As a farrier myself, I've done multiple cases like this. Most of them don't fight. Pretty amazing really. But I'm sure they're already too uncomfortable to want to fight

That pony was likely sore for a while after the trim. But I'm sure he was already sore from the long feet. At least after the trim, his tendons and ligaments could relax.... no longer being strained. Good job
Horses are very tough animals when it comes to pain. If you ever seen an animal chiropractor do a video on a horse it's not immediately obvious that something is wrong, but once they make that adjustment and they shake it out they appear to be much happier afterward.

The pony foundered at some point -- very common with ponies -- and the bruising in the feet is from an old bleed. As long as the bruise is limited to the "old" tissue the farrier trims off, there's no pain for the pony.
I used to love watching my uncle do this, and fitting shoes. All the local kids with horses came up to his house and he'd do it for free. He wasn't a farrier, but all the old blokes knew how to take care of there horses as there were weren't many cars back in the day. RIP uncle Nev.

Been watching some shoeing videos lately and I'm constantly saddened by how many animals are neglected to such a state. It's horrible!! The tolerance of the horses is also amazing. I don't think I could sit that still for a pedicure if my toe nails were in such poor condition! Thank goodness there are still farriers out there doing the good work.

You act like it was intentional... There are quite a few scenarios where this could happen and it would not be intentional... Life happens and sometimes bad stuff happens to good people or creatures

With people finally realized the horses were a bad shape obviously no one was there to take care of them... Should we dig up my grandpa and prosecuted? If you think something like this is black and white 100% of the time it shows you really don't have a clue how the world works.
A lot of animal "abuse" is usually the result of people who aren't mentally well and cannot even take care of themselves; are in a situation where they lack the means or resources for animal upkeep; or sometimes it has been going on for so long and gradually worsened that they don't actually realise how bad it's gotten and how it's now considered abusive it's become the norm to then. It's rarely deliberate or intentional with animals. You ask a lot of these "animal abusers" and they'll swear they love their animals and would give up the world for them! Especially hoarders. Their situation has just gotten out of hand... It's not like child/human abuse where there's usually deliberate sadistic intent.
And i'll never understand how an animal can grow something naturally that if not cared for by a human will kill/incapacitate it. I suppose it is something that only develops after being breed in captivity for thousands of years?
More than a trimming job, that was more like sculpting!! The hoof had lost all shape in resemblance it's former characteristics & the master farrier having no lines to follow, but must rely on his own knowledge the perimeters of the hoof wall & shape. Experience guided him true Glorious restoration & Bravo to these craftsman. The pony commendable as very well behaved, must of sensed rescue was on the way. Salute to Idaho Horseshoeing School.👌👍💖
Got that poor pony shining like a new diamond. In the late 60s and early 70s, I lived down the street from a stable that raised Tennessee Walkers. I would hang out and watch the workers and horses after school. (5th&6th grades) I remember the farrier coming out 1 time. The horses were so well kept up that short of shoeing, he was in and out in no time. That was abusive to let that poor pony get that far.
FABULOUS JOB... WOW!!! It's very unfortunate that this animal had to suffer, due to the neglect from it's owner! At least, now, the pony has been taken care of!!!

The bad thing was that, due to a drought, the hooves were super dried out so that I couldn't use my knife and clippers. Also did I not have an electric saw, just a handsaw for iron/plastic. We had to make the mule lie down and had to tie her feet so she wouldn't kick, stand up or constantly move. She was so terrified. I felt really bad for her during the process, but it was necessary to do it. The result wasn't as perfect as in this video, but it was such a pleasure to see her walking well again after we finished. What made me really sad is that when I asked why they hadn't done anything way earlier, the owner said that "they hadn't seen it until some days before" 😟 Honestly, how can you NOT see that? We sometimes use Norvegian tar on the too tender sole due to excessive humidity or so on ... It avoids any external material to get in the sole while hardening the surfaces the hooves ... Generally vegetal oils on the external the hoof, and Norwegian tar on the sole ... In the hope it helps . Dare, care, ride safe, clean, have fun ... From France with .

I can only imagine the amount of physical therapy needed after a hoof trim that has been neglected that long, the animal has probably forgotten how to walk correctly!

I have watched a few of these types of video’s, which led me to Bovine hoof trimmers, and they use Grinders to speed up the work. I wonder Why don’t farriers use the same type of tool for the rough work?

i know that the poor thing is in pain, but i'm curious. on such severely neglected hooves, are horses ever given mild sedatives to help them stay calm throughout the process? i know they aren't given enough to knock 'em out, but it seems like this would be incredibly uncomfortable and yet this horse, and others, remain so calm and still throughout the process. just amazing to me...
I read somewhere that the parts of the hoof being worked on (trimmed, peeled back etc.) don’t have any nerve endings. I could be wrong, but I think that has something to do with why the animals remain so calm. Fascinating stuff

It can’t be comfortable, and I would think a bit more painful since now each hoof has to bear a bit more weight since the hoof being worked on clearly has to be picked up. Still skillful that they can do all of this and the horses are calm. I get so much as a hangnail and freak out lol.

Horses in the wild don't end up like this because their hooves naturally wear down from running around and foraging. When they're limited to pens and flat grass fields, their hooves don't wear down fast enough.

Same thing with dog vs wolves. Dogs need to regularly get their nails trimmed what with living sedentary lives inside homes vs wolves or working dogs that have their nails filed down naturally from running and foraging outside
Thankfully, with horse hooves the blood vessels don’t grow down with the overgrown hoof. This means we can cut into a lot of hoof to get to where we want to get to. I would have trimmed more off than we saw. It looks scary and is scary but can be done safely.
Hooves dont function like dog claws where the longer the claw gets the longer the quick. The internal structures in a hoof exist somewhat independently to the external hoof wall. To a point. With long term growth like that you will get inflamation and bruising (the pink you noticed) and quite possibly cartilege damage and bone misalignment which is irreversible butbcan be managed with proper hoof care and orthopedic shoeing if necessary.
I don't see it often. But I've come across a few horses over the years where the blood supply wasn't as high up as it should have been.... like a dog's quick in their nails when left too long and they don't move around much. But that's pretty rare. Most cases you can trim without issue. In 22 years, I may have come across 6 cases. So not many.
@@ladyfarrier5949 I had one horse where the hoof seemed to push up rather then grow out to the sole. A mid sized mustang over 4 inches or 100mm at the toe, touch the sole and blood everywhere. That was one for the books

I had no idea that hoofs grow out of control if not maintained. How often should this be done routinely? Very happy this pony got a much needed pedicure. Thanks for uploading this..
Part of the problem is leaving a horse to walk on soft ground, wild horses naturally chip away their hooves on rough surfaces, but with domestic horses you generally manage the hooves during the shoeing process to prevent over growth like that, which is way more consistent / healthy than anything a wild horse would achieve. That pony was obviously neglected for quite awhile though.
Horses typically will get hoof trims every 5 to 8 weeks, depending on the health and growth pattern of the hoof of the individual horse. The goal is to keep the hooves healthy and trimmed properly so the horse can move in proper balance.
So if the hooves are bleeding does that mean there's an infection, or does the blood need to go back up because the hoof is used to having more room for the blood vessels? Like how a dog's nails can get too long so the quick gets too long as well
Pony is going to be VERY lame after that trim. A nessisary evil, but wouldn't be a satisfying end to video. Should be good as new in a couple or few weeks if there isn't any tendon damage from the neglect. :)
Can anyone explain to me the whole situation here? If a pony's hoofs need to be trimmed manually, then what about those ones in the wild? How do they manage to survive without getting hoofs trimmed?
That's not how it works. The A.S.P.C.A recently attempted to prosecute a woman for having a pony that their veterinary surgeon deemed to have a body score of 0 out of 5 & a bleeding hoof "quarter" crack & the accused defended herself by saying that the neglect caused to the pony was due to her suffering from depression at the time .....& the judge let her off.
I want to see an interview with the pony talking about how much better its life is now.

You never know the situation. In many cases, this even continues even when the animal is waiting for adoption. They just can’t afford farriers.

My daughter had horses and two ponies and we boarded some horses for others. Only the ponies seemed to get hooves this overgrown and distorted.
For real the previous owners the definition of I didn’t know how to do it so I didn’t do it al all

they barely walk, that's why they grew so long. Horses in the wild naturally wear their hooves down from long distance treks.

No, they are not. Sedating horses is unpredictable. Lots of breaks and love.

With long term growth like that you will get inflamation and bruising (the pink you noticed) and quite possibly cartilege damage and bone misalignment which is irreversible butbcan be managed with proper hoof care and orthopedic shoeing if necessary.
I don't see it often. But I've come across a few horses over the years where the blood supply wasn't as high up as it should have been.... like a dog's quick in their nails when left too long and they don't move around much. But that's pretty rare. Most cases you can trim without issue. In 22 years, I may have come across 6 cases. So not many.
@@ladyfarrier5949 I had one horse where the hoof seemed to push up rather then grow out to the sole. A mid sized mustang over 4 inches or 100mm at the toe, touch the sole and blood everywhere. That was one for the books

Oh no!!! Why?!?!?! Oh, why would someone get a pony only to let this happen? It must have been so painful for this poor soul to even stand, let alone walk. Thank you so much for taking care of this pony's hooves. I truly hope this pony will go to someone who will give it the care and love it deserves.

I had no idea that hoofs grow out of control if not maintained. How often should this be done routinely? Very happy this pony got a much needed pedicure. Thanks for uploading this..
Part of the problem is leaving a horse to walk on soft ground, wild horses naturally chip away their hooves on rough surfaces, but with domestic horses you generally manage the hooves during the shoeing process to prevent over growth like that, which is way more consistent / healthy than anything a wild horse would achieve. That pony was obviously neglected for quite awhile though.
Horses typically will get hoof trims every 5 to 8 weeks, depending on the health and growth pattern of the hoof of the individual horse. The goal is to keep the hooves healthy and trimmed properly so the horse can move in proper balance.

A hoof takes approx one year to grow to it's normal length, from top to bottom. So for this horse, quite a while!

So if the hooves are bleeding does that mean there's an infection, or does the blood need to go back up because the hoof is used to having more room for the blood vessels? Like how a dog's nails can get too long so the quick gets too long as well

Pony is going to be VERY lame after that trim. A nessisary evil, but wouldn't be a satisfying end to video. Should be good as new in a couple or few weeks if there isn't any tendon damage from the neglect. :)

Can anyone explain to me the whole situation here? If a pony's hoofs need to be trimmed manually, then what about those ones in the wild? How do they manage to survive without getting hoofs trimmed?

The A.S.P.C.A recently attempted to prosecute a woman for having a pony that their veterinary surgeon deemed to have a body score of 0 out of 5 & a bleeding hoof "quarter" crack
& the accused defended herself by saying that the neglect caused to the pony was due to her suffering from depression at the time .....& the judge let her off.

I’ve been seeing these videos a lot lately, and this question keeps popping up: what did horses do before humans learned how to do this?
It would naturally wear down from travelling long distances everyday. Humans only need to do this due to domestication.
They walked for 10s of km’s each day, instead of being caged in captivity.
