Easily my favourite City memory. I was also at the semi final second leg - traveled all the way up from Bedford on a school night - and my mate and I got our photo in the MEN during the pitch invasion (still have a copy). The final was an uncomfortable day. We went into Wembley through the wrong entrance and had to walk through two Gillingham sections to get to our seats; that was a gauntlet, I can tell you. When Gillingham scored their second I just slumped into my seat. Didn't even celebrate Horlock's. Dickov's goal was surreal. We had pretty much the same view as the TV camera angle, so I'm not sure if my memories of it are my own or just the TV footage. I barely remember the game, to be honest, it was so stressful. I was 15 at the time, the noise was deafening, and the atmosphere so tense throughout. I think we all felt that if we didn't get out of that division then the club might be stuck there for a long time. Huge relief to win that game.

Funny things never change. City still put their fans through the same agony in winning. It must be in their DNA. However that season showed why Man City are one of England's biggest clubs. Third tier football, Maine Road packed every second week even during more bad results. The fans at that final. Real fans. Few clubs have had to suffer like City, changing managers by the week. Then they deservingly get successful and all the hate comes out from the Scousers mainly. Honestly think a lot of Utd Mancunians have taken it better and they like Ferrari fans focus on their own problems. Bin Dippers sense of divine right is ignorant and laughable.

i was there that day - been in a pub since 10am (sneaked in the back door) and was full of Guiness at the match.. how depressed we were 2-0 down right at the death... I was for leaving but my mate wouldn't so i stood on the stairs at the stop of the stand just waiting for the inevitable. When Horlock scored i went and celebrated with my mates and when Dickov scored we lost our minds!! the post match celebrations in the ppubs nearby were bonkers too..... some random women on a hen do in a coach flashing at us! one guy just stood there in the street outside a pub arms spread shouting into the street - nowt on but his trainers showing his tattoos (one was big welsh dragon) - people re-enacting the goals in the pub etc etc
    Cruel games these play-off finals.

Listened to it with my dad on the radio. It was the first time I saw him cry. My first City shirt was from this season, the god awful 'laser blue' that dad didn't want to buy me because it was the wrong shade of blue. Still get called a fake fan because I didn't grow up in Manchester, everyone assumes I must have just started supporting them since they got rich. It's a pleasure to see the club play the kind of football they do now but I remember watching Terry Cooke and Shaun Goater score in a 1-3 win at Reading in 1999, the first time I actually went to a match. I remember thinking we'd never get back to the Premier League again when they sold Kinkladze to Ajax after getting relegated again in 98. If I ever tell people I remember supporting City during the 90s I get told 'they all say that'! Can't win!
So ignore them I say. I do still resent the people who try to insist every fan at a City game these days must just be a middle eastern tourist. City got bought by Mansour because they had one of the most incredible supporter bases in the country, and those fans are still here and don't deserve to be written off as fakes.
