  • The BMW F700GS was, well, not the most exciting motorcycle. At least that's what we think. We can't actually remember what it was like. It just wasn't a rememberable sort of ride. Is the 750 any better?

Alright, everyone is knocking this bike. Yes it is an expensive vanilla bike to some but that is exactly the reason there are dozens of other models out there. I got one and I enjoy riding it everyday.

So BMW is knocking 50K off this bike at the moment making it absolutely worthwhile to buy. For R139 000 you get insane value for money. And because I could... I added the quickshifter cause Its brilliant! Getting mine in 7days.

I have owned an f700GS for four years, bought when my much-loved R1200GS became too heavy as I approached my 70th birthday. It turned out that there was little available that was lighter, had two cylinders, and decent power. The f750GS is more towards the weight of the R1200 while the f700 is the same as my first BMW, the 100/7 which, note had a front suspension travel of 200mm and could be hustled along nicely. I bought an R80GS and have had GS's since the eighties. The f700 is the nearest BMW have ever got to that original vision. In addition to lighter weight ( though still heavier than the original R80 GS ) it has 170 mm suspension travel at both ends, a 200 mile tank range and very neutral handling. The seat height is the same. The suspension and "comfort" seat were terrible and had to be remedied. The front suspension was deemed to be the worst the specialist had ever seen. Once that was done the bike is now a joy to ride, fuel consumption dropped noticeably. I paid £5500 for it with hard luggage and all the fancy electronics inc. useful TPC.It probably has not greatly depreciated.
It can be cheaply serviced privately, which may not be the case with the newer BMWs. I see the twin cam boxers need valve adjustment every 6000 miles. No thanks. I wonder how much a replacement digital display costs to replace? It is true that the torque of the 1200 is missed, one does not love the 700 in the same way and overtaking can be harder. Finally, some tests say the 750 is top heavy, a feeling that always feels unpleasant.
And very finally, the eighty year old lady up the road likes it!

My previous bike was a 700 GS, which I traded in for my current bike, a 1250 GS. I think you might be giving the 700 a bit of a bum rap. Yes, its engine wasn’t sophisticated but, with a downshift, it could be a lot of fun. In addition, the bike was great in the twisties and, with the right tires, it handled light to medium off-road quite well. The 1250 is a fantastic machine, but I sometimes miss my light, low, nimble 700. 😀

The Chinese engine in this model is probably an improvement, but I can’t bring myself to like it !

Fantastic to see you guys as always. I was choosing between this and a Triumph Tiger 800 XRT. Honestly, it was not even close. I bought the Triumph. If for no other reason, it's bizarre that BMW doesn't put a windscreen on this style of bike. I mean, really. But otherwise, for me, the Tiger is superior is every way, except for TFT. And then there's cost of ownership, atleast here in NYC. The Triumph is very inexpensive to own, plus bigger gas tank.

  • @nigelmtb

Jesus, where would you suggest putting the tank of highly flammable gas? Seriously not an issue - it's been attached to motorbikes for decades. Maybe even longer.

Yeah, I'm not convinced twisting the crank is going to make the bike more than just competent. Your pricing in SA is strange though. The F750GS is about $15.5K AUD ride away here in Oz, whereas the KTM 790 Adventure R is $22.5K. Edit: The Triumph Tiger 800s start with the XRx for $17K ride away.

Nee dankte. For that price difference I'll keep my Honda NC 750 DCT, thank you. At least my screen gives me protection from the wind, up to where my visor sits, without buffeting and I can do 120-130km/h the whole day. If I did have that type of money to spend on a bike, I would seriously rather consider consider a Yamaha Tracer 900 (GT), or even the 1000cc versions of the Kawasaki Versys and Suzuki VStrom...

Completely miss the point. This bike weighs 224 kg.,only 5 kg less then a R1200 GS, which is/was a better machine. When the latter got too heavy for me, at 73 yrs, the F700 GS, 209 kg. s'hand, was the best choice for a sensible bike. Still happy with it after 5 years and still see no alternative on the market. Had to fix the suspension, of course. My first 1000cc. BMW was 195 kg. in 1977, so where is the progress?

y'all talking about 77 HP like it's shit coming from an engine under 800cc...a Harley with a liter more displacement, costing $5k more than this bike, makes comparable power. yea, the powerband and torque is a little different...but this engine is still cherry. Even at the Base 750 tune.

The 750 is build for the daily rider. It's tuned to run regular gas (the 850 is premium) and still have enough spunk to enjoy your ride. It compares better to the Versys than the Tenere.
You might not think burning regular is a big deal, but it's available everywhere, and it costs less, which matters when you're doing over 10,000 km a year.

And you get a pretty damn good R1200gs second hand for the same money, including some lowered versions for the ladies. So why on earth would anyone buy one I simply don’t know even at a bargain demo price? If you’re a new rider honing your craft, do buy second hand and look at something like a NC750 or MT07 for R100k less. I’m terribly sorry but I can’t with a good conscience recommend a F750 to anyone and am still baffled why it carries the “gs” name. Personally I feel that this bike is built specifically for the European police service where keeping the Euros in Europe is important if spending tax payer money.
