Apart from lance they were equipped with Hussar Sabre which was a modified version of Hungarian sabre, it included thumb ring which allowed better transition of force during the slash also sharp false edge on the tip which allowed cutting with otherwise blunt side of weapon. They were also equipped with pistols and a stabbing longsword called 'Koncerz'. After the lance broke depending on the situation they would use either sabre or sword and pistols in an emergency. Worth noting are the horses which were bred especially for the Hussars, not only were they armoured but they could do a 180 degree turn in a much smaller space than regular horses. Also should a horse receive a fatal wound that didn't kill it in an instant. It was trained to take their rider several meters away from the battle before collapsing giving them time to regroup.
The lance- "kopia"- was about 4 to 6 meters long and hollow inside, with a balanced weight and relatively light (about 14kg). When the lance was broken there was a somewhat similar metal weapon- "koncerz". It was about 150-180cm long, looking like a cross between a sword and a lance; made for stabbing only. Ofc there was a saber and 2 pistols. There were buck-up lances in the supply wagons, and the knights usually had buck-up horses.
I am a simple man.. I see a good Sabaton reaction- I like! As a huge military history buff myself, I loved your explanations and the history behind every Sabaton song. I've been to the "Heeresgeschichtliches Museum" or "HGM" in Vienna,where they have a great display of the siege and some impressive relics. I read,this usually is not your type of music, so kudos to you,for appreciating it. Maybe a little late but the wings were on hussars for a simple reason, to prevent a rider being pulled of the horse. A little historical background on the evolution of this formation is who were they mainly fighting against, the tatars, who used someting called an arkan (with was a basicly a lasso) to drag the opponents of horse. Wings were put on the back of the rider as s countermeasure, if an arkan was trown it would capter the wings that were towering above the rider, thus leaving a rider still on, to carry on fighting. You can see that even in the shape of the frame for wings- the hook facing forward, above the horsemans head, not the other way, to prevent arkan capturing a rider by the head. The myth of intimidation come later, as the hussars were so effective in batlle that many times opponents were rather to just run away,when seeing the wings, then engage in batlle. If im not mistaken hussars have never lost a battle in 126y of existence, reputation well earned then .
Some of the video fragments are from movie "Ogniem i Mieczem" ("By fire and sword"?). It's not mentioned in original video. Those fragments are just few and short, but not from the movie about Vienna siege. Good thing is "Ogniem i Mieczem" is also with hussars; chronologicaly in Chmielnicki Revolt on Ukraine. Romantic story about Polish knight and Kozak noble both falling in love with the same noble maiden. Kozak kidnaps the maiden, knight tries to get her back. War is around.
standing against a cavalry charge in that time,.. must have been terrifying... forget th HUGE size of the charge.. even if it just were a few hundred instead of 18000... seeing fully armored knights with lances lowered charging you and you have to hope and pray your spearwall will hold....

There are surnames in Polish which can be a challenge to pronounce to foreigners, but this one, I think, is one of the more managable.
Polish cavalery and infrantry together with cavlery of Holy Empire was late as they were climbing Calenberg. The rest of Holy League forces were not so they could get there faster. There were no roads on Kalemberg so getting army with cannons there was a very big and slow process.

The sultan actually didnt plan to attack vienna and it was more of a spontaneous move of Mustafa pascha(who was later executed). From the two songs so far I enjoy them. Not necessarily a musical genre I usually check out as I'm more of a fan of Jazz and typically older styles of music - however I enjoy the sounds of the two songs thus far, the chorus' are catchy and anything that helps get people interested in historical events are great! My ancestors were Winged Hussars. My family were aristocrats, but after the War they lost this title until a few years ago. The swords were a family heritage. Past down father to son. My cousin, who is custodian of our family castle, who managed to hide the Roll of Honour from the Communists. Until liberation.

Although all of the possibilities you bring up are possible, one use for the wings most historians accept is that they were back guards. Opponents would often fight side to side and swing their sword back towards the back of the opponent. The wings blunted those types of attacks.

The defenses of Vienna in 1529 weren’t that particularly good, back then the city was protected by a medieval wall that was several centuries old and outdated. Luckily for the defenders the Ottomans didn’t manage to bring heavy cannons and thus the Ottomans had to resort to mines to destroy the city walls. The Ottomans managed to create several breaches, but the Landsknechts and other defenders killed everyone who tried to get through the breaches. The defenders built palisades and trenches to close breaches. Whereas in 1683 the city was protected by for the time modern fortifications with bastions etc. that had only been finished modernizations in 1672.
Hussars had no problems with western armies, they have beaten Swedes and Roman |Empire every time they have seen them in battle. So no in that time they were not outmatched by western tactics, And actually the best infrantry of that time and best artillery was fielded by Ottomans not Habsburgs,,,,

The holy league offical name was "The Holy Roman Empire". Both the Ottaman's and the Polish did read Tolkien as both sides did take inspiration from the Battle of Helms deep (I know it is the other way around).

Poland lost the Battle of Warsaw against a smaller army of Sweden and Brandenburg (all in all maybe 18.000 soldiers) in 1656.
