======= "Winged Hussars" SONG STORY =======
During the siege of Vienna in 1683, the situation for the citizens and the small defending force was desperate.
140 000 soldiers of the Ottoman Empire was slowly but surely tearing the cities defences apart by digging a tunnel under the moat and city walls.
The plan was to detonate a series of mines under the wall to make it collapse and use the rubble as a walkway into the city itself.
It was truly a race against time since nobody knew if the christian coalition called ”The Holy League”, under the command of the Polish king John III Sobieski would make it in time.
They managed to arrive just in time to save Vienna, and the most fearsome of the warriors among them were the Winged Hussars!
    ======= "Winged Hussars" LYRICS =======
    When the winged hussars arrived
A cry for help in time of need, await relief from holy league
60 days of siege, outnumbered and weak
Sent a message to the sky, wounded soldiers left to die
Will they hold the wall or will the city fall
    Dedication
    Dedication
    They’re outnumbered 15 to one
    And the battle´s begun
    Then the winged hussars arrived
    Coming down the mountainside
    Then the winged hussars arrived
Coming down they turned the tide
As the days are passing by and as the dead are piling high
    No escape and no salvation
Trenches to explosive halls are buried deep beneath the walls
Plant the charges there and watch the city fear
    Desperation
    Desperation
It’s a desperate race against the mine
    And a race against time
Cannonballs are coming down from the sky
Janissaries are you ready to die?
We will seek our vengeance eye for an eye
You’ll be stopped upon the steps of our gate
On this field you’re only facing our hate
But back home the Sultan’s sealing your fate
    We remember
    In September
That’s the night Vienna was freed
    We made the enemy bleed!
    Stormclouds, fire and steel
Death from above make their enemy kneel
    Shining armour and wings
Death from above, it’s an army of kings
    We remember
    In September
    When the winged hussars arrived

The siege begun 14th of July Austrian and Germans have been fighting a 2 front war against the French in the west and the Muslims in the East. The German Austrian army where outnumbered 10 to one and fought a delaying battle around Vienna for 2 month mounting Ottoman casualties during the siege to 48.544 death.
On the Day of the Battle 50.000 Germans, had been fighting a Ottoman counter offensive (Still over 100 000 strong) since 04.00 in the morning when they spotted the counter attack. Trying to coordinate with the polish king for hours (since he was the formal leader) the Germans halted the Ottoman counter offensive and beat them back into the direction of the approaching polish forces. The 3000 strong winged hussars spearheaded a 18 000 strong Calvary attack at 17:00 that broke into the fleeing Ottoman forces beating them for good. The poles had a big part in the beating of the Ottoman siege but to claim they won the battle is just not right. I must have been a magnificent Charge and all but to give the Victory credit to the poles was a calculated move to a peace the Polish Lithuanian King since there was still a war to be fought in the west against the French. Let's be clear: Poland under the command of Jan III Sobieski kept its promise and defended the Holy League from Ottomans, which resulted in Islam not being the major religion in Europe and in exchange for that heroic act we have been betrayed by our allies (Prussia, Habsburg Empire, Russia) and Poland as a country ceased to exist for 123 years because of partitions.

Did you know the Winged Hussars are the inspiration to the American Calvary? Under the approval of General George Washington, the Polish born American Gen. Casimir Pulaski and Hungarian born Michael Kovats de Fabriczy formed the Pulaski Cavalry Legion during the American Revolution. Both Pulaski and Kovats made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for the independence of their new country.
Author Henryk Sienkiewicz would win the Nobel Prize for his works, including the Polish Trilogy, a series of epic novels that include the Winged Hussars. Sienkiewicz's work "On the Field of Glory" is about the events of the Battle of Vienna which also inspired the Sabaton song. The depiction of the Winged Hussars is likely an inspiration to the Riders of Rohan in the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien.

It's our history, you know. One of the brightest moments of polish history, of course people lowed it. We actually saved Europe from Muslim reign, saving Vienna from Otoman Empire siege. To this day memory of hussars lives; army panzer divisions take it's name, since obviously they were heavy infantry and when they charged, they destroyed everything in their path. And king Jan III Sobieski was a great king and smart tactic.

Thats the Legend :D the most accurate charge was in Lord of the rings by Rohhirim, but we have to remember that charge of Hussars was perfectly lined, today riders cannot recreate this formation becouse it takes houndrets of hours training horses and riders for such a perfect lined formation. And the Lances, pikes or how u wanna call it was far longer than in movies :D thay made special type of holding mounted on a saddle they were not holding it only with a hand... xD all those things are in modern books u can get it easy. when i finished this .... the winged Hussars arrived

Those big wings sticking over the head were used at the end of husaria, when it was the escort in funerals of prominent persons. And no one will ever believe in impression made on a dead body in a closed coffin. But yes, husaria used to make the strong impression on the enemy at the battle field, its horses before all. Nevertheless, this was done with other means.

During 200 years the Polish/Baltic elitforce on horses was the so called Hussars.
They had huge wings tied to their back in order to put fear in the enemy, and thats how they got their name, The Winged Hussars.

Actually, the wings had other main role, of cours it scares the shit out of you when somebody who has wings charges you on a horse, but the feathers of the wings while in charge made specific sound that scares horses who are not used to it.

To be more specific I would say each person in the painting represents a "Last Stand".
-Sparta - King Leonidas and the 300
-Blood of Bannockburn - Scottish defense of Stirling Castle
-Shiroyama - The last Samurai trying to maintain their authority and honor
-The Last Stand - 189 Swiss guards protecting the Vatican
      -etc.
In these cases it was stand and fight on last time and more than likely die.

And if you give a few feet of separation to the side and front to back the charge would have basically been 14 football fields of horses and men running at you 😂

That's what Polish army used in 1939 Dragoon type units that use horses as transport and high mobility on the battlefield than dismount and use lmg's kar98k's anti tank rifles and bofors 37mm AT cannons. They may not be a mechanised army but still a very mobile one. Sad that a well intentioned Italian journalist wrote an article that"colorised" the disparity between forces and sadly started the trope of polish cavalry using sabers on tanks. Then German and after the war Comunist propaganda cemented this fake trope. They used Dragoon tactics and modern AT weaponry and just used horses as transport (horses dont need gas)

Jan III Sobieski reportedly was so furious when they were returning that he told his soldiers that has he known how the city will thank him, he'd just watch Vienna burn and do nothing.

One (in my opinion quite probable) theory says that the hussars' wings served as protection against the Mongolian and Ottoman's soldiers use of lassos to take a horseman down. Instead of the hussar the rope stripped the wings instead. This might be just the beginning of the tradition that later gained other functions.

There is a legend about the victorious battle of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski at Vienna in 1683 and stop the invasion of the Ottoman Empire. The Polish nobleman, spy and diplomat Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki, the owner of the first café in Vienna, "Zur blauben Flasche", persuaded the owner of a nearby bakery, Peter Wendel to start baking crescent shaped bread to commemorate this victory. Apparently, only a hundred years later, she brought them from Austria to France, Marie Antoinette, who was their admirer. The first official recipe for croissants comes from 1839 and is associated with the person of August Zang, the owner of a Viennese bakery at the rue de Richelieu in Paris. This has led to croissants being banned by some Islamic fundamentalists.

Looking at the history of Europe, Poland has always defended the European butt. There is no country in Europe that has not owed your security to Poland. If not for Poland, many invaders from the east would have stopped at the Western Hybrids. Poland has always defended the eastern flank of Europe, and Europe was building its powers at that time. Until today, Western Europe has not repaid its debts to Poland. Poles paid a terrible price for this defense of the eastern borders of Europe. In gratitude for this defense, Europe has betrayed Poland many times, and everyone knows the results. That is why today Poles in Europe are not any immigrants. Today, Poles in Europe are everywhere, I repeat everywhere in my own home. Is it understandable?

With progressing Technology the Size of Armys shrink constantly, in the 16th Century their "modernest" Weapon was i think the Cannons or maybe Muskets so they had too keep at least eye contact to the enemy so they needed a bigger army to fear the enemys.
Today we (The US as an example) sits in Ramstein in Germany and operating Drones in the Middle East to kill People or Bombing.
I m truly fascenated of these Mediveal Battles, how they coordinated these Attacks or organise when and where they march.
At this time they only got Horses and they took some time go get from one country to another.

    • @terryhiggins5077
      @terryhiggins5077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It's the opposite actually. Army sizes have infact increased overtime. Higher technology means more people not having to farm, which means more people for everything including the military. Now a days most nations could field armies of a million or more (most don't due to their geopolitical situation or other reasons). If an older nation tried that, even if they could somehow muster that many men, they'd be unable to support it, and collapse just trying to feed the people not in in the army, let alone the army itself, then factor in the logistics....
Edit: The general trend of drone usage and less troops on the ground for the last two decades or so is an outlier in history. And I'd argue it is more due to the fact of there not having been a peer to peer conflict between the big boys due to the cold War and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union which left the US alone at the top

Battle of Vienna didn't finish this war , month later Battle by Parkany crush Ottoman empire . What winged hussar was worth next example :Charge of Kutyszcze september 1660, Hussar lieutenant Wladyslaw Wilczkowski's banner (approx. 130 accompanied hussar) encountered the rear guard of the retreating army of Moscow - two squadrons of Russian cavalry, and Cossack Regiment - about 1700-3000 people - Wilczkowski didn't had to think twice - he charged on them, reiters rushed to escape, raming their own infrantry, hussars caught them, slashing anything that moved, and then they've turned back and charge on the Cossacks infrantry again. Seeing what is going -the other hussar banner - Lieutenant Stanislaw Wyżycki - another 143 hussar horses and lances, joined the action. Loss for the Polish were few dead and wounded People, the side of Moscow - hundreds killed, several thousand army smashed and the morale of the rest of the Muscovite army - smashed into pieces. Hussar used lance 6 meter long ( 16. 68 feet ) too .

This is all mostly correct; the charge was awesome, everybody watched instead of fighting. But next to Vienna - it was the charge against nothing in fact - the 'otomans' were escaping. A day or two later next to the village Parkany a real victory took place. I say 'victory' but in the matter of fact it was a 'butchery' rather. All the same, the wars were led this way that time. But this was not the time Polish winged hussars seved Europe. In 1621 the otomans made an earlier rehearsal of 'walking' though Europe. Vienna, Rome, may be Paris were the milesteps in their plans. The hussars aided by Ukrainian cavalry stoped them. If you wish to know what happened there, than go to the slaughterhouse and watch. Than multiply by 2 (at least) and you'll have the idea.

As for giant armies, the only foreseeable possibility is a, probably limited in scale then even, Russian invasion. Just the way the Russian military is set up. Russia's always been an artillery army. Having Army group levels of artillery, literally hundreds of 18 152mm gun batteries, focus and isolate at most battalion sized Nato elements. Slamming into them the second the fire lifts and moves to blockade reinforcements with, on paper, two mechanized companies of infantry and a tank platoon with a further 2 motorized companies in reserve to exploit any breakthrough, if not achieve their own. And even if that first battalion fails to achieve its goal and is mauled to a man, theres 5 more battalions just like it right behind them. And if it doesn't look like there's the possibility of a breakthrough at one location, they'll divert echelons of ordinance to another sector to support a more promising attack.

You've asked whether we as a civilisation have outgrown the time of great armies conquering nations. Well, please look into what is happening to Belarus, or what happened during recent years in Ukraine and Georgia.
