The NES version is easily the best one, since it plays, looks and sounds the closet to the arcade original(despite missing the cutscenes and cement factory level). It helps that Nintendo actually made it instead of farming it out to some crap developer.
The older the computer, the less powerful the computer is. Look at the Apple II. Watch when Mario climbs a ladder. See how Mario and the ladder sort of merge? That's because Apple didn't have sprites and had to draw everything by hand. On top of that, they remove some drawing steps to get more speed (you mask off the parts of Mario and the ladder they they have bits in common and then restore the ladder during the next draw). The version on the Atari 800 did the same thing. Mario is fine because he's a sprite but the barrel had to be draw at run time and they left the same steps out for speed. So yes, the NES beat the others. Now try it against the Atari 7800.
Hands down, my favorite version of Donkey Kong is.... Nintendo Entertainment System. It's the version I grew up playing so I spent much of my life only knowing that version. I'm surprised the Game Boy version wasn't included here. It has the same 4 levels but then the game extends even further.
The NES version is missing the cement factory level, supposedly because Nintendo couldn't afford a large enough cartridge for it that early in the NES's life. That said, the Colecovision version has all four levels and was on older hardware, so I have to think they didn't try very hard. The Game Boy version is _spectacular_, but I hesitate to call it a port, honestly. The first four levels are there, but Mario has numerous tricks he can't do in the arcade original (like being able to toss the hammer around), and the controls feel very different. It's an total reimagining of the original.
"mom can we go to the arcade to play donkey kong." "We have donkey kong at home." *Donkey Kong at home* : 0:02 Also, you did not emulate the Dos version too well, you ran it too fast.
I've notice that people always blame the Super Mario Bros. movie and the CD-I games for making Nintendo overprotective of their IPs,when these awful Donkey Kong ports would've easily convinced them not to let other developers use their characters.
These weren't terrible ports by any stretch. You have to remember the context: you simply couldn't get arcade-perfect ports on late 1970s/early 1980s hardware. The Atari 2600, Intellivision, and Colecovision ports were _amazing_ for the time, and everyone treated them as such. Heck, even the NES version had to make sacrifices to get the game ported: it was pretty authentic in terms of graphics and sound, but it omits a whole quarter of the game entirely. There were some legitimately terrible arcade ports in that era (the Atari 2600 Pac-Man is rightly remembered as godawful), but officially licensed Nintendo ports tended to be the cream of the crop. Nobody in their right mind would have been disappointed with any of these DK ports in the early 1980s.
Sean Daugherty The Intellivision and 2600 were made graphically inferior on purpose to make the Colecovision versions look better, however, they still played well. The NES port was also good, but it took a Wii version to get Arcade perfect levels and content
At the time, the Atari 2600 version was considered awesome. It cant be expressed just how exciting it was to play an arcade game at home. Just like people that grew up after the 80's wont understand how also exciting it was to got to a store and get an actual movie to watch at home.

+Jinzo Clash Back in 1982, Colecovision seemed to be a great port. But today, the Famicom port from 1983 looks SO MUCH BETTER!!! Today I have to say: 3 perfect stages are better than 4 mediocre stages. Of course, in 1983 I never heard about Famicom. When NES came out here in germany in 1985, I was in a complete different universe filled up with Atari ST and Amiga.
The Atari 2600 version,i have only three (non)questions... 1.When jumpman (Mario's first name) goes on a (The thing he climbs on it,i dont remember his name) it seems like Jumpman has so much hair! 2.The barrels when they roll, thet look like some homemade cookies. 3.Everything is pixelated very bad compared to the nes version. And some review about the Dos version: 1.Jumpman runs like Sonic 2.Why Donkey Kong is a pink boogeyman? 3.When Jumpman climbs on (I dont remember his name) his arms are very long 4.The game runs more faster than my Computer!
Boo for only showing level one and not comparing which consoles actually got all of the levels or if they're in the right order or not. Also boo for not showing the actual arcade version.
in my opinion, a real comparison between these versions would include showing the other boards/levels besides the first one. some games cut some of the levels out etc. that's where a lot of the comparison should focus..
They say, the Atari 2600 & Intellivision version were made by the same guy who works with Coleco & he purposely made both versions to look bad so he can make the Colecovision version to look good.
great video, never saw commodore or apple versions before. before the NES version, the best clone was Donkey King for the TRS-80 color computer. I will post a vid of that version.
Nice video; I was thinking that the Ocean C64 version moved quicker than the Atarisoft C64 version, then along comes the DOS version and Mario zips about like he's got a rocket up his arse!
On the Intellivision version, the way Kong's arms are shaped when he's standing still makes it look like he's got no arms and just a giant, stupid, hillbilly grin for a body, complete with buck teeth. Also, did they really hafta make him puke green?
The Colecovision was THE OG "GOOD" version. Too bad the NES version was missing the Cement Favtory level. I can't believe the Intellevision version is THAT bad, I think it's worse than the 2600 version, a feat which I thought unbeatable.
The NES one is the most faithful, but theres also some good ports in there too. *...But let's just leave the Dos version and the Apple II version out of this.*
The DOS version is nightmare inducing and the Apple II version makes Mario look so depressed lol.
they also start "grinding" your ears.
THE AUDIO IS SO FREAKING TERRIBLE!!!

Well apple II was from 1977 and dos is from faken 1983
@@Woomiasty no ms dos is from 1981

Holy SHIT he flies in DOS.
probably because it's cpu timed so it's going to run crazy fast on modern hardware unless you simulate a limited cpu

Jumpman was hauling ASS in the DOS version. XD
Wait is mario even lossing weight
I think the DOS version didn't get the point.
