  • EXPAT MENTAL HEALTH IN Thailand 2: Alcohol, Thai girls, Scams, Money, Social Media.
    The story of a self confessed idiot as he attempted to change his life by moving from London to Buriram to marry a woman he met online. The combination of booze, awful women, bad decisions, scams and living your life online can only end one way, and that’s messy.

    I was engaged to a Thai girl before the pandemic. Her family wanted a lot of money for me for the singsod thing. I later found out she had a huge credit card debt and she was well behind on her car payments for her Honda city sedan. It was evident to me that she didn’t love me and was just using me to inherit her debt and pay it off for her. The last I heard from her was that the court in Thailand had summoned her but because of the first lockdown during the pandemic her court hearing had been postponed. I used the pandemic as an excuse to leave Thailand and sever all ties with her and her family. I was pretty heartbroken but I realized that I had dodged the biggest bullet of my life. Never doing that again!

    Gosh, I've been to Thailand ten times and never had anything but fun. I realized long ago that all relationships are transactional, and if the Thai bar girls tried their best to make me believe they loved me, I knew it was not me they loved, but I was so grateful for the fantasies they created for me, I willingly met their needs in the form of cash, always more than they asked for. And I don't begrudge Thai women their schemes to get my money. After all, were it not for the income disparity, why would any lovely young Thai lady spend time with a geezer such as myself?

    • @jonhobson3592

    • @MrPearlmasters1
      @MrPearlmasters1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Isn’t it always transactional. I have a very rich older friend in the UK who is and older guy and he’s with a young sexy blonde. He understands the deal and doesn’t let her take him for more than he can afford. I think that’s the key here unless you are happily married. Understand what the deal is. They want you for 1 purpose and 1 purpose only. You want them for 1 purpose only. Usually because we are older men and they are gorgeous SE Asians that are the stuff of male fantasy. As I said earlier, don’t pay what you can’t afford long term. As my friend said to me. “Don’t ever marry the pretty ones”🤣

    Excellent report. I have lived and worked in Thailand, married a Thai - still going strong after 27 years. Living in the UK. One big problem with Thailand is foreigners can't own land or houses or work without permits, this forces the gullible to buy property in their wive's names - and this often ends up a disaster. Lots of Johns still in Thailand.

Still, I have never understood how a man from a rich western country, with all the material needs satisfied, would want to pack up his stuff and start a new life in a poor Asian province with someone he barely knows. And then when things go horribly wrong, we Thais, as you can see in some comments, get tarred as wicked lizards, manipulative, etc.

      @theasianjaywalker4455 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@drirene57 I get what you're saying but in this kind of story I disagree. It's neither 'head' but its the heart. I feel like I've seen it (and been him?) so many times now. It's men who've had tragic divorce(s) and/or strings of failed attempts, some just never really met the right one and middle age comes along. 40 is coming and going, 50 arrives. This kind of man can have several converging matters of the heart:
      1. What is life without someone to love, the special other, a romantic at heart really, marriage, a home, get old together
      2. Whether it's to show the parents, the circle of friends and family or an ex-wife ex/gf - finally he's got a pretty lady!
      3. The existential crisis of middling-aged men that stares into the abyss. What gives life meaning?
      This is why a brilliant MIT professor got duped into carrying drugs for a fictional South American 'fiance', this is why a seemingly street savvy British bus driver is absolutely trusting and to the end believing it's surely all worth it and nope he's no dummy, no naive fool, is otherwise good at warning other mates of nefarious women and yet he goes blind. It's how Marc Anthony, capable of brilliant greatness and outsmarting entire armies kills himself over some Egyptian woman after effing his life, her life, his countrymen and friends lives too and even hers. (she probably didn't kill herself and split some money with her aunty) and on it goes.
      This kind of man isn't a teenage boy nor even a desperate 40 year old virgin either but almost certainly did all that just fine for plenty of years and would, if anything, are now desperate for something beyond sex, more meaningful and to their own peril, for reasons beyond the physical pleasures of life. These are matters of the heart imo, almost always.

    A well told cautionary tale Pat. John's suicide is certainly tragic but until you revealed that twist to the story my only thoughts were that this guy is really quite naïve. His inability to read the situation, bad decisions, coupled with his active alcoholism was his undoing. I sat next to a grossly overweight (borderline morbidly obese) young man on a return flight from Thailand many years ago . He was returning from his first trip to the Land of Smiles where he had become engaged to the girl of his dreams . They had met online . He showed me her photo , she was an absolute stunner . The lad was over the moon . He loved how Thai women "didn't care about physical appearance" (his words).
    I have often wondered what became of that young man .
    My Thai wife and I were staying in Bangkok about ten years ago , just around the corner from Soi Cowboy. We stopped into an internet Cafe/ photo printing shop to have a photo book made up of my parents first trip to Thailand.
    While we were waiting we noticed a young lady in her Soi Cowboy "work uniform" sending heartfelt emails to her list of 5 or more (she had a notebook) farang boyfriends on several different continents .
    Friends , it's a jungle out there , hope for the best , but plan for the worst .

    Hi Pat
    I'm quite new to your channel.
    An observation ;
    The topic is not without importance but I thought it was a topic at variance with your normal presentations.
    Where are the khlongs and the alley cats ?
    I thought the topic was somewhat depressing and not unique to Bangkok or Thailand.
    Oh ..yes....tangentially..
    You mentioned in a video I recently viewed that you had great appreciation of Edward Woodward as the equilizer .. surely your too young to watch at that time?
    regardless
    Thanks for another interesting and informative vlog.

Even local Thai males avoid doing that if they have the choice. He should had brought his wife live with him in London or Bangkok.

    I know a guy who had a very similar story (but without such a tragic ending, but he did end up broke) he got taken for a ride with a Thai wife and her family. We all saw it coming a mile off from the first time he got involved with her. He sent money to her all the time after only meeting her on holiday. She was a bar girl who asked him to send her money so she didn't have to go and sell herself. My friend was totally blind yet totally in love with some girl he hardly knew, who lived half way around the world. We all tried to warn him, but it fell on deaf ears, and his attitude was as if we was all jealous and trying to get in the way. All we could do was sit back and say 'i told you so' when it was all over. He even got ripped off in the divorce with so called 'Thai laywers' demanding money for the divorce to go through smoothly. I felt sorry for him but he was so naive. Since then he has married a Philipino lady and we all thought 'oh no! Here we go again'. But thankfully this marriage seems to have gone OK. This new wife has come to the UK, she goes out to work, they have 2 young kids, and they have been happily married for 8 years now. The new wife definitely seems genuine and a nice girl. Perhaps at first she may have seen it as a free ticket out of her poorer country, but she has seemed loyal for 10 years now and I have never seen any hint of her trying to take advantage of my friend. I guess this story just goes to show that not all foreign brides are just out to rip you off, and that there are plenty of genuine ones out there too, but you definitely do have to be careful.

    Thanks, Pat. Parts 1 and 2 are very insightful. I think the challenge for immigrés to Thailand is establishing realistic expectations for life post-arrival and I suppose there are countless stories of unrealistic dreams being shattered. I have found in my experience that expats who are not successfully integrating into Thai (or any foreign) society tend to draw inward into like-minded circles of similarly disaffected persons that serve as negative feedback loops which only to greater depression and paradoxically greater loneliness. I've seen this before in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and is not a problem confined to Thailand; but I would add that Thailand's magic appeal probably makes the rude awakening even ruder. Insightful and educational videos such as yours may help to reduce these cases in the future; so, thank you for that. Cheers, Sir. RPS

    Very sad story. Even I am Thai I still have to be careful about Thai woman because you don't know them at all. You don't know what kind of family or education they have. It is the same everywhere when you looking for a woman you much take time to know her first. You have to look around and choose the one you think she the best. Take your time and don't think I just slept with her and now I am responsible for her because she is Thai. Time is changed some Thai woman will sleep with you before marries but some with acting it a big deal just to get you marries her. But some are real they don't sleep around and having sex is not something they do when they like someone and they like to do it when you really going to marries her.

    First time I went to Thailand 2 decades ago I met a guy on my way who said he’s meeting his future wife. He had been prior so had seen her in person.
    When this guy and I went to one of those bars, there she was! “WTF?” I thought. She looked at me and asked me to sit with her. She didn’t know I knew the guy. “Right, so you’d like some fun with me eh” I thought.
    She kept looking at me but of course, this guy and her agreed to get married and go to the village. I felt sorry for both of them. He thought he hit the jackpot but she’s only with him for the cash and eventually probably move on with someone she truly loves.
    I’m glad I noticed this on the first day/night. I didn’t believe anyone and just had a good time, left with a smile. It was nice to feel like a king albeit as long as I had some money to keep everyone happy.
    Thailand is great for a holiday. Heck, it’s a great place to retire for a few months of the year too! I wouldn’t stay permanently nor would I get involved with anyone heavily. Have your fun, be respectful and GTFO until your next holiday.

Yet all it really did, was except for burning through tons of money for venture capitalists, was to give people a taste of how seductive the ability to manufacture yourself online could be. not only he was scammed once but twice (nuk and the layer). scamming must not be so common in london making him less cautious in life. Third world countries are the countries where scamming is so prevalent. Its so common often normalized. Their politicians are not the only ones corrupt.

    In my previous comment, I mentioned that my brother married a Thai woman also I’m led to believe and die about five years ago he was four years younger than I am. His, remember speaking to me on the telephone and telling me how much she loved him and how badly he had been treated. She told me that she had spoken to a lawyer and wished to take the hospital the doctors and a few other characters to court for mistreatment and for not being able to save my brothers life - in her words her husband. Would I fund this? Well, no. I explained that we had a falling out when I wouldn’t lend him £5,000 to assihim with a lawsuit resulting from a land and house deal in Tasmania. And yes, he was an English language teacher. He had joined up with a scheme in Australia. I was quite astonished that he was accepted, given that he had no formal qualifications, having left school at GSE grade (whether he obtained his GSCs or, I don’t know. I’ grant him one thing, he did learn enough Thai to get by. I have been to Thailand a few times when travelling between Here in England to Australia and back. New Zealand also. However I never saw anymore of Bangkok that what you find is the British Airways club lounge - free drinks and comfy lounge chairs, A funny thing happened on one visit to the lounge, I poured myself a decent glass of Cointreau, and sat down to read the Guardian. A very attractive young stewardess asked if everything was alright, before whisking off with my half finished drink - she prolly thought it was just melted ice. I nearly called out to get it back (it’s expensive stuff). Then sensibly walked over to the bar, and poured myself another!
    I feel sorry for John’s family, but have you any idea of the effect these ‘one under’ suicides has on the poor terrain drivers? I don’t think people take this into account when suicidal types jump in front of trains. Sure we all feel for the family, but never about either the driver or railway woes, police etc, who deal with the aftermath of ‘on line’ deaths - excuse the pun. I am often why I am alway being chided for not taking part in any form of social media, apart from emails and the odd TH-cam comments.

      To be frank I have zero sympathy for John, he didn't listen and thought he knew it all. Booze played a part by boosting his ego.

    G'day pat ,, A sad ending indeed but he only had himself to blame , the story was oh so predictable, and well performed many times over where there is some one desperate for a change , no knowledge or any kind of history travelling there ! meant he was a sucker waiting to depart with his long hard earned money , then being gullible thrown in meant his life will soon change forever ! all for wanting to be happy, a sad end but well written about many times on many blogs , for me his change was doomed from the start ! so even if this video save's just one from the ultimate its worth it , i think most of us have a few stories that we know of that fit into this category, i can think of a few funny ones lol , another good video PAT.. Catchya...

      Hey Steve, hope you're well, and you're absolutely right, he can only blame himself. He couldn't even take the time to do a bit of research or use common sense. He could've found a few hundred stories online!!!
