Quick follow up. My thought from yesterday was right. He tunes the D string up to E and plays in E minor. In later years he plays in E flat minor as his voice has got lower. But he doesn't use a capo, so given that he's in the keys of E minor or E flat minor he must be tuning the D string up to E. Not a big deal - the tuning ends up being the same as this one - just a tone higher. No criticism intended. Just 2 musos trying to figure out a conundrum :)
Stefy, I tried to reply directly but had difficulty signing in for some reason. Thanks for the comments. The guitar is a Larrivee J10 that I purchased in 1991. Its a very big sounding guitar. In the video it's recorded (along with voice) thru an AudioTechnica 822 Stereo mic (about 5 feet away) in a cement room in Baja Mexico. Also I should comment on the thoughts from Jerry's Guitar Bar sometime back. In the video I make a comment about Mr Brown putting the capo on the first fret, bringing the tuning up to Eb minor. Its certainly unlike me to come up with something like that out of thin air but Jerry is right. I'll be hanged if I can now find evidence of that on TH-cam and I certainly didn't mean to lead anybody astray. So I'm as perplexed as anyone at this point . Maybe better to just play the song, which I had to re-learn from watching my own video. Weird! Larry
very, very nice Larry ! thanks for posting..... I just can't get that "travis" thing going with my thumb, i guess my mind is wired backwards....very frustrating for me.
The problem here is that JB doesn't use a capo on this song - not now (when he plays it in E flat minor) or in the early 90's (when he played it in E minor). You can see the evidence for this on many youtube vids of him playing it. So it still has me baffled. Unless he's reinforced the neck of his guitar to take an open D tuning raised 2 steps (open E minor), this can't be answer. It's weird. I can almost always figure this stuff out, but this one has beaten me (and everyone else) so far.
Really good. Amazing guitar work. Thanks for sharing.
A fine rendition of a powerful song!
awesome contribution mate. thank you
Beautiful rendition
Larry, what a great, great rendition of this song. Touches me like brown playing it himself. My hats off brother....
Ralph

Nice job! I have been messing with this in standard tuning for a long time. Might have to give it a shot in open D minor. Thanks for posting this.
