I remember when I lived in the Islands in the 80s, and I would Hitch Hike around Oahu. On many occasions, a car would pull over and and I would run up to the car only to freak out a car load of Japanese tourists pulling over to take pictures of the Mountains.
Hawaii has a variety of Asian people, Japanese isn't the only one. Filipino, Chinese and Native Hawaiians are right up there as well. And according to the other person who posted here there are also Korean, Vietnamese and Pacific Islanders from other islands. I am not Asian, but where I grew up was a highly Asian mixture. "They are not all the same".

I've been there a lot on business. The best way to enjoy Hawaii is to make friends with locals who will point out all the best "off the beaten path" restaurants and things to do. I'm only addressing Oahu. I discovered local bands like Hapa, my favorite. Love the music, love the feelings it evokes. I've done all the touristy stuff, too. Go to Pearl Harbor and feel how sad it still is after all these decades. At Aloha Stadium you can enjoy a massive flea market, one of my fave things to do when visiting. Go to the North Shore to Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach and watch the surfers ride the biggest waves you've ever seen in your life. I've been to Maui but it's not the same vibe as Oahu. Maui is full of Californians who are high and it's kind of sad. Much more fun on Oahu.

Plus I’m a good free diver. But my experience surfing was I was “in the wrong spot white boy!” And on the plane ride home I endured a lecture by a ‘native,’ explaining why white people had no right to live on Hawaii and that tourism was unnecessary to sustain the people living there. Again, just my experience, yours may differ.

So racist so funny. I lived there in the '60s, my dad was navy and so many Japanese teachers. It was multi cultural and I loved it. All these people came to do the sugar can fields, and they created type of pigeon language that they could all understand except for the managers on the fields. You can find people with 6 ethnic groups very easily there.
I live in Japan and volunteered with some Hawaiians after the tsunami. They all looked Japanese! Even the shot keepers kept talking to them in Japanese instead of me the residence. It was funny as heck.
Hawaiians do not look remotely like Japanese. Im born and raised in Hawaii. I hope you dont think just because we are from Hawaii that you call us Hawaiians??? Hawaiian is a separate ethnicity. It is not in the same way you would call a person from California and Californian. That's something else all together.

Can confirm about the Japanese in Hawaii thing. It was downright eerie. We stayed in a very up-market hotel on Waikiki Beach with really swank shops on the ground floor. The shop girls were ALL Japanese and had no interest in helping 'round eyes' with a blessed thing. Had to remind myself who actually won WWII. More than once.
