Thanks for reviewing Doug, it was a show I watched during the Nick ownership of it, and hadn't seen since. I always found the Doug - Patti ship to feel one-sided, which is typical for children at that age. But Roger, oh geez, that guy was nice-washed bully. The episode I specifically remember was the one where Roger was on a kids TV show and was embarrassed about it, thus providing some context for why he's a bit of a jerk.
I think Hey Arnold (1996-2004) was a bit better about the bully/weird-kid dynamic. Rugrats/All-grown-up probably had the better general appeal though (Literately, it aired from 1991 to 2008 between those two shows so it's time frame is slower than real time.) The thing with Hey Arnold and Rugrats, was that the bully was the lead girl character, but they made Helga (H-A) have an unrequited love interest in the main character where as Angelica (Rugrats) was the main character's cousin who was simply spoiled and mean in the way that relatives can be. Hey Arnold's Harold character was only briefly the bully.
Nice-washed characters are essentially bullies that only mean or jerks because of plot convenience. Actual bullies channel resentment or have quality of life issues from their living situation that is a source of their perpetual need to lash out for attention.
Kisai Yuki both cartoons were good in my opinion but my favorite cartoon when I was 7 in 1991 was rugrats and ren and stimpy also loved duckman when I was nine in 1994 until I was 13 in 1997 and bobbys world and Bucky o hare hate and the toad wars

One episode revealed Roger coming from a home with an absent dad. He stole wheelbarrows for a race because his father wasn’t around to participate with him. Was probably the closest the show got to being real about Roger, and Doug legitimately helped him out instead of simply giving him comeuppance. Gives me the warm feels.
If you want the worst one sided dynamic in a cartoon you should watch Carl Squared. Though to give the show ALL the credit it became self-aware as it went on. That and Sky could actually step up and be supportive even when it didn't meet her interests/agendas. It isn't that they don't genuinely like each other it is that 50% of the plots is "Sky wants something, I better do it for sky". It is what made me start to pay closer attention to the "Unpleasable girlfriend" tropes.
I dunno what it is but Roger was always my favorite character as a kid. He's such a jerk but in a way that I couldn't help but find him hilariously entertaining. I thought it was funny how he was a mean guy but he was still kind of in the friend group cause his assholery might not have been pushing the boundary.
It helps that the majority of the time Roger was just standoffish. You could even be forgiven for forgetting he was a bully. Heck the episode where he took Doug's diary ends with him just giving it back, though I cannot remember why (I think he couldn't read it).

You know what was deep too? Patty's pop was in a wheelchair and her mom passed. When Doug got that door knocker from her old house, I was like well done dude. Definitely my favorite show as a kid.

Man,Doug knocked down an entire house with one rock.He was da Man in that episode!But with jokes aside as a kid seeing Patties Dad in a wheelchair and Pattie remembering her mom fondly.I kind of assumed that it must of been an accident but they nevered mentioned that or maybe skeeter did mentioned an accident I can't remember.
I was always threatened with the "permanent record" thing as a kid, and sympathized with Doug's dread of it every time.

I loved watching Doug and Rugrats when my daughter was a little one. Every once in a while the Killer Tofu song pops into my head and I start singing along. Lots of fond memories of that time.

We had permanent records at my school. Or at least they mentioned them in classes and with the office staff. It’s just records of the student like what grades you’ve gotten and the health of the student from what I remember. So getting an F would go on there and affect your classes you would end up in.
Ditto. We were threatened that they could follow us beyond school, as they would allegedly affect where we could go to college and, thus, our future career paths.
My favorite Doug episode is probably the one where Doug watches a horror movie and the entire crux of the episode is Doug realizing how terrifying something we don't understand is. As a fan of horror movies, and someone that grew up terrified of all things horror, it was so easy to relate to it. And that's why I love it, I can't recall any other kid's show ever discussing how scary movies can traumatize kids.

No matter what people think about this show, it's an incontrovertible fact that Doug was one of the first Slice of Life shows that had a big influence on shows that were inspired by it. Before 1991, the year Doug debuted, there wasn't any other slice of life show in which a normal kid went through real issues. It was mostly all about action and fantasy, as well as occasional levity. Doug may seem cliche nowadays, but during its time, it was considered an unprecedented phenomenon that had a huge influence on other slice of life shows that would air right after this. Say what you want about Doug, call it bland and boring all you like, but whether you like it or not, you have to at least respect it for the inluence it had on other cartoons. Without Doug, there wouldn't be a Hey Arnold, Daria, As Told By Ginger, The Proud Family, or even a Loud House. Doug is a far more important show than what many folks nowadays give credit for. So kudos for this review.
I think Charlie Brown/Peanuts deserves more of that credit, however Doug really bought it back in the 90s at a time when cartoons became more about selling toys to kids so there you go
I think the same can be said about Ren and Stimpy and how it was the first of its kind and how it inspired many other shows with its absurd, violent, and crude humor. You can dislike Doug and Ren and Stimpy, sure, but you can't ignore the impact that they have had and they should be respected.

I saw them way back in the day on the killer tofu tour. They started the show off with I need more allowance and there was instantly moshpits. They ended the show with shout your lungs out and chap lipman threw up on stage. I think the last thing he ate was a soggy stinker.

Nickelodeon from the late 80s through the 90s was just amazing. Lightning in a bottle. Never again will a network be so endearing to an entire generation. The right people, right place, right time.

Eh that is nostalgia. Late 90s and 00s kids would say the same for cartoon network around the same time. I was an 80s baby and 90s kid so nick was god.

When mentioning "heavier" episodes of the show I recalled the one where Doug accidentally demolished Patti's old house, full of memories of her mother.
Its take on grief really stuck with me.
Psych Babble I remember the serious episodes only airing uncut and unaltered on cbs. Hell for a long time the hunted house episode only aired on cbs and the episode were Doug is home alone for the first time, only used to air in prime time!

Funny enough, Vanessa Coffey and I are separated by barely 1 person. My mom used to be good friends with her in the 90s and I got to watch a lot of these early NickToons come to life before my eyes during my childhood because of it. I was also one of the first kids to find out about the first Spongebob movie and my 9th birthday was Spongebob themed as well. Crazy times to think that I had such a weirdly close connection to such a big part of my childhood. Great work on this video btw, I really love revisiting these old toons!
I absolutely loved Doug back when I was a preteen and I still love it today at 37. There is just something unique about it.. we used to call my 8th grade teacher Doug because of his seemingly endless collections of sleeveless sweaters..
As someone who has broken a grill, I can confirm that Doug is too relatable for this world.

I really like Doug. The character was relatable to me as a kid because I too was bland, boring, unpopular, and anxious about literally everything.
I don't think the show is bland, though, even if the lead character is. The art style is really unique and has a great charm to it, and the acapella sound/music direction gives it a very distinctive personality. One thing I really love about the old Nicktoons is how diverse they were on an aesthetic and tonal level. So many modern cartoons are really similar to one another by comparison. Nick needed a more down-to-Earth show like this to balance the complete absurdity that was Ren & Stimpy et al, imo.

I really liked Nick because they portrayed characters that were weird looking or dorky or "not cool". like they were saying "it's okay to be different"

In my grade school, someone started singing the Doug theme song in French class, and as each new section was introduced, more kids joined in: singing harmonies, banging on the desks, making guitar sounds. We actually got through the entire song. Our French teacher was utterly confused and a little scared by the end of it.

They don't really exist outside of doctors forms and stuff that your parents have signed. It's a common trope however, and I dunno how anyone who actually watched the Simpsons could not know about it since Bart gets his delinquency added to his all the time.
To be fair, the whole "permanent record" thing was a real scare tactic used in the 1960's to make rebellious children behave. My dad really was told as a kid that if he acted up in class he'd be put on the "permanent record" and never be able to go to college or get a job. As messed up as that is, that was nowhere near as messed up as when spanking was allowed in public schools for punishment, which has thankfully been removed.
I was born in 1990 and I remember the first day of kindergarten, when we were filed into the principal's office and she'd give us a stern warning about the possibility of a paddlin'. I just remember her showing us the paddle and explaining the process. All they needed was consent from the parents.

So I live in Germany and watched Doug as a child but I never met another person my age or even a little bit older that saw Doug. Kinda sad, I think. It was a cool show and the Intro song will forever play in my mind when I hear the name Doug. I’m just really glad I found your video :)

In theory. Though simply randomizing skin color palettes doesn't equal "colorblindness". It's about racial coding, it doesn't matter what color characters are if they are still coded as "white". Have you ever heard anyone argue that The Simpsons centers around a black family? If you did there is a reason that would sound absurd. To be fair, the racial coding in Doug made more of an effort to be ambiguous (e.g. Skeeters parents, and the Dinks). As a side note, as a half black/half white kid, my child brain absolutely made note of the fact that Doug's love interest was the only other white girl available to him. So diversity isn't just about the prevalence of different skin colors, and you didn't have to be a jaded 30-year-old like I am now, to pick up on that.
My favorite Doug episode is where some guy picks a fight with him and Doug does a 1-hit KO lol The episode just keeps getting funnier (^_^)

I like Doug. It might be a little mundane compared to its contemporaries but it's not a bad show and it's _still_ a strange Nickelodeon cartoon - just a little more laidback and low-key.
Considering Nostalgia Critic and a certain gag from the early years of Channel Awesome, I can see why HE was shellshocked by the doodle's character if he's described as "Painfully Average"
Well it did fall into the category of animation known as slice of life so it would make sense that it wasn't as over the top as its fellow nicktoons.

In my 1st year as a teacher, I was literally shocked to find out that permanent records are real. I never get to touch them until the end of the year, where we shove the kid's final report card in them before we get to leave for the summer, but they exist in some file cabinet. Mr. Bone is the only person I've ever seen refer to them ever.
Now I'm binge watching Doug for the first time in two decades. HOW DID I GET INTO THIS MESS?

This show was never "silly." Doug dealt with real problems. It is as relevant today as ever because it's real problems humans have. It was never predictable. Sometimes funny but always interesting. There wasn't an oversaturation of colors and they're just people. Race is skin deep and Doug showed that. Most animated shows in the 90s were creative and excellent.
Yeah, Doug was more of an animated sitcom than a cartoon. It’s like King of the Hill, outlandish things might happen but everything is still grounded in reality unlike Ren & Stimpy or The Simpsons.

I find "As Told By Ginger" to be a (sometimes dark) Nicktoon that gets even more underrated. I tell you, Doug is the first reason why I started eating beets (a vegetable that my family didn't eat growing up because my parents didn't like them). Now, a little piece of nostalgic memory says, "It's nature's candy, dontcha know?" when I eat them.
Actually, I was well aware of James Bond and Indiana Jones thanks to "Muppet Babies," and while Columbo was a character I wouldn't encounter until many years later, I was familiar with his schtick from the parody character Colambo on "Sesame Street." The early 90s were a great time for catching up with the zeitgeist through osmosis via kids media.

I am 40 and our principal in elementary school use to threaten us with marks on our permanent record frequently. I mentioned it to my dad and he said that nobody would ever care about anything I did in 4th grade. Important life lesson, there.
"Beetlejuice" would be a very different movie if Lydia said "I myself am bland and boring."

Let's see thumbs up for the kids who saw the cartoon show before the actual movie.
As I get older, I’m really starting to appreciate this show even more so than Hey Arnold and Ren and Stimpy. I really like the fact that the stories are actually plotted out, whereas later slice of life shows are maybe too free-form. A lot of the conflicts just arise out of Doug’s own very common anxieties. It’s not as interesting as a Pigeon Man, but in retrospect, it’s a lot closer to the lives of the audience, even those not living in suburbia. Also, the show has just enough parody, and never dips into cynicism, something I definitely appreciate more now. I’d love to see renewed interest in these old Nick shows, especially Doug. I think that with a good budget, they could make a really fun ‘animal crossing’ type game in Bluffington or the Hey Arnold Universe.
The changes with Connie always rubbed me the wrong way... It wasn't just that they changed her body type, her personality changed so much that she might as well be a different character...
If you watch the movie (which I...don't really recommend but I won't stop ya), you'll also notice they slimmed down Tippy Dink as well. The women in the series seemed to have gotten what i call the "Disney makeover."

I always thought Connie was a great character in Nick's Doug, the funny thing is she was had some interesting added story development with her depiction on Disney's Doug (with her being interested in singing, I believe) but I really WISH they kept her chubbiness. It wasn't like Nick era Connie looked unhealthy, she just looked like a girl with a more full bodytype. Disney Connie without the unique appearance seemed like a new character to me oddly enough.
Didn't they even have a moment in one of the Nickelodeon episodes where several characters are trying to cheer Doug up by acknowledging diversity in body types? I remember Connie saying, "and I'm stout!" Seems like the people who took over for Disney really missed the mark on this show.

Doug is one of my faves. I love weird water color backgrounds and was once obsessed with drawing their sneakers. So many things about the design of the show are so damn good. I always make people watch the lucky cap episode because the music in it is awesome.

I honestly can't see how anyone doesn't. The only real unique aspect of the show were the daydreams, and while the contemporary definition of the word was not yet around, I could feel the cringe from them. I mean, come on--Patty Mayonnaise is so white the creators mocked her for it with her name.

Even the daydreams in the show were underwhelming. As a kid I loved everything and even I thought this show was pretty bland. Still, I loved that theme song.
Doug was always the most interesting of the SNICK lineup. Really mellow jazzy vibe to it. It’s like a poetic daydream.
Palette cleanser is probably the best description for this show I’ve ever heard. One of my favorite episodes was the Halloween special where Doug and Skeeter are stuck in an amusement park and scare the crap out of Roger and his gang.
As a teacher I can say that yes, 'permanent records' ARE in fact a thing. They keep track of a student's accolades, awards, written warnings, detentions, suspensions, etc. They're typically started in Grade 6 and follow the student through to graduation and are basically a means to keep track of a students achievements, strength, weaknesses, growth and so on and are used by faculty from anything from extracurricular eligibility, scholarship application or even trust in terms of a lack of attendance.
Maybe now. They weren't then, beyond standardized test scores, attendance, and probably major incidents of misbehavior. If I did have one, it was never revealed to me, my teachers, or my parents; no one ever knew what it said, it was never referenced, and it certainly wasn't brought to our attention when we were applying for scholarships and could have used such info. My teachers, in fact, clearly never had any idea about their students' history (and I went to a nice district) or strengths, weaknesses, etc.

While I can't speak for the US., Commonwealth Nations (Canada, UK, Australia, etc.) all have a "Permanent Record" System that isn't merely something held by the School itself, but instead handled via the Education Board.
Now this doesn't actually begin until Secondary School (i.e. Age 11 and up)., but in essence tracks a Students Progress; their Achievements, Demerits, Detentions, Expulsions, Medical Records, Special Education Needs, Police Records, etc.
Each might appear as individual Records., they're actually all part of a Central Permanent Record File... something that began as I understand in the 50s., as a result of creeping power from the Government following their unwillingness to step-down from Wartime Control. It's where the whole "Big Brother" phenomenon stems from, and in a way is something I agree has greatly over-reached (especially in the past Generation)., but the flipside is that really that's more a case of there being no protections in place to prevent such... on the surface the concept isn't a bad one and does allow us generally speaking to never really worry about the Logistics of Modern Life.
i.e. Changing Schools is typically a formality of Registering Interest for Placement., rather than filling out insane amounts of Forms, Interviews, etc.
Some Schools might have an aptitude Test, but that's about it; if there's a placement free, they don't even have to "Request" the Records., instead they're just transferred in terms of which School has access to amend and expand... this is especially true since most systems were Digitised during the 80s.
It's a double edged sword mind., as while it makes everyone' lives easier and reduces the need for Administration … at the same time the potential for abuse (as is the current case., see: Snoopers Charter) becomes exceptionally high., especially as it'll go unnoticed by the majority who never need to interact with such; so you never see how the system has slowly changed over the years.
The idea itself is perfectly reasonable, it just need better protections for the Individuals; plus the mitigation of fiscal abuse.

I vaguely remember the last episode where Bad Bird becomes Good Bird, and decides to go to work at the PIzza Cats' place. Along with the crime boss having a literal explosive temper, that's all I remember about the show anymore. Do remember loving it as a kid though :D
My mom says I loved it as a wee tot, but I don't remember watching it on TV. I looked it up and watched some episodes with my roommate a couple years ago, and we had a blast with how crazy and farcical it was! The way they clearly just made up a whole new story and dialogue to dub over this Japanese cartoon was great. Our favorite part is the guy doing a Paul Lynde impression in the intro sequence, sounding like he recorded it while he was drunk as piss.
SPC was awesome.

Being threatened with something going on your permanent record was a thing when/where I was growing up. It was in a lot of shows, I’m surprised when ppl say they never heard of it.
When I look back on the series, I thought of it as somewhat bland, but there were also hugely nostalgic moments such as the episode with Patty and the ketchup packet. I think the best comparison would be an animated version of the Wonder Years with a little more sugar-coating
I rewatched Doug a few years back on Hulu. Loved it as much as I did when I was young. Not boring at all
If you're doing old Nick shows you should do "The Adventures Pete and Pete" or "Are you Afraid of the Dark" or even a SNICK retrospective.

Yep permanent records are a thing! In my school we got them to take home when we graduated it had copies of our report cards I never got in trouble so idk if they have those on file
As a kid I loved when Doug screamed, there’s something about it that’s funny as hell.
I was never the biggest fan of Dough but I loved seeing Connie, a larger character whose appearance didn't effect her ability to make friends/be happy. The weight loss thing was BS. Thank you for bringing it up.

DOUG was definitely my favorite NickToon from way back when. But when I look back at it now with my own pre-teen years long past, I feel like there's a darker, more nihilistic side to the show, whether intentional or not. Doug often imagines himself as the hero or otherwise the center of attention (i.e. ultlra-loser) and this is pretty common at that age. I know I had my fantasies like these. Like you said, whether by accident or Doug "learning something" he usually came out on the right side of his sticky situations. But when I look back at it, something darker peeks through - it's the fact that Doug usually ends up alright because no one even really notices him enough to go to any great lengths to ridicule or ruin him. He's not just "average," he's nigh invisible, and there's a lack of self-awareness on his part as to how insignificant he really is that makes it even sadder.
When you think about it, his "friends" (BeBe, Chalky, Connie, etc.) feel more like a loose group of acquaintances who are probably closer to each other than they are Doug. Skeeter is the only one that really shines through as an actual friends, but it's easy to see that Skeeter is more outgoing and sociable. We don't ever see it explicitly, but I'm pretty sure Skeeter was the type to stay busier than Doug and probably had to refuse Doug's company regularly for the company of other friends.
*I guess* Patty liked Doug back but I think it's obvious that her affections were perhaps only slightly outside of the friendzone (if at all) and not anywhere near Doug's full-blown infatuation. Again, this reads as sweet and juvenile in a certain context, but when I start comparing it to similar experiences in my own pre-teen years it simply strikes me as more sad and delusional than anything.
Doug was kind of a nobody. I guess you can say that being average at that age is precisely that - being a nobody - but it bothers me that he was never really written as the master of his own fate. Things happened to Doug; Doug didn't make things happen...not often anyway. Is this what being an 11 year old is like? I guess...I know I had a couple of dodgy years around that time, stuck between child-like impulses and yet driven by a need to see more, do more, and develop some autonomy. I wish there had been something exceptional about Doug that we could imagine growing and maturing into something better.
The Nick version of Doug was more relatable, the Disney version felt too lame, it was just generic and lacked the appeal.

I loved Doug as a kid for similar reasons, pretty much. Nickelodeon was ALL about gross-out humor (we all still remember Gak, right?) and so many of the shows reflected it, while Doug was on the calmer end of things. As far as the cartoons I watched some Rugrats and KaBlam! when I could though it was always on a little after my bedtime. Nothing really resonated with me quite like Doug so it was cool to watch this retrospective. Even not having seen the show in decades I very clearly remembered a lot of the clips you showed here. And I enjoyed your commentary! Great work!

This series had my favorite music of the early nicktoons. It was like a warm blanket.
Man we had the 'permanent record' threat thrown around SO MUCH, mostly in elementary school. I defended myself from my bully once, we both got dragged into the office of course and the one thing I can remember besides them asking who started the fight was them threatening to put it on our permanent records. The concept as a whole started to fade away in jr. high (7-9) and then by the time I hit high school, none of my teachers or the staff at the school said anything about it! It was so bizarre considering how much emphasis the elementary and even jr high school teachers would put on it. Like, if you got something bad on your permanent record, that's it, your life is ruined, no college, no good job, no success, lol. What a weird time the early 90s was!
A fellow fan. I catch the episodes on occasion. It reminds me of my childhood. I still watch the holiday specials every year--Halloween and Christmas special.
I loved Doug back then and today at nearly 50 I still love Doug!

In East Tennessee, permanent records were a thing. When I graduated high school, they gave me a packet of everything that followed me from kindergarten to senior year. It's been a long time since I've looked at it, but I think it had all my report cards, medical records, etc. I feel like teachers here and there when I was younger would sort of use the permanant record as a threat to keep us in line, but not anything like in the show.

I remember the "permanent record" from my childhood. Every adult in a school setting gave kids that speech in my life.
The stage show was indeed weird, but my dad got to perform on stage as one of the Beets and that was one of the highlights of the trip to Disney World for me and we all had a lot of fun so, at least to me, I think it was pretty cool.
People that find Doug "bland and boring" mostly only appreciate action and/or shock value, and not subtlety.

I can't help but always think of Disney's 'Pepper Ann' whenever somebody brings up 'Doug'; I'm curious how you'd compare the two, seeing as they're often considered gender-swapped doppelgangers by some. I'm going off of my own memories from 20+ years ago here, but I thought 'Pepper Ann' was closer in tone and premise to 'Doug' than 'Hey Arnold!' was, though I do remember liking 'Doug' the least of the three as a kid, for most of the reasons which have been discussed.

I didn’t pay attention to Pepper Ann until i got to like, 11th grade and started smoking weed lol. I feel like had I found that show when I was in middle school I would have been instantly hooked lol. That show felt incredibly relatable to a lot of older kids that i knew in high school lol

Probably the only time Nickelodeon screwed up is when they let this show go. I think the investment they refused to make would’ve been well worth it. Instead they lost it to financial juggernaut who can afford to make foolish changes and it showed.
Also shows that when it comes to originality and zaniness, Nickelodeon is far more superior than Disney.
