MCL usually can heal naturally without surgery... 3:10 if you have frequent notable clicking or popping, the ligament is stretched/loose, knee stability is impaired so you have extra joint movement. it's a big factor to determine an MCL tear. 9:49 you need to brace the knee for a few weeks, wear a knee brace that hinges with stiff brackets on either side to protect the ligament and give it time to heal (ex Hinged Shock Doctor Knee Brace).
my L knee gives out off/on descending stairs, has pain off/on since 2011-2017 soccer days (age 44-50) which was only possible by wearing a basic knee sleeve (quit due to odd pre-parkinson injuries). my MCL seems to get torqued by my normal everyday pivoting movements (or lack of proper pivot on L side re warped parkinsons neuro-signalling) to get in/out of car/bed, change direction, etc.
when it clicks, it's on every stride 1/2 second before planting that foot (off/on for many years), on for 3 days, off for 10-15 days. it limits my ability to exercise ex usually able to walk 15-20min before it starts to click/hurt/bother, so been 'in big denial' until now. recently got bad enough to force baby steps, limping and the need to get first knee brace with hinges i find.

Most surgeons are doing the best they can with what they know. They are educated in surgery so they tend to see surgical solutions. There just aren't many specialists like us out there that know how to handle common injuries naturally without surgery so they don't have as much information available for the public.

    1. if i got click/pain/limp but no swelling might it be less severe and easier to heel?
    2. with low MCL clicking, what typically causes it? what is the ligament catching on?
got 10+ year old MCL at times with pain/click/limp, specially when straight and a knee that gives-out descending stairs, other times with no pain/click/limp/give-out. i can walk one minute with pain, clicks and half stride limp; the next with no pain, clicks or limp.
i know i'm reinjuring MCL with my routine mobility: by ill-pivoting to get in/out of car, odd change of direction with leg cross-over, and have quasi pigeon-toe stride. i now get pain when leg straight so needing a pillow under knee to sleep.
but some of us are neurological/elderly/overweight ex i have parkinsons which can make dressing and pulling on/off spandex sleeves difficult so we may need the wrap-around (no sleeve) type knee brace that we can strap-on over pants. so let's hope this provides 'enough' protection for the ligament.

Hey C J, sorry to hear that you are having to wear a knee brace :( We do not have a video for the timeline of the recovery process yet, but it is in the plan to make one! The doctor that recommended your brace should have a better timeline for you because it depends on what grade of tear you have. Sorry we did not have a specific answer for you, but we hope your recovery goes well!

For me it happened while training Boxing. I did a quick step back and the floor was wet behind me and I over stretched both knees. Both knees made a cracking noise. For a month and a half I feel as if I have been stabbed on both knees on the interior side. After 2 months and with stretching, massage and ice it started to improve.

I am 70 years old and has been diagnosed with MCL injury in October last year. My Ortho surgeon told me to wear a brace and that it will heal naturally (like everyone said) in a month or so but it’s been past 9 months now and it still gives me burning pain. From presentations I have watched in TH-cam regarding MCL, and based on the degree of pain I am experiencing, Iwould say that mine is a Grade III distal MCL injury or a tear. I am just wondering why it has not healed naturally over the 9-month period. What do you think can be done to this? Should I have a surgery to fix this. I’ve had arthroscopy on the same knee because of meniscal tear but that was way back 2006. Is there a possibility that there may be other underlying causes of this ailment? Please help.

I to have a burning pain, which doesn't seem to be referenced very often. I liken it to a hot coal being taken out of a grill and placed on the mcl area just above the knee joint. I wish I could find an answer and I am considering the knee brace now.

I love this site I commented months ago about you listing the symptoms of a MCL tear my knee fit all of them especially the popping of the knee in a pattern of steps .After some time the pain was gone to a large extent but I may have helped it without knowing how and why it help I’m hoping someone can give me a reason why pain is almost totally gone.Let me explain ,While having all the symptoms I also felt like leg was going to collapse I felt weakness on the medial side back of the knee in the hamstring area.I thought I should stretch my hamstring so I sat on floor spread and straightened legs and leaned forward slowly .I immediately could tell th area that is feeling weak was tighter and the stretch was more painful that other parts of back of knee. The other leg had alittle tightness but not stretching pain.Within in just 2 days I could feel my knee pain gone and a sense of stability has return. What happened here.Any info would be greatly appreciated .Thank you.

I think that with your explanation i have 100% MCL injury. I had a huge guy fall into the side of my leg to the point thay it looled like a freak accident. Everyone on the court ran towards me with great urgency to help me up. Well i was able to get up and was pretty mobile just with a slight discomfort. About 2 hrs later the pain and stiffness magnified 110% to the point were moving my leg its brings me severe pain. Is there a possibility that mine ripped completely since my mobility to my right leg has been 80% limited. I find my self using my my hands to adjust my leg if im laying down and or to place it on the floor feom the couche. Can you please elaborate if tou can on my situation. Thank you.

Is an MRI advised to diagnose the MCL tear? I have the option of getting one, but am pretty sure it’s the MCL. Wondering if I need to jump through that hoop, or is it unnecessary? BTW, it would be an MRI without contrast. I do not want dye in my system 😬 Thanks

I've had knee osteoarthritis on the inside of my knee for one year. I've had to sleep sitting up with legs elevated. Been sleep deprived for a year. I discovered recently I can lay on couch and elevate legs on arm rest of couch. Not the whole night though. No Drs in my town take my pain serious. Some want me to do some pt exercises. But it causes me SEVERE pain and inflammation stirs up. Plus most days just walking around house or showering causes pain. Hope by now your better. It's disabling and not fun.

Can falling on your knees cause an MCL injury? I fell down a few steps and landed on my knees on a concrete floor. Since then I've had inner knee pain and sometimes it feels like it clicks or grinds, and I can feel it shift at times. I cannot stand for a long period of time without pain, and it hurts my inner knees to walk. I can't walk for any distance without pain. It's been this way for a few years.
