I love how you took that tiny but important extra step of making us listen to clips from the actual audio books. It makes a lot of difference. Thank you.
Jane Austen BBC dramatized - it has Benadict Cumberbatch, David Tennant, and Toby Jones what more could you want? Also Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman has James McAvoy and Natalie Dormer. I like Luke Daniel reading The Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne.
Holy shit the audiobook blip from Split Tooth scared the shit out of me (I wasn’t ready) but it also made me want to read/listen to the book desperately
I wish I could get into using audio books. However, I find that if I listen to them while relaxing, I usually find it putting me to sleep. But if I try to listen to them while cleaning or driving, I find that I miss a lot of the details because I’m concentrating on my other activity (esp driving) & then get frustrated because I have to go back & listen or I am lost for the rest of the book!!! Third thing...I usually read faster than it is read by the narrator & I just HATE listening to it at “squirrel” speed...I guess it’s just not for me. I do love how you are able to flip between the two media’s.....& give us a chance to experience it through you!!
I had exactly the same issues as you, but I loved the idea of getting through some of my TBR while I cleaned (I have two kids so I clean A LOT :-P) I persevered and found that it just took some getting used to. I am also quite particular about the audiobooks I listen to - if they are too monotone, my mind wanders. I try to find narrators who are willing to do the voices :-P
My favorite nonfiction/memoir type audiobook I’ve ever listened to was Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. It’s his story of growing up as a mixed-race child in apartheid South Africa. He narrates it himself, and he flows so flawlessly between different languages and accents that it almost feels like a full cast performance. The story itself is also amazing and touching and made me think a lot about what it means to be “different”.
That is also my favorite memoir audiobook. The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer is a close second and is an audiobook must because she incorporates her music.
Omg...that split tooth narration gave me goosebumps...and horror stuff rarely ever gets me...that got me. I loved the gentlemans guide to vice and virtue and my plain jane as audiobook.
Illuminae (and I assume the rest of the trilogy) is an amazing audiobook! It's a full cast and honestly for me personally, I don't think I would have finished the book if it weren't for me listening to it
I really liked this compared to other audiobook rec. Because you gave us a sample of the voices so we could judge for our self if it was something for us.
The ad for this video being audible is just perfect. 😂 Really grateful for the recommendations, I’ve listened to a few audiobooks but really struggle finding good ones.
So many of my favorite books I had trouble getting into the first time reading, but listening got me into it. Mostly the classics I love, several of my favorite modern books I haven't had a chance to read physically because being an adult means my time is far more busy than I would like.
I really love listening to The Silmarillion with all the elvish words and names in there I spend half my time reading it in the pronunciation guide, so listening to the audiobook is great! For full cast audiobooks, I like Dracula. It's written journal style so it's really great to listen to with a full cast. And now I have a few more to check out...thanks Lala!
audiobooks i would recommend: - the flatshare by beth o'leary (2 british narrators with some sound effects) - aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe (narrated by *lin manuel miranda* and yes, you read it correctly) - they both die at the end (3 narrators) - born a crime by trevor noah (narrated by the author who does incredible accents) - noteworthy by riley redgate (features some songs) - seven waya we lie by riley redgate (7 mcs and 7 narrators) - norse mytholgy by neil gaimen (narrated by the author)
Two of my favorite audiobooks are ‘The Themis Files’ series by Sylvain Neuvel and ‘A Plague of Giants’ by Kevin Hearne. Both are full cast and I believe both have sound effects and music. Can’t say if you’d enjoy them or not, but worth looking into if you have not already. One I just listened to recently, which I loved was ‘Dead House’ by Dawn Kurtagich. This one I think you will either really like, or really hate haha. I definitely believe the audiobook make the experience so much better, and is why I rated it so high.
I use hoopla and Libby through my library and it’s awesome!! ✨♥️ i also love a full cast! One of my favorite audiobooks was The Greatest Love Story Ever Told because it was like the real life Ron and Tammy were just chatting about their life. And my least favorite was blue lily, lily blue. I need to go buy the physical book and finish the raven cycle cuz that narrator, NOPE.
Another great audiobook is the audiobook for Illuminae, its a full cast with sound affects that really create an atmosphere thats an entire experience in of itself. I read along with it and it made the book so much better than it already is 10/10 recommend
Meeeeeeee freaking too. Kayla actually didn’t like him narrating the raven cycle but they are definitely my favorite audiobooks. Call down the hawk narrated by him was just as good 💕
I’m glad I found this comment because I was about to suggest Kayla listen to the audiobooks of the Raven Cycle because she likes the series so much. I loved Patton’s narration. It’s the only audiobook out of the many that I’ve listened to that I’ve ever considered buying for my self. To each his own, I guess.🤷🏼♀️
Thank you for sharing the sample clips of each audiobook. Much better than what most book tubers do where they just talk about the books they recommend on audiobooks and then I have to take time to go through each sample to see if it’s right for me. This def saved m time for which books I want to give a try on audiobooks!!
i really loved the audiobook for “with the fire on high” it was the first audiobook that i found that kept my attention and the voice fit so well, i loved it a lot and i feel like it enhanced my reading experience
I only just got into audiobooks last year, and there have been two standouts. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer-one of my favourite series, and though I haven’t truly enjoyed any of the audiobooks of my other favourites, these ones made me love this series even more. Rebecca Soler is a fantastic narrator! She puts so much personality into every different voice that you have zero confusion over who is talking at any given moment. Secondly, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee-again, the narrator just makes this. Christian Coulson put so much comedy and drama into Monty’s voice, and it made me love the character and the book more than I probably would have if I’d read the print book.
Dune is also an incredible audio with a cast of characters, music, and sounds that creep up on you to really make you feel the story. I also loved that the audiobook, in the chapters where different actors speak the dialog, forgo the “she said” and the “so and so sighed” etc and just ACT it out. I know that you’ve just recently read the first one and loved it but it may be something to check out if you ever want to reread that first one or potentially go the audio route for the rest of the series!
Score! "Monday is Not Coming" audio book is available on my Overdrive app via the LA Public Library. I love listening to True Crime books on audio. I just finished "Catch and Kill" by Ronan Farrow.
I’m working my way through the Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy series on audiobook... so far I’ve listened to the first with Stephen Frye narrating and the second with Martin Freeman narrating. They are awesome, both narrators do all the voices and their comic timing is perfection 😍
I listen to tons of audiobooks. It's great for me while I'm working and running around on my busy schedule. I enjoy both full cast and a single narrator and usually listen on 1.25 or 1.5 speed. The best ones recently have beed Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyami, Everyheart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire, The Alienist by Caleb Carr, Rooms by Lauren Oliver and Reading Lolita in Theran by Azar Nafisi.
My all time favourite audiobook is for Lincoln in the Bardo. The whole book is basically a conversation between ghosts (?) so the full cast works really well, particularly when the cast is incredible! I'm pretty sure the standard narration was from the author too, but Nick Offerman, Megan Mulalley, and Bradley Whitford are the ones that really stick in my mind. Interesting that there were so many comedic actors involved in such a moving and interesting book
Yay! I’ve been really hoping you would do one of these videos. I’ve been getting into listening to audiobooks while I work lately and I trust your judgement - so YAY!
Pride is set in the neighborhood I grew up in and still live in. It’s so cool to read/listen to something I relate to on a whole other level. I’ve seen so much of what the book talks about. Elizabeth Acevedo narrating is the cherry on top to a lovely book!
i want to start an audiobook right now, but i’ve only listened to two so far and that’s the fifth wave and the infinite sea - i think the voice actors for the series are incredible. they do a great job handling all their characters voices. i physically read about half of the fifth wave and just couldn’t keep going, but it was so incredibly easy and enjoyable to listen to
I’ve found that I really love horror audiobooks. There is something really cool about sort of being left in suspense while the narrator describes something. Your eyes can’t skip around the page to spoil you or brace you for anything. Just got to let it unfold. My Best Friend’s Exorcism really did a good job of making the best of the audiobook format imo! Really recommend it.
As someone who has misophonia, thank you!! Thank you!! It saved me so much time to go to each book and see if I was going to get triggered by the narrator. It’s brilliant that you add a short clip. Can’t thank you enough!
Audiobooks I loved and recommended -All the Harry Potter books -The Raven cycle -The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy -The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo -The Last Time I Lied -Birdbox -Ready Player One -The Book Theif -Station Eleven -The Grownup -Gone Girl -The Wife Between us
I've listened to a ton of audiobooks and my favorite is definitely The Luminous Dead narrated by Adenrele Ojo. It's a queer sci-fi horror novel following two characters during a caving expedition. Adenrele Ojo didn't just narrate -- she was /acting/. This is such an emotional and terrifying book to begin with, and her performance truly took it to another level. Absolutely phenomenal.
You may not be interested in this recommendation because you didn't like Evelyn Hugo but the audiobook for 'Daisy Jones & The Six' is beyond phenomenal and has a full cast if you ever want to give it a try. Had it not been for the audiobook, i don't think I would've rated it as highly as I did because that book has all the elements I usually hate in books.
Previously, I was only able to listen to non fiction or self help on audio. This year I listened to Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter and now I'm hooked on listening to audio. The Narrators definitely can make or break the book though.
I will listen to a lot of your recommendations at work! Starting a new job that doesn't need my brain that much and they allow us to listen to music or podcast. I'll definetely do that!! The poet X, On the come up, Monday's not coming seems so interesting! I also love Waubgeshib Rice's writing! I can't wait to read them all!
For Sadie I loved that Macmillan released the podcast bits of the book for free. So even if you only have access to the physical book you can still listen to the podcast bits for free.
I’ve listened to all three of Riley Sagers book on audio and enjoyed them. I’m currently listening to the other people audio book and enjoying that as well. The turn of the key by Ruth ware has an amazing audio book. Also scribd does let you sample audio books.
Glad to hear that the other people audiobook is good. I’m going to be listening to that sometime before the end of the month so I can participate in her and gabbys chat
I love audios. It's basically how I get through over half of my reading. I still have yet to fall in love with full casts, and I know I'm so in the minority. I think some of it is because of normal narrators are taught to speak very clearly, and full cast doesn't, which sometimes means they mumble, and because English is not my first language I have to pay a lot more attention to it. One of my favorite audios I've listened to recently was Pet Sematary by Stephen King. Anything narrated by Bahni Turpin is excellent.
I am currently trying to listen to two: Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway read by Juliet Stevenson-and Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God read by Ruby Dee. Both are amazing-and they are really different from each other. I usually struggle with audiobooks but these are both working for me.
Thanks for your recommendations. I add some to my list. I listened to a few previously: Monday's not coming and Sadie and I loved them. The Wayward Children Story I just love. I also enjoyed Cynthia Hopkins reading them. She reads 2 of the 5 books and I just loved it.
currently listening to “Other Words from home” and i totally recommend the audiobook, it’s really helpful to listen how the Arabic words are pronounced and how the main character (who’s first language isn’t English) pronounce English words
You should check out Libro.fm! It's priced competitively with Audible and follows a monthly credit system, but can be linked with an indie bookstore so your purchase goes to them as well, instead of the Big Machine
I found the GoT books are so much easier to follow in an audiobook since the narrator gives each character a unique voice which helps me follow along! Room, Wonder and You were also narrated amazingly!
Thanks for the incredible recommendations!! I don’t typically read audiobooks but a few of these I will be checking out! And a few I will be reading with my eyes.
I love Acevedo's books and narration, she is amazing all around. I have to say that this video was very well put together and it was really informative :) Also, I want to add that Julia Whelan is my favorite narrator, although the story itself is always very important to me. Please make part 2 of this video when you have more recommendations?
I seek Bahni Turpin audiobooks, she’s an amazing narrator..I’ve listened to more than 500 audiobooks... my favorites are definitely biography/autobiographies. Just finished The Dutch House by Ann Patchett narrated by Tom Hanks❤️
My favourite audio book is super niche, it‘s the order of time by Carlo Rovelli. It‘s a physics book, but told by Benedict cumberbatch, so it‘s literally like Doctor Strange telling you how the universe works, just omitting the magic. It‘s so fascinating!!
I wish that I had listened to Sadie instead of reading the physical book because I think the podcast idea would definitely lend itself better to that. Thanks for all the recs! 🙌🏼
Favorite ever, “The Shadow of the Wind” in the stand-alone/could be series ‘Cemetery of forgotten books.’ I listened to all four books in about two weeks and bought them to read with my eyes, too. I just cannot forget how amazing it/they were. Since they were first published in Spanish, it was good to listen to the translations because the names as well as locations in and near Barcelona would have been lost on me stumbling through them.
Technically it's a series, each book can be read as a stand alone but all 4 have some interconnecting characters that are part of the main cast or main character in one book but are secondary characters in one of the other books.
It’s taken me until this year but I listened to Becoming and now I am hooked with audiobooks. I have to walk to work because corona stole my bus service so I get to ‘read’ for an extra hour and 20 minutes every day, on top of my normal reading. Thank you for the recommendations! 😊
I use Libro.fm for my audiobooks! I love them because with a monthly membership (or any purchase) you can support an independant bookstore! My favourite little indi bookstore in RURAL QUEBEC is among them! :D
I know you've read other Libba Bray books but ah you should listen to The Diviners audiobooks -- they are so good and the narrator is one of the best I've ever listened to
Some of my favorites that are AWESOME audiobooks!! Sleeping Giants trilogy by Sylvain Neuvel Illuminae Files trilogy Hunger Games trilogy the new narration Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl I'm Thinking Of Ending Things by Iain Reid Into The Drowning Deep by Mira Grant The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin
Libro.fm is fabulous. They do everything that Audible does and more. AND you can link to a local bookstore so every time you buy an audiobook, the store gets a portion of the proceeds! They're fabulous AND you won't be supporting Amazon.
I think you may like Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. It's nonfiction & narrated by the author, a Potawatomi botanist. It's about Indigenous ways of knowing and understanding plants, and it touches on histories of language, Indigenous people in the United States, motherhood, etc., and it's a very beautiful book.
Great recommendations. I think that the Illuminae series audio books are fantastic. I do not have physical copies, but when I find them at the thrift store I will be rereading the series while listening for a heightened experience. I think that people who struggle with reading plays should check out the audio books, particularly for works of Shakespeare. I would recommend the Treasure Island audiobook narrated by Alfred Molina and The To Kill a Mockingbird audiobook narrated by Sissy Spacek as far as classics go.
Can I just say super quick that this is the most beautiful thumbnail I have ever seen omGOD!!!
Holy shit the audiobook blip from Split Tooth scared the shit out of me (I wasn’t ready) but it also made me want to read/listen to the book desperately
I had not listened to a sample at all, and had ear buds in when I originally listened to it. When I tell you I almost shit my pants-
Me too 😭😭 I’m such a wimp, that’ll be a physical read for me lol
I've never listened to/read an audio book, but I love the idea of them. It's like going back to the origins of storytelling.
P OBie same! Literally same!
I had exactly the same issues as you, but I loved the idea of getting through some of my TBR while I cleaned (I have two kids so I clean A LOT :-P)
I persevered and found that it just took some getting used to. I am also quite particular about the audiobooks I listen to - if they are too monotone, my mind wanders. I try to find narrators who are willing to do the voices :-P
This was me until I started reading along with the physical book
Same 😢 I'm trying to get into them but I keep going back because I got distracted
I listen to audiobooks while knitting or painting.
Agree! Such a great audiobook
That is also my favorite memoir audiobook. The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer is a close second and is an audiobook must because she incorporates her music.
Agree. My favourite audiobook. Otherwise you lose so much by just reading it.
Agreed!
It's a full cast and honestly for me personally, I don't think I would have finished the book if it weren't for me listening to it
Same! With all you said =)
I really liked this compared to other audiobook rec. Because you gave us a sample of the voices so we could judge for our self if it was something for us.
Lala you have such a happy voice! I could see you narrating middle grade 😊
That sneak peek of Split Tooth totally freaked me out 😂
It was pretty intense!
Split Tooth is an incredible audiobook. Highly recommended!
The ad for this video being audible is just perfect. 😂

For full cast audiobooks, I like Dracula. It's written journal style so it's really great to listen to with a full cast. And now I have a few more to check out...thanks Lala!
I'm glad you showed the audiobooks on 1x, because I watch TH-cam videos on 2x so if you'd sped it up to 4x I'm not sure I could have coped.
If you want a good audiobook, Sleeping Giants / Themis Files trilogy is amazing. it's a full cast and just SO GOOD
Yasss
Yes yes yesss
100%
audiobooks i would recommend:
- the flatshare by beth o'leary (2 british narrators with some sound effects)

- noteworthy by riley redgate (features some songs)
- seven waya we lie by riley redgate (7 mcs and 7 narrators)

The Raven Cycle narrated by Will Patton is my absolute fave.
Meeeeeeee freaking too. Kayla actually didn’t like him narrating the raven cycle but they are definitely my favorite audiobooks. Call down the hawk narrated by him was just as good 💕

The audiobook of the turn of the key spooked the shit out of me.
Listening to this right now and it's sooooo good
I loved the book. Might need to listen to the audiobook later on.
Listen to Illuminae!!! 🎧 It’s a full cast!! And amazing!! Actually, listen to Gemina, specifically for the lollipop song.
Hahaha the lollipop song hahaha
i really loved the audiobook for “with the fire on high” it was the first audiobook that i found that kept my attention and the voice fit so well, i loved it a lot and i feel like it enhanced my reading experience
I absolutely love the book furiously happy by Jenny Lawson in audio.

Thank you so much for this video, right now I feel so anxious and this is the kind of chill content that I need
I've read the whole wayward children series on audiobook, definitely a great recommendation!! they're so enjoyable!
I’d recommend both of Kathleen Glasgow’s books in audiobook form, they are both amazing and beautiful
I listen to tons of audiobooks. It's great for me while I'm working and running around on my busy schedule. I enjoy both full cast and a single narrator and usually listen on 1.25 or 1.5 speed.

Bookwyrm Rampant honestly i have never been disturbed by an audiobook until i listened to my best friend’s exorcism
The audiobook of The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is priceless. Long, but worth every minute of it.
As someone who has misophonia, thank you!! Thank you!! It saved me so much time to go to each book and see if I was going to get triggered by the narrator. It’s brilliant that you add a short clip. Can’t thank you enough!
Audiobooks I loved and recommended

-The Raven cycle
-The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
-The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo

Thank you so so much for including the clips! That's actually super helpful
I love Acevedo's books and narration, she is amazing all around. I have to say that this video was very well put together and it was really informative :) Also, I want to add that Julia Whelan is my favorite narrator, although the story itself is always very important to me. Please make part 2 of this video when you have more recommendations?
Ahhhh this is sooo great for Audiobookathon that's coming next month. 💕 I love a lot of these recommendations.
I seek Bahni Turpin audiobooks, she’s an amazing narrator..I’ve listened to more than 500 audiobooks... my favorites are definitely biography/autobiographies. Just finished The Dutch House by Ann Patchett narrated by Tom Hanks❤️
I have been getting into audiobooks recently and this is exactly what I needed!!!
Great video!!! Also this was just on time because I just recently really got into audiobooks and now I have a whole list saved. Thank You!
I love anything read by Lauren Fortgang and Rebecca Soler! Also loved The Martian and The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
That weird ass noise in Split Tooth was on for like 2 seconds and it's creeped me out!
Yessss. I’ve been looking for a vid like this!! Thank you Kayla! You’re always the mvp of booktube! ❤️❤️
Hoopla, 3D cloud, Libby, and liber box are all great audiobook apps for free!
I really enjoyed the what lies between us audiobook! It was my first john mars sad I can't wait to read more!
It’s taken me until this year but I listened to Becoming and now I am hooked with audiobooks. I have to walk to work because corona stole my bus service so I get to ‘read’ for an extra hour and 20 minutes every day, on top of my normal reading. Thank you for the recommendations! 😊
The One audiobook just became available for me on Libby! I’m so excited
I want If We Were Villains and I want it now
Sadie is such a good audio!
The same person does all of Ruth Ware's books on audible and she is PERFECT.
I was also impressed with Miracle Creek on audio.
Bahni Turpin also narrates Children of Blood and Bone, as well as Children of Virtue and Vengeance...she’s a fantastic narrator.
I use Libro.fm for my audiobooks! I love them because with a monthly membership (or any purchase) you can support an independant bookstore! My favourite little indi bookstore in RURAL QUEBEC is among them! :D
I love Bonnie Turpin (sp). I think she is great! When I had scribd, I marked all the books I could that were read by her.
Lauren Fortgang, who narrates the Grisha trilogy, King of Scars as well as Inej's chapters in Six of Crows is absolutely AMAZING!
Last year, I listened to The Help on audio, which included Bahni Turpin -- whose voice I recognized when I listened to a sample of On the Come Up!
I know you've read other Libba Bray books but ah you should listen to The Diviners audiobooks -- they are so good and the narrator is one of the best I've ever listened to
Maria Piovesana yes!!
I'm on the third book of the series and January lavoy is probably my favorite! Julia Whelan is a close second.
YESSSSS I've been waiting for this
Cheryl Strayed’s book is amazing too! I think it’s called Wild
Some of my favorites that are AWESOME audiobooks!!
Sleeping Giants trilogy by Sylvain Neuvel
Illuminae Files trilogy
Hunger Games trilogy the new narration
Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl
I'm Thinking Of Ending Things by Iain Reid
Into The Drowning Deep by Mira Grant
The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin
Libro.fm is fabulous. They do everything that Audible does and more. AND you can link to a local bookstore so every time you buy an audiobook, the store gets a portion of the proceeds! They're fabulous AND you won't be supporting Amazon.
I think you may like Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. It's nonfiction & narrated by the author, a Potawatomi botanist. It's about Indigenous ways of knowing and understanding plants, and it touches on histories of language, Indigenous people in the United States, motherhood, etc., and it's a very beautiful book.
this vid came at the perfect time for me! looking forward to listening to some of these
Just One Damn Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor is one of my favorites in audio and physical form 💙
Locke and Key audio book has a full cast. I listened to it and followed the graphic novels for the visual. Sadie was also amazing.
I listed to my first A.S. King due to your recommendation, Dig. Oh, so good. Thank you. The audiobook was fantastic and Amy read for it too 🥰
Listening to that right now as well 🙌🙌🙌
@@nicoletoohey8078 do you keep seeing Arby's now too?
Loved Sadie, Daisy Jones and the Six, and Down Among the Sticks and Bones (read by Seanan McGuire herself)
I just received an audio book copy of If We Were Villains and I am SO EXCITED now!
