes them feel very real.
That is a very nice way of looking at it. I do know my grandmother approves of reusing her coat in this way. 🥰
Wow! The feather stitching on the cuffs was so pretty amd looked like it was meant to be there. I like the concept of making the changes quite obvious, not trying to hide them.
I was suddenly reminded of an overcoat I had as a child. Mine was a hand-me-down from a family my parents knew. {The relationship was complicated and "friends" is probably not the right word, as my mother ended up threatening to take them to court over money they owed my father. Fortunately Jack Thompson coughed up the money when threatened with court proceedings but Mum would have had no qualms about taking them to court if they hadn't paid.) Anyway, before all that went down, they had this overcoat that their daughter had grown out of and I scored it.
Stylistically my overcoat was very similar to yours, I would guess at it being 1950s. According to what I was told, the tailor was "the same tailor the Royal children have" - no idea whether or not that was true and unfortunately, I don't remember the name on the label. The collar had a dark forest green velvet insert. The dark green of the velvet matched one of the colours that the fabric was woven out of, it was a twill in yellow, green and natural. If I remember correctly, the lining was a light beige. Like your coat, it was gored and had a nicely flared skirt.
I was very sorry to grow out of that overcoat, I really liked it.

The coat turned out wonderful! 💚I myself am in the process of mending and transforming clothes I haven't worn due to them being ill fitting or simply unflattering. It is such a nice feeling when they are given new life and get to be used, instead of being forgotten in the dark corners of the closet .

I inherited my mother's not-quite-finished linen chemise that she made for her folk dance outfit, complete with handmade pulled-thread lace. I just finished remaking it to fit me. I wish I had Kristine's skill and patience. The coat is so wonderfully redone.

i wonder if you could add rusty red overall small embroidery on the inserts, it might match the color of the jacket, just an idea....but like this its great as well! love the cuff detail you added

Not really, you get used to working with one hand just like anything else.
Rather than opening the side seams, I'd have just fashioned it into single breasted
