    For those of you that have produced negative comments, may we see the videos that you did on assembling an engine? I thought not, while you may not agree with this assembly, I feel that it was very well planned and executed if you have a thought or improvement provide it. Having said that if you cannot provide a better service then your negative comments are no different then your criticisms. Making them both worthless. Thank you for your series of videos I felt they were very informative.

      I do this to help as many people as I can. This is done along side my house, in my garage, and in my driveway. It is not done in a professional shop with the latest and greatest facilities and tools. I want to give people confidence so they can do this themselves. I am happy that you benefited from the video.

    David this video series is great. I see a lot of people trying to correct everything you did throughout the entire build. There were some precautionary things that could have been done better but I would have to make it a point that completing the build outside with two ratchets, a few sockets, a screwdriver and two hammers, makes you one hell of a dude in my book. Especially if your wife let you live after getting antifreeze all over the driveway. :) And if half these people knew what the hell they were doing, they wouldn't be watching your video in such detail in the first place. Old school my friend.

      I wanted to show the procedure for a regular person who wants to rebuild a motor. I want to give them confidence to do it themselves. Many videos show it done in a super clean shop with all the special tools, who is going to give it a try watching them?
      Driveway - my wife is real nice about it. I usually clean if after every major job. It mix Clorox and wash machine detergent together in a shallow pan and then pore it on the bad spots and rub it in with my foot. Let is soak in for a while and see how much come off. Next day, when it is dry, I pore kitty litter on the same spots and rub it in again and let that set. I then sweep it up and it is ready to go for another oily job.

    Hey David I was wondering what book you used to rebuild this engine. I am rebuilding my first engine and I am pretty clueless on how to do it. This video helps and I was wondering if u could maybe help me out and give me some tips and pointers, and I have a few questions I was hoping you could answer.
    1. What kind of oil do you use to lubricate everything.
    2. What is the importance of using the plastic measuring thing to calculate the clearing on the crankshaft, and where do u get the stuff to do it.
    3. Where do. You get a ring compressor
    4. Where did u learn to do all this

    When doing head bolts they go in 3 steps 25#, 45#, 65#, never do then all at once to full torque. Also most head bolt have a washer under them to sped out the force.

    well there's another dude on TH-cam who really builds engines and explains professionally how to do it my vintage iron 7512 that dude knows his stuff and explains everything in detail and why I mean this guy's building engines outside I'm surprised that engine don't blow in the first month what about for material he put his fingers on the bearings not cool also head bolts should be coated with the Teflon coating on the top portion of the threads and a little oil on the bottom threads some of those bolts go through water galleries when putting in pistons you gotta clean those bars and clean them again everything has to be clean it's like doing an operation any amateur could do what he did it's the little things that keeping Engine running for a long time also on flat tappet with this you need to put a zinc additive otherwise that cam shaft will wear out instantly. even ring gap you can't just throw the rings in the cylinder you gotta make sure they're square before you put your feeler gauge in the gap , you can't eyeball stuff it's got to be precise

    Still no assembly lube? You should use lube on all bearing surfaces, especially the lifter base where it's going to contact the camshaft. It's especially critical on the cam and lifters because those are metal to metal surfaces, unlike crankshaft bearings, and they need initial protection on first startup.

    • @shogunMR
      @shogunMR 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      looked to me like he put oil on them

    • @512kjt
      @512kjt 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He did but the oil is thin enough that it will eventually drip off completely. Assembly lube has thicker characteristics that allow more adhesion to the metal surfaces and therefore more protection when the engine is first started up.

  • @moparmagnum928
    @moparmagnum928 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi David when installing the lifters and pushrods after taking all the slack out you need to turn 3/4 off a turn . but what do you do when finish installing al the lifters and pushrods and rotate the crank a full turn but there is still a little play in the rockers and pushrods you can move the pushrod with your thump and finger . do you tighten them a little further in the firing order method ? everytime you install lifters in the firing order the piston need to be in the up position is this correct ? . i am doing a standard rebuild of a chevy 305 sb in a trans am and was following your video's on how to .Many thanks in advanced

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      After you rotate the engine a few times and you have slack in the rockers, tighten until there is no slack, then tighten 3/4 turn.
      When the piston is on the up position and both valves are closed (this is when the spark plug will fire) this is the best time to make your 3/4 turn adjustment. You can check this by looking at the lifters themself and see that they are both down into the block.
      Understand?

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bored the cylinders to .030" over, and the crankshaft was destroyed, installed new cam bearing, new freeze out plugs, cleaned oil passages in block, and changed the new pistons on old rods. I redid the heads myself, used same keepers, springs and valves, put on new seals. Purchased a new rebuild kit, piston (oversized), rings, crank and bearing, camshaft and bearings, new lifters, same push rods, new timing chain and sprockets, oil pump, fuel pump and water pump. A lot of internal parts. I wanted to keep the car as original as possible, the numbers match. I really don't want a SS because I like to drive this as much as I can and I don't burn the tires that much.
      This is a California car so I did not have to take it off the frame because it is not rusted on the bottom. It still has most of the original tar from the factory. The sun eats the paint and the interiors over time but it is not like the New York where they use salt on the roads. First 29 years of my life. The cars get eaten alive.
      I don't work on it much anymore, it does not need anything, all the work is done. Putting gas in it is my main thing. It only gets about 10 to 12 because I drive it aggressively in the city because it is fun.

  • @CommanderKlag
    @CommanderKlag 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn't see or hear where you say anything about the required thread locker on the head bolts, which MUST be new head bolts. As, old ones have been streched. Using old head bolts even with locker will cause them to become lose soon over time resulting in very bad engine issues including engine failure.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't put any thread locker on the bolts and I even use the old bolts and never had any trouble. If the threads are bad or the head of the bolt in a little rounded, then I use a new bolt. Everyone does it a little different.

    I have always seen that when you install rockers to check your adjustment. the rocker should have no slack but the rod should be able to turn back and forth.. is this not true or just extra precaution? cause I didn't see you do it

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In video about 21:28, I tighten the rocker arms until there is no slack but I did not turns the rods back and forth. Since these are hydraulic lifters they need to be tightened. So once you take out the slack, the book says 1 full turn but I only tightened them 3/4 turn.
      If these where solid lifters, I would have to get a feeler gauge adjust then to the correct tolerance.

      +Robert Woodbury Snapon. I got it from my dad about 1965, and he had it for years, so I don't know how old it is. Maybe it was on it the first ones they made. It is good to put a pipe on it for the extra hard to get off bolts.

      +David Lis Thank you for the reply! It looked like a Snapon. Back when Snapon and Blue Point were an item, they produced that styled ratchet from 1927-1935ish. They are absolutely a rare gym. You're a very lucky man!

    to the dude or female that was complaining about my punctuation I didn't realize this was grammar class... and I was just stating a point I'm sure the engine will run and he knows what he's doing however sometimes a little constructive criticism might help people to learn things we're always learning and being taught I've been doing collision repair and working on engines my whole life and suspension that would be about 25 years professionally however I'm sure if somebody criticized and gave me some advice I would take it cuz I'm not an expert and never will be we're always learning so my point is other engine builders take very precautious measures to be clean especially in this bearing installation and he didn't I was just making that point oh here's your commas and periods,,,,.......

      +John Giordano Positive criticism is always acceptable. There is always a better way to do things. I do not have all the answers. This is how I was taught how to do it and it has worked for me. I made this video to show people how I do it and not to be afraid to do it yourself.

" Given that you are crying about someone giving you constructive criticism on your poor grammar and lack of English understanding, you have shown that you would not take advice if someone gave it to you.

    ON THE LIFTERS THEY HAVE TO PUT THEM IN OIL AND PLUNGE THEM WITH A PUSH ROD TO PLUNGE THE OIL IN THEM BEFORE INSTALLING. THAT WOULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE ON THE LAST 3/4 OF TURN OF THE ROCKER NUT THE ROCKER WOULD PUSH THE VALVE STEM DOWN OPENING THE VALVE WHEN THE LIFTERS FILLED WITH OIL WHEN ENGINE IS CRANKING OVER TO START.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I do is prime the engine before I start it up using an electric drill and a fake distributor shaft that connects to the oil pump. I let it run until the oil come up through the push rods, this fills up the valve lifters with oil. Your method is another way of doing it. The manual says 1 full turn but everyone that I talked to including the machine shop owner suggest on 3/4 turn.

  • @CommanderKlag
    @CommanderKlag 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yea, You actualy put a lube on the head bolts. They tend to work their way out over time. The engine will not hold together. It will become lose in critical areas. I once had a guy tell me it was ok to tamp the Harmonic balancer on with a block of wood and a hammer. Assembling an Engine and Building a Engine are two different things. Most everything you did was good except for that. Unless I missed the area where you did instruct on head bolts.

    Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
    from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
    Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by
    reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated
    central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down
    all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From
    2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as
    exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox
    oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no
    investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even
    created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.

      I think this green movement to going to far. I do not believe that may people are for this but the politicians are pushing this. Wait until everyone get on electric cars than there will be a electric shortage. Build more nuclear power plants. They say it is clean energy until there is a problem and it pollutes the area for life. Just look at Russia and Japan for starters. Radiation does not go away. I believe that the Rothchild family owns 80% of all the uranium mines in the world. Something is really wrong.
