Troy, when I first started watching TH-cam, I just assumed it was a platform for people to upload videos from their iPhones and GoPros, and quickly realized how people could monetize this medium and if they had a modicum expertise in just about anything that would create something viable to the public they would have a Eureka moment. I am a retired union lithographer who enjoys homestead content like yours rather than watching broadcast boob tube TV.
I’m part of that 20% still watching to the end! You’ve only touched the surface of passive income. Before that name was given, we called it mailbox money! Here’s my example of something quite different: in the 80’s & 90’s, I was buying rental homes like monopoly. Yes, I had perfect credit and money in the bank. I bought 20 rentals, each with a value between 100k and 200k. I managed them myself and did most repairs. It was hectic for 15 years. Then it began to even out as the remaining mortgages were being paid off. Now back to passive income. In the early years, I made $100 to 200$ per month per house. As rents increased, so did income. Then when mortgages were paid off, profits skyrocketed! Now, I’ve gotten rid of all the problem rentals, and after subtracting insurance and taxes, every thing left is all spending money! How many houses do you need supplying about $1,000.00 per month (after expenses) passive income to make you happy? Today, so much has changed, I would never do rentals again. Back in the old days, if they didn’t pay rent, I could remove the front door and take it to my shop for repairs or painting and it would be ready the day I was paid in full. Today, you can’t even go in the house without their permission. In the future, there will be controls on rent prices and everything. Ecclesiastes says there’s a time for everything. The time for owning rentals has passed. Every time I get a problem tenant, I just sell the house. I just don’t care. Oh by the way, after taxes, it’s all spending money too!
If only 20% finished this video it's their loss. I'm a disabled veteran on a fixed income, passive income, such as those you mentioned, could prove to increase my income. God Bless.
Great no nonsense info. You are a down to earth kind of guy. That in itself is appealing to a broad spectrum of people. IMHO. And it's just fun hanging out with you while doing a project or every day chores. I think first and foremost as a TH-cam creator, (my opinion as a subscriber not a creator) it is important to be real. Including mistakes, shortcomings, ignorance, and the process of self education, research, and gaining experience applying new skills. This all seems quite obvious on one hand, but practical life skills are not being taught these days. Even learning how to learn is absent from the school system, and has been for years. I think many are yearning for direction, inspiration, and rediscover creativity. To achieve self fulfillment by accomplishment of something worthwhile is a common desire. But many people haven't a clue on what it is or how to do it. I think this is why channels like this are so popular. I say thank you for making a difference sharing
While you were explaining the ad sales on TH-cam, I got an ad break. Was pretty humorous. I don’t have the hustle you do so I’m going the active income route as I lucked into a career where I can do well for myself, then will tackle starting a “homestead” later in life while doing remote work until retirement. One thing I love about this is the transparency in your video, very admirable.
Ebooks...I wrote four action adventure short novels, spent hundreds of hours and hundreds of dollars, sold virtually none on Amazon kindle and Print on Demand. They've cost me significantly more in time and treasure than they've returned. I wrote them because I had a ton of fun writing them (and I continue to write despite no income from it). Unless you want to engage in costly and intense marketing, they likely won't sell. Even then, there is no guarantee unless its something people really want. The top ebooks are often written by the top print-published in the book store. As for owning a homestead, I always thought it would be a good idea to hire a photography and make calendars to sell online or at local farm markets or gift stores and split the profit with the photographer.
I'm glad you covered TH-cam a little better than most. When we started our channel we had lofty goals that quickly circled the drain. We did all the research but unfortunately the search engines show you the success not what it takes behind the scenes or any additional costs that come into making "passive" income. We learned quickly and had some unexpected expenses and are continueing to learn. A quick synopsis: our cameras we were using were subpar and with that in modern video era if you're using low quality (ie less than 1080) you are not going to have videos people will stay around for. Second was our computer was too old and did not have the ability or hardware to run video editing software. Then we ran into audio problems. And finally one of the biggest things is figuring out the editing. There is a learning curve and in most cases additional expense that is typically glossed over when researching that can effect your Hope's and plans. Thankfully a 2 years into filming and a year and a half into posting on you tube things have stabilized and we can concentrate on better content and editing not just figuring out everything into he process. And to close... I apologize for the long comment and trolling. I just felt that some things are grossly neglected in all the research I've done and thought I would share our experience (so far). Keep up the good work and God bless.
TROY, amazing video! As I watched it I was totally engaged in what you were explaining even as you were in a chicken COUP, and feeding pigs !!! You're very intelligent on how you portrayed this content and your editing and production skills shined! It makes sense! Thanks!
We're part of the 20% that hung around to the end - but I suspect your retention was better than that... This was a really good video. We know this, because we're commenting which we rarely do simply because we watch so many different videos - but this video in particular gave us a lot to think about, and some great tips and wanted to let you know you did a great job!
Actually a great video, having had several businesses over the years, and not doing hardly any of your ideas, I eventually went to work 9 to 5, which was less stressful, but also way less enjoyable. That was way before the digital era, but I have been retired 16 years and enjoy the digital efforts of everyone I follow on TH-cam. Thank You
Great content. Couldn’t agree more with the idea around diversification. Grandma was right about not putting all your eggs in one basket. Perfect ad break!😆😆
Book writing is an interesting idea you don't hear of often as passive income. I wrote and self published a novel back in 2012 and still get royalty check every month or so. Ive written a few articles as well.. I'm currently writing a pastured pig how to and hope to publish in the next few months and I have a 2nd novel in the works as well...
Doing the chat during the farm chores is a good reminder about the actual hands on work that homesteading requires. Oh man, the advice at 15:06 is huge. Again, it’s real work. That’s why some people make money at it and other people don’t. It’s not sitting around waiting for something to happen.
Troy, thanks for diving into this after several of us saying yes to more info. Thankful for folks like you who are wiling to share, help and network to make many of these things a reality. Stay warm and safe, only 6 more weeks of winter. :)
Thank you so much Troy. I am just getting my place going, and I am 100% disabled, so I am trying to figure things out. I need more income. I used to make six figures before my last 9 operations at the VA. I just love my hogs, they really are my animal of choice. All of the info you have put out over the years has been very helpful, you are real and honest and not putting on a show. It helps some of us that grew up doing confinement animals, the business info is awesome. Thank you.
Hey, where can I find some of that underwear you talked about!? We've just started a shell of a channel, but hope to be able to start adding more content to it as we move into spring time...plus I have my first tractor on the way, so maybe will have a broader appeal highlighting my experiences with it. Thanks for all the assistance/advice you provide to others!
Fantastic video. Greatly appreciate this information. I have always appreciated how meticulous you are in your videos. And this one is over the top!!!!
Good video I don't have a job nor do I own any business but I have a green thumb and I grow my own vegetables and fruits here in southern IL and I could probably start a landscapeing business but that would probably be very difficult when I don't have a vehicle but I almost know everything there is to know about landscaping iv done lots of it and actually absolutely love landscaping and interested in ppl to live on home steads or off grid anyways God bless everyone n have a great and wonderful day
Troy, thank you so much for sharing your experiences and wisdom. It is truly amazing that there are so any ways to generate revenue today with a modicum of experience and capital outlay. Thanks for sharing your experiences and especially your transparency. God bless.
I wish you and your family all the best in your endeavors...may you enjoy your journey while living the type of life you love...be well and take good care.
Thanks for the very helpful and instructive video, Troy. I stayed til the end, as I always do! P.S. I also watch Morgan, and I have to say I like you and your videos a whole lot better. I do love seeing all of his animals, tho, so keep showing us your chickens and pigs, and also when you are working on the sawmill. That's what I find the most interesting. There was so much good information in this video, I'm going to have to watch it a few more times.
Having recently been laid off at 60, I'm trying to keep my eyes open to whatever is possible to bridge the gap to retirement. Surprisingly hard to do after ultimately ending up a specialist in the space biz. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I watched the whole Video . I enjoy the content you put out and you are easy to listen to. I need to get back to working on my channel. But as you already know making a quality video is time consuming, a lot of work and gets in the way of timely work production. AS I work a full time Career and only have the weekend to work on building up for my full time Homestead side line. I need to do better pre planning and invest in more and better video equipment. Keep the videos coming, I will send a Thumbs up
Hi Troy. I know this video is a little older but my husband and I just recently found your channel and we enjoy it a lot, especially since we are fellow West Virginians. We live in Point Pleasant (Mothman!) Anyway, we are looking for land to homestead on. We want to go debt free and have passive income…We own a house with some acreage in McDowell county. I don’t know how familiar you are with McDowell county but for several reasons, we don’t want to live there. In recent years, ATV traffic has increased dramatically there because of the Hatfield and McCoy, and the Outlaw trails. So we’ve been thinking about turning the house we have there into an Airbnb. I had originally wanted to sell the house and land but my husband brought up the Airbnb idea. What do you think about the success of doing that in that area? Not sure how well it would do. But with the ATV traffic, it might?
Great advice, although, I would say people should invest into the market as well, even a small amount can grow substantially over time. Just look at it as another source of income to add to the other 5,10, 20 streams? ;)
hahaha... Great timing on that Ad at 8:30 google... "If you're watching my video right now, most likely there was an Ad that played at the beginning of it or at the end, or sometimes--" (ad plays) "--somethings pops up; I have no control over that..."
We hope to see you at our first homesteaders of America conference over in va come October ……😃🌈🤙(p.s…I almost turned it off when I saw the internet screen you put on)
That was hilarious! The add in the middle popped up at exactly the point where you said "sometimes they pop up randomly" there were no other adds though. Im worried that everyone relying on internet based buisness is just another form of control - said it yourself, if you did something they don't like. Remember, google and youtube are nothing more then user uploaded content as well, why do they have the power to control peoples lives? They aren't lawmakers.
A lot of great information and a lot to consider. Also, I can't help but think if Bette Midler met you she would have to eat her derogatory words. lol Keep doing what you do, brother. We appreciate your videos.
I see a number of channels doing tshirts. From My Little Homestead and their unique art to Beau of the Fifth Column selling the amusing shirts he wears in his videos.
The only problem I've seen with your AirBnB deal is how in certain markets there are now more AirBnB short term rentals available than actual rental homes. New Orleans has seen this decimate their housing market post-Katrina. People who have lived in the city for generations are being priced out because of the short term rental market catering to tourists while screwing over the people who live and work there.
And when building your audience find a way to partner with other youtubers. I know I found your channel after you visited the Hollars, and I found them after they visited the Rhodes.
I've been subscribed since you had about 15k subscribers. Youtune still recommends your "$200 per acre" video to me even though I've watched it a couple times.
So, I have a question.....what made me find your channel was you and your wife going out and looking at property. Do you all take a fee for looking at property for peeps?
I can't say your are misleading people, but this really isn't reality based. There is one word that kills all of your ideas ' discoverability'. If you create an ebook, an online course, take photos....and put it at the appropriate places.. nobody is going to find it, there are thousands of people who did exactly what you did. It isn't even a lottery ticket where you might get lucky. You need to become an influencer in an area you excel at, build a following, and then monetize your followers in the ways you described... and it takes time.. . Once you have that following, ONLY then can you monetize it passively. TH-cam and a website/blog with articles and then IG or tiktok.. You need to have followers first, then lead them to your ebook, courses, print-on-demand stuff. Focus on providing good content first, then the passive income comes later.
@@mattruby3966 He is a great story teller - and I like the interaction he has with his animals. But his videos are usually much longer than this channel as Troy tends to get to the point quicker while still having some fun. Love your channel, Troy! Very informative!
Well Most of the time I watch the whole video, your big add was Ebaymotors. I have watched thousands of TH-cam videos, I think a video with the family and a pet running around is nice. I have gotten tired of lots of channels and just stop looking at them. Right now, in no particular order I watch your channel I watch a sawmill channel near Pittsburgh with Mark and Eddie, a hobo called shoestring, and a guy that rides trains called ranoutonarail and JawTooth. None of you guys play background music, well very little. I do think some videos are tooooooooo long. 15 to 18 minutes is right for me, my attention span is short.
I have also been trading with her, The profits are secured and over a 100% return on investment directly sent to your wallet. I made up to $560,000 in 2months trading with her
I came in contact with Mrs Charlotte in a conference at California, I also made $18,540 with Mrs Charlotte Junko Walsh after some business days of trading I got my profit directly sent to my wallet. Good woman ♥️,I bless the day I met her
Thats strange, I like his channel BECAUSE he gets to the topic at hand quickly and pours a lot of information into the usual 12-30 min video. Most of the channels I like are 45 min to 2-1/2 hrs so don't get to watch them often. id rather listen/watch shorter videos that are very informative than long winded, spend the day with me videos. I couldn't do what you do, Troy. Great job! Love "shorts". LOL
Troy, when I first started watching TH-cam, I just assumed it was a platform for people to upload videos from their iPhones and GoPros, and quickly realized how people could monetize this medium and if they had a modicum expertise in just about anything that would create something viable to the public they would have a Eureka moment.

Very informative video, Troy. So many nuggets! This video will be up there at the top of your channel, along with the $200/acre video

Great channel and solid advice! Funny that I got an ad, RIGHT in the middle of you talking about ads. :)
Hello we live in the middle of alberta canada. We get -40 temps. You can shovel snow in containers and the chickens will survive.
Troy, thank you so much for sharing your experiences and wisdom. It is truly amazing that there are so any ways to generate revenue today with a modicum of experience and capital outlay. Thanks for sharing your experiences and especially your transparency. God bless.
troy i watched the entire video. thanks for doing what you are doing.
I wish you and your family all the best in your endeavors...may you enjoy your journey while living the type of life you love...be well and take good care.
Troy, you have given me inspiration for what I will write today.
Thank you.
Indeed what a great motivating and spoken from experience video. Thank you. Great stuff for a cold winters day.
Great video I watched from beginning to end multiply and diversify your income No more 9 to 5.
I made it all the way through. Very good information and advice.
Thanks for the very helpful and instructive video, Troy. I stayed til the end, as I always do! P.S. I also watch Morgan, and I have to say I like you and your videos a whole lot better. Great advice. You got me thinking. Thank you!
Good stuff, thank you!
This was very interesting and I watched to the end. Good info.
Great video! As you were talking about ads. An ad came on lol.
I'd love to see a video on how you went about getting your house built and financed. I've always wanted to get some acreage, and build a home, but...
Having recently been laid off at 60, I'm trying to keep my eyes open to whatever is possible to bridge the gap to retirement. Surprisingly hard to do after ultimately ending up a specialist in the space biz. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Thanks for the video and your time. Appreciate your ideas and advice.
You've got my wheels turning! Great discussion, thank you!
Great video I really appreciated the true insight of it all.❤
Thanks Troy, appreciate you being honest
Your videos are always very informative. Nice video.
As your talking about the ad, one pops up.
Troy, you’re awesome!
New sub! You are likeable and I love these tips!
Great video Troy!

Building plans. Have you considered selling your chicken coop plans?
Yes, I have considered it. I need to draw up the plans for conventional lumber.
You should make a video about the time a Sasquatch raided your chicken coupe!
Great advice, although, I would say people should invest into the market as well, even a small amount can grow substantially over time. Just look at it as another source of income to add to the other 5,10, 20 streams? ;)
Great Video. Lots to chew on.
Thanks great video I'm looking at starting a TH-cam channel have a side hustle.
Good stuff Troy, thanks.
😄 I only stuck around till the end cuz this was playing in the background as I cooked. I have no chance of ever making any of those ideas work.
hahaha... Great timing on that Ad at 8:30 google... "If you're watching my video right now, most likely there was an Ad that played at the beginning of it or at the end, or sometimes--" (ad plays) "--somethings pops up; I have no control over that..."
We hope to see you at our first homesteaders of America conference over in va come October ……😃🌈🤙(p.s…I almost turned it off when I saw the internet screen you put on)
Thanks for sharing🙂
Bottom line is that it all adds up. That is the lesson.
Great video!

Crazy, isn’t it?
8:30 for me! 🤣
I stayed until the end. Just thought you'd want to know.😉
A lot of great information and a lot to consider. Also, I can't help but think if Bette Midler met you she would have to eat her derogatory words. lol Keep doing what you do, brother. We appreciate your videos.
Hey Troy, you got any ideas for making money watching youtube videos? hahahha I watched it all... lol
Now that would be some passive income!!
Yes all the way to the ham-end of the video. 😁😁😁
Hello From Argentina, do you think about carbon bonds?
That land video pops up in my recommended at least once a week if not more often but I've yet to click on it >.
I see a number of channels doing tshirts. From My Little Homestead and their unique art to Beau of the Fifth Column selling the amusing shirts he wears in his videos.

i really think you could do a online course giving more details.
I've been subscribed since you had about 15k subscribers. Youtune still recommends your "$200 per acre" video to me even though I've watched it a couple times.
Hi, Troy I always watch your videos to the end. I just don't comment on all of them.
Great video

Yes, there is a fee for that service. If you want to send me your contact info via our website we can discuss the details.
Hmm...interesting topic, not everyone talks about this
Trying to star it, I just retired!!!!!
Need some land!!!!
Video starts at 3:25 and drags on from there.
I should hire you to write summaries for all of my videos…
Do you upload to the alternate video sites? have you thought about it?
Focus on providing good content first, then the passive income comes later.
strongly disagree with you on goldshaw farms sorry. I tried watching him....I'm still watching you.
He does have more personality than Troy and can tell a story, but that personality just doesn't interest me either.

Despite the economic downturn I have made $250,000 just in two weeks CHARLOTTE JUNKO WALSH you are amazing.
Same here, I started with $12,000 now earning $58,300 bi-weekly profits with her trading program.

I wanted to trade crypto but I got confused by the fluctuations in price 🙄
I came in contact with Mrs Charlotte in a conference at California, I also made $18,540 with Mrs Charlotte Junko Walsh after some business days of trading I got my profit directly sent to my wallet. Good woman ♥️,I bless the day I met her
Please how can I contact her please 🙏
And later you'll spend all that money in medical care for diabetes and heart disease.
What no bitcoin mining? Lol
I don't think i am good at anything..... dammit.
Why are you tubers so long winded?
My long windedness doesn’t just stop at TH-cam.
LOL
Excellent video!
Very informative!
