He did a technique for the sound called "pen point percussion". He drew on the right side of 35mm magnetic sound film. Here's the video: th-cam.com/video/Q0vgZv_JWfM/w-d-xo.html
Kanadianas Crazy to think that you wrote this comment, unaware of what was to come next. At that time 2019 was too far off in the future to even think about, and yet here we are... with a random stranger writing a long ass reply to a random comment you made almost a decade ago. Lol ik this is random, but it’s crazy to see bits and pieces of the past and think abt how different it must’ve been.
DrRestezi lol I don’t rlly watch this daily or anything but i do see the occasional comment. hope ur doing well in these stressful times, 7 months ago I would’ve never imagined the world would’ve ended up like this. But hey, ur here! Nice to see ya😂
its amazing how he actually drew on the film and made these dots and stuff appear. He even drew his own audio track by drawing an audio line onto the film. theres another guy named pierre drouin who used needles to poke film and make a sort of grid picture. i dont think any of his stuff is on youtube, though.
This man definitely new what timing was, i'm an animator and have many resources now to help with timing he didn't have. He's awesome! love begone dull care, so well done, its my fav
Just in case anybody wants to see Drouin's work: his name is Jacques Drouin, not Pierre, And there's tons of his stuff here. Start with "Mindscape", it offers a good introduction on Drouin's work. Apparently his main animation technique is through "pinscreen" which is actually sand on a back lit glass pane where the movement of the image is created by moving small amounts of sand (with a pin) in order to get a general movement frame by frame. It would be nice to be able to do this with pixels ^^
impressive, when you know that every sound was made by scratching the audio-track, master of mechanical/technical expirimentation whith the celluloid medium

im investigating this right now and yes, this was one of the inspirations for synthesizers, but they were created over 20 years after this was made! this man was REALLY ahead of his time
Tudo. Porém me lembra SOPHIE.
@leongeyer well, actually yes, but it always sounds presumptuous and cerebral. This sounds like the result of an inspirational process, and that's what's touching about it...
@foketesz : actually isnt for the means it is made. But yes to aesthetics - when do you think appeard abstract music? 1990s? have you heard music of the time here first electric means where used? Even before that years
@GeoCloset You know, I've been looking, and I can't find anything either. Maybe I have the name wrong; I know I read a little thing about him in this DK book. If I get anything, I'll let you know.
Can't believe how advanced this was for the time. Sounds like legit electronic music hahah

The guy invented electronic music in the 40's

Is anyone watching this right now? I mean RIGHT NOW! Cuz I shure as hell am.
DrRestezi lol I don’t rlly watch this daily or anything but i do see the occasional comment. hope ur doing well in these stressful times, 7 months ago I would’ve never imagined the world would’ve ended up like this. But hey, ur here! Nice to see ya😂
micro-click minimal-house,
70 years before it even started =)
This could easily pass for a Minilogue video haha!
this is micro click minimal experimental, but it has no house in it
^^

Hi
the fact that this was made during ww2 is absolutely amazing

Bless you. I loved the pin screen but didn't know how to search for it.
This is really important to the creative process of film-making
peter boye yes
Telling my kids this was Aphex Twin
after effects v0,1940
This was done before computers ... before WWII. A great experiment.
World War 2 had already begun the previous year
McLaren was a Canadian Pioneer of Experimental and Cartoon Movies
How many animators today, aside from Bill Plympton, do their own animation by hand by themselves with no CGIs? This is incredible!
Probably a fair few, but I don't know of anyone else who DRAWS the soundtrack to their films.
Very interesting and inspiring stuff! Very ahead of his time. I do similar animations with modern software, and this was an inspiration.
Watched this in a modular theatre, a couple of days ago. Had to rewatch.
God, this is trippy, but one of the most amazing things ever.
Thank gorde again for Chris Knox hooking me on to this brilliant dude.
The fact that the soundtrack is manipulated film is amazing.
Knowing how this is made this is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time
the godfather of techno!!!
If you want to find ocmments that are 8 years ago, you've come to the right place!
I can't believe those sounds weren't created by a Moog! McLaren was some kinda genius alright.
absolutely a classic.
Can't beleive this thing was made in 1940. That's fuckin unbelievable.
incredible!!!!!!!!!
gotta love his stuff
Dots a really good animation! 👍
THAT WAS WONDERFUL!
So this is what early Canadian animation looked like 😍
Amazing
Geniale!
1940 ????
I loved the when the drop hit
impressive, when you know that every sound was made by scratching the audio-track, master of mechanical/technical expirimentation whith the celluloid medium
totally awesome
Brilliant stuff.
thanks!
spinnin records before its time

Norman McLaren: The Original Dubstep
Sounds exactly like my old ZX Spectrum... How did he managed that in 1940?
He did it by drawing lines on the soundtrack.
True story. It hurts to think about about it, but that's actually how he did it.
big chungus was contemporary to this
It sounds a lot like an analog synthesizer.
im investigating this right now and yes, this was one of the inspirations for synthesizers, but they were created over 20 years after this was made! this man was REALLY ahead of his time
exactly :)
Sinestesia pura!!
Tudo. Porém me lembra SOPHIE.
The first motion graphics ever
@leongeyer well, actually yes, but it always sounds presumptuous and cerebral. This sounds like the result of an inspirational process, and that's what's touching about it...
Can't wait for dots 2.
..
*headbang to the beat lesgoo

@SirSinister Yes he did. Watch the video Pen Point Percussion.
electronic music before electronic music
Thunderdome 90s slowed

Early, early electronic music!!
The Jetsons before The Jetsons existed!
This is sick
hell yeah
@jasarm
He didn't actually scratch the soundtrack into the film by hand.
SPLASH EN IMAGEN¡
Early anime sounds in the 40's
@foketesz : actually isnt for the means it is made. But yes to aesthetics - when do you think appeard abstract music? 1990s? have you heard music of the time here first electric means where used? Even before that years
Flatulence: The Movie
My thought the whole fuckin film. Lol
What kind of software did you use man?
César Andrade Nothing :)
Very interesting 😂
Amazingly forward-thinking for 1940!
Is that a synthesizer? How the fuck . Such an amazing animation job
Actually, Norman McLaren would physically draw the the soundtrack on the optical sound portion of his films!
He would draw the sinusoid ?
It sounds like farting spits. If you have seen the move Treasure Planet it sounds like that fart language.
never mind the sand part, I mixed it up with another artist: Caroline Leaf. Damn, canadians are crazy!
This makes me think of the notes played at the end of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
@GeoCloset You know, I've been looking, and I can't find anything either. Maybe I have the name wrong; I know I read a little thing about him in this DK book. If I get anything, I'll let you know.
IDM
If someone would port this onto an 8-bit computer as a demo...
1940 minimal.
Have just seen the origins of dubstep O-O!?!?!?!?!?
Looks like synth image and sound but those were not even a thing, all was made on film, crazy!
This was made in the 1940s???? Holy shit.
new aphex track dropped
what thom yorke song is this
my god
1940
sounds like electronic music
not sure whether this would qualify as electronic music or musique concrète though :D
@coffius aye - len lye I think
Is there anyone who can explain how things work?
Well you see, this was drawn onto the film of audio, and that's why it was timed so well!
the old grandstand consul.. tennis... or tennis... erm... and more tennis...
I liked the part when there were dots.
*is this the dlc of conway's game of life?*
Beatboxing before it was cool.
:55-1:10 is some proto_Aphex Twin material
