You could just feel from the first track that these guys would go on to become metal legends. Especially Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. This is badass. 1982 was a great year for metal.
Those Hit the Lights guitar parts are still the most kick ass riffs to hear starting an album. Man those guys could come up with some amazing riffs and harmony parts. Few bands have 1-2 memorable riffs like that and Metallica probably has 50.
John Melton Agreed. They get a lot of hate these days but Metallica did give the world at least 4 (arguably, 5) great albums, all with memorable riffs on them. Learning to play each of those songs helped improve me as a guitarist and I'm eternally grateful to that band
Been listening to Metallica for almost 20 years now, but I only heard this for the first time today I guess the most interesting part is that the songs here were practically already "finished" more than a year before Kill'em All was released. They were only more well produced to the album, but every riff, tone, snare etc, is here. I mean, dudes really knew how they wanted to sound back then, and that's even more impressive if you think that Hetfield was... let me search... 18 fucking years old on this? Astonishing. Hail to Metallica!
@@WatchingSomeTH-camVideos exactly, Metallica with songs like trapped under ice, master of puppets, and one. megadeath with wake up dead, symphony of destruction, peace sells etc etc there Both phenomenal bands
I don't know if it cause it's the only song ever that Lars doesn't have writers credit for. But I freaking love motorbreath. And I love how it sounds on here.
The bass part is so clear! Especially on Metal Militia. Sounds great. Lololol, and never noticed the descending bass part underlying the main riff of Jump in the Fire. I like it!
Will Arterberry The bass sounded good nothing spectacular though. The drums were really solid and the guitars were great. The vocalist gotta go but his rhythm playing was great. Maybe he should stay for an album or two.
People saying Kirk played better than Dave Mustaine are forgetting the fact that this was a damn demo recorded half-assed in a garage, and those guys heard Kirk play the solos on a proper, well-produced, well-recorded *studio* album. Not a fair competition.
Kirk Hammett had to study what Mustaine did to try and copy him lol. There's no competition at all. Mustaine made metallica what it became along with Cliff Burton. Kirk Hammett just happened to be there.
Fabrice Bacquart James and Lars have always been the reason for the bands success. Mustaine was their in the early days but they did fine without him while Cliff just introduced the band to the basics of music theory but in terms of songwriting still James and Lars.
Mustaine was not the man who defines the sound of Metallica. Metallica's sound was set after Kirk and Cliff. Without Kirk's signagure solos, you cannot say it Metallica
Bjarke Andersen if they made an album with the guitar tone of Ride the lightning, The drums of ...And Justice For All, the vocals of Master Of Puppets, and the type of faster paced riffs such as the ones in kill em all with a couple of heavier ones here and there for variation like The Thing That Should Not Be, in my opinion that would be their best album ever
i like Mustaine's guitar playing better for these songs than Kirk's on Kill 'Em All, but this was when Metallica didn't have a "sound". Ride the Lightning to The Black Album was more beefy and defined Metallica as the crunchiest beefiest of the 4. Metallica and Megadeth's debuts sounded similar, because both were mostly written by Mustaine. Kirk better suits the sound Metallica made for themselves after Mustaine and the rest of them parted and took their own paths. That's what I have to say about the whole thing. Both excellent bands.
+Brett Wodon Mostly written by Mustaine? The thing is that Dave - being the insecure narcissist he is - always overexaggerated his importance as well as songwriting contributions in Metallica. Just like he regularly downplays the talents or contributions of ex-Megadeth musicians or attributes their accomplishments to himself. That's just standard Dave, spinning his stories, craving for validation and trying to make himself look grand. Dude co-wrote 4 songs on Kill 'Em All. That's it... Megadeth rocks, but Dave has always been a windbag and a mess.
You obviously have a bad ear. Dave wrote other songs that he never got credit for. He got ripped off big time. Do you think he cares at this point? Why should he? He gets royalties from Metallica and always will. Doesn't go vice-versa. Dave owes Metallica nothing. Dave's not credited for Hit the Lights. Think he cares? No. He just put out New World Order. Ending sound familiar? Did Metallica dare sue? Nope. They just shut their pieholes because they don't have anything against him, especially after the catalogs of music Metallica & Megadeth have put out over the years. Dave's songwriting style and arrangements are IMMEDIATELY recognizable. It was easy for Metallica to deny Dave's contributions early on, but time tells all. Metallica got a big royalty from 20th Century Fox for X-Men: Apocalypse... and so did Dave. Do you even business bro? Do you even compose bro? You're ragging on a guy who influenced 3/4 of the Big 4. Of any SOLE INDIVIDUAL that's influenced thrash, it's single-handedly Dave Mustaine. I'm no blindly loyal fanboy -- Dave says some dumb shit from time to time, and I pretend Risk doesn't exist, but talent is talent. He made something of himself... TWICE. How about you make something of yourself ONCE before you go bashing an elite musician.
James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Cliff Burton, and Lars Ulrich all together in one band is like a musical super group. The fabrics of reality would've ripped apart if they all stayed together and Cliff didn't pass. They would've been too powerful for our universe to handle
i think dave mustaine was right about the band having too much talent in all members for it to ever last. dave sure didn't help by being a looney drunk, but he had that leader mentality that probably would never have lasted anyway.

I love Mustaine’s playing style and The stuff he has done in Megadeth and see his important role in creating many classic Metallica songs. But still, it is better they parted ways. Kirk is a great player and his personality suits Metallica better. Still, very cool demo and a piece of history.
Well their talent compared to Dave’s talent is like comparing apples to oranges .. Dave might be a prick , selfish , arrogant piece of shit, maybe met him once in 86 when my best friend band was on tour with Megadeth and Dio headlining, he was cool and any real guitar player should tell you that Dave is one bad Mo-Fo in songwriting and a lyric writer…
I personally think they should of got rid of Lars and Kept James and Cliff and got another drummer. But then Again...Lars started it. I really do feel Dave and James without to interruption of others could of made some of the most incredible metal ever to exist
@@marklane870Kirk very much did have a style, it really showed on the next 4 albums. The kill em all solos don't compare to ride the lightning or master of puppets. Also, he did rewrite large parts of the kill em all solos too, he wanted to rewrite them entirely.
Demo from 1982 has better guitar tone than a so many metal bands today. Seriously what happened. This sounds so energetic and full at the same time. Then you get Megadeth's latest album and the guitars sound flat and hallow with not a bit of excitement to them.
He's right, this tone is great, extremely defined, crystal clear and cuts effortlessly through the mix. You don't need great equipment to make great heavy metal. Remember Black Sabbath's first album was recorded in a few hours and it still sounds great today!

@@lan_havez4110 Mustaine used those lyrics because the song was wrote entirely by him so Metallica was forced to change it when Dave was fired as he forbid them to use his music.... which Metallica did used anyway in some way.
"Originated" bro... they're the same...
No cap...Mechanix on Megadeths "Last Rites" demo from 1984 hit a lot harder than this
@@Max-eg7nx Truth
This is now an important part of rock history
You could just feel from the first track that these guys would go on to become metal legends. Especially Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. This is badass. 1982 was a great year for metal.
Beautiful solos. Beautiful sound.
The solos from here are written by Mustaine, right?
but from the version final of kill em all are from Kirk?
+TheMaverick13 the solos on Kill Em All, although played by kirk are pretty much the same solos that Dave and James wrote for the demos
The only thing kirk did with the final version of Kill Em All is change the solos.
James didn't write solos on this album. Dave was and still is quite capable of figuring out his own solos.
i think the solo in Hit the Lights is play by Lloyd Grant tho
dem guitar solos
a lot of fire in those solos
heavenhelp1982 Someone should jump into it
Haha, yeah...down in the depths of my fiery home :P
Those Hit the Lights guitar parts are still the most kick ass riffs to hear starting an album. Man those guys could come up with some amazing riffs and harmony parts. Few bands have 1-2 memorable riffs like that and Metallica probably has 50.
John Melton Agreed. They get a lot of hate these days but Metallica did give the world at least 4 (arguably, 5) great albums, all with memorable riffs on them. Learning to play each of those songs helped improve me as a guitarist and I'm eternally grateful to that band
Rest In Power Marsha Zazula! Thanks for giving The Four Horsemen a chance! 🤘
wow that solo on motorbreath!
One of the most sought after albums of my teenage years in HS.
I'm a fan since 30 years and it's the first time I hear this... Mindblowing ! (James' voice is hilarious btw)
Man, Mustaine sure started off with a bang. Ripping stuff.
The closes James vocals from Kill Em All is definitely heard in Motorbreath on this recording
If I was to know Mustaine only for this recordings, I would call him Pentatonic Dave.
Everyone was pentatonic then lol
@bhauger1 adding the single chromatic note onto the pentatonic minor to make the Blues scale does not make him a chromatic player lmao.
@@dudeman5303 Maybe not, but this does: th-cam.com/video/S6LL5iA6y9o/w-d-xo.html
bhauger1 lol thats one of the funniest things ive ever heard.
Your point being.......? That ur a 2 digs guitar player and can't make a pentatonic minor scale do magical things? I need to find a new mode dude!
Ron McGovney rocks!!!!
Here where all begins!!
its 3 A M.
the neighbors must be diggin this i see lights coming on
Those phantom lord solos cut through your life like a fucking katana
Been listening to Metallica for almost 20 years now, but I only heard this for the first time today
I guess the most interesting part is that the songs here were practically already "finished" more than a year before Kill'em All was released. They were only more well produced to the album, but every riff, tone, snare etc, is here.
I mean, dudes really knew how they wanted to sound back then, and that's even more impressive if you think that Hetfield was... let me search... 18 fucking years old on this? Astonishing.
Hail to Metallica!
Just imagine Dave and James writing the future Metallica albums............. Well I could dream can't I.
I don't think it could possibly have turned out any better than what we got. We got 2 great bands with amazing material.
@@WatchingSomeTH-camVideos exactly, Metallica with songs like trapped under ice, master of puppets, and one. megadeath with wake up dead, symphony of destruction, peace sells etc etc there Both phenomenal bands
man i love daves playing still great
DAVEEEEEE 🖤🤘🏻 the best EVER
Young Hetfield! this is gold, I love Dave \m/
I don't know if it cause it's the only song ever that Lars doesn't have writers credit for. But I freaking love motorbreath. And I love how it sounds on here.
Same here. It's an epic anthem, timeless. And funny that it's Lars only uncredited song. Hoe fitting lol
The bass part is so clear! Especially on Metal Militia. Sounds great. Lololol, and never noticed the descending bass part underlying the main riff of Jump in the Fire. I like it!
I hope this band get famous in the future
who knows, they might even become the biggest band in the world
Will Arterberry The bass sounded good nothing spectacular though. The drums were really solid and the guitars were great. The vocalist gotta go but his rhythm playing was great. Maybe he should stay for an album or two.
amazing how everything here is raw and imperfect yet dave mustaine's parts are all the way perfect
It's amazing how well Dave performed on this album considering he was such a drunk that they kicked him out of the band. (sarcasm)😂
We all know Lars wanted Dave gone because Dave didn't listen to Lars' bullshit.
Essa versão de Seek & Destroy é incrível.
Yes it is
🤘Big one🤘
Interesting that at the time, James called it "Power Metal." The term Thrash Metal didn't come until later on and was named after an Anthrax song.
Two of the most epic metal guitarists ever playing together with Lars Ulrich and Ron McGoveney.
Dave is amazing on guitar in this. He is killing it.
Killing is My Business still had half-assed sounding solos.
Exactly. also this was 1 year prior everyone else on here is much sloppier too!
The best Metallica album
+Bjarke Andersen nope master of puppets
IMO Best musically was Justice. Best sounding/mixed was without a doubt Black album.
James Hetfield make it happen there fella!!! oh & make sure y'all have enough cowbell
Best album Mustaine was a part of
i like Mustaine's guitar playing better for these songs than Kirk's on Kill 'Em All, but this was when Metallica didn't have a "sound".
+Brett Wodon that being said, Kill Em All as a whole was better than these early demos. James' vocals became harsher and screamier.
Mustaine fanboys are a special breed - neurotic by proxy.
Didn't have a sound? They fucking defined thrash metal. They WERE the sound.
The end riff on motorbreath is so heavy and so underrated
This is what I call thrash. Fast, no pause and shouting
James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Cliff Burton, and Lars Ulrich all together in one band is like a musical super group. The fabrics of reality would've ripped apart if they all stayed together and Cliff didn't pass. They would've been too powerful for our universe to handle
Thats Ron McGovney on Bass not Cliff
@@utubehound69well Dave and cliff did play together
@@Possiblyclinicallyinsane17not on this video they didnt
i think dave mustaine was right about the band having too much talent in all members for it to ever last. dave sure didn't help by being a looney drunk, but he had that leader mentality that probably would never have lasted anyway.
haha Cliff didnt play on this. Poser
Awesome

I love Mustaine’s playing style and The stuff he has done in Megadeth and see his important role in creating many classic Metallica songs. But still, it is better they parted ways. Kirk is a great player and his personality suits Metallica better. Still, very cool demo and a piece of history.
We got two great bands out of the deal
Exactly. Dave, Lars and James in one band? They would've broken up in no time. Kirk kept the band together for years
Well their talent compared to Dave’s talent is like comparing apples to oranges ..
I must say i prefer Mustaine's solo in Hit the lights over Kirk's, but overall they're both pretty good
I never realized that kirks solos on the first album were based off Mustaines one the demo, lol I always thought they were “kirks” best
Poor Kirk ...no personal style
@@marklane870Kirk very much did have a style, it really showed on the next 4 albums. The kill em all solos don't compare to ride the lightning or master of puppets. Also, he did rewrite large parts of the kill em all solos too, he wanted to rewrite them entirely.
@@thunderfox101 hello sock puppet Kirk lol
Demo from 1982 has better guitar tone than a so many metal bands today. Seriously what happened. This sounds so energetic and full at the same time. Then you get Megadeth's latest album and the guitars sound flat and hallow with not a bit of excitement to them.
This tone is sickening.
What?! A demo from the 80s has better tone that modern metal, what?
True raw tone is great, tho i still enjoyed megadeths latest album because the tone was fine to me and the songs were written great
He's right, this tone is great, extremely defined, crystal clear and cuts effortlessly through the mix. You don't need great equipment to make great heavy metal. Remember Black Sabbath's first album was recorded in a few hours and it still sounds great today!
Hello Pro Tools and technology. All comes down to two things: How you are tuning and how and what was used to record. Sometimes all of the "State of The Art" technology takes away the soul of a recording.
Amazed how Dave played the riffs!
This is my first time hearing this and I am ashamed of myself for not seeking this out.
I've been a fan for 40 years, saw them at L'Amour in 1985, I was 17.
4:23 Lol! The Mechanix sounds like the Four Horsemen sung in Japanese.
The Four Horsemen was originally named The Mechanix, but they changed its name because it was written by Dave Mustaine
+Ray Wolf Its about a girl Dave was fucking
Yeah the lyrics for the mechanix were crap haha... but hell, the megadeth version destroys the four horsemen as far as music goes...
"Imagine you were at my station
And you brought your motor to me
Your a burner yeah a real motor car
Said you wanna get your order filled
Made me shiver when I put it in
Pumping just won't do ya know luckily for you
Whoever thought you'd be better
At turning a screw than me
I do it for my life
Made my drive shaft crank
Made my pistons bulge
Made my ball bearing melt from the heat
Oh yeah yeah"

Fabrice Bacquart nope four horsemen sound crunchy and well constructed but mechanix sounds like a project that you create day before submission i.e horrible
this is a bait comment right?
Johnny Z, I don't think your persistence on promoting these guys is appreciated enough.... you had a big part in getting them noticed and putting together a record when no label wanted them.
