    Sterilization - Please remind your viewers that everything must be sterilized. Not just tubes and measuring cups but even the ingredients!
    I'm a hobby soaper. A couple years ago I created my first batch of lip balm and afterwards realized that although I sterilized countertops, bowls, spoons, tubes, etc., my ingredients had not been sterilized. I touch these same ingredients with my bare hands when making soap. (In soap making, sterilization isn't as much of a concern since sterilization occurs in saponification.) My ingredients could have had bacteria and I was giving these lip balm tubes to my friends and family to put on their lips! This same potential problem applied to making lotion.
    I found an informative article about this issue. The article quoted Dr. Cindy Jones of Sagescript Institute who performs challenge tests in her lab for bacteria as well as yeast and fungi. Her recommendation for reducing the bacteria in ingredients is to bring the batch to 150-170 degrees for 15 minutes. Another site recommends holding at 160-170 degrees for 20 minutes.

      Some good information! The temperatures recommended would only work for recipes not containing cocoa butter though. Cocoa butter goes all grainy if heated too high, it prefers being tempered. Took me a while to figure out why my lip balms were always grainy haha 😄

      @@astrid6496 Wow! I didn't realize that about cocoa butter. A small percentage of my recipe has cocoa butter and I know that I've had one or two batches come out grainy. That explains it! Thank you so much!

      No problem! Thank you for the information about ingredient sterilization! I honestly hadn't thought about it.

      Wouldn’t using gloves solve this issue? I’d prefer not using my bare hands anyway. (Not being snarky, just genuinely curious!)

    A good rule is to always have herb-infused oils on hand. I keep comfrey root, lavender, chamomile, calendula and a few other infused oils on hand.

    I would love to see a kit with reusable steel tins for lip balm. I'm going to have to consider this purchase. Or a DIY lip/skin winter balm would be nice!

    Hi Ann! I love your soap videos... I was wondering if I could request a hard bar laundry soap recipe, I see lots on youtube that are 90% coconut oil and 10% olive oil or just 100% coconut oil... but I'd love to see The Queen's rendition of the soap and see what oild you like and prefer for it's purpose Xx

    Looks great, although I have to say that it looks like you are using way too much Chamomile Extract. Please advise as the Bramble Berry website says .05 to 3% usage rate. Maybe this is a different extract than the one I was looking at, or a typo. Thanks! Love love your supplies!

    I suppose this was meant to be an advertisement for the kit, but I feel some emphasis should have been put on lip safe essential oils. Not every essential oil is safe to consume, and even the amount that can be used without causing skin reactions is important. Trust me, I learned this the hard way...even after researching it fully. Misread the proper dilution in a bug repellent I was making and now every time I try to use lemon grass essential oil, my skin itches!
    Okay I just read the drop down menu. This uses orange 10x essential oil, which is known to cause photosensitivity. It is not something you want to put on your lips if you plan on going outside. However, the real concern is he amount of EO used. Now I'm no expert, however I do know that the general consensus is 2% of your recipe (some need to be diluted even more. As I mentioned above, I learned that one the hard way). That means this recipe should have had 0.12oz of essential oil, yet it calls for 0.5oz!

      I would like to know too which essential oils are safe for lips. They will get ingested and they can't be phototoxic. Sweet orange, lavender, peppermint are fine. What about eucalyptus, Ylang ylang, benzoin or cardamom?

    I remember adding too much beeswax to my body butter. I made a huge lip balm. I tried to fix it but there was no going back from it.

    • @astrid6496
      @astrid6496 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL oh no! Was it too hard to rub on the skin like a lotion bar? The warmth of the skin heating it up might have helped. Did you try making it again with less, or no beeswax?

    • @stancexpunks
      @stancexpunks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couldn’t you have just added more oil to fix the ratio?? You’d just end up with more product but you can always add more of any ingredient to get things back to the original ratios.

    Is this the only way to do it? Im a melt and pour soap person and this is just my first time seeing someone not just dump something in a measuring cup and put it in the microwave😅

    How do you sanitize the tubes? Thnx

    • @TracyD2020

      Just take some rubbing alcohol and spray the bottles in and out and don't forget the caps. After you're done filling the tubs and let them sit for a while. Cap the bottles and Spray some more rubbing alcohol on a towel and wipe each tub just in case something got on them and it's better for the labels to stick and your all set

      Yes you can! I check the Brambleberry.com website for micas that are lip safe and make my own tinted lip balm and also lip gloss. They sell the lip gloss tubes also.

      You absolutely can! We would suggest using it at 10% of the recipe as to avoid the final balm being too soft.
