People will probably stand in line to tell you "carbon can't be fixed" or "you're going to die first ride out". Don't listen to them. I did the same repair on a Roubaix and then put another 5k miles on it without issue. I've also repaired cracked steerers and those have also not killed me. Anyhow, really enjoyed the video. Think your repair looks great. And don't listen to those who haven't actually done carbon repair.

I talked with a few friends that know carbon and they said it was not a significant break. That an insert is not needed. So yes I am hoping for the best. Going for second ride today. hills so I will get to beat on that a bit.

you did ok until the sanding. keep tape just outside the repair while sanding, it will protect from over sanding past the repair. clear box tape works fine, masking tape will get ruined while sanding. also use something to back the sand paper to get more evenness, foam sanding block, only because the frame tube has some curve, if it were straight use a straight edge. trying to sand a carbon repair evenly to transition to the original frame is near impossible especially when youre just using sand paper. and as you found after the paint you could see inconsistencies. also not sure if your shrink tape was perforated, that will help excess resin escape, otherwise poke holes after you shrink it. but for something like this shrink tape isnt necessary, wrapping it in scotch tape will give it more than enough compression more so than shrink tape depending on how you apply it.

    Ultegra crank snap? Thats crazy.
It doesnt look too bad other than the paint coming off at first, but that coin ping definitely makes you wonder otherwise. With some delam possibly starting in the top layers, great call getting it sorted and nipping a potential crack/failure point in the bud.
By the way, did you sand all the way around to a similar depth in that band around the dent?
I also wonder how doing subsequent passes after the first one and sanding in-between would work, depending on the extent of the damage, and weighing effective strenght gains towards thickness added to the concerning area..
Basically I have a couple inches top layers crack running vertically right along my front derailleur mount that the previous owner kindly added to this giant tcr frame (probably due to jamming the chain and having it yank into the FD cage and pivoting it towards the seattube and ripping it) and i'm considering going this route. Crack didn't fully penetrate i checked, yet the FD is impacted and gives a little if pulled on.
Otherwise Plan B i have prepared a steel L bracket matching the inner tube profile (endoscope) to insert+epoxy in order to bridge the entire area at the cost of two extra bolts at the backside of the tube + some surface work lol.
Anyway great job, super informative and all the best with that top looking repair!

Cover the chain and drive train! That dust will get into them and cause extra wear

That’s a nasty repair . I counted 4 layers after you sanded. I hope it holds.

I have just about 3K on it this summer in hills and intervals. I am happy with the repair it did. Hopefully that helps.

Watching as a wheelchair user with a carbon tibre chsir and a second im about to pick up that was reduced heavily as its got a crack in the carbon fibre and so far only have pictures of said damage so im in learning mode. My current chair has a few dinks in it that im hoping i can fill with epoxy, if there is no dead sound and the carbon fibre appears intacts (for a dink) would chipping out the milky area and filling be enough? Im expecting to need to do a full repair on my new chair but thankfully the break is on the bar on the backrest and not really a load bearing section so im hoping a diy repair will be enough. Then to protect it i expect to use silicone tape or self amalgamating rubber tape. I use handlebar tape to protect the hangars as its cheaper than anything aimed at wheelchairs. Sort of a £10 cost vs £175 for 2 fabric and velcro things from the chair company.
Thankyou for the video, its been really useful and fills me with a little confidence too!

Just doing epoxy will not work. I am not a pro by any means but you will need to wrap the carbon in epoxy like a sleeve around the affected area

I believe that is just heat shrink tape. Places like amazon will have it.
