I like how you talk, how you express yourself, sounding neither pompous nor boring, staying tactful from start to finish (mentioning different points of view regarding the same subject), but also making subtle right-on-target remarks without insulting or… belittling anyone. TH-cam can be… too much at times, with guys exaggerating in order to… make noise around their channel. I much better prefer your “I share the content I enjoy producing without being too full of myself” approach, if that makes any sense (my English is a never-ending work in progress).
The expat who warns you against getting over pissed and into trouble (as he knows the area and everybody inside-out), who then gets over pissed, and into trouble (with everyone).
As a woman who has lived in Thailand and lost my ex to a Thai lady not just one but two I might add, I must admit I found this vlog to be both a bit amusing and sometimes rather sad. Nevertheless I roared at the guy who thought there was no place for woman in Thailand. These people obviously know only one part of this beautiful country. Despite one divorce and many return visits I still love it there and there are many beautiful places yet to visit. Thank you for your interesting historical vlogs over the last 2 years they have been both interesting and kept me positive during these challenging times🙂
G'day , As one who has been stereo typed it did piss me off , I have travelled around Thailand for over ten years and seen many places others haven't, so when I was told by someone who wasn't part of the conversation I was just a typical man going to the usual places I lost it but the lady I was talking to agreed with me , so be part of a conversation or know the person before you judge, I have met many Western women with thai boyfriends enjoying Thailand aswell , easier to judge than to know i suppose, Catchya..
You always find Nice locations for your clips :-) One of the stereotypes you missed was the “Muay Thai Champion”. To be fair, you mainly see these in the south or on the islands but they can also be spotted in Bangkok. The island type you are running along the beach in the obligatory Muay Thai shorts shadow boxing as they go. But the city ones wear the Muay Thai t - shirts from markets that always seem to depict a fighter throwing a knee
While all stereotypes are generalisations, it's easy to recognise aspects of all these. The worst, for me, is the old Thai hand who really gets Thailand and knows all the tricks and knows what Thai people are like etc. I think the beauty of Thailand (and most other places for that matter) is that anything you think you know will always be confounded if you keep your eyes and mind open. I met some of the nicest people I ever met in my life amongst the farang-in-Thailand community (and some of the worst and the most desperate too). Thanks for another great video.
My wife (Thai) and I are both mid-70s. She had been in the US for 40 years... University and then career. We met and married then later decided to spend the rest of our years in the Kingdom. Her family in Thailand are all retired professionals like us. We decided to move back to Thailand and build a retirement house near them in rural Prachinburi. It's quiet and peaceful and I rarely see another Westerner. We are certainly not millionaires, I rarely drink and don't "cat around". Most of our village knows me as do the monks at our local Wat. I'm never subject to "dual pricing" save for my frequent trips to Khao Yai. After 10+ years I still find this the most comfortable retirement.
The first time I heard about any of that was many, many years ago long before TH-cam and long before I ever visited Thailand, when a European friend told me about their co-worker in Europe who went to Thailand and married a street prostitute and got her with him to Europe and how she doesn't speak a word of the language and what kind of marriage they have. No judgement intended. It is rather sad that some people need this sort of scene.
Thanks Pat for the upload. I am sure there are labels of foreigners in Bali, Boracay, Palawan, and even Singapore. The hard truth is there is a nasty rep for those foreigners looking for good time in Pattaya for example and the girls are there more than happy to serve ( for baht course) and the business owners too. Its mutual - there is demand and supply.
@Trevor Smith is proper marriage to your proper partner, best friend, lover, soul mate etc. the same as paying a prostitute for sex in your eyes? ie. Is marriage just a way to get sex for you? Or, perhaps the prostitutes offer you love and a close relationship? You mention 'paying up front' so I assume you're paying bar girls or similar. Is it the same? However jaded and old I am now, I still remember how it felt early on with my wife. In love. All was wonderful. Prostitutes in Thailand have never given me that, unless I was totally taken in and fooling myself. Something I, and many others, have experienced. But I found out in the end that I was an idiot.
I laughed a lot at this video Pat. Very cleverly put together without causing offence. When I told my friends and work colleagues I was heading off to Vietnam I got all the wow's how exciting etc etc. When I told the same groups I was off to Thailand again I got a very different reaction. Lots of smirking and nudge nudge wink wink looks. It is a bit strange how people react who have never set foot in the country and probably are completely clueless to the wonderful varied landscapes, cultures and ethnic groups to be found in the Land of Smiles. John
Enjoyed your vlog as always, and take a lot of what you shared as tongue in cheek. It is too easy for all of us to judge, but then we should also be prepared to be judged. You can only hope everyone finds what they are looking for (farangs & Thais alike!) and don’t get hurt in the process. Thanks krub 🙏
I find it very amusing observing locals trying to find out if i fit a stereotype by asking (sometimes silly) questions. I just skip some questions and leave them guessing. This often develops into great friendships
Thank you Pat for this great one !!! As a german I appologize for the very ugly way most germans dress up and their habbit with socks in sandels. Often they dress as boring as their food tastes. As long as they behave better, than they look ...
l really like the classic retiree or expat in Pataya, Bangkok or Phuket who lives here since one maybe two years but acts like he's been around since the Khmer empire.
Love the woke warnings! Not sure how you could ever live in a western country again? You would be sent to the gallows for even thinking this video. Keep up the great videos and thank you!
@@travelswithbenny3328 That's true!! As a BM I sometimes surprise some of my white friends when I warn them to beware it's "open season on white males"
Great video. I’m new to your channel and very much regret not travelling to Thailand when I had the chance (20yrs ago). In the Uk, most of us men (especially married) get broken down over a few decades. Work and family life take turns in giving you a good kicking. Finances for most are always stretched and the minute your wife sees you having the slightest bit of fun. It’s put a stop to. Men have few friends here and I can only imagine the freedoms felt on arriving in Thailand for that new start. I’m sure if western women appreciated their men more and rewarded them (we are easily pleased), the stereotypes would be less obvious. Maybe? I like your non judgemental and informative style 👍
I have lived in Thailand in my 20 plus years in Asia. I don't drink, never been to a bar in Thailand but I love the place. From food to the beaches, mountains and jungles. Great gyms and shopping, temples on and on. Oh I never had Thai girlfriend. Those guys that never get out of the bar areas really miss out. What's fun is I look like the typical tourist and always asked what bars I go to and I ask what temples have they visited. I hate to say this but I stay away from foreigners too much trouble seems to follow them.
I ended up with a Thai GF in Bangkapi Bangkok...she was an accountant.....You can't believe what kind of people you can meet when you stay in a place with only Thais
"Those guys that never get out of the bar areas really miss out" I could also say that those guys that have never been in a gogo bar have no idea what they are missing. Beaches, mountains and jungles I can find in my home country. Beautiful, SLIM, available women not so much.
Asking couples how they met is a pretty innocent question when you first meet a friend’s partner in the states. It used to be somewhat embarrassing when they’d admit they met on a dating site/app but that stigma has def dissipated the last 10 years. However perhaps too personal if they’re strangers or acquaintances
It was strangers asking, sometimes here it's a mental contest between guys, my girl's better than yours or classier, etc etc, sizing up eachothers girls...yawn
@@BangkokPat Now I understand where you are coming from. In Australia how you met or how your parents met is an innocent question. My wife, Thai of course, loves to tell everyone how we met and fell in love because it's a good story she loves to tell.
I think there are millions way how you can meet...strangly enough I ask this question in the course of a relation to a new friend....i am somehow fascinated when two people from such different places ( thai/west) meet and try to make it...and if it was the red light so what..? ..if this works out long time...? their business non mine...
@@thethrillofpattaya8404 You ask as if I am leading on that I want to tell all. I don't and I do but have to respect the platform, in a nutshell, I met my Thai wife outside of Thailand via a local online dating app. We messaged for two days and then met, it was initial love at first sight for both of us. After four days my now wife moved in due to circumstances beyond our control. Have never been happier, we are four years in. Edit: in the local Thai community we are a model couple
My wife and I started stereotyping our own travelers from the US. Can't believe these clueless young women who come to a generally conservative Buddhist country wearing their underwear/athletic wear everywhere! Have some class 🤦🏼♂️. Saw 30 examples in the Siem Reap Airport this morning on my way to Bangkok.
The fact is these foreign women just don,t care about what the Asians think. Its all about me, me and me! Sadly their attitudes have caught on with some Thai women. Sort of like a bad virus that spreads . Seen more than a few dressed that could easily pass as street hookers or are topless on the beaches. Do as you please just don,t cry , moan and bitch afterwards when you get in trouble. Then they wonder why they get harassed by Asian men. I will never forget watching three young Swede girls not even eighteen sitting topless on the beach in Hua Hin within minutes three drunk Thai men were following them around. Just one of numerous reasons I just avoid tourist slums in general. Just embarrassing to be around many foreigners. You just never know what stunt they are going to pull next.
The entitled, narcissistic masculine western women can learn a lot from non-feminist Thai women on how to behave properly with class, style and femininity. Yobbo, bare chested, tatted up farang males also need to pull their heads in and start acting with more respect ...
I had two friends who only went to Pattaya every year they would taxi straight from Bangkok airport and back and fly home. I met one in Pattaya, he stayed in his hotel room during the day and only ate western fast food and bar hopping at night. Surprisingly he could speak and write Thai. But what got me was how much money he was spending and miserable he was. He scrimped and saved up all year to be there. Anyway, I convinced two of them one year to try Chang Mai, to see some different places. They flew to Chang Mai, jumped in a taxi, asked to be taken to the nearest brothel, had a lousy time(too expensive no variety), taxied back to the airport, flew straight back to Bangkok, and abused me for suggesting something different.
Of course, such a shallow existence doesn't make anyone happy. I feel sorry for all these old sobs who sit opposite of a 20-something girl in a restaurant, sitting there all in silence because they have nothing in common.
Pat you had me laughing with the Steven Segal picture !!! After Nico ,out for justice and hard to kill what happen to him !!!! The post cards were so funny and true. Gotta love a Stereo type makes a interesting time when in Thailand . You have got me wondering where do I fit in to them 😂😂
Very funny way to describe Farangs for sure. I watched a channel notime2besad, that his mom seemed surprised and curious as why there are so many old fat White Farangs in Pattaya. I hope her son explains to her the reason why, 😆. You are a natural, Pat, explaining things so clearly. You must be a very good and patient English teacher as well, with a good sense of humor to add. Your mother would have been proud how you have turned out. I am sorry that you have lost your mother at such a young age. I am blessed that my mother lived to be 86 years old before she went to live in that mansion in the sky in July of this year. You are doing great, Pat. Keep it up and stay safe.
This was hilarious. One Farang style is also this - A fairly young male person 20-30 years old for the first time in Thailand, and has found a girlfriend, and now he wants to move to Thailand and is looking for work as a painter, waiter or driver :D:D You see these quite often in certain Facebook groups these days.
Good video! A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Generalizations are formed from a general statement or concept obtained by inference from specific cases. Some people have set ways that they are happy with. Being closed minded by not willing to consider different ideas or opinions causing these labels from a person.
Hi Pat great video, and yes I’ve been everyone of your stereotypes, but my fifteenth years was magnificent, I survived, arrived with 100k and left with 100k +, I don’t regret a single day, plus the pure adrenaline rush lasted every single day, my abiding memories are those of the wonderful Thai relationships I formed, cannot be replaced, now I live on my memories, do I regret it, absolutely not, just remember we only live once 🙏
Love your vids Pat - and I know exactly who you mean (many times) - but especially the smug guys making heaps via their websites and always grifting stories about Thailand, and the Thai 'experts' who have never been far from Pattaya or Nana/Soi Cowboy and have no idea about Isaan or Lanna.
Great video Pat. I might drink at the wrong place but I haven't met an SAS veteran in 16 years. I'd love to listen to some war stories. I live over the bridge in Bangkok so I break that stereotype too. I'm just an ordinary bloke running a small business (just turned 50) with 2 Thai kids and a wife of over 10 years. We go to Pattaya for holidays, and I sometimes sneak down to the bars for a look. But at the end of the day, we're just a normal family doing normal shit. Its just much easier here than in my home country. You need a light globe - call the motocy guy - 5 minutes. Electrician or a plumber - same day for 10 bucks. Food or grocery delivery (and now ganja), a message away. So yeah, the nightlife may have brought me here, but now we're just livin' life as it should be. I really appreciate your videos Pat some of your older ones, like Washington Square bring back some great (and a bit crazy) memories!
Some farangs like to hint that they're well connected and have power and influence due to their Thai relatives. Usually when someone has to try and hint or boast like this the opposite is true. Kinda like the farang trying to gain face.
I don't fit .52 years old try and go twice a year to gym, walk swim at the beach .Eat great healthy food and get as many massages to help fix the body .Come home every time and feel on top of the world and everyone comments how healthy I look and turn slowly the grind of life gets me so off I go again to Phuket to do my thing .Thanks for the video .
I went to Thailand myself after going to Vietnam first with friends born there and decided I didn't want to be there for a entire month as originally planned not knowing what the country was like and I already took a month off for vacation looked into other countries nearby with good currency exchange rate so I still got the most for my money I decided on Thailand. What I saw personally was a HUGE amount of very old guys literally chasing, in most cases, for young Thai's looking like children or at least to be the Farang's grandchildren's age no matter where I went, very, very sad. I'm glad it seems to have changed. It is a beautiful country ruined almost by outside visitors going there for the wrong reasons.
Men of means and/or power have preferred and gotten young women from the beginning of time, it's people like you that can't get over the truth. Get over and go back to Utah. Oh, wait.
These scenes in between the discussions are so well shot. Bangkok Pat, you missed your calling as a film-maker. Anyway, I think your whole video is pretty good and balanced. I see you treading carefully not to offend us farangs. However, many of the stereotypes are true. And yes, we have very predictable reasons for coming to Thailand. .... It's the wonderful food of course ! 😉
@@rudolfdesadeleer7995 Thai food in America for the most part is awful . The last take out I ordered I took one bite and tossed it in the trash it was so bad. $15 USD for crap. I could of had a superior meal in Thailand for $1.

I can ditch my beer brand tank tops, lose the socks and scale back on my stories from when I was with the CIA, but do I really have to give up Pad Thai too?
Your videos have me excited to land in Bangkok this December! I’ll be entertained seeing the differences and similarities between “farang” and their China dwelling counterparts, the “laowai” I met on my last journey to Asia. Looking forward to more education on your channel 😸
Great video - presented, as always, in your cool, professional manner. I always imagined I would never become a stereotype. I was smarter than that. I was self-aware. Regrettably, and with some considerable measure of disappointment, I now realise that during my time both in Thailand and Vietnam I probably ticked every stereotypical box, plus a few more besides. I was certainly guilty of falling into the 'I must be handsome - all these lovely girls (and guys, in my case) find me so attractive!' trap. I'm sure I acted like a perfect fool - swaggering about like I was some impossibly good-looking, cocksure 20-something (I'm 59) in my inappropriate tight t-shirt and comically short shorts (clothes I'd never wear at home here in the UK). Typically, I'd swim a few lengths in the hotel's roof top pool and emerge thinking I was an irresistable physical specimen - of course my partners couldn't keep their hands off me! Idiot. Clown. Were they laughing at me? How did they really see me? Time and distance have not provided any answers. I have some good, good memories of the times, people and places. Some really fine moments, but always, behind it all, I know I probably looked and acted the fool more often than not, and I was almost certainly kidding myself about my motivations and those of my partners just about 100% of the time. I was a stereotype. Gullible, probably insensitive, sexually promiscuous, and nowhere near the best version of myself. If I didn't know it then (although I might have suspected it), I certainly do now.
I know the feeling well. I'm now 67 and almost, finally, might have grown out of it, and I can see the reality. I feel that I was a complete prat, especially when I first went there in 1979. I really thought I was 'The Man'. I now realise it was my distorted perspective that allowed me to get involved with the fantasy. I was 'educated' by older mongers who made me believe the most ridiculous things, as indeed they did. Ie. Thai girls worship us and we are like Kings to them. Very soon though, it started to go wrong and I got shat on several times. I was used and abused for money. Its only taken about 40 years for me to realise that's what happens when you deal with sex workers. What a prat. Now, I'm not sure if I wouldnt have been better of if I'd never been there. Or at least, never messed with 'the ladies of Soi 4'.
20 yrs ago when I was in my late 20 s I loved South East Asia.An observation from Thailand I experienced several times.Hotel receptionists- young females- would regularly enquire as to why I wasn’t bringing Thai girls back to my room.
And to think that when I was on pilgrimage in Thailand I've visited dozens of temples and antique sites all across Thailand's Isaan, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet... where does this put me in the stereotype's list 😊😊?? A lady in my guesthouse did ask me "why you here?!? You no drink, you no take girl in room?!?" 😊😊 God bless Thailand 🙏 thank you for the videos sir 👍🏻
After being in Thailand a few months, with some reservation I can say that some men come to Pattaya to die. Mind you, in not the worst possible way. Most though, seem to be climactic refugees from Northern Europe escaping the cold. The bars and girls mostly are a diversion to pass the time so they can get some sleep.
I really enjoyed that video Pat. I live in Australia, have a comfortable lifestyle but I would love to retire in Thailand. The main attractions for me are the lifestyle, affordability, the people and the food. Yes of course, young, very attractive women are appealing but I also feel a bit cringy when I see guys my age or older, with the physique and charm of Homer Simpson kidding themselves that they are in any way attractive and with a young girl in tow who is doing what she has to do to get by. I get it, but I don't, if that makes sense. If I ever make it over there to retire, it would be nice to contribute to the local community in some small way too. Anyhow, thanks for your channel, it provides a more detailed insight into every day life in Bangkok and your views and knowledge are appreciated.
wish it had been longer with more street/city scenes. Love to see one on "dodgy" areas that have great street life and food places as I'll be hitting Bkk Nov 2 :)
@1:53 I have been in Thailand 5 times, never taxi drivers have offered me any of those things. The only problem I had: taxi driver (s) doesn't like to run the meter. Uber is as expensive as your home town ride. This was my experience.
The cartoons were a laugh and spot on, I can relate to the one where the guy is in bed in England v Thailand. When I first went there 15 years ago I was an older backpacker and age 43, wasn't going there for the naughty nightlife. But once I'd experienced it, it became a bit like a not so good habit, and the next trip there was mostly about that and not so much about the culture. Then when I came back to my western life, where I'd already come to the conclusion that things were stacked not in my favour as a man, and now there was no way I was going back what I might be able to get as a partner in N America. That has only increased as I've got older, knowing that there is so much going on over there v a life with a women my age, who is probably going to me overweight and high on the N American feminist/ man dis-liker scale... I don't know quite what is the answer, apart from regular trips to Thailand.
Man dis-liker? You really mean man hater. More than a few of those I have encountered. I see them here in Thailand easy to spot. I don,t even bother saying hello.
insightfull mate....im guessin u been in country awhile...i dont fit into any of those stereotypes btw...my story...kinda outside the box...plenty of obstacles...but it was a good journey...33 years with my babygirl...she died end 2020...in the village...isaan...khmer...we spent the middle 12 years together in uk...no money...no kids or fam...jus us two...against the world...now i gotta find a way to start living again...no pain no gain...cheers mate...

Traveling to Thailand, for 2 weeks, next month. Making me revisit my motivations for going. I’m going to make sure I don’t come off as a 2 week millionaire. That means you’re buying me a tea on our walking tour. 😂
In general, what is it with other foreigners in Thailand when they see each other. Case in point, I was at Robinson this morning when I saw a foreigner coming head on with his girlfriend and then he saw me and gets all googly eyed staring at me as he passed but doesn't say a word. It's either that or a massive scowl comes across their face like ''I'm the only farang in the village.''
That happens when they wanna be the only farang in the area and he's mentally profiling you about your wealth, if your GF is a bargirl and whether you're a teacher. Many farangs do it to eachother in passing. Some think it's like a pissing contest
A lot of people “bog” you in Thailand which is basically where you stare at someone in public even while they’re aware that your staring at them and then to look away the moment they look around to stare back. It’s actually quite fun as you can really get inside peoples heads, just make sure you don’t actually make eye contact with them…
I had a friend who would say "gringo" in a deep, raspy voice, which was occasionally amusing. For me, I will give a "good morning" if we are in the same section of the supermarket.
My observations from my travels to Thailand and elsewhere in Asia; there is a preconceived perception of people with dark skin color. As an American, we don't see that kind of behavior much anymore, although the liberal media and corrupt politicians would have us believe bigotry is alive and well. However, it is apparent throughout Asia. Girls in Pattaya wearing skin lighting makeup to the point where they almost look ill. Everyone seems to think that light skinned people work in offices and have an education, whereas dark skinned people work the fields and are under-educated. Very sad to see this. One day, an elderly woman friend of my Thai GF grabbed my hand, looked closely at my hand and said "he's so white". On a trip to Hong Kong, we were stopped on the jetway after leaving the aircraft, not even in the airport yet, and the Chinese officials wanted to know why my dark skinned Thai GF was coming to Hong Kong. A similar incident also occurred when we traveled to Singapore. I guess you always want what you don't have. In the US, everyone wants a tan body. Not so in Asia. And yes, you are a walking ATM. You have to establish a set of ground rules and enforce them.
I am that second one. An older man that is pretty much ignored in my country but when I arrive in Thailand I get plenty of female attention from attractive younger ladies. Nothing wrong with that because it boosts self esteem and confidence even though I know that much of the attention is for alternative reasons. Another country that was exceptional for that was Cuba.
@@lolitapitpong3826 yes and it is easy to be smitten by them. Before I went to Thailand I could not understand how a man would quickly marry and submit to Thai women, where in the west this would not happen. Then I went there and within two weeks I could understand.

You are smooth as silk. Your phrasing and delivery is very professional. Excellent vlog.

Super work Pat. Really enjoyed.
"Those guys that never get out of the bar areas really miss out"
I could also say that those guys that have never been in a gogo bar have no idea what they are missing.

Hence the notices you see up in temples. Some people have no idea of where they are!
That is because they come with no understanding of the countries they visit. It is only smart to be knowledgeable about cultures other than your own.
@@christinaeaton8733 The sad truth is they don,t care.

Awesome episode once again! Hello from the Windy City!
Thanks Scott, hope all is good in Chicago my friend!

Having said all that the important question is.... DID YOU HAVE FUN?
Or they ask if you will be, probably because that hotel is used to it....

I agree, I saw some on Soi 7 in Jomtien yesterday. I thought the same thing,,,they are at the end of their lives, alone, miserable and ready to die

Hello Pat like your videos very informative and well done also like your narrative 👏 😀 also I am the 2 week millionaire Farrang

Great video, i think i fit a bit of all those groups 555.
We've all flirted between many of them at some point I reckon.
Glad to hear that Lawrence!
