88-91 = James at his best. my opinion. there's something about his vocals before that i dig too, but the power, the perfect "gravel" and the somewhat goaty Hetfield vibrato all came together perfectly 88-91. Seattle Live (1989) is just insane; imagine if AJFA had that sound instead of sounding like it was recorded inside a tin can. To think he actually blew it out, or nearly so, during the recording of the black album (after everything but Holier Than Thou's vocal tracks were laid down IIRC??) yet he came back as strong as ever... but it didn't last, who would expect it to...
Imo his voice did come back after he blew it out. Many songs on Load/Reload still have that Hetfield grit we all love. It seems he just doesn't sing like that live anymore to save his voice, but on the new album and some moments live he still sounds just as badass as ever. I will use Spit Out the Bone as an example
People need to realize from 1991-93, james really worked his voice to death. From 1991, he broke his voice recording the black album. And on the black album tour, he legit would do about 2-3 shows per week or more. The tour really screwed him up. That's why 1993 sounds so weak. What do you expect from a dude trying to sing like 1989 for 4 years would be like? Untouched?
Well he didn't scream that much what spared his voice and also he adapted to a more professional singing style for example when you compare his voice on kill 'em all and the black album
Its because he blew out his voice two times. Once, when recording justice and twice after recording the black album and by mid 93' his voice started to give up on him it was too much. The overtouring, booze, and all the screaming he does eventually took a toll on him so yeah rip james old voice
It must have been torture for him to sing back then as he was losing his voice, plus it would have killed his throat. It'd be like having a sore throat that doesn't go away which would make it torture to get up and perform, as that would weaken you and your overall performance. I guess he should have drunk lots of water to keep his vocal chords moist. It would have helped to some degree.
Its not necessary alcohol , its maturing. Rob halford did had tougher voice after Killing Machine into Defenders the faith . Same if you compare David Coverdale between Burn and Come taste the band and even in Come on and get it. Its thicker Same with Phil Anselmo in 1987, the Power Metal album, the 1988 shows , the 1989-1990, and 1991 Low tenors and Baritone have often a biological transition around mid 20's and 30 in the larynx. It becomes harder, your voice got darker more adult and more powerfull. James was 21 when this came out, in 1987-1989 he was 24-26.
fuck man the Almighty James Hetfield what a voice he had think about it this way screaming ur lungs out would fuck ur shit up anyway he no longer can sing like his early days but what this man has done is amazing and he will forever have my respect much love Long live the MIGHTY HETFIELD
I'd like to see a drum evolution of all the old school Metallica songs covering one verse and chorus of each, starting with Fade To Black without missing a year as you can get performances from every year from 1985 to now, at least with Fade To Black, including 1988 and 1990.
whats so weird is theres no inbetween of pre 1988 james hetfield and james hetfield after 1988. his voice changed, his look changed, and there was so in between
I think it's unfair to say 1993 was his worst vocal year. After 2000's, he had alternated some great moments (specially in ballads) with awful performances (generally in heavy songs). After St. Anger tour, specially.
For the 1993 show you could of put the Binge and Purge show since he wasn't sick so his voice was better.. Oh well.. James needs a throat surgery Like P Roach's Shaddix did to get his voice back.

WTF happened in 2004??? That is such a shitty performance. The guitar tone is terrible, both of them are playing out of time, whoever's on the left missed at least 1 queue... jesus. 2003 was fine, 2008 was fine... but 2004 was so bad
Welp, here ya go:

pro trick: you can watch series at flixzone. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Lance Carl yea, been using Flixzone for months myself =)
Hmm.. been almost 8 years since I've made this. Maybe I should make an updated version..?
Yes, would love to hear this
please!
Todellaki
YES
Maybe?
I love 1989 and 1991.
nice bf1
gavin glass Thanks.
You not alone
They were at their peak live performances during those years
Who?
1996 is underrated
True, very true
1996 you have hints of his 1991 voice
I like ' em all
James' voice fading to black
lol
Can relate
4:39
the shadow on his neck makes him look like dimebag with his red dyed beard.

i agree with your opinion, but tbh, i would say 1988-1993
Imo his voice did come back after he blew it out. Many songs on Load/Reload still have that Hetfield grit we all love. @@dphmachine6276 Here comes revenge as well
ajfs still sounds in its tin can form, by far a lyrical and musical high peak
@@jaymz I say 1988-1992 once 93 came around his voice was raspy and struggling from the very long tour
93 is horrific
you realize he was sick during that show right?
2013 his voice was actually pretty good too

I still believe 1993 sounds way better than 1995 and some 2000's performances. Except after 2009.
Same reason why Lars would fill some songs up maybe he got tired playing the same shit over the years lol
@@royfablooo2810 Lars had also big physical issues
What's confusing is that James claims he blew his voice during the justice tour in 89, but his prime voice didn't start withering away until 1993.
Well he didn't scream that much what spared his voice and also he adapted to a more professional singing style for example when you compare his voice on kill 'em all and the black album

@@RandomPerson-ui3xv alcohol is like a weak acid on the vocal cords
´87-92 best vocals from james...
1993 Basel is sad to listen to. nothing lasts forever, I guess...
he was sick during that show

The jump from 87 to 89 is so big i can't imagine what he changed in his technique
He just drank more, that's what he changed
I think this is when he started hunching over the mic so much, which I've heard helps his diaphragm compress a lot more
Alchohol
The death of Cliff make James become a CHAD 😎👌👌👌

James was 21 when this came out, in 1987-1989 he was 24-26.
1993 is sad but true :(
I miss young hetfield
96 was the best hands down. The growl and normal voice both. I got cold chills
R.I.P Bad-ass James Hetfield voice
1982-1992
+Brandyn Vanover his voice wasnt that great in 1982
his great voice start from 1985
1985-1995*
If only he didn't blow it out in 92 on the never ending tour, never to be the same again :(
fuck man the Almighty James Hetfield what a voice he had think about it this way screaming ur lungs out would fuck ur shit up anyway he no longer can sing like his early days but what this man has done is amazing and he will forever have my respect much love Long live the MIGHTY HETFIELD
poser 1980s hardcore was the best
he still has his voice but he doesn't sing like he did back then because he doesn't want to hurt it
85 - 92 were the best as each year had its own unique touch to it and it worked with the feel of the song at that time.
What was up with the early-to-mid-'90s trailer-trash look (at 5:55)? I've been wondering this for decades.
He cut his hair because of his burns I think.
Pyrotechnics burnt his hair in 1992 and gave him second degree burns. The concert was forced to end and he had his hair cut.
1989 The Best
Honestly I like 85-89
1989 was the best year for James
1996 wasn't bad at all
09 is underrated
89- 92 is best in my opinion but holy hell, the 85 is amazing too!
God damn james had a heavy raw voice in the 80s
Why, why nobody is talking about is voice in '96? James recovery his badass voice in this time.
1996-1999 his best vocals ever
So many people think different lmao
Just about 90 percent of metallica fan will disagree with you on that one especially those "metallica died when cliff died" people lmao
Are you drunk?
@@carlos73 I mean he had the best range, control and tonality. Listen to loverman or the mercyful fate medley

92 96 by far the best two
Actually 1986 - 89 - 96 and 2000 are best.
100%
I love his actual voice somehow
I agree! That's an underrated live year.
I prefer 91/92 too
1992 sounds good in this one :)
I'm i the only one who likes the 2007-2017 era?
Yes !!!!
OVESOME!!!!🤟❤ THE BEST FOREVER!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
1985 sounds like ronnie james dio
I can do 85-87
Fantastic compilation! Great work man.
For the 1993 show you could of put the Binge and Purge show since he wasn't sick so his voice was better.. Oh well.. James needs a throat surgery Like P Roach's Shaddix did to get his voice back.
91 is the best
87
I like the 2008 one the best.
I like 89 and 2009
I like 85 to be honest.
2000 was the best
In 2011 at 12:28, sounds like Elton John did after his voice faded to black.
1989-1991
89 год самы топовый. В 92, к сожелению, голос сломался.
I love 1987 xd
Where's 1988?
85 was the best
93 is worst
he was looking his voice

he was losing his voice and was sick at that show
james in every state of love.
I prefer 91/92
1989: God-mode activated!
1993: God-mode deactivated :(
Too much touring
what happened between 1987 and 1989?
As Baritone especially, your voice mooves between 20 and 26.
Maturing its calling
2012 was shit for Lars
