Great report Dan. Certainly a very viable alternative to the usual Asian retirement destinations such as Thailand and the Philippines. And they play Cricket in Sri Lanka.....a bonus for us aussies 😊
Ive watched your videos on and off for a couple of years now. Thank you for all you do. I've been living in the Philippines since September 2023, not really a low cost location, Tacloban. My costs are high here. I live in a two bedroom furnished apartment downtown. I'm now motivated to move to a better location. I saw Dumaguete (spelling) in this report. I'll investigate. I'd love to move to Boracay but I think it would be too expensive. I live on $2800/month. I also get a pension distribution once a year. I'll take a look at your report online. Thank you for all you do. You are the best stream on places to live.
If you have 2800 a month you can live almost anywhere outside of the US and certain places in Europe. How much do you think the locals make anyway? Try Colombia!
@@vijerodelmundo I'm well aware of the average filipino monthly salary. I do not live like a Filipino. $2800/month is not alot of money. I still have to choose wisely.
Hello Dan! Thanks for another great video. I really appreciate how concise you are while dispensing really important information. I enjoy going to bars so thank you for including places you went to. Happy Vagabonding!
I was just thinking about Sri Lanka. Ive already connected with a school there to potentially teach english. I just have to get use to a 500.00 USD salary a month
From what I have seen about Sri Lanka, It seems very similar to Kerala and Kanniyakumari in India. My ancestral village is in Kanniyakumari. The only concern for me is my background. I am of Indian Tamil background. I know there is a history, and there was some issue between India and Sri Lanka in the 1980s during the height of the LTTE conflict. That is the concern
400 dollars you will survive in philippines, just be frugal, eat healthy food, like vegetables. Rent from 100 to150 dollars, the remaining 250 dollars you can use for your monthly expenses.
Always superb and very informative videos. In 2024, please what are the top 3 cheapest SE Asian countries, in the provinces near the beach, to retire to on a budget?
Here are my top 15 in the world. Go to any of these countries and live off the beaten path and you are talking 20 to 30% cheaper if you are smart about it. th-cam.com/video/p3HowPfXmDc/w-d-xo.html
Nice video, it has been quite a while since you presented a new place that you haven't been to. One question, in your budget you had an amount for 'entertainment' what kind of entertain is there in these places besides going out to a bar, or a bar with live music? For an older retiree such as yourself. beaches can get boring after a period of time, so what exactly is there for entertainment? I know at these beach towns there is no 'theater' or music concerts other than music for the younger set. PS: Visa run can one make a two day run to India and return and keep doing that?
I became very intrigued with the cost of living and atmosphere. I am retired for 5 years now and living in Canada is bleeding me dry. My income is only about $3200/month. I am single 65 years old and looking to live my life the way I intended it should be after working 42 years in Ironworking. Hard and breaks your body. Anyway am I dreaming by wanting to move to southeast Asia or can I survive comfortably. I barely spend money but don't want to go broke by this government. Yes or no. I did live in Cuba for a year at 42 years old so I know what hot is but if I have air-conditioning, I will survive. Thank you for your insight.
This is a very informative video Dan! Glad to have found your channel. What do you think about the heat? I am Sri Lankan, but these days I feel like moving to Antarctica if that was an option! Still watching the video. You mentioned the temperature. But due to humidity it feels a few degrees more.
One area you don't cover on the visas for the countries you review is a marriage visa. In some countries if you marry a local you are in, others like Thailand you still need to show proof of income at the same rate if you were not married, or the local must prove a certain level of income. Reply

Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan

The thing about retiring in an Asian country is that one might possibly have to give up their Christian faith, no? I'm Catholic and very devout. I would love to move to a paradise island where the sea is blue and sand white, but I will never forfeit my faith for such a lifestyle where you are not allowed to practice your faith. Christianity is being persecuted mercilessly in so many countries now. Is there a possibility you could mention what religion is practiced, or if Christianity is persecuted in the countries you visit? Thank you for your work
@@ScooterOnHisWay2024 - I would rather practice my faith and be sure my soul is going to a good place eternally, than to spend time in a temporary place, just to live a hedonistic lifestyle without my faith. I couldn't go a single hour without my Catholic faith You must be a person who lives without God in your life, and only enjoys the temporal things this world offers. When all is said and done, your soul could possibly end up in a pretty terrifying place. Go watch the videos of people who died and went to hell, like Dominic Morrow, who was a gang member in Chicago and was shot twice and died, went to hell for 3:47 minutes. I'm sure once you watch his testimony, you'll think differently about your hedonistic lifestyle.
Check your sources friend. Vey few countries require you to give up Christianity. And I don't go to any of those countries. If that is what you are reading online somewhere you need to consider more reliable sources. Because someone you are listening to is talking shit just for clicks.
Sri Lanka is predominantly a Buddhist country. Buddhists 70% Hindus about 12% Muslims about 9% Christians 7.6% of which 6.2% are Catholic. They all coexist peacefully. However if you go to Negombo, west coast of Sri Lanka (resort town), they are predominantly Catholic.
All religion is a curse upon humanity which fortunately we are evolving beyond. Gods are a human construct designed to enslave us. Not that difficult to give up your imaginary friend and free your mind and make the world a better place for all of us.
@@VagabondAwake it's not about what I'd prefer. In México, there's been a shift, and locals are calling us immigrants. They say we move there because we can't afford to retire in our own countries.
Too much of a good thing. Vagabond has always promoted to remain humble and respect the locals. I am sure many Americans in Mexico are just the opposite like they are in their homeland. All of these TH-cam slow travel and digital nomad content creators need to form an association and work together to emphasize values to maintain while being a visitor in other countries similar to “Jante Law” - Nordic values of not acting like you are something special. Don’t be showy or brag. Remember, you are a guest in their home, remember this and be respectful of this fact.
I spent over 30 years in Finland as a foreigner and I've been called many things, but as an Italian I've never had the honour of being referred to as an expat. Despite a university degree and a career in the Finnish government I have always been called an immigrant, among other things 😅
