Yes. I think respect in ingrained in the fight culture over in Thailand. The sport sells because it's so popular. There's no need for fighters to engage in WWE antics to sell fights.

Martial artists tend to be more nerdy than fighters in my opinion. I don't mean that as an insult. But martial artists are always looking to learn new techniques, try and mix weird styles, thinking about movements, etc. Fighters want to drill the tools they need to beat the next guy. There's nothing wrong with either approach. I think of it like a musician. There's some musicians who want to learn lots of different instruments and styles. They might never master any one of them. But the learning is the passion. Then there's professional musicians, who master their instrument and style so they can successfully perform.
I love these points. The biggest thing about being a martial artist is being humble, for constructive criticism and during combat/sparring sessions. Very nicely said and I always appreciate these videos
I am totally with you on this Coach. There are many fighters in combat sports, but the true martial artists are few and far between. One of the reasons I really like the style and personality of the UFC Champ Jiří Procházka. 💥
Being gracious in victory is such a power move to me. It oozes confidence I feel. Even if I beat someone in a board game I try to act like I've been there before 😂
This is why I like fighters/martial artists like you and Demitrious Johnson @Gabriel Varga. You guys and people like GSP and Machida are why I got back into training and keep getting back in the gym.

This is always a good question i like to ask others in the gym. Usually i get ppl who say they are “athletes” and “fighters” over martial artists. Thanks Gabriel!
Yes, I think in the end it comes down to this: You are still a martial artist when you leave the ring/dojo/etc. You should not behave differently (i. e. less respectfully) towards anyone outside than inside. You life your art, you don't just practise it a couple of times a week.
I'm slowly working toward training to be a fighter instead of just a martial artist. Though competition might not be in the cards for me due to chronic injuries and physiology/anatomy quirks. One needs to recognize the difference between constructive criticism by someone you respect and can accept criticism from, and just derogatory criticism by someone you think neither knows enough to give informed criticism nor is there any respect in either direction between you two. My footwork got critiqued by Gregg at Unlimited the other day due to being inconsistent with my feet stepping distances and the stance they end up in, so now that's all that's on my mind. I have an agility ladder on the way and will be spending time working on it outside of lessons.
Thank you for making this video, these are the teachings of our martial arts school, which my children and I, have been attending for over 10 years. Now as they are coming into their teenage years Im so proud of there of the adults they are turning into. These are life lessons, that will serve them well.
New subscriber here. I've watched 3 so far, but this video is the one I believe most people should watch FIRST. I can't think of too much (anything really) that should be taught first. Edit: ...not saying your viewers don't know this already *proceeds to pull foot out of mouth*. This is about the same distinction I make between Martial Arts and Martial Sports. Now I have a video that I can reference that concisely depicts the differences. Thank you!
The first time i saw someone as a true martial artist was with Andy Hug. The man lives and breathes martial art. From the day he enter a dojo to the day he died, he showcased a heart of a warrior.
I self only train to evolve my body and mind really and philosophy is 50% for me :) "need to be like a river at night where moons shines and everywhere you look i be there..
This can be a really tough challenge for coaches to teach. On one side you want to make your students strong and dangerous and on the other side they should learn when it´s time to stop and be humble and being grateful for the fight and the experience you will share with your opponent during the fight.
Love these videos, Gabriel! Keep up the good work, but remember that it's okay to slow down your production a little so you don't burn out your creativity. TH-cam, as you may know, involves something like creative stamina. You don't want to burn out all of your video ideas too quick. Aside from that, always great hearing your input on martial arts and fighting wherever I see you.
I would say that there are plenty of ufc fighters that would like to just be nice and friendly before the fight but the reality is animosity sells these ppvs. You can see it in 95% of fighters bury the hatchet and are gracious after the fact. Even Izzy did his celebration and everything but still was very nice to Alex in the back.
Yup, all true. Sometimes i think you're Dutch also, cos you're direct and humble as well lol. This is the way a martial artist should conduct himself, and where i train, you have to, or you're not welcome anymore.
Agreed 💯 But I also have to add that there are martial artists that aren't interested in being professional fighters. I put my self in this category. I am also a sports professor. Yes I acknowledge that sparing and amateur fights are good for improving, wich I did do. But I just don't agree with many things about being a professional fighter. You Gab are truly one of the few that do things the way I would. But still too many things I don't like. But the martial art it self I truly love from my heart.
Hello Gabriel, not a comment but a request for future video. How would you train your left hand in order to be more quick & responsive. Often I see if I 'free' my left during a exchange I have a clean nice shot but most of time this left doesn't fire it's like I don't trust my left, kind of a blocade. Thx and stay in shape!
Hi gab, can you do what makes Manny Pacquiao so good? It's just fascinating to see pacman broke alot of "boxing rules" but makes them work, thank you:))
Kudos to Mr. Varga for pointing the obvious - McGregor and respect sounds like a donkey and the universe in the same sentence. I received a lot of hate from my country`s best fighters for pointing out that.
Great video as always, thanks! By the way, I am curious what do you think about Aikido? I don't want to start a discussion if it is useful or not, I am just curious what a great martial artists who can use their head just as good as their muscles honestly thinks about it.
Aikido is fine, it has some interesting aspects (Like foot work and distance management) and if you like practicing it do it. I have a varied background and after some injuries I went to aikido because I understood it was less physical than BJJ or kickboxing, like I was used to training. That and I like the philosofical aspects. The truth is it was a great workout, I had fun especially with the bokken. I even got my own and still train with it in my spare time. My only issue, and what made me drop out once I got better from my injuries and get back to my staple styles, was that the practitioners there seemed to be under the impression that Aikido was a fighting style. They were hostile and overly confident about it. It is not, it's a martial art, but the training is very heavily based on compliance, anyone fighting you off won't give you a chance to pull almost any of it off. As long as you are realistic about what you are doing it is fine. Just don't go thinking you can take a BJJ guy and wrist lock him, or that you'd be able to defend yourself from a boxer or kickboxer. You'd likely fare better than a layperson, sure. Also take into account that agueing for harder more realistic styles is also kinda stupid. Those scenarios are so far fetched in modern society that those that are training the heavy styles because they really think they are going to protect themselves from physical altercations or robberies or muggings, they are only a little less dumb than those guys that think if they train traditional styles long enough they can move stuff with their minds and shoot fireballs out their fists. Just know why you are training and look for whatever fits you best, don't worry much about other's criticisms. If you are getting off your ass and doing something good for you.
When Gabriel and his brothers were young they used to train 4 times a week at martial arts and kickboxing where we taught - but I also sent them out of house to train either in Jui Jitsu or Aikido. As you know, I was a Senpai at 15, teaching Matsubayashi Ryu. I am a Martial Artist and I try to follow the tenet's of Karate, self defense only, respect, ect ect.. But I also grew up in a rough area and started fighting even younger. So I consider myself a Street Fighter first because I am a knuckle head that will F someone up if they cross lines like hit a girl in front of me, disrespecting people with disabilities or being rude to my momma.. 37 years of training and fighting and I'm always looking to learn new things and push my limits. If someone see's i'm doing something they think is wrong, they should ask me if it's intentional cause Matsubayashi Ryu does not snap our heads quickly during our Kata's.. It's not a mistake and when 30 black belts from other styles keep saying, "Your doing it wrong," it gets really frustrating to tell them that Master Nagamine didn't want people doing that. He wanted it set a steady pace and our head moves with our body, not before.
I think it would be more interesting if your premise were reversed. Identifying the attributes that make a martial artist a fighter is far more compelling. All fighters are martial artists but not all martial artists are fighters. George Dillman, Steven Seagal, Jackie Chan, and Master Wong are examples of martial artists with very little functional empty-hand fighting ability. At the end of the day martial arts are about fighting, not putting on a show. Let's give thanks and praise to those who do the former...

1. Gracious when win and lose
2. Self motivated
3. Respect opponent
4. Take criticism
The opposite is also true, there are many martial artists who are not fighters, even though they may think so.
