    Is there a point where a light becomes too bright?
    Yes. When you direct a light onto a subject and that subject instantly bursts into flame, the light is almost too bright.

  • @junglejim7664

    Great video! Nothing like "seeing" the differences in the lights. The points made about what it would take to return fire suggest that perhaps we need to tape a mirror to a clean target (with the light behind steel cover) to see just how effective someone could return fire when faced with a light. Also, if you have a more powerful light than your adversary, it might make a difference in the range at which each of you could engage the other.

  • @joshstewart3339
    @joshstewart3339 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Would it be possible to get built proof glass and use the different light options to protect light from getting destroyed and have I IDPA target set up in front of glass and let some of these people shoot towards the light and different distances to put to rest if you can get hits on target by simply aiming at the light. That would put some of the questions to rest. My hypothesis is yes some one who can shoot a hand gun would hit target many times with 15 rounds shooting towards the light. It be very interesting test.

      @@PrimaryAndSecondary - You have said this twice now. Can you expound on it? I also have multiple Olight products and have never had an issue. also, as Joe said, on a weapons light you trigger it on, clear a room, identify your targets, make your shots, etc. and turn it off. You're not navigating cross country for 4-6 hours burning 1000 lumens non stop. I have personally had mine on for an extended period of time (for a weapon light - long enough to practice clearing my house in total darkness multiple times in a row) and never had an issue.

    • @PrimaryAndSecondary
      @PrimaryAndSecondary  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@michaelobrien8892 Aaron Cowan of Sage Dynamics explains it far better than I. I have been in enough situations where I needed continuous output for extended situations that rules out them for any serious work. Because you have not experienced this does not invalidate the issue.

    • @michaelobrien8892
      @michaelobrien8892 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PrimaryAndSecondary - Agreed that just because I haven't had an issue doesn't mean I couldn't at some point in the future. By that logic though you could could say that no one should ever use any gun because every gun on the market has had a jamming issue at some point. lol
      I'm not trying to be a jerk, but you keep saying Olight has issues based on what?
      I was turned onto them by a group I am in and personally know a lot of people that have them without a problem.
      So if you are saying that they have issues what is that based on?
      How many did you test? For how long? Under what conditions? Etc?
      Do you have any videos of this testing?
      Have you contacted the company? Have they responded or done anything to fix this issue?
      To just blanket repeatedly say a product has issues with any other evidence is disingenuous in my opinion.

    as an old school thinker, this shined a lot of light on the question, to flash light or not. The young man in the brown sweater asked and made some great points. I'm not sure Farmer answered his question though. Could you tell what was being held in their hands?Vary important. lights would not be used in combat. But in law enforcement and self defense its vary important to be able to see what they got in their hands.
    The statement about old incandescent vs today's high lumens was vary interesting.

    What about needing those indoors or just outside the house? I'm talking in a home defense scenario. From my playing around with what limited flashlights and weapon lights I have access to I found that if I shined a 1000 lumen light into a room in the house that I would blind myself. I mean it would hurt and I wouldn't be able to see for a couple seconds. I found that at around 350-400 lumens it didn't blind me in the house but I can still see/identify people/items at 50 yards. Of course different beams and color temps will have an affect. I'd like to see someone with more access to different lights try indoor testing.

      @GMRVC1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the Modlite the best too but, having played with all three, I don't agree that it is the winner. The situation/ host weapon seem to dictate which of these 3 weapon lights OKW, PLH, OWL would be best used.
      OWL does everything the OKW and PLH can do and it comes ready to mount. No need to buy ariska or cloud accessories to finish the mounting of the light, just put in the battery, pick right or left hand, torque it down to the 1913 rail. IMHO the OWL is the winner as far as capability combining spill and throw as well as my personal preference for the color. But it does have it's failings...
      The OWL is heavier, takes up more real estate and is kinda expensive. So, if weight and cost is not a consideration, then OWL all the way -- If weight or cost is an issue (and when is in not...) or you cant spare the real estate on a SBR, then the Modlite is a modular fit able to adapt to a mission or need on the fly.

  • @MrMattumbo
    @MrMattumbo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'd be interested in seeing a test within a house (or some similar mock-up) to simulate home defense. I have a theory that too many lumens can be a hindrance in confined spaces because of reflection back at the shooter and just general intensity making it harder to identify the target. Also would like to see consideration toward how it affects the shooter's low-light vision in that situation since even briefly turning on a high-power light could leave you stumbling in the dark instead of aiding your navigation. I know just from playing with my 1000 lumen flashlight that my theory is somewhat accurate, but I'd love to see proper testing and opinions from multiple participants like this. If you're feeling really fancy trying out different colors of paint on drywall and how it affects the amount of light reflected back could be interesting (though a pain in the ass to setup). I think confined spaces would also allow lights with wider beams to shine (pun intended) and offer some perspective on the pros and cons of each.

If the light is too bright just aim it down below where you're looking to get less light within your field of vision, which works even better in reflective spaces since the whole room will light up no matter where the light is pointed, and if you gotta light up a target ruining your night vision isn't really an issue since you'll be engaging the threat and ending it there anyway. There's also the simple solution of keeping one eye closed at all times to maintain its night vision.
      Thanks for the perspective!

      @@PrimaryAndSecondary First off, great video. However, I'm going to call you out a small amount here. A 200 lumen light can be perfectly "effective" and a 1500 lumen light can be utterly "ineffective". A "lower" lumen, wider spill light is much more desirable then a lightsaber in a high-LRV residential structure. No amount of technique can overcome those differences, but they can minimize them to an extent.
      I think you meant to say that you use technique to optimize performance.

    How are these bright lights in a room with white painted walls like you would find in a house? Does the bounce blind you as well?

    • @PrimaryAndSecondary
      @PrimaryAndSecondary  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Technique removes the issue- if lights are pointed at bare walls don't stare at the focus - use bounce and reflection - eyes adjust if you get some reflection (just use the light to see, that's why we have them).

    12:10 - this guy is writing off a very valid, very good question by just saying he is going to have magnification. That's great for him - and perhaps a good number of the folks who stem from wide-open country (like Karl) where magnified optics might be used by civilians and police. Here in the flat, crowded areas - the police have red dots, the civies have red dots. Shutting down a man's damned good question just to have your over-weight say ain't how modern testing is done. Would like to see a follow up.

      Consider that question is dependent on individual's eyesight - 50 yards with OWL and ModLight (and further with OKW) were the only ones providing functional illumination.

    I almost feel like this is only telling half the story. Being able to identify a target is one thing... But how well do the different lights let you *find* somebody? Some of the lights were disdained as "all spill", but if for example you're trying to locate somebody that's trying to evade or hide from you, a highly focused beam seems like a drawback.

    • @PrimaryAndSecondary
      @PrimaryAndSecondary  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All spill means less reaction distance and less ability to cut through ambient or photonic barrier.

    • @GMRVC1
      @GMRVC1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right -- Seems like that would depend on distance, environment, ambient light, etc...
      Feels like the OKW was designed with a purpose in mind , like distance/ throw, it has that tight beam but the lumens are low enough that it looses the intense focus effect over the competitors.

      @@GMRVC1 I think you're correct. Consider it like an optic - a x24 scope is great at 300 yards, but undesirable at 20 yards. Look at how tight the beam is at 10 yards. I myself am far more likely to need a light at 10-20 yards then at 75 yards.

    i would take the surefire h35 1000, it lights up hugely but doesn't have that agressive hot beam
    i mostly use lights for indoors, so i don't need air raid flood lights, i don't want tunnel vision from the overly bright narrow hot beam some of the other lights have
    and i don't want to blind myself if i hit a reflective surface
    it could however use a better lens as the aerial clearly show it was less "sharp" than other lights
