Hello Kurzgesagt! I really admire you and I love the work that you do! I'd like to share something rather personal with you. Something I've been holding onto for about 2 years now and I have to tell you this now. So, please allow me to elaborate so by the time your done reading my comment, you'll know why.. Firstly, I am a deaf man but I haven't always been deaf! You see, I was born with a horrible disease called Ménière's and after me fighting and battling with it for 23 years of my life, it finally took my hearing from me.. I knew eventually I'd lose my hearing before I was 30 years old, due to the aggressive progression of it but during my last year of hearing, I tried so much to listen to as much of the things I loved because the only way I would be able to hear again.. was.. to relive my memories.. My sister has helped me so much through my depression and what she started doing for me - and even still to this very day - she writes down videos for me in my notebook and then I'll try to read and watch the video the best I can because sadly, the TH-cam Captions are worthless. That is how I found you. I especially fell in love with you're work because in that field, making a deaf person hear again is possible and I long so badly to hear again. It saddens me that if I ever meet a woman and have kids, I'll never hear their voices.. It saddens me even more deeply I can't here my mom's voice no more or even my dad's.. I never realized how ungrateful I really was with my life.. How I took things for granted and how I long to change my past because now I know, what it means to be appreciative!! You sadly don't appreciate something until you don't have it no more.. I sadly, learn't the hard way. So, for watching your videos for about 2 years now, it has really helped me so much through my depression.. in ways you probably wouldn't understand.. I'm always so excited when you release a new video because, I love to LEARN! And one last thing before I end this, a few weeks ago, my Doctor diagnosed me with Endocrine Cancer but I am still waiting on the official results.These last few years, I was slowly getting out of my depression but getting that news, really.. really brought me down..i don't want to go blind too!! i don't want to die either.. So, I needed to get this off my chest because who knows, I might be dead in a few months, I don't know. I was never one to express my self but all I have had since I went deaf, was the TH-cam Community and I am just thanking all the ones that has helped me through this that didn't even know they we're even there for me! I know my comment will disappear with all the others and that's OK!! At least I know I took my time to write this for ya! I am an Astrophysics major (although this knowledge isn't from a class), we don't currently know of any stars large enough to create a GRB that are pointed at us and close enough to cause mass extinction level damage. The closest possibility is WR 104, a Wolf Rayet star (basically a star that's so big and powerful that it's blasting off a sizeable fraction of its mass in its solar wind, although there are other traits), which is pointed vaguely towards us and very large, but it's not certain that it will create a GRB (one originating in a high metallicity star would be unusual) and only certain attempts to measure its axis have shown it as anywhere near pointed at us, other methods have found it pointed well to the side and therefore not a threat.
Short duration GRB, which are created by colliding neutron stars, would be harder to identify as those are small enough that us failing to detect them is a real possibility at the ranges close enough to be a threat, but those are even more rare, and release less energy than long duration ones.

I had a dream about this happening but it wasn't exactly the same, it was a cosmic ray that pulsated heat waves of increasing intensity apparently microwaves that turn infrared. I had to stay in a car to not die. It was crazy because I felt the heat. It caused severe raining but ironically this kept it from continuing to grow very hot but I still felt the heat pulses. It was scary.

It would take you a month to die from slower causes like lack of oxygen, tumors and sun exposure.
So, when and IF it happens, quickly get indoors and you'll only get sunburnt a bit.
It's not completely lost, just a percentage of it. You'd still die, but much more slowly

This video is kind of lying. The nearest GRB candidate is WR 104 and that is 8000 light years away. Too far to cause an apocalyptic scenario. I'd be more concerned about asteroids.

@TK How? If the atmosphere gets burnt away from the planet, complex life would be pretty screwed. You would have to build a habitat in space and hide behind the planet to shield from the burst, and then... Well, life would suck for a pretty long time while you lived in space waiting for the planet to recover I guess. In any case, not ideal.

The fact we won't know a GRB is going to hit us until it actually DOES hit us actually puts me at ease. It means that fucking mass hysteria wouldn't be a thing before it hits.
Sorry to disappoint you, but there'd be more mass hysteria than ever observed. The burst hitting us wouldn't kill us, but rather cook the ozone layer. The following few years would cause, well, 101% cancer for every human and anything else remotely alive during daytime, and all of our tech would probably get wrecked. Much worse than panicking about knowing that it's coming and going out of your mind to prepare for it.

It doesn't cook stuff. Mostly... Just completely destroys all of the Earth's protections against radiation. If it's close enough, it would also have leftover radiation hitting the planet after the ozone layer is gone, but I'm pretty sure there are no stars viable to become GRB's close enough to cause that effect.

Not as far as I know. Radiation doesn't melt things after all, and gamma radiation would simply screw our atmosphere up. Now if some gass gets ejected from close enough and hits us... Then it's a whole other story.

Fortunately, AFAIK astronomers haven't found any stars nearby about to make a black hole. Thanks to math, we can judge how close a star is to becoming a black hole (if it can) and if a problematic system is discovered, we will have enough of a head start to put massive funding into a space program and anti-gamma ray materials to make a shield of sorts. It won't be quick, but we will have quite the head start.

It travel with (almost) light speed, so if they found one, you and I (and everyone else) already dead. The biggest danger what we know is Betelgeuse, but we are not sure what will happen with it. And it could died hundreds of years ago (and the Earth killing GRB is on its way), or it will be alive for thousands of years more, and there won't be any GRB, or it won't hit us all.
