No problem, you always drove slow in those old busses. 47 HP gave you a max. of 90 or maybe 110 down the hill and the stopping distance was about 200m @ 100 kph. Either you drove very slow and careful or you did not survive that time. I drove a 69' bus in the Austrian Bundesheer for a few months. Never gave me any problems. Worked @ minus 29 degrees flawlessly. Imagine a IDBuzz @ -29 celsius. Brrr...
@@toyotaprius79 Absolutely correct, there was a substantial cross brace behind the front panel of the T25s. The T4 was very strong too and had the added benefit of an engine in the front!!
For all of us who don't really give a flying F about the old VW bus, we likely see this design differently. The dual-tone is super cool and something different and the huge front VW logo is like the huge Benz star on an Actros semi trailer tractor; a bold and shameless statement in itself. As for the rest of the design, personally I really like it as it is modern and somewhat futuristic without going overboard. Looks a hundred times better than any other work van on the market, really.

The lack of a third row when there's clearly evidence for it in the rear is certainly one disappointment. The price is worse, VW really thinks the market buzz will make up for it
Agreed, just a ID transporter. Other than the two tone colours really very little design heritage here when compared with the original. All considered it’s a neat looking people mover.

Despite its faults, I like the ID3 and if the Buzz was a sensible price then we'd consider it. I like the look of the XBUS, just a shame its not a little more grown-up and carry more people.
As an old hippie that had one - they were underpowered, unreliable, and dangerous. And I loved it (or what it facilitated ;) ;) Electrifying an old one gives you no power steering, brakes or airbags and can make it a nightmare to register and license. All the advantages can’t be gleaned from the spec sheet, or from driving it about alone. Loosen up and have some fun.
Don't know why nobody talks about Citroen e-Berlingo, Peugeot e-Rifter etc. They were available before Buzz, and very similar. I'm quite happy with my 7 seat e-Rifter that actually has three individual rear seats, not a bench.
At last! THE correct review of the ill-fated Buzz. The front is hideous. The final concept design was perfect. This one is so ugly that it looks designed for Americans. The interior looks cartoonish. The price is depressing.
I think that you are absolutely correct in saying that the styling of the concept models was much better, than what we have now, I much prefer the version shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011, it is a great shame that it was not the one they put into production. It is a missed opportunity in my view and I would love it to have the slightly oval headlamp shape and separate indicator lenses of the Beetle and Split Screen. They could easily be made to house LEDs. The main problem is that EVs are killing VW, due to ridiculous legislation surrounding their adoption, lack of demand, software issues and prices too high in view of the drop in quality of all VW products. My 1999 T4 will still be going long after I am dead and buried. The T4 was by far the best built Transporter model. Most VWs made after 2004 are NOT worth their premium price that was once, in my opinion, fully justified from 1985 to around 2004. I spent nearly half my working life at a VW dealers and a VW convertor, I have also owned two split screens, a bay window camper and had no less that 8 of the T25 and T4 models from new as company cars so I feel, in some way, qualified to comment.

Hi thanks for the very informative video. I been thinking about buying one these for a while but after watching this video and checking my bank balance have decided to go for a packet of Hobnobs instead!
The problem with TH-cam channels that concentrate on such narrow field of products is that they tend to just hype the product category they review. For example many EV and Apple channels are similar in this matter. It goes to a point where you can't really rely on the reviews anymore when you only hear praises and hype. What I'm trying to say is that it's good to hear some honest critisism for change. It makes me trust your reviews more in general. 👍
100% agree on the looks. Not even close to the charm of the original. Why? I just don't understand the lack of design chops. Will I buy one? Maybe. The options are limited. Which is very sad. Canoe looks way better, but will the company survive? Other than that, who is there? The German xbus? Will it ever make it to North America? I feel so discouraged that I live in North America.....
yes Tim I agree with you! loved the concept and still think its an awesome vehicle. lost opportunity though to be a bit more retro. and the price puts it at a very different market than the original which I find disappointing and unlikely to change any time soon.
I loved the 2017 concept, and I'm ok with the final form, but the amount of plastic inside, the poor state of ID software right now, the un-lit, haptic buttons, the lack of back windows and moonroof, and the middling amount of power, all at the price they want to charge, has really cooled my jets.
If it didn’t have the two tone paint job and a much loved iconic predecessor then it’d just be an expensive van. VW deserve credit for trading on the nostalgia factor and will sell lots because of it - in the same way that BMW MINI trade on our affection for the original rust box Mini.
I like the looks but it's definitely overpriced and lacking. 3rd row? Individual seats in second row? Optional 3 seats up front? And like you said fixed windows and touch buttons? Hopefully it will improve with next gen x
The biggest negative that seems to get buried is the price, it’s a van based car that is £18,000 overpriced! Apart from the electric drive it’s just another minivan. I do like it but it should start at £28,000 and maybe £35,000 for the top end version. I’ve been driving 100% electric for 9 years now and build battery packs etc and the excuse that electric vehicles cost much more to manufacture just isn’t true anymore, maybe a £2,000 premium over internal combustion.
The only thing 60s about it is the price. Hoping we see cheaper versions in the future. How would you feel about a cheaper, but less feature-laden version?
@@Electroheads I’m interested in the panel van version to build a custom camper van. At the moment converting a classic Vw bus to electric would be a cheaper option for me (that’s converting it myself). I’ve owned (custom built) a few classic busses over the years and if I get another rather than building a performance petrol engine and gearbox I would convert to electric. But yes if it started at £28ish k and had cost options for tech extras etc then I would make this my next ev rather than the MG4. I can have the MG and buy a classic VW bus (and convert it to ev) for the same money as an iD Buzz!
Mainly agree with the looks being bad. It doesn't capture the fun, friendly look of the past at all. It's just ugly looking. Not going with round headlights just boggles my mind.
Totally agree on the looks. Nothing like its ancestor, not as cool looking as any Transporter (except the 7 which is awful 😅). It has nothing to persuade me to give up my T5.1 stealth camper / surf wagon.
To be honest, if they pulled the window to be nearly flush with the nose I would say it's a beautiful van, but that round nose with a almost flat window just looks weird to me. At this moment the Zeekr 009 I think looks more unique and better.
For me, looks isn't one of the most important factors, but I think the Buzz is quite appealing. I like that its not an SUV. I like EVs and camping so will get really interested when the California version appears. BTW that faint background music is irritating and unnecessary.
A rather expensive 200 mile trip down memory lane. The Camper version usually come in at a 30-50% mark up which puts this van in £90K territory ! The long wheel base version might offer better value for money, bus this has the looks even it doesn’t have the range. Such a pity it’s so expensive once you add the basic essential EV options (£65K). It’s not a very good EV for that money but it will knock a few decades off a Baby Boomer once they get behind the wheel. Heart over head car. Financially makes no sense at all, but it’s good for the soul, and there aren’t any pockets in a shroud !
"Heart over head car" - perfectly put. I want to like it, and in essence I do, but I just think it's a C+ when I really want an electric camper deliberately targeted at that old school style to be A+! Thanks for your comment, Bruce!
It seems that someone got out of the wrong side of the bed the morning they did this review! Yikes! Tell us how you really feel?! I think it's good looking and forward thinking. An electric vehicle doesn't need a bonnet and the van design is much better use of a car foot print and I think the ID Buzz does the impossible and make a van look cool.
Compare the interior versatility to the multivan. Both new vehicles. The Buzz totally compromised. Why don’t seats fold flat, swivel, removable, etc? And why isn’t a single journalist pointing this out?
The analytics probably also tell you that video's on the ID Buzz get very high viewing figs at the moment. Hence the attention grabbing headline. I like the look inside an out. Of course you can't make it like an old splitty, safety needs take care of that. Plus our demands of vehicle are sooo much greater now. If they had done that you'd all say how cramped it was. The infotainment is not the best but it's really not as bad as people make out on v3.0 and above. Certainly better than the Jag XE I had before the ID3. And AT LAST we can all have updates to infotainment systems - something that drove me mad in all ICE cars of old - compare it to the 6 year old system on our Audi A1 and the new stuff is light years ahead and it can be improved OTA. You do hit the haptic controls on the wheel when you don't want to though. Full disclosure I have a Buzz on order and can't wait! :D
It's an EV People Carrier (remember those?) with a limited real-life range, and is horrendously expensive for what it is. Only thing going for it is the two tone paint. Not cool at all.
Like a lot of BEVs out there at the moment the Buzz is aspirational. In a climate of penny pinching and belt tightening, how many people can really afford to splash out 60k on something like this. It's massively over priced for people who need a general family workhorse.
Odd video. Click baity title and a presenter that ends up saying the same as all the others? It is another large family car, a square shaped SUV. Or you could say it's a people carrier which looks like a refreshed VW transporter. Jack is angry at SUVs but likes this thing which is just as big as an SUV (wider than an etron). I think people are hyped about this thing and get giddy. But it is a very practical large car/medium van. I would have one to replace my SUV...
Yep. Didn’t really find anything to complain about. As they say looks are in the eye of the beholder so that doesn’t count. Yes opening rear windows and rear ventilation may be small issue but these are just niggles.
Tell me apart from that light curve at the front, which in no way looks like the pointy sharp line we loved on the T1 van, what makes this look like the t1 van???? Take the bi tone away and it looks like a renault van. Bland and boring
For me the ID Buzz is iconic. Love the colours. Great style and as Jack says, full marks for not being an SUV. However, ridiculous price for a sprayed up van. No wind-down windows in the rear a complete makes it a 3rd-worlder in my opinion. Praise to VW to produce this flawed vehicle but they need to do better and cheaper.
1) You may be right that its not the best it could be, but I like it. 2) I guess your next issue is the rear windows? I agree. 3) Havent used the buttons/screen but I think theyre fine. Is it perfect? No, probably not. But I do find your title extremely misleading. The reviews are not all so wrong. VW seems to have gotten a lot right. And thats what people have focused on.
Built on the ID3 platform which is a car, therefore it is a small van. Good for a locally used, caravelle type vehicle but too small for a camper and with a real world range of 145 to 180 miles or so on the motorway depending on temperature and that is when the battery is brand new, , will never be a good camper van. 'Battery life' who has had an id3 for 2 years has lost 10% battery capacity and range after 2 years.
We can love the id buzz because we don't have another choice 😉 isn't the prettiest 🥴 or have nice interior 🥴 and is not cheap either 🦧 compared to T7 this look like a toy 🧸 especially in interior 🤦 but we still like it and want it 😀I wish Vw take more serious ev's (like Hyundai) but .. 😒 they don't want to compete with ICE unfortunately 🤦🤦🤦 keep up with good work 🍻
One of the biggest issues with this Buzz and pretty much all other EVs, is that soon nobody will be able to afford a new car ever again, in the middle of a huge recession.
i think the front lights look trash. looks like they took some lights from other car and put it in vw bus. those just don't look like they belong in vw bus in my opinion.
...could those who complain about no opening rear door windows devise a way to supply electricity to those sliding rear doors? Think about the complaints if it had wind up windows!
Have to agree with you, not impressed. I started saving money when I saw the concept of 2017/18 that they drove around showing off, I was ready to buy. Then this rolled off the line. Nope, just another box van. Grew up with VW vans but now my savings is going to another EV, this thing.....uhhhhh.
It's really a shame that you were lost on the way, but hopefully you find something to spend that hard-earned money on! Still in the market for an EV van?
Disagree, my family love it and we got a really cheap two year lease deal thanks to watching ‘not really a guru’ I used to have a T3 and it so much reminds of that. I suppose it’s a matter of opinion
Front End Too Bulbous - crash test safety rega tho. Ive driven a split screen an a bay window camper. And all ya have to protect you is some fabricated 16 swg sheet metal! Dont like the wipers design. 60thou far too much for a peoples wagon
Disagree about the looks - I think they nailed it. I wonder if the plasticy interior, dodgy infotainment, no rear vents or windows and high price might be an issue though.
Its been more than 50 years since VW made a bus that had real character. Deluded Dubnuts have kept it going since, against all logical sense. Its adequate plus 2%
Before you even get started...yes Tim I agree with you! How refreshing to know someone else feels the way I do about this car/van! Ok let's see what you've got to say...first those corporate lights I'll wager..... I thought you'd had a head transplant after you'd driven it there, you seemed to change your tune! You're right though, probably be cheaper to buy one of the old ones and have it converted to electric anyway. One thing's for sure I could not function with VW's infotainment screen and impossible non-buttons.
When did you sell your soul to big Vag? It's an ID wotsit (especially in orange). It does look different but amazingly it has few real extra features other than the sliding doors (at the expense of opening windows). However the biggest crime is it's utter inefficiency both battery and cost value wise - a problem in ICE vehicles but totally unacceptable in an EV. A Model Y is cheaper (can't believe I'm writing that), more efficient, quicker and when not in marshmallow white a good looking car (try it without black wheels - it starts to look purposeful). Would I have one? If the range and cost £/mile was 50% better perhaps. If not, back to the Y.
The protype did, to some point, nod to the original, but not enough for me, it has lost it's way as mentioned in the video. Not liking the childish interior either, sad, it could have been so much better.
Looks are ok, it is simply as all suvs space waster - only 5 seats in 4,7 m long car, and as such it is far less family friendly as it should be. To have 7 seats we need to wait until end of next year and get LWB. As a result it will make it heavier, so to get good range, it is wise to get the biggest battery, which would make it heavier, so more hp is needed, so logic choice is to get AWD. All of this is making ID BUZZ to big, to heavy and without fantasitc turning circle van which is faar from ideal for city. VW is so hubris not giving us this option. 7 seats, RWD id buzz for city. Adding to the list - no vents in 2nd row, only 2 isofix sets and windows which does not open are simply lazy moves. VW knows how to make briliant compact van - Touran, 4,5 m, 7 seats, 5 isofix and childseat friendly tilt for 2nd row. This is 4,7, electric platform and does not evan have 3 seats in 2nd row - only the bench - like in id 4.... being heavier, bigger and less efficent.
I have had a dislike of the Buzz since I saw its first designs & prototypes a couple years ago, it just doesnt look good, and a massive van isn't what we need in a market full of massive SUV EV's- what would have been amazing would have been an EV Bug with incredible efficiency, small size & a decent low price- instead we have this ugly massive expensive monstrosity. shame.
This though is a utility vehicle, not a futility vehicle. Yes, we need small EVs but we also need EV vans. The two requirements are not mutually incompatible.
@@philip_fletcher Sure, but I feel like we have a surplus of giant EV's with poor efficiency and massive price tags, what the market really needs is smaller, efficient & cheap EVs so more people can afford them.
So, your principal concern is aesthetic. I'm not seeing how this makes the other reviews "wrong" - but I guess it was effective click bait, since I clicked...
As someone who previously owned a T25 I quite like the looks of the Buzz, I also miss some aspects of driving the old T25, so with that in mind tried to book a test drive, not a chance, none available to test drive anywhere. I could order one but the deposit was none refundable, if I found it not to my liking the deposit is lost, there is no way I'd order one sight unseen under those conditions. Go back a few years and this would be described as a 'Yupies' car.
Not giving a shout out for the kids mining ore for those batteries? Or the fact that it has to be driven a 100,000 miles before you get a carbon benefit? It looks cool though
It is a massive shame, but I think in parts of the world where this will be really popular (Los Angeles for example) this will sell regardless of the price. But 'normal folk' are priced out!
At last!.. yes, i agree, its disappointing though in VWs defence theyre certainly not the first car company to mess up on the road between concept and production.
Total clickbait with no research on the matter. Modern security regulations exist. There's a very interesting video with the head designer of VW about the buzz on autogefuehl, maybe give it a looksee.
You are absolutely right about the design. We were promised MUCH better designs. The actual production version is just a huge disappointment. The plastic chin back and front are just the same old SUV design language you have everywhere these days. The interior is cute enough.
Seemed a very bland review, promising a another view but saying little. Given the safety rules we live with early concepts are always going to be different from the reality once the safety, style and finance teams had their input. As a step the Buzz has added another route in EV evolution. However VW need to change in some of the directions they originally took with EVs and this includes the Buzz. Better use of materials, improved charging and range, user interface to name a few.
I really liked the Buzz when I sat in it, of course it's not the same as the old ones, but it did make me smile. Heavens it would be a practical family car, loads of room for 5 people and loads of stuff. With the seats down it would be an awesome car for taking stuff to the tip. If I have £60k, I'd have one PS, please don't use clips of Putin apologist Corbyn whilst Russia murders Ukrainians, not fun
Thanks for your comment, Dragos. Look, I'm new to presenting, this is only my second feature on the channel, and I'm learning a lot. Give me a chance 👊
On any sensible metric it completely rules itself out - £60K+ and less than 200 miles real range - it’s a toy for using in the dry for short journeys. Don’t get me wrong it will sell out in the small volumes VW will produce as there are enough people that will buy it but they really saw you coming.

Not exactly a comprehensive perspective.. I think I caught 2-3 negative points.. didn’t like the looks/rear windows don’t open & non-tactile buttons..
Yeah, sorry VW but it's deeply disappointing, especially compared to the original design and even its own concept.
The Xbus is much closer to being an heir to the vw bus - and at less than half the price of the buzz... *if* they manage to bring it to market.
We really want to get our hands on the XBus! What a machine. Fingers crossed, things haven't looked good for them in recent months...
Hope you enjoy it when it arrives!
It's an EV People Carrier (remember those?) with a limited real-life range, and is horrendously expensive for what it is. Only thing going for it is the two tone paint. Not cool at all.
Only 2 Isofix seats make it unusable for exactly the crowd it targets: young families with lots of children
Bit of a head-scratcher that...
VW dumbed it down from the wonderful 2017 Concept design. A disappointment. But what can we do?
Agree, dissappointingly appointed with cheapness
The BBQ grill front intake is fugly, the 2017 version had much better styling
Still not seen one on the road….
You make a very good point...😬
Characterless next to the old one . A lot of these modern designs are meaningless. I hardly ever see new cars I can bear the look of.
So waffle opinion and devoid of facts. Good review.
Tim, loving the gold teeth.
Clickbait defined. A wasted opportunity for some genuine scrutiny.
i think the front lights look trash. looks like they took some lights from other car and put it in vw bus. those just don't look like they belong in vw bus in my opinion.
...could those who complain about no opening rear door windows devise a way to supply electricity to those sliding rear doors? Think about the complaints if it had wind up windows!
Have to agree with you, not impressed. I started saving money when I saw the concept of 2017/18 that they drove around showing off, I was ready to buy. Then this rolled off the line. Nope, just another box van. Grew up with VW vans but now my savings is going to another EV, this thing.....uhhhhh.
It's really a shame that you were lost on the way, but hopefully you find something to spend that hard-earned money on! Still in the market for an EV van?
@@Electroheads No van now. I've decided to go with the f150 lightning. Looks great and reviews are great
It drives bad, too heavy, underpowerd, no feel. But i like it.
A good start, but you could go further
Do U like the Twin A-Pillar ❓
Disagree, my family love it and we got a really cheap two year lease deal thanks to watching ‘not really a guru’ I used to have a T3 and it so much reminds of that. I suppose it’s a matter of opinion
Front End Too Bulbous - crash test safety rega tho.
Ive driven a split screen an a bay window camper. And all ya have to protect you is some fabricated 16 swg sheet metal!
Dont like the wipers design.
60thou far too much for a peoples wagon
Have you ever seen a sliding door with a window that opens [up and down]? I don't.
Toyota Sienna mini van did....Although I agree it is disappointing that it doesn't roll down.
It is perfectly possible for sliding doors to have sliding windows!!
@@TwizyMan I meant windows that go up and down. ...and not if it's possible but if you have ever seen one! ...that's a difference.
~160 miles at 70 mph makes it a poor road tripper.
145 to 180 miles, depending on temperature, on the motorway, real world range, very poor
Disagree about the looks - I think they nailed it. I wonder if the plasticy interior, dodgy infotainment, no rear vents or windows and high price might be an issue though.
Each to their own! Agreed on the latter. I've watched plenty of reviews of the Buzz and everyone (including us) had steamed up windows 😬
Not liking the childish interior either, sad, it could have been so much better.
lmao i can't not seen this squirrel anymore after u mention it 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
Looks are ok, it is simply as all suvs space waster - only 5 seats in 4,7 m long car, and as such it is far less family friendly as it should be.
Let's give a shout out for them for mining for the battery in the phone you've made this comment with while we're at it.
@@Ben36363 hahahahahaaha twat
Agree the looks are mediocre at best
I switched off at £60k. Gone.
It is a massive shame, but I think in parts of the world where this will be really popular (Los Angeles for example) this will sell regardless of the price. But 'normal folk' are priced out!
@@Electroheads Some people have more money than sense.
Not my cup of tea
Massively overpriced buzz.
At last!.. yes, i agree, its disappointing though in VWs defence theyre certainly not the first car company to mess up on the road between concept and production.
Huzzah! Like I said, let's hope we get a Buzz-ier in the near future 🤞
Uninspired and bland design I think is the best you can say about it
Total clickbait with no research on the matter.
I also thought the id buzz is not much better than the eqv even tho it’s way newer
Meh
I really liked the Buzz when I sat in it, of course it's not the same as the old ones, but it did make me smile. Heavens it would be a practical family car, loads of room for 5 people and loads of stuff. With the seats down it would be an awesome car for taking stuff to the tip. If I have £60k, I'd have one
PS, please don't use clips of Putin apologist Corbyn whilst Russia murders Ukrainians, not fun
Well, to me it does look a bit like the old van, sorry 🤷🏾
ID Buzz is a very uggly car.
So all your complaints are about the looks and its character. All of it is entirely subjective... No wonder 90k views and 200 likes.
Thanks for your comment, Dragos. Look, I'm new to presenting, this is only my second feature on the channel, and I'm learning a lot. Give me a chance 👊
Like Corbyn, very unappealing. Mmmm, next presenter
On any sensible metric it completely rules itself out - £60K+ and less than 200 miles real range - it’s a toy for using in the dry for short journeys. Don’t get me wrong it will sell out in the small volumes VW will produce as there are enough people that will buy it but they really saw you coming.
Pointless! The video…..
What an odd review. Pure click bait. Total failure of a review.
