Fun fact:J. J. R Tolkien was inspired by this particular battle, and he made it in lord of the rings known as battle for minas tirith.

He included aspects of it in the Battle of Helm's Deep, too. It's a siege, the mine that blows down the wall, and the Rohirrim coming to turn the tide just like the Hussars

King Sobieski of Poland led the relief army. First he had his troops drag artillery to the top of a mountain overlooking the Ottoman army.
The Turks thought it impossible to put artillery up there.
Second he mustered 20,000 cavalry to bring against the Turks, led by 3,000 elite winged Hussars.
They attacked coming down from the mountain where the Turks did not think possible.
With massed artillery firing down on the Turks and a 20,000 horse cavalry charge , it was too much for the 150,000 man Turkish army.
They were routed and Vienna was saved.

And 100 years later, the Austrians enslaved Poland in gratitude. These wings are not a decoration, but a protection against the arcana. The equipment of such a knight was worth the value of a village and it was the elite of the Polish nobility.

This song is about siege of Vienna, the Ottomans held war with Austria and the push them back to Vienna. As is said in the lyrics, in this time in Europe there was a pact between Christian powers about waging war against Islam (mostly). It was called holy league and pope could summon this forces to fight. If i remember correctly in this situation the other powers were afraid of letting the Ottomans get to middle Europe and so they offered their help, most significant was Polish heavy cavalery (winged hussars), leader of this united forces was polish king John III Sobieski and he commanded the attack to save the City.

Yes, the American cavalry with Kazimierz Pulaski was one of the best in the world! But Polish hussars were in the world, not only one of the best. The Hussars have been invincible for 125 years and are therefore the most successful cavalry in the history of the world. Usually, a hussar attack resulted in a complete destruction of the enemy's forces and no military formation from that period was able to successfully resist the hussar's charge. It was the elite of the Polish army (the equivalent of the Japanese samurai), being a unique, well-trained, extremely disciplined, agile, hard-hitting, heavy cavalry. The best shock cavalry. The Hussars used tactics of speed and maneuverability, especially in a full gallop charge in tight knee-to-knee formations. The men were individually well trained in horse riding and the use of weapons throughout their lifetime of practice, and a major part of their training was to combine these individuals into one unit. King Charles X Gustav of Sweden in 1655 said: "If I had ten thousand such hussars, I would expect to easily conquer not only Turkey, but the whole world." Tactics, training and equipment were decisive for successes.

@@FreeKanalThere was another commander like General Pułaski, or maybe more, and also in a similar situation, but not in the U.S. in Mexico. I am based on the historical book "The Shadow of Montezuma", I don't remember the author. The year is 1863 - another uprising against Russia breaks out. The uprising collapses in 1864. The insurgent troops evacuate to Prussia and Austria. France is ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew - Napoleon III. Austria and France reached an agreement and both countries decided to turn Mexico into the Empire of Mexico. The Emperor of Mexico was to be the brother of the Emperor of Austria and a Empress Eleanor of the Netherlands. Sent across the Atlantic along with the Austro-French Corps, which also included the Polish troops of Maximilian and his wife. This corps began to decimate the Mexicans, their troops without mercy. The Poles did not like it very much. The former senior sergeant of the January Uprising deserted. They passed. to the side of the Mexicans - they joined one of the partisan units. During one of the battles, the commander of this unit was killed. The insurgents chose a Pole as their commander - a senior sergeant. He started by reorganizing the unit into the Polish system. He taught his subordinates Polish tactics. The unit began to win victories. A legend began to form around the unit and the unit was constantly growing. Its fame also reached the President. This was the first part of his actions. At that time, the President of Mexico was a Juarez Indian, an educated man (he studied law in the United States). He was hiding with the Mexican Government. in the desert. Juarez, seeing that small units would not defeat the invaders, ordered the concentration of troops at the Thulancingo Fortress. This decision would almost end the armed resistance, because the commander of the Fortress was in collusion with the Austrians. The insurgent units were attacked from two sides and only thanks to the Pole they were saved. cauldron/encirclement completed. After this event, the Pole, who had been hiding his surname for fear of Tsarism sending his family to Siberia, now officially took his surname from the name of the Fortress: Thulancingo. Finally, the occupier found out where the President and the Government were hiding. To avoid capture (he did not trust his officers), he summoned a Pole and gave him the rank of Colonel. Having full confidence in Thulancingo, he ordered him to take him and the government to a safe place. When the move was completed, he appointed Colonel Thulancingo as an officer for special tasks. .Półkownik, on the orders of the President, caught and arrested even generals.Półkownik's family and descendants live in Mexico to this day.
We Francji rządzi bratanek Napoleona Bonaparte -Napoleon III.Austria z Francją się dogadała i oba państwa postanowiły ,by z Meksyku zrobić Cesarstwo Meksyku.Cesarzem Meksyku miał zostać brat Cesarza Austrii i a Cesarzową Eleonora Holenderska. Ta decyzja niemal by zakończyła zbrojny opór , bo dowódca Twierdzy był w zmowie z Austryjakami. By uniknąć pojmania (oficerom swoim nie wierzył),przywołał do siebie Polaka, nadał mu stopień Półkownika.Mając do Thulancingo pełne zaufanie polecił mu,by ten przeprowadził go i Rząd w bezpieczne miejsce.Gdy przeprowadzka została wykonana, mianował Półkownika Thulancingo oficerem do zadań specjalnych.Półkownik na rozkaz Prezydenta wyłapywał i aresztował nawet generałów.Rodzina-potomkowie Półkownika żyją w Meksyku do dzisiaj.

Its about a most famous polish military unit, the winged Hussars that have been considered one of the best cavalry outfits of all times and this is a most famous battle around Vienna in 1683 where the city was besieged by a 150 k strong Ottoman army and they were saved and relieved by an allied Army which contained over 3000 polish cavalry Winged hussars under the command of king Jan III Sobieski.
As a side note, the 1st Polish Armoured Division that fought under british command in 1944/45 in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany had a Winged Hussar as its Combat sign! Keep up the cool reactions, you are so cool to watch!

This is one of my absolute favourites by Sabaton, together with Last Stand, Bismarck and Dreadnought. About Sabaton making a song about Romania, they take suggestions from fans, you can write your idea about an event (or person) you think they should write a song about on their official site. I think they should write a song about Vlad the Impaler

While the armies took as much care as possible for the horses they ultimately were pieces of equipment to be used for their purpose with little regard to losses. It took decimation versus automatic weapons in WW1 and relegation to pack animals in WW2 to end the reliance on such noble animals. Fun reaction from you both as usual.

I look around and I see my home fade away
My time at home now feels far too short
Just a youth, barely a man when duty called me
If i get to see my home again, that I do not know
Amongst friends from my village, I went out to fight
    And the world burned

    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?

Went to fight for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there where death awaits, not heroism
In fields where kinsmen fall no song is heard
Challenging our destiny one more time

    Far from home
    Baptized and die in battle

    And the world burned

    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?

And when my time runs out
    Who cares then?
    They fight on
Does a soldier get a worthy end?
    To fall asleep
    Pass away
    And never wake up

    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?

Husaria walczyła na pieszo za barykadami we wiosce a Tatarzy atakowali na koniach. Husarzy odparli Tatarów. Wielu Tatarów zginęło w tej walce.

My father had a book on the history of cavalry, when I was a kid, that I paged through and partially read. Their comment was that the "wings" of the Winged Hussars had a functional use, besides being ornamental and looking cool. That Poles had to fight Tatar and Cossack light cavalry also, whom used the lasso to pull enemy riders from the saddle. The wings were meant to entangle the lasso and grab it, then they break away, instead of the rider being dismounted. So the wings both looked cool and had a purpose.

King John III Sobieski, going to the aid of besieged Vienna, used an unusual maneuver - the cavalry (winged hussars) moved through the dense forest covering the hills near Vienna, which in itself was unusual and difficult, and launched a charge against the rear of the Ottoman army. The charge of the heavy-armed cavalry (armor was worn by horsemen and horses), unleashed down the hills, made them pass through the Turkish army, composed mainly of infantry, like a steel battering ram through a wall of cardboard-gypsum.

There is an anecdote from this great battle that the Germans, advancing from the east, stopped their advance on the Turkish army only to see the destructive charge of the Hussars. Of course, the Poles did not win alone because the Holy League army was much more. However, the heavy armed cavalry led to panic in the Turkish/Ottoman troops. Behind the success is also the decision of King Jan III Sobieski to attack from the Krincholm hill, which the enemy did not expect and did not place guards or cannons there at all.

But if you somehow want something about Romania, then they're song Stalingrad is good. I mean they are singing about the both sides, Red Army and Axis, so Romania and Hungary where there too.
Also, there is a romanian band called Trooper. They have two romanian nhistoric albums about Stefan the Great and Vlad the Impaler. The songs are in romanian but you can translate the lyrics in english.

Three were also counter tunnels that the defenders where digging and they would meet underground and start fighting under the walls. The walls fell. the city was opened for the Turks to start pouring in and kill everyone............ THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!!!

The Polish hussars were one of the best cavalry in the history of the world.
In 1683, the Polish hussars saved Europe from the threat of the Ottoman Empire by going to the aid and saving besieged Vienna. Austria thanked us for this 100 years later. Austria expressed its gratitude in such a way that together with Prussia and Russia they dismantled the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and for 123 years Poland ceased to exist.
Today, Europe is once again threatened by the invasion of Muslim immigrants and there are no longer any hussars to defend it.

Two reasons to hate Sweden? I think there's more reasons to like them. Shall we start with...Sabaton?

The Holy league consisted of 3 armies for the liberation of Vienna: frpm Lithania, Poland and the Holy Roman Empire. There was also a contingent sent by the King of Morocoo, who was not eager to see the Ottomans gaining power and territory. It is a bit short to limit the battle to the Polish army.

Sabaton songs are sometimes about special happenings or battles like "No bullets fly" or the "Last Battle", but also dedicated to special troops like the "nightwitches", the "stormtroopers", or in this case the "winged hussars", or even special people that stood out of the crowd, like the red baron or the soldier of three armies, so if the song title would be "Holy League" or "Battle of Vienna" i am fully with you, because they were only a small part even for the troops that came from Poland but among them the winged hussars were those that stood out of the crowd with their impressive gear and look, compared to most of the troops they looked kinda badass, they had those carved silver and golden breastplates with gems, (some chivalry troops in that days might have such stuff too but they used such gear rather for parades or as ceremonial gear then for battle) combined with exotic fur and those "angelic" wings, Even in eye-witness stories you do not read much about the other troops, it seems like the enemies were more impressed by those "angelic knights" or "knights on winged horses" then about the whole force of the Holy League.
