While the sentiment is very nice and I have experienced onam celebrations from very close quarters in south India, it's not unique to Onam. A lot of my Malayalee friends had said the same thing to me and I corrected them as well. Even Durga Puja is celebrated in Bengal by all religions and even from other regions if they are present here during the time. And I'm sure there must be other regional festivals in India which share the same characteristic. Anyway, Happy Onam. I've already made reservations for having sadhya tomorrow in my city, so super excited 😋
Story of Onam in short : Mahabali, who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, was said to have defeated the three worlds and was ruling peacefully.. Even though he was a demon king, everyone loved his impartial and generous ruling.. The Gods who were angry with him taking over, sends Lord Vishnu in his poor Brahman avatar (Vaamanan) and makes Mahabali agree to his wish for 3 steps of land.. Lord Vishnu then becomes over 10 times the size he was and starts taking three steps that included all the three worlds, and ended up stepping over King Mahabali into the ground.. As a favour, Mahabali asked to come see his people once every year.. Lord Vishnu granted that wish.. and that is the day we celebrate as Onam.. We wear traditional Kerala Saree (white with gold border, like the girl in the video) and put flower carpets outside our house, some people tie swings and play in them, have Onam Sadhya and the traditions go on.. This year, I have not made Sadhya since it is just my husband and I.. instead, we ordered sadhya (which is a thing now mostly in any good restaurants) which will be delivered by afternoon.. HAPPY ONAM TO THE STUPID FAMILY... !! 🙂🙂🙂
You'll probably have some malayalis celebrating onam in San Francisco...and surely there should be a Kerala cuisine restaurant in San Francisco serving sadya for onam
Sadhya is ❤️. I love sadhya banana leaf meal. A banana leaf meal is one of the best examples of what is called a balanced diet. All nutrients served in a platter.
Hot Food served on Banana Plantain leaf releases more antioxidants from the leaf in to the food. People who traditionally eat with hands use an age old technique called 'WTH-Washing The Hands' before eating. Use hand wash or sanitisers if needed. Having trouble eating with one's own hands could just be a mental block.
Be brave Korbin. Start practicing washing hands and eating with bare hands. 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😁 Indians eat with hands and still population is ever increasing. So eating with hands will not kill. Even without eating with hands covid killed more people per population in USA and Europe . So the thought that hands are the dirtiest part of the body is a myth, perhaps propagated by personal hyegine companies.
Sanitizers are laden with chemicals which no one should breath in, much less digest and would especially defeat the purpose of these health promoting foods.........Leave the sanitizers for the poisonous western foods, especially fast foods laden with chemicals and god only knows what kind of meat you’re really eating....it’s a great combination made in drug hell for which hospitals and drug companies are ecstatic over, lol. Long live profits from making humans unhealthy.
It is not 100% vegetarian.. The menu varies from region to region. Nowadays people try to make in an all vegetarian affair but historically it wasn't vegetarian and even today Malabar area it is never really vegetarian. Fish was an integral part of Onasadya when Zamorind were in rule of Malabar.

Onam, the most revered and celebrated festival of Kerala, is celebrated every year by the hindu Malayali community across the world. The 10-day long festival marks the beginning of harvest season as well as the appearance of the Vaman avatar of Lord Vishnu along with the homecoming of King Mahabali...Happy Onam...🤔🚩🚩🚩🇮🇳
Onam festival is also greatly related to flowers where we make "Pookalam", a rangoli made with fresh flowers. Intricate patterns of designs are made on the floor with flowers. It's beautiful. And it's believed that "Mahabali" who is also known as "Mawaeli", one among the great kings from hindu mythology visits every house to see the "Pookalam". Onam commemorates King Mahabali who was sent to "Pathaal" (the underworld) by Lord Vishnu. King Mahabali is known and praised for his kind nature. Onam festival is that one single day when he is allowed to leave the underworld and visit his people on the Earth. Fascinating stories....right?
Actually you could go to any traditional Hindu Keralan wedding in Kerala and experience the Sadya. Its not just served over Onam. Fondly remembering my college days when I used to crash random weddings with my mates for the Sadya.
The words "Ginger, Curry, Orange" comes from the Tamil language. Actually, Ginger and Turmeric are endemic to Tamil Nadu. "Curry leaves", literally translates to "Black Neem", bcuz curry leaves are dark in their plumage. And interestingly, both Curry leaves and Neem leaves are edible as well as used as topical remedies. Learning to eat with the hand is an acquired skill just like using fork + knife or chopsticks. It is easier to eat rice and Indian flat breads with hand, of course. 😀 The technique of eating a sadhya is great by combining rice with each of the curries in turn. Now imagine combining rice with a variety of curries - and the experience is taken to the next level. The neutral tasting "pappadam" and chips are to clear the taste of the previous curry... The pickles tingle your tongue and ready it for the sweet "payasam"... 😄🤗
We start the meal with a sweet. It usually is a kheer or payasa . A small amount is served first. This is not the main sweet . The main sweet will be usually Holige/ obattu/puran poli or pheni, chiroti etc. These sweets are seved in between the meal and has to be had before curd/ yoghurt rice. People in Kerala put Pookalam ( its a rangoli or simple/intricate designs made of fresh flowers (sometimes leaves), usually round but can also be in other shapes,)(pookalm= poovu+ kalam=> poovu=flowers, kalam= design) each day for ten days till "Thiruvonam"(10th day). After the short prayer everyone starts eating.
please do visit a kerala restaurant wherever you are and ask for kerala foods. you'll love the variety. both veg and non veg. a lot of influences from Tamil, portugese, arab, chinese cuisines etc can be seen added along with the traditional dishes.
Onam is not only harvest festival but we have a believe is that the king Mahabali is visiting every year. we should make Mahabali happy. so we conduct festival
