I love the break down of this process. It shows which portion of the sentence is connected to which character(s). It makes it possible to identify character(s) at a quicker rate for in the future.
Hi, I'm your new subscriber. Just want to say that you're method of teaching is really helpful and easy to follow. I'm listening to your videos while working😊. I'm Filipino working here in Taiwan as a caregiver. Thanks so much❤ keep safe always ❤.
I stopped learning Chinese after level 4 because of speaking and listening problem and hence the exam. So when I came across your teaching I am listening and understanding better 🙂. Thank you 谢谢 你。
This is an interesting topic Andy and to be honest I was surprised when I was visiting China for the first time and the waiter brought a jug of boiling water to me! The Greek mothers in the contrary with the Chinese mothers used to saying: don't drink hot water because you will throw up :D To be honest even though in Greece where the temperatures at summer are reaching 35+ C we are drinking ice cold water in the Arabian countries they are always drinking hot tea and they must have reasons for that I suppose. But about China I have a different opinion which could be supplementary to your opinion. First of all in Greece we have traditional medicin for thousands of years like you and even though we have not traditional doctors any more we use many medicinal plants everyday at home. So when we are sick our mothers are offering to us instead of hot water, hot drinks like your tea which we call teas in general. In Greece we have "greek mountain tea", sage, thyme, rosmary and some other plants that belongs to the same family (Labiatae) and have a unique characteristic. They have antibiotic properties and this is scientifically proven as I know as an agronomist. Similar characteristics has the chamomilla which we also drink as tea. We consume a lot of chinese tea too which has the positive characteristics of the hot water and helps hydration, important when we have fever. The chinese tea has not antibiotic properties but it has antioxidants which prolong life as we know. But why the Chinese have the habit of drinking hot water? I think that there is a reason for that comming from ancient times. The biggest problem of our ancestor was not only to have drinking water in their cities and towns but also to have safe to drink water. And here are the different solutions that the Europeans and the Chinese had found. In China they used the simple solution of boiling the drinking water and killing this way microbes and other micro organisms that were dangerous for their health. By boiling tea leaves they were making hot water more tasty and better for health. In the contrary, in Europe, the people found another solution. They were adding small quantities of alcohol! It is well known that in the ancient Greek symposiums (=drinking together) they we consuming big quantities of wine without to became drunk. The reason is that the wine was diluted in water. The alcohol is toxic for the liver, but after so many centuries of consuption the European liver involved to tolarate it. In the contrary, according to studies, 50% of Chinese people have alcohol intolerance! Thank you very much for the informations that gave to us about the Chinese culture. If you like I can send you Greek mountain tea to taste it. It is very aromatic and has nice taste.
This video earned you a new sub. The story was within my hsk level and I felt like I was actually bilingual bcas I understand like 99 percent of it without the translation
This video is incredibly useful and made me learn a lot more vocabulary, thank you so much ! I will come back to this video for sure to watch it again and again ^^
Great video Andy & Sarah! I always assumed boiling water was for hygiene - the ancients, who were so skilled in ancient medicine, certainly would have discovered that boiling water before drinking it was a healthy thing to do considering the conditions of those times. Thanks for breaking the sentences down and for including the sentence structure. Very helpful. I recommend your lessons to everyone learning Mandarin! 😊
My teacher always told me to drink warm water as cold water shocks the internal organs and causes dampness in the body, which is frowned upon in Chinese Traditional Medicine.
Our pre-human ancestors all the way to modern men used to drink cold water. We have adapted to cold drinks as hot drinks are a relatively new phenomenon
I’m Scottish born Chinese and have heard from a young age about the condition ‘dampness’ in the body…..47 years later….I still have no idea what that means 😂
I like warm/room temperature water not hot water. I stopped drinking cold water because it makes me cough easily when I drink more cold drinks. A doctor also told me ice and cold water usually attract bacteria to bred easier. So its better to drink hot, warm or room temperature water.
I have been drinking hot water for years with lemon as I do not like cold water. The nurses I worked with thought it was strange. I did not learn this from the Chinese as it was just a preference.
I drink Luke warm water 8oz. Every day to wash away our toxic in the body, and keeps me mtn. My body weight, since I drink Luke warm water everyday , I wear size dress 14 now I went back to size 8 and pants size 6 and shoe before size 8 but now my size shoes back to 71/2, thanks for drinking Luke warm water. My weight is before 174 lbs. before but now 158 lbs.
Thank you Takis Leontidis for your additional information. I like this channel and it’s content. I’ll try to drink hot water everyday but I won’t do away with cold water especially during summer when the temperature is so hot. Thanks for this video.

I’ll drink hot water since I’m in my teenage year for health benefit . Warm or hot water cleanse your colon your intestine facilitate digestive no cholesterol healthy gut etc….just imagine if your hand it’s oily and if you wash with cold water the oil on your hand still hanging there but if your removed with warm water it’s cleanse and washed away quickly the oily sensation ….
Thank you very much for breaking down the sentences. I'm learning Mandarin and my biggest weakness is knowing when and where to add duo (before/after a word) and le (after the verb/end of sentence). I cant say I had improved but I can say for surety I can get a general idea after watching your video.
I wonder what temperature hot water is. Isn't it rather lukewarm, about body temperature? Ayurveda and TCM recommend drinking one to two glasses of lukewarm drinking water in the morning on an empty stomach as a home remedy for treating digestive problems. This is just an example, warm water is also said to detoxify ...
Before I can not get down my weight, I went to a diet Dr.I stop because too expensive of the pills, now , I don’t diet just drink that Luke warm water 8oz, a day ad eat any fruits in the morning, eat any vegetables during lunch and 4oz of proteins like beef, pork and sea food , but I don’t eat potatoes, and I don’t like potato but I like rice, I wash the rice five times to get rid the starchy.
In my honest opinion as a Scottish born chinese who only knows Cantonese…mandarin seems easier to learn/teach than mandarin. My daughter who is 11 self teaches using a combo of TH-cam videos, Google translate and Chinese strike order app on iOS. She manage fine and is able to pick up the tones

I had a chinese ex-gf that always wanted hot water, especially during her period. It was always about qi and feng sui with her. As for me, I believe that a few ml of hot water has very little effect in changing the temp to the already existing ~100 ml of fluid that's already in the stomach. If anything, there was an international agency group that studied the link of hot water to increased risk in esophageal cancer. Sipping hot water also keeps the water from necessary daily fluid intake your body needs to stay healthy and manage daily cellular functions. The hot water does help in warming your hands and gives an overall warm feeling and good mental feeling, due to the increase of vascular expansion and flow. Long story short, my ex believes in the "energy" that flows through her with the warm energy, and even though it does give you a temporary sense of warm feeling, I believe in maintaining your necessary fluid in intake is more important, where anything else is more of a placebo effect 🤷🏽♂
