  • Rey is the modern poster-girl for a Mary Sue, and here are the reasons why she is one and Luke Skywalker most certainly is not. BTW - may the fork be with you.

When Ahsoka, an actual strong female character who is loved by the fans, faced a trained sith for the first time, she lasted about 2 seconds and only survived because the sith was hoping to get information from her.

If people love her only because of her outfit and her attitude, everyone would've loved her from the beginning. But they didn't. When she first showed up, the fanbase was divided, with most people either not caring or hating her.
Whatever your thoughts are on her outfit, she earned the love of the fanbase because of, and you even mentioned it in your comment, *character development*.
Despite her controversial early appearance and her questionable outfit, she became a beloved character because she was written to be a *good* character. Rey never earned any of that because she was written to be a beloved character first without going through the work to get it.

Even Anakin, literaly the chosen one, created by the force itself, lost to dooku on geonosis.
    1. he got his hand cut off
    2. he had obiwan (who had 30-something years of training) to help him
    3. he´s alredy been training for 10 years.
    4. both Anakin and Obiwan would have died if Yoda hadn´t saved the day.
    5. even with yoda´s help dooku escaped.
    Why?
Because Dooku was one of the best lightsaber duelists in the history of the jedi, a match for grandmaster yoda, and simply meeting the chosen one doesn´t turn him into a clumsy padawan overnight.

If Luke were as big a Mary Sue as Rey is he would have pulled the X-Wing straight out of the swamp water on first try and Yoda would have gaped and marveled about how he has nothing else to teach Luke because there's nothing he knows that isn't what Luke already possesses. Luke would then go on his merry way to Bespin and have Vader for breakfast, and Vader would beg Luke to ally with him instead of threatening Luke at swordpoint to join him.
I don't stereotype easily but it's apparent how sequel thumpers are either braindead individuals who value agenda more than good storytelling (which makes them ill-fitted for judging what kind of story is good and what is not--Dunning-Kruger effect is a thing), or naive people who has never come into contact with a single good story.

My favorite mary sue moment is when shes swimming in the second movie. They made it a point in the first movie to have Rey remark about how green the planet they visit is. @nicksawtelle6475 3 ปีที่แล้ว +263

I'm not trying to start anything, but it's because Leia and Ahsoka had good character arcs and development that made us root for them and love them. They failed a lot and were knocked down a lot, having tons of crap thrown their way and losing many friends and loved ones, but they were able to eventually rise above all of that and fight back, and win. It's a reality in life that we never succeed in life on the first attempt. Sometimes you have to fail in order to eventually succeed, and that's why we love Ahsoka and Leia. Because they failed a number of times, but eventually succeeded in the end, whereas Rey was someone who always succeeded on the first attempt. I get in movies there has to be suspension of disbelief, but you also need to have realism as well.

Darth Maul's lightstaff would be more easy for Rey if she understood that it isn't blunt weapon anymore, but one-handed lightsaber? Not.

Rey’s gender directly impacts her negatively as a character. Here’s why:
Luke was constantly under threat of physical harm and death, and he gets his ass whipped consistently throughout the OT. You feared for him, and related to him, because the movies showed you clearly that the Force didn’t make him a deity. Dude got his hand chopped off, FFS.
Rey is never really going to be physically harmed because she is a girl. Disney is NOT going to release a movie where the female lead is maimed and beaten like Luke was.
Kylo never punches her right in the face, never draws blood, never Force chokes her, never physically hurts her. He uses the Force to restrain her in TFA, but she is never assaulted and never suffers lasting wounds the way Kylo does with the scar on his face. He is never fighting her at full strength with absolute intent to KILL her. Hell, he’s flirting with her throughout TLJ. Imagine the uproar had it been Rey who had her back carved up by the lightsaber instead of Finn. Imagine them trying to redeem Kylo after he beats the shit out of a girl. No way. Kill Han? Whatever. Hit a girl? He’s irredeemable.

She is introduced into the story as a downtrodden nobody, naive and good-hearted but inexperienced in war and in the force. By all Star Wars logic and common sense, she should end up in big trouble on her quest, she should be in way over her head and should not be able to survive without a lot of help. Being an underdog is often what helps us sympathize with protagonists. But the underdog introduction is one big lie as Rey handles everything with no problem, never being put in a situation that she can't get out of by herself just fine. Even being captured alone on a planet full of stormtroopers and kylo rens doesn't slow her down.
That's the difference to characters like Dream and Superman. Their stories do not lie about who they are. We know that they are experienced, powerful, confident and all around pretty great. But the stories are aware of that fact, so they make us sympathize with the characters in other ways, by having them face big moral choices, or exploring the burden of their tremendous responsibilities or by finding their vulnerable points.

I remember reading a manga (or a light novel, can't say) a while ago, when I wasn't aware of any of that bs and thought it was useless, but now I regret not remembering its name.
It explored the idea of the Mary Sue by presenting her as a goddess pretending to be humans, and using her supernatural powers to force people to like her and/or have an unexplainable obsession towards her. She was using her powers to force people with already established skills and relationships to throw everything in her favor and ostracized those who didn't fall for it.
Anyone who was disagreeing with her or antagonized her in any way was castigated by the other characters and was seen as mean, stupid and jealous.
Old, wise, skilled, experimented characters (the setting was that she introduced later in an already established story) were all bested by her and couldn't stop showering her in praise, to the point that she even imparted lessons to them, regardless of what happened before her arrival.
And the most meta part: whenever any character questioned how comes she is that capable of everything or even asked about concrete elements of her story, life and experience, she would violently recoil and dismiss the interrogation...

very good point. if the story (and by extension the author) were simply self aware that the character is a mary sue it would already change things drastically and make the character NOT a mary sue. if rey were introduced as a perfect character that can do anything and the other characters actually treated her as such ,
THIS would make a more better and honest scenario because we could create a different kind of conflict where the other characters could lump all the work and expectations on rey because they think they can depend on her for everything which can create problems like, like crushing rey with too much work and expectations , or making Rey not know how to work well with others or not being able to trust others because she's used to doing everything alone and used to the idea that she's just better at things than everyone else.
hence making her too hard headed and unable to work well in teams.
This story premise alone would already make rey NOT a mary sue because there's actually real struggle but its more internal.

Her being a scavenger doesn't come of use in the other movies. Her ability to pilot is only used early on and beyond a random mentioned in RoS to imply Rey is a better pilot than Poe (the pilot character wtf) might as well not exist. Her actual fighting experience with a staff is quickly dropped. She's even shown to be competent at swimming and with boats despite being from a desert planet.
Pretty much the moment when Kylo tries to read her mind, her entire skillset seems to change to "i'm a jedi" and her previous character is gone.
Luke's other skills took a backseat once he got to Yoda in empire, but until then were shown to be a continued asset, and is even how he scored the 'win' in the first movie.

    • @simenamundsen3166
      @simenamundsen3166 5 ปีที่แล้ว +105

Not to mention that said loses were either minor or was through the assistance of others. Luke was hit during the attack of the first Death Star, albeit not seriously damaged. He would however have been shot down if it wasn't for this other squad mates. He wouldn't even have gotten close to the Death Star had it not been for the other pilots that gave their life. In that sense it creates the feeling of "It could've been anyone" who did the deed of blowing the space station up.
Its also not entirely made clear if Vader lost on purpose or not, as he quite literately got up after his defeat like it was nothing. Even he didn't lose on purpose he did try to avoid killing Luke, which is already a handicap and Luke did train for some time in order to overcome his father. Ironically, you could argue this with the Kylo vs Rey fight as well, that Kylo didn't aim to kill Rey, therefore she had a handicap. Issue there is that Rey had no formal training to begin with. Meaning Kylo should've been able to toy with her as Vader did with Luke on Cloud City.

Hevy two handed weapons are to some extent unaprecheated and underestimatet. Reach and heft of quaterstaff alow its user to simply overpower sword users. As long as staff Rey is using would be made of material uncuttable by lightsaber Kylo would have to either dodge every blow or defend himself with force powers alone becouse momentum behind (for example) overhead blow would definitely break gard of any sword user (especially lightsaber user) due to said sword's low weight and becouse of it relatively low stopping power.
Lightsaber suffers even more as it lacks metal blade that would add mass.

As I've been saying for several years, the fundamental problem with the trilogy is that Luke should have been her mentor in 7, as intended in the Lucas treatment, but they kept Luke out so he didn't overshadow the new characters, and wanted Harrison Ford in the movie, knowing he would only agree if Han got killed off.
So the biggest fails come from commercial decisions not story ones.

One simple answer: Lucas wanted to tell an interesting, fascinating story. Disney wanted Money as quick as possible after buying Lucasfilm. The first Movie needed more than 5 years develop, then there were gaps of three years between. Same with the prequels.
Disney wanted to have three years after buying Lucasfilm a new star wars movie every year. And Michael Arndt, a very good writer indeed, got fired because he needed too long to write a good story. But a fascinating story needs time to be developed. But that's not at all what the producers were after.

So the galactic empire was dismantled and the new republic is now the supreme power, yet in their infancy and beset with bureaucracy they arent able to defend themselves from the big scary First Order. Enough so that Princess Leia (who would be a major influential power for her role in defeating the Empire) would have to create a fringe rebel militia to fight on their behalf? Why on earth did the former rebel alliance, who are only a generation removed from their victory so pathetic militarily that they couldnt handle an upstart threat? Having Asohka mentor and leave her and Jakku and not coming back could’ve given Rey serious abandonment issues. It could’ve given her the bitter angry edge that is the temptation to the Darkside which of course we all want to see from Star Wars movies. So when she has the chance to leave, she doesn’t want to. When she has the chance to train, she resists. When a wise Jedi master, such as Luke, gives her sound counsel and advice, she’s not inclined to listen to it.
Her lack of skills and her emotional shortcomings would’ve given her all the relatability people needed to warm to her instantly. Rey could have been a truly awesome protagonist for the new trilogy. I remember when Ahsoka first arrived in the star wars universe, she was purposely made to be a bit annoying, a young padawan who hated being treated like a child, bossed around, and being told she wasn't ready(similiar to Luke in some ways as he was held back from what he wanted to do). It didn't help that Anakin was not prepared for her arrival mentally and spent their first mission constantly bickering. Through out the movie(Or three episodes put together) they continue to bicker but they work things out. Ahsoka even fight Ventress for a couple seconds but gets saved by Anakin. Later she takes on three Magna guards, which is the craziest thing she does the whole movie, she doesn't do it cause she wants to, but because she has to and she is on the defensive almost all the time. She got lucky when she fell down a sand dune and briefly was able to escape the trio of droids allowing her to get the drop on them and instantly kill one, then still struggled with the other two. When it was finally over she was exhausted and fell to her knees and was almost too slow to catch up and save her master from Jabba who thought they were trying to kill him and his son.
Later episodes would have her continue to show alot of defiance and over confidence as she learned how war was really like. Her over confidence and not wanting to follow orders made her lose her nearly and entire squad of pilots, and nearly got an entire star cruiser destroyed and Admiral Yularan nearly died. She felt horrible and immediatly began to question if she was good at leading. Eventually Anakin devises a plan to win the battle while letting Ahsoka take over and win the day getting her confidence back.
She also nearly was killed on Felucia when she refused to retreat when she refused to see the whole battle field, she was 'winning' where she was and didn't realize she was about to be surrounded and was punished after being narrowly saved.
She also tried to face off against General grevious, but this was because her clone troopers would have been killed by him had she not stepped in. She was never on the offense once in that fight and briefly escaped him a couple times before finally barely making it to a ventilation duct and escaping for good.
Ohand one directly at Rey, Ahsoka, who had been learning the ways of the force for her entire life learned the mind trick and despite her years and years of learning the force still wasn't able to nail it first try, she sort of succeeded but forgot to make sure her friend could pass too. And it was implied by her padawan friends reaction to knowing this that padawans aren't even suppose to know how to do this, but Anakin is a more unconventional teacher and probably gives her some leeway at times.
Notice a pattern, she is young, confident(overly confident) and flawed, and yet most fans ended up liking her. Outside of maybe the Magna guard fight where she struggled and was exhausted afterwards, there's no real "Mary Sue moments' she isn't 'just awesome' she screws up alot in the early seasons, and she is even punished for it with one of those examples(Which connects her to the plot of the episode but whatever)
The only moment I can think of where she kinda overstepped her 'awesome' rating was the first Malevolence episode where she could seemingly track down where Plo'Koon was through the force, but it's explained she has a childhood connection to him, and possibly implied that Plo might have been reaching out with the force to try and be saved as well.
I think Ahsoka was handled very well, she screwed up she wasn't 'just awesome' at everything she did. Rey is a Mary Sue, and I think that undeniable. She had a bit of a rough start, the fanbase was divided but she earned the respect and admiration of the fanbase through good character development and writing.

@dislike bot Why would Rey have such a conflict in the first place? This conflict makes sense in the context of Luke because he was an aspiring Jedi, and presumably being tempted by the Dark Side is a conflict all up-and-coming Jedi must face. Metaphorically, it represents facing your own demons.
However Rey was *_NOT_* an aspiring Jedi; she had no motivation to become one, nor does she give any indication that she wants to be one. She just has a mastery of the Force because.....reasons. In fact, it's not until midway through _The Last Jedi_ that she expresses a desire to be trained by Luke. Once more, she has no reason or motivation to become stronger. She's already beaten Kylo Ren by this point, remember? So it makes no sense that Rey would be grappling with the same inner conflict that Luke was. Why would she find anything about the Dark Side tempting? She doesn't even find the GOOD SIDE tempting...

      @dislike bot you again ?

    • @sixstanger00
      @sixstanger00 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@dislike bot Here's the thing though...her conflict in _The Rise of Skywalker_ is *_AFTER_* her training in _The Last Jedi._
Once more, we still have no clear motive as to why she wanted to train as a Jedi. The bigges problem with her character is that her entire "arc" was resolved by the end of the first film - she started out as a scavenger on Jakku, befriended Finn, escapes Jakku to go on an adventure, realizes she can use the Force, and in the climax faces off with Kylo Ren (who at the time, was meant to be this trilogy's Vader). She beats Kylo Ren in a lightsaber duel, saves Finn, and the First Order's super weapon is destroyed. At this point, there is nothing else for her character to do.
She has no reason to train with a Jedi Master because she's ALREADY a master. She beat a skilled Sith on her first attempt with no formal training of any kind. So what *_improvement_* does Rey need?
In Luke's case, he was not a Jedi master by the end of _A New Hope,_ which is why he trains with Yoda in _The Empire Strikes Back._ Likewise, Luke does not face Vader until TESB, and even then, his training is incomplete and he gets beaten. So even at the end of the second film, Luke's character still has room for growth; he has not bested Vader, nor has he mastered the Force.
I say all of this because Luke's conflict with the Dark Side is multi-layered:
      1) He is brash, and often let's emotion influence his judgement
      2) He has a tendency to give in to his anger/fear, as shown in TESB.
      3) His father is Vader, who represents the most tempting offer of all -- Vader offers him a place at his side and the two of them ruling the galaxy together. Thus, the only way he can be with his father is by turning to the Dark Side.
      4) Luke aspires to be a Jedi like his father, and is faced with avoiding the same fate as Anakin.
      Now let's examine Rey:
      1) Rey is also brash and sometimes lets emotion influence her judgement, but she is not an aspiring Jedi, so this doesn't matter.
      2) Rey seldom exhibits fear or anger, so she seems to already have mastery of these emotions. Again, this is neither here nor there since she is not an aspiring Jedi.
      3) Rey has no family ties to Luke, Leia, Han, Kylo Ren, or Snoke. It's only revealed in RoS that she is the granddaughter of Palpatine, but unlike Anakin, Palpatine has no noble Jedi past.
      4) Rey has no reason to "be like Palpatine," because everything she's ever known about this character is negative. Palpatine is an evil Sith Lord, many times more malevolent than Snoke. If anything, this revelation should only reinforce her decision to not turn to the Dark Side.
So while Luke has real reason to turn, Rey has no reason to be tempted by the Dark Side. In fact, she spends much of TLJ trying to convert Kylo Ren back to the good side, so clearly she has already decided that the Dark Side is evil. Rey is not thirsty for power, so there is literally no reason for Rey to be any conflict with the DS.
As I said, her character arc was over by the end of TFA. If Kylo Ren had beaten her, she would've had reason to seek Luke's guidance. If Kylo Ren had been revealed to be her brother, she would have reason to join the Dark Side.

dizzyizzylizzie I would legit read that. Whatever amount you have written.
I've been bouncing around ideas for how TFA could have *not sucked* while trying to keep most basic elements of the setup intact. In this, Han isn't pathetic and doesn't die until XIII (TLJ doesn't exist), Luke isn't a murdering angsty hermit, Finn and Poe team up for the B plot, and Rey was raised by a former youngling who escaped Order 66 but dies as part of the initial setup for TFA. Rey follows her dying request to "find Luke". Leia has her own administrative C Plot with Poe and Finn in which she isn't the demonstrable and weird idiot she is portrayed as in Disney Wars.

@@StarWarsomania warning: still killed Han in that fic, spun the Starkiller patricide decision as something Kylo/Ben did not out of wanting to be evil (though that was Snoke's intent) but because in his own twisted way he believed it was better to kill his beloved father now than let him go back and be the hero to a galaxy that never really appreciated him or it's other heroes and politics would just use him to their advantage. Part of the tragedy is that it's not a totally illogical presumption since Luke in that story left after the New Republic tortured him cause certain factions didn't believe what happened at the Temple and hated him from the start just for being Vader's son. Was trying to find ways to rationalize TFA back then, TLJ hadn't come out yet so I was hopeful for a tragic explanation for Kylo that wouldn't make his parents sound evil.

how they could have showed her skills and made it "remotely" viable:
There is a crashed star destroyer on the planet, have her seek refuge from a storm in it, she finds a pilot training program that partially works and she goes back to it constantly and learns some piloting skills from that. Then show a scene of her trying to adapt her flying "skills", applying scholastic knowledge to experience and how they never truly match up. Show her adapting and overcoming.
Mechanical skill? show her scrounging up parts from things to fix her bike and give a scene talking about her bike and how she has to constantly keep it running.
But no, they wanted to relive the magic of star wars without honoring it with a nice big handful of modern socio-political grand standing. These simple fact prevented any character growth and genuine character creation.

supposedly there is something like this in the novels. Yes, you have to do homework and read their books to get the story the movie should have been able to show.

You dont even have to show her funding them. During the meal scene just SHOW her practicing katas, shooting, or watching "How to Fly" holocrons...

I'd take MauLer's recommendation as well, have her in the process of building her own personal ship (to seek out her parents?). Have her fly that out into space and run into Han and Chewie aboard the Millennium Falcon and skip all that nonsense.

@@rolkflameraven1483 While I cant argue the veracity of the novel claims, so ill just take your stance at face value. My point is i ought not need to do homework or move between different mediums to make a coherent story. In my eyes, even movies based off of books are separate entities to their novels, specifically because they often omit, embellish, or create events to feed a practical need for the movie format. LOTR Trilogy omitted Tom Bombadill, made Helms Deep a major battle (when in novel its mostly glossed over).... i could go on, but i think my point has been made. You cant expect your audience to have surrounding source material before even watching the film unless it was explained in a connected medium (book to book, movie to movie).

Not only Rey Skywalker is the most powerful duelist and fighter. Obviously the most powerful force user with unmatched potential too. She is also the best starship captain, no can’t compete at her level and match her natural talent and skills.
Why do people underrates Rey Skywalker for no good reason, although she is the greatest character and part of the masterpiece of the sequel trilogy?
Rey Skywalker is in fact the greatest Skywalker, but also the greatest and also the most powerful Star Wars character, in general and also in terms of writing. Rey is also considered to be one of the most powerful character in fiction, some experts say she is levels above the One Above All. Her character’s writing and arc are considered to be one of the greatest outside of Star Wars, but also in cinema or all of stories.
She is considered to be one of the greatest and most iconic characters in cinema, even more iconic than Darth Vader by infinite times which makes Rey Skywalker the most iconic Star Wars character and Disney princess.
Although according to experts that she’s the most powerful character and not only in Star Wars, but in fiction, her insane struggles and greatest upbringing or backstory to the most tragic character that would make any famous and well-known Ancient Greek story-tellers cry and admit their greatest tragic stories, or story as a whole in general are nothing compared to the story of Rey Skywalker (more difficult than the rest of Star Wars characters and rest of characters in all of fiction) makes her the most relatable character and hardships to become a Jedi is insanely difficult and especially trying to resist the dark side.
Rey Skywalker’s potential is greater than Anakin’s power and full potential. She is not only the greatest leader and candidate for woman empowerment, she is the only embodiment for it.
Instead of fighting who is the best and greatest character in Star Wars. Or also the greatest trilogy in Star Wars. Let’s all admit and say the real truth and reality, Rey Skywalker is in fact the greatest masterpiece of a character in Star Wars and the sequel trilogy has the greatest movies in Star Wars.
Also, the sequel trilogy in Star Wars are the greatest trilogy in all of cinema, and considered to be greater than the Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Even the experts and the best or legendary directors such as George Lucas, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and etc considers the all the three movies of the sequel trilogy in Star Wars are the greatest movies in history.
Please no more fighting and bashing other characters, especially Rey Skywalker to say your favorite character is the best, especially Darth Vader or Anakin Skywalker whom Rey Skywalker the real GOAT is infinite times better as a character in writing and relatable, and also more powerful.
