    So i guess the "plot" here is:
    Mario experiences bitrot from being left in a closet for decades, so a Goomba takes him to a "rave" so he can either A) go out in style or B) fix himself?
    Maybe its slow but combined with the music its kind of mesmerizing

    Outside of potentially seizure-inducing imagery, this is an utter masterpiece in many ways.
    On one hand, it can be seen as one of the OG gaming Pastas, with its trippy and glitchy imagery all over and the narrative being told through text. Pastas like Ben Drowned, Misfortune.gb, NES Godzilla and Sonic.exe did this kind of thing, too, but not as an expression of an existential crisis.
    On the other hand, this is one of the embodiments of what can be done through transformative media. From the glitchy imagery forming various pictures, the music helping or neglecting to set the mood, and purely how this was made with modifications to a pre-existing game, this is an art form in and of itself.
    Seeing this in my Making Art class encourages me even more to continue down my path of transformative works surrounding pop culture. Yet, despite this and other comments, videos, and news articles, this fails to get the attention it deserves. If video games aren't art, then what is this?

      "High Art" and "Low Art" do seemingly cross over a lot in Horror - like how The Texas Chainsaw Massacre can be viewed as both a gritty horror film and a visual exploration of 60's-70's alienation and social disorder. I wonder if any of those creepypastas were actually inspired at all by Cory's work with hacked games. A lot of them have a distinct similarity to various .EXE games, where you just take the game mechanics/controls and strip out the game in place of an "experience." They probably weren't, but it's an interesting idea.

      @@drpibisback7680 As most of the famed gaming Pastas, aside from the Lavender Town myths, the "curse" of Berserk, and Polybius, came after this video, I would not be surprised if any of them were inspired by this. I'd think of this as the precursor to modern gaming Creepypastas.

      @SmokeTheHorsehog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@drpibisback7680 And speaking of, with the recent popularity of Mario Creepypastas thanks to Friday Night Funkin', I'd think people should be discover this old video and give it some sort of tribute.

    This was shown in a museum when I was a kid, I think. I must've been seven or eight. I remember, distinctly, it was projected onto a blank wall, and me and my dad split off from the rest of the family to watch a bit. Over the years, I've tried to interpret what my little kid brain couldn't. For a long time, I thought it was just another "Mario on shrooms" thing, taken more seriously than it usually is. Never thought it would be something so tragic.

    • @drpibisback7680
      @drpibisback7680 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This actually reminds me a little bit of Vinny's video The Legend of Sen, just where that constructed a narrative/arc with editing after the fact here it's done all in hardware. They're both semi-narrative videos based around the violent reshuffling of a nostalgic video game. The Legend of Sen is more based on horror in the vein of Ben Drowned and other glitch-based creepypastas, but the vibe is there.

    I know it’s a crazy crackpot theory but what if the opening descriptor before we see Luigi ties into Sheriff Domestic? It’s not TOO far of a leap since SD crashes a ton in the videos.
    Edit: This theory is stupid and probably will never happen. Wouldnt it be a funny coincidence if the same dude who made this also worked on the sheriff domestic animations similar to how the same dude who did petscop worked on Nifty in the past? Both of the original sources were found through music, after all.

      @@TheONLYFeli0 Jesus when did i type this? Anyway, a better theory is that Disk 7 is undergoing the same thing as is described in the video: Deteriorating game logic and content. Its about trying to grasp at the innocence of youth and childhood. When this was made it was a post 911, hurricane Katrina, Wartime United States. Being an adult in this climate with the burden of understanding the nuances of what's happening around them, makes one want to capture the feelings they felt as a child, the joy of something like Super Mario. This cannot be done though, as the memories and things that we look back on are deteriorating, as seen by the glitches text repeating "joyjoyjoyjoy" through the film.
      Essentially, its about desperately trying to go back to a more innocent, easy to understand time. But this can't be done as our memories of childhood have been corroded with the burden of knowing what the world is truly like, leading us to have ignored our childhood for too long and making it impossible to come back to its deteriorated state. In order to truly go back to our childhood, we must confront this and use what we remember to help us as we evolve into the future, because we can truly never go back to the way things were.
      Atleast, thats my interpretation! This is at the end of the day, a piece of art, so its subjective to what you take from it! :)

      "Pretentious art student shit" = Any time something is abstract. It's a psychedelic movie made in super mario, it's abstract and suppose to be interpreted by the viewer. Saying basically "there's meant to be a point but it was spoiled by the movie being bad" is such a negative and unnecessary and narrow view on something which is clearly not for you anyway
