Let me just say I have been looking forward along with many ZD30 owners to this trip to see how Gary's Patrol goes in the Cape York. It has been one of my favourite series to watch but I suppose I'm a little disappointed that the GU broke down. I know doing a TD swap will be great for more content but I think it would be great to give the ZD30 another go with some more modifications. Pre fuel filter, sealed intercooler, boost control, EGT & Boost guages at a minimum. There will be a whole ZD30 community out there that would be keen to see you give her another chance. Epic Cape series! By far better than so many others, you showed so much more of it than just gunshot that’s been shown a million times. Awesome music this series too 🤙🏻🤙🏻
I'll give you a really hot tip actually two hot tips. With the GU patrols when they start playing up with fuel especially doing some really steep Rocky climbing and heavy twisting even a heavy load in the rear end on the back right hand side you will crush the fuel line. You can put 50ml blocks for a body lift but where the spring sits in the top you will have to strengthen that so it doesn't flex up or bend as it will cause your fuel line to pinch. Second tip. The fuel tanks have a bad habit of not earthing out properly and this will show up on your dashboard. So just simply put an extra electrical wire from the tank direct to the chassis for good contact. And don't forget keep an eye on your fuel filter if it's full of crap it will cause issues. Safe travels.

It's not only common rail diesels that have issues with fuel on the Cape. In 2006 my 3.5L V6 Jackaroo got water with a load of Opal "fuel", so I did what was normal and tossed in some metho to fix the issue. The bloody Opal sh*t made the water/metho mix turn to jelly which blocked the fuel filter and fuel pickup when the hot fuel returned to the tank. Was a massive pain it the arse having to change 5 fuel filters back to Melbourne, and then dropping the tank to clean it all, and also new injectors. The 3.5V6 motor is a 100% bulletproof item normally.

Sucks that this happened to you guys, but I'd have to say - glad you guys decided to make an ep about it. Good to see a mechanics thought process on how to diagnose these types of issues. Teachers the rest of us a few things. But time to do a detailed TD42 build ep Will be sure to drop in and say g'day to the boys at Off the Wall Hope it hasn't turned Gary off the Patrol
You guessed right with the injectors. Having spent decades between private workshops & dealers shops, there is night & day between aftermarket scan tools & fully updated professional grade dealer scan tools. As there is a Nissan dealer in Cairns, I would always plug in a dealer scan to get accurate information before spending thousands on parts, just hoping you got it right. You got lucky this time. But for the majority of viewers watching this, factory scanners will "always" be better than aftermarket.
You should have replaced the high pressure pump and flushed the fuel tanks out if you suspected fuel contamination was the cause. Common rail systems need a 2 micron fuel filtration system with water separator. The factory system is only good for warranty period. I use a FASS fuel filtration, water separator, and lift pump.
Dont TD swap it. I know its running now. Do a 200hp 4jj1 swap. Ive heard that workshops name a few times now, definitely stopping by for last minute checks if im ever up that way.
Any chance of taking all your breathers and adding a 1/2 psi air supply to positively overpressure the boxes/diffs/transfer cases making it very difficult for water to enter...even through the gearshift housing?
My zd30 gu patrol had 220k km on it. Was camped at Arthur's Lake tassie. Woke up with a foot of snow on the ground and she wouldn't start. Had to walk 5km just to get phone service. Piston rings had burnt out.
Where did the 30 liters of fuel go that should have been there according to calculations, that's the question. That's a long way to be out on fuel calculations. It's good to do the fuel calculation on every fill up, which also means that you know where your fuel gauge is at although you shouldn't rely on it in more remote areas. I put a Frantz filter before the factory filter on the Hilux when I went up north, it's great peace of mind and keeps the crud out of the injectors and injector pump.
I got to do endeavour rally with Lachlan from off the wall, good bloke and knows his shit, we did cairns to the cape as well but not as much of Tele track due 2 wheel drive cars.
put a primary micron fuel filter and water separator in before the factory filter. especially needed for CRD's and filling in remote stations. a known problem for years. CRD's are super sensitive to shit in the fuel.!
The theory that running out of fuel causes stuff to be sucked up off the bottom of the tank is a widespread myth... The pickup is always drawing fuel from the bottom of the tank, if there was crap to be sucked up it would do it with a full tank too 👍 plus, you have a strainer on the pickup and at least one fuel filter. If you've got shit getting into your IP and injectors you've got something seriously wrong 😅
Stupid comment - try fixing a VD engine that has sucked dirty fuel through it. That would make the Patrol fix look dirt cheap. Did you miss the series on the wife's Landcruiser? The engine was so bad they put a Barra into it.
I thought the same. Had it happen to my CRD. After many hours trying to figure it out, removed the inlet to the EGR and the butterfly was gone. Luckily Nissan had placed an inspection plate lower down in the inlet manifold that has a scoop attached to the back of it. On that scoop was the butterfly. I guess we will find out on the next episode.
@@benlobanov9934 exactly mate I’ve made a video on my YT channel about it. It the cause of so many miss diagnosed issues but it’s so important to check if that valves still attached to the Egr.

Top banana Berto great video fella, from Steve near Chester England 🏴 where the Roman's once lived.
Sucks that this happened to you guys, but I'd have to say - glad you guys decided to make an ep about it. Good to see a mechanics thought process on how to diagnose these types of issues. Teachers the rest of us a few things.
But time to do a detailed TD42 build ep
Will be sure to drop in and say g'day to the boys at Off the Wall
Hope it hasn't turned Gary off the Patrol
Onya Burto. Bloody cars!
Great to see the parts arrive from Cooldrive Auto Parts.
The O RING popping off is normal it happens wen there pulled out ask any shop that dose them regularly it's standard and not a operator error
18:22 is that graham from 4wd actions y62 in the background
Dont TD swap it. I know its running now.
Do a 200hp 4jj1 swap.
Ive heard that workshops name a few times now, definitely stopping by for last minute checks if im ever up that way.
🤢🤮
I think I remember something like that happening to the Navara on the Cape York trip. Probably not the same, but it was towed I think
Best addvert for a pre filter! Cheep insurance for any common rail 👍
Looks like that intercooler has a leak as well on the turbo side end tank
Before changing injectors, change ya suction control valve! They are renowned for failure in 3.0L
lol. Was the issue the whole time haha
Bugger it happened , but great episode to watch
Pulled together and got it sorted.
time for Tyler to shell out for a TD42 crate motor for his old man !
😂
No need to downgrade to a td42
@@jarrod1687 🤣🤣🤣 definitely not a downgrade for reliability... can probably get more power from a TD42 as well
Berto worth his weight in gold
I have the same engine in my patrol, appreciate showing the diagnosis. Would like to see what can be done to prevent this to.
Well I was wrong, wasn't what I thought it was. Never heard of them having injector problems before, but looks like you found the problem in the end.
Isuzu for the long run! Should've put lokkas on the MUX, bigger tyres and run with it
He'd be illegal mate. No insurance. It would go pretty well though hehe
Berto is the man
put a primary micron fuel filter and water separator in before the factory filter. especially needed for CRD's and filling in remote stations. a known problem for years. CRD's are super sensitive to shit in the fuel.!
If only could put a Td in don’t think can zds are very hot and cold mine got 260 thousand cracked piston been rebuilt hopefully holds up
In saying that Thoe how many tds has Tyler been through ?
Had something like that happen to mine
Turned out to be the turbo
All the turbo splines where squashed it was the weirdest thing ever
The orings on the crd injectors ALL do that.
That isn't a sign that they've been out.
Two must haves when you're into camping:
A mechanicly minded and auto electrical minded mates!✔️✔️✔️
Bugger, would be good to get recommendations from Berto what could have avoided this happening, like aftermarket final fuel filter etc
Thanks for finding Off The Wall, when in Cairns I know where to go for checks and service.
Best modyfication zd30 is SWAP engine BMW m57 3.0 diesel
Here nice and early for this one… might want to buy a cruiser for him instead boys🤙🤙
Stupid comment - try fixing a VD engine that has sucked dirty fuel through it. That would make the Patrol fix look dirt cheap. Did you miss the series on the wife's Landcruiser? The engine was so bad they put a Barra into it.
@@einfelder8262Nah the barra is just better than any cruiser or patrol motor 😂
@@JC-zg4xe I didn't say it wasn't. Can't you comprehend a simple sentence?
@@JC-zg4xe Hardly. Nothing wrong with the Patrol 4.8. Barra has to rev too high to make real grunt in a 3 ton 4WD.
@@einfelder8262 Just wanted to add my own stupid comment along with everyone else’s.
SCV. Man I would off started with that and the fuel filter. Nissan 2.5 owner. Been there :P
So was the fuel filtration upgraded?
Egr valve failure. The flap has broken off the valve and rolled down into the inlet manifold. Worth pulling the Egr valve off and check.
Sadly I think the scv was the only problem but at least now it’s fully sorted
Nrma are only useful if you never leave major cities or national freeway. As soon as you go anywhere slightly remote you're on your own.
Not true. A friend had their Mercedes motorhome returned to Melbourne from Halls Creek after the diff blew. It wasn't the next day, but it was done. They took the vehicle to Darwin then to Melbourne.
@@einfelder8262 Halls Creek is literally on the national freeway. Your post seems to agree with what I stated but you started with "not true" so now I'm just confused.
JoeyJr. NRMA= No Real Mechanics Available.
@@JoeyyJr Halls Creek is in the middle of the Kimberley, about as far away from anywhere that you can get. You certainly are confused.
@@einfelder8262 Yeah, in the Kimberley right on the national highway. That's why is got a big "1" written on the main road through town. Look, you learnt something 😉
What’s that spark at 13:13?
You have a fuel issue and you replace the injectors without seeing if changing the fuel filter fixes it?
