  • DIY: How to replace the Clutch on a Yamaha YZF-R6
    03 - 05 R6
    06 - 09 R6s
    Done with OEM Parts (same procedure with aftermarket parts)
    - (6) Friction Plates: 4FN-16321-00-00 (red color reference tab)
    - (2) Friction Plates: 5SL-16321-00-00 (purple color reference tab)
    - (7) Pressure Plates: 3J2-16324-00-00
    - (1) Pressure Plate: 168-16324-00-00 (thicker than the other 6)
    - (6) Clutch Springs: 90501-237L0-00
    - Clutch Cover Gasket: 5SL-15461-01-00
    Torque reference:
    -Pressure Plate Bolts 10mm: 5.8 ft.lbs (8 Nm)
    -Clutch Cover Bolts & Cable Bracket Bolts 5mm Hex: 8.7 ft.lbs (12 Nm)
    ***Important notes***
    -Soak the Friction Plates in Fresh Oil for at least a half hour before installing them.
    -Do not remove the coolant hose unless you plan on draining the coolant prior.
    -Clean off old gasket material (use a razor blade if needed)
    -Line the Dot on the pressure plate up with the small Dot on the Clutch Basket
    -Arrow on the Clutch Cover (above the shaft arm) should line up with the marking on the arm when the arm is pushed forward by hand (until it stops).
    -Some people say you need to drain the oil. Oil was not drained before this install, if the bike has been sitting for a day or 2 it should not make a mess of oil.
    Video does not include how to remove/install the Lower Left Fairing (if you can't manage that on your own you shouldn't attempt to do this work)
    Disclaimer: I assume no responsibility for you performing this work on your motorcycle.

    I like to lay my bike on its side sliders (gently) and on empty tank. Gravity helps and it’s a lot less messy when installing clutch plates. Great video!

    Do you have to leave the bike in natural or leave it in first gear to change the clutch kit? Thanks

    can you please tell what spring did u use on the rear brake lever for it to return back faster. i have a problem that it retracts very slow now, and this spring would help greatly. by any chance i can buy it somewhere and install just like you did?

    Thanks for posting! little addition: I think you're supposed to remove and install the cover bolts in a criss cross pattern.

    Sorry, in la yamaha R6 2008, should the metal disc also be placed first and then the friction disc?

    Hello, I would like to know if the clamp that surrounds the clutch bell should move, have a little pride because the one on my motorcycle has a lot of play and sounds a lot and I think it could be that it moves a lot. R6 2005

    What's the torque settings or general tightness of the clutch spring bolts though? They will tighten down as much as the spring is compressing. When do you know to stop?

    Great video. But a step that was missed: bottom right bolt on clutch cover requires yamaha bond on it. You can identify this bolt by the arrow pointing to it on the clutch cover.

    I might be color blind, I don't see my purple disks at all :) all looks the same.. and when I install clutch cover and attach the cable there is no force in the clutch cable, I mean nothing happens when i press the clutch, the clutch cable doesn't perform it's job.

    Who in the name disliked the video?? Perhaps give a reason why so perhaps the author can correct if necessary in order to improve/accommodate... loser...
    I for one appreciate it as it gives me an idea of what to look for even tho I have a 2010 R6 at least I have brains to view my manual for plate installment order. This is a great guide. Can you make a video on how to replace and adjust a new clutch cable, show how to adjust the play on the clutch lever and be as specific as possible for us newbs?

      Had a couple questions, do you soak the clutch plates in oil for a 2007 not sure I've seen a couple different videos that said different things

    • @chaoticend27
      @chaoticend27 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vance Place from what I’ve read and seen you can either 1: soak them over night or 2: soak them for about 30mins. Look at it this way. As soon as you refill the oil case the clutch plates will be soaking in there already. I soaked mine for 1-2 hours if that makes you feel more at ease. 🙌🏼

      @@ju190 hi in the service manual it said to only soak the friction plates in engine oil
      I’m a little confused
      Do you soak all the clutch plates and the friction plate or only the friction plates
      I know when u put oil in it will soak all in oil anyway
      And do I know why u soak them in oil before installing them ?

      Did you ever figure this out Also bought EBC SRK kit and no (Markings)

    • @chaoticend27
      @chaoticend27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kandoyzf1654 so I did find out how. The way EBC designed them is to just simply go steel plate then friction plate and so forth. There isn’t a color coordinated way. It’s literally as simple as this video. The last friction plate however should be inserted one tooth over if that makes sense.

    • @chaoticend27
      @chaoticend27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kandoyzf1654 I do remember them having notches to help with the install

    • @chaoticend27
      @chaoticend27 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kandoyzf1654 also make sure you install pressure plate first. This says first is thicker pressure plate. But EBC doesn’t have that. They literally made the install easy so none of the pressure plates should be thicker than the others. Still doesn’t hurt to check which one is thicker. On mine, neither pressure plate was thicker. All I did was go pressure plate then friction plate and so on. The last friction plate should be installed with one tooth over. Follow the notches on the plates.

    • @chaoticend27
      @chaoticend27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kandoyzf1654 keep an eye out on how you removed the old clutch kit so you reverse the install with the new kit. That’s what’s important. Look up on TH-cam “EBC Brakes Carbon Fiber Clutch Install Honda CRF250R” for more details good luck! It’s easy install

    I wonder if the Barnett Clutch plates are better than OEM?

    • @tredogzs
      @tredogzs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      100% they are NOT. OEM clutch plates are absolutely the BEST especially for racing. What they are is cheaper.

  • @blink4art
    @blink4art 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I know it's about 3 years old this video, but you should align the dots of the clutch boss and pressure plate housing.
    And the last friction plate must be rotated one step.

  • @nickdemsey7188

    What about the clutch filter? All the old clutch material finds its way to the clutch filter which your suppose to clean up or chance starving your engine of oil.
