I had the same exact issue with my Lexus GX470. Due to the year and miles, I had to change the entire timing chain kit. Then not long after, I discovered that my cats were bad and my truck has 3 of them. I ordered all 3 from the dealer and didn’t wanted to take the risk of replacing one and wanted everything brand new. Those parts alone cost about $2,300 with shipping and taxes. Yikes! P.S.- the timing chain with labor was close to $1k.
There's an old trick that sometimes works for unclogging catalytic converters. Make sure your car has 1/2 tank of fuel then go buy one gallon of 100% pure lacquer thinner. Pour the lacquer thinner in the fuel tank then drive it about a hundred fifty miles. It should clean out your catalytic converters and if not try to take them off and drop the catalytic converter in a bucket full of soapy water with either dish soap or laundry detergent and let it soak overnight. Then bolt back on and hope for the best. Remember to have a 1/2 tank of fuel mixed with one gallon of 100% pure lacquer thinner. Then drive 150 miles or more until the the light or code goes off. I hope this helps someone!
@@time-a-tell If it has acetone in the thinner, it'll cost you thousands. Plan on replacing the entire fuel system in a modern vehicle. It will most definitely do damage. Acetone is an ingredient of most lacquer thinners. It will dissolve rubber and plastic. Your entire fuel system is loaded with rubber and plastic, in the fuel pump itself, the sensor in the tank, the wiring in the tank (the coating of the wires), fuel filter, injectors, pressure regulator... You'll be in a world of hurt. EricTheCarGuy tried it with 1/4 gallon of thinner and immediately had problems with the sensor in the fuel tank, but wasn't aware that it was the thinner that had corroded the wires. That was with a fraction of what Scotty Kilmer recommended. Just don't do it. Take the cat off and submerge it completely by itself in the thinner. Then move to dish soap to remove the residue from the inside of the converter.

It's a good possibility that you did what I did to your vehicle. Overheat and cracked the head gasket. Now when I start it, it has a faint smell of antifreeze coming from the tailpipe.
It looks fuzzy because you have a fingerprint on your lens... happens all the time... just wipe it down with lens cleaner, or alcohol wipes, or even microfiber clothes..... I recommend cleaning it well, then covering it with a clear piece of masking tape (sizing it first, then use your shirt before hand to just wipe it down whenever, then if it gets scratched, just use remove the tape, and replace with a new one, thoroughly cleaning your lens again before applying a new piece of tape...
Hope you can suggest what I need to do. I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt that is idling roughly, hesitating, and running at a sluggish pace. I had the spark plugs replaced; the problem is still there. The Check Engine Light is on, the car will cut off at times and need to be restarted. A few times the C.E.L. flashed on and off, and to steady it, I stayed on level streets and avoided congested areas as much as possible. I am suspecting that the catalytic converter has gone bad and needs to be replaced. I would like to keep the car as long as I can. It's just this issue that I would like to have remedied. What do you think? Should I go with an aftermarket converter?
I had a problem with power on my car for the longest... I tried some of those cataclean product but none worked.. What did work was sucking up seafoam into the engine as it was running though a vac line... Was able to get much more power and car ran better than it had in years... ( Although I ended up still having to replace the cat because I couldn't pass smog test and downstream O2 was showing bad cat readings no codes tho...)

It depends. Cats can fail in multiple ways. If there is physical damage to the catalyst, that itself could be creating an obstruction. If the catalyst is dirty, it will run with reduced efficiency, and you can clean it up OUTSIDE THE CAR. Don't add lacquer thinner to the tank. DO NOT. You've likely got damage inside the cat that's creating an obstruction, which will require a new cat to replace it. If you're experiencing high exhaust back pressure (sluggish performance, especially uphill) I would suspect blockage somewhere... IF it's the catalytic converter. The rattling noise that you hear from a cat could be the heat shield, and most times is. It could also be the catalyst broken apart inside rattling around.

I have a 2006 Nissan Maxima , can I use a solution to clean out my cats? A tech has told me the right hand cat is likely clogged and the left cat does not have enough restriction. The codes were PO420 catalyst efficiency low B1 and PO430 catalyst efficiency low B2. Inlet temp for left cat is 460' and outlet temp 520'. Inlet temp for right cat is 500' and outlet temp is 630'. If they can be cleaned, which product do you recommend. If they must be replaced, is there welding involved during replacement or can most any mechanic replace converters easily? Thank you for any information or advice you can offer.
Audrey Sartin a clogged cat would have low temp on the outlet. The main thing is to see the operation of the rear O2 sensors. If you end up replacing the cats I would recommend buying the bolt on kits sound by walker or Davidson I really don’t like the welded ones. As for a solution to use cataclean has worked a couple of times but as well it has failed. Just look at the operations on your rear sensors

I took it to the shop only the hear that both catalytic converters are bad the platinum is gone in both of them. Should I try the cleaner or try knocking the honey combs out?
Hey I got a 94 couger. When I first got the car it start right up. Untill today it starts up but it takes it bit longer to start. When I give it the gas it back fires a bit it's not aloud backfire. So I give it the gas push paddle to floor. After I do that the car does fine. When driving it I give it the gas it dont want to go . It try's to go. Again I can pull over put it in N and give it the gas then put it drive and it does fine. Some says it's the plugs and plug wires. Or bad gas. I'm thinking maybe little bit of both bad converter and bad gas. The car runs awesome no mis it runs smooth. Any ideal what you think it is

How can you run straight pipe and have the 2 O2 sensors in the exhaust system or are they deleted and if they are deleted how will the computer respond under different driving conditions?
@Will i am If you do that it'll turn on the CEL and fail emissions testing. You need an O2 simulator, or build your own using a spark plug defouler to fool the ECU into thinking the cat is working properly. Sometimes you can wire a resistor and a capacitor between the upstream and downstream O2 sensors and that will smooth out the waveform, fooling the ECU into thinking the cat is working properly.
I always hollow out the converter on all my friends and people I know that said they need a new Catt and being a former emission station tech Catylatic converters are just a part to give poor performance and they are a power restrictor for motors ,and also the people that I have hollowed their Catt for years ago still have no trouble with passing emissions and they seem to get better emissions report numbers than before the catts were hollowed.

got a 5.3 with 247k on it runs like a dream still. I've kept up on it since I bought it. I've replaced everything in the emissions. oe plugs and wires. fuel filter air filter oxygen sensors twice in 8 months. and I keep getting a lean code then rich off and on. loss of power is there. vacuum also comes up on my scanner as an issue. I thought maybe my fuel pressure was slacking or my maf. well done tinkered with everything. you can feel when it's running good. throttle and acceleration is strong and truck smashes. however other times I can floor it and it takes off like it's in overdrive. slow and just putters away or get loud but takes forever to get up to speed. could that be my issue with bank 1 sensors going bad? and rear ones somethimes don't even register. 99.2 it says. trapped exhaust and pressure building up between cats and engine? if instep on it hard I hear a rattle coming from front it sounds but there's a car right behind exhaust manifold could it be that? sounds like a pcv valve rattle but idk???

my 2001 lesabre may have a bad cat convt. after being in repair shops in area they still could not get it right even a gm dealer could not get it right, runs ok for 20 min then wont idle, cost to me is over1000 so far,car ran well just light was on., be carefull who you are dealing with when you have this repaired trust your repair shop. i dont trust any of them anymore.
Try checking the timing, and the plugs. Before you start it take your cap off of your radiator to make sure that the water in the motor is circulating properly. If it isn't then I would change the water pump. Outside of the oil change and tune-up.
- Robert uti - you can clean the cat not going to fix the problem from haplening again any thing that can cause the vehicle to run rich will damage catalytic converter faulty o2 sensor causing rich air/fuel mix faulty air getting in high fuel pressure faulty ignition system missfire timing issues you also may pass smog by replacing your cat but if u dont fix the problem thats causing them to get clogged your next cat will be damaged aswell.
I got a 92 explorer. 5.0L just recently had some issues , bad starts turned into no start lol so I started with pcv valve and then new plugs, that went on to new wires , new coils . and it all started after I changed my fuel filter. anyway turned out to be my mass air flow sensor. I know this be ause as i replaced the parts nothing changed. put the new m.a.f sensor and bam truck was responding to the throttle and starting fine, also since it had all the other new stuff it runs nice. here's my issue. If I shit it off when it's hot it won't start again untill it cools off... ? first I'm thinking fuel pp but it's getting fuel fine when it's cold in the morning. drive it for 20 mins . shut it off and it will restart immediately but if I leave it for 5 mins off, hot.... it won't start. I then have to wait hours for it to cool off and then it will start. could this be a cat or a fuel pump ? today I noticed the cat was way hotter then the out pipe ....

You can take off the catalytic converter soaking in Dawn dishwashing detergent and ammonia and water and wait 24 hours take it out and rinse it off for really good and that seems to work

I went to go get a Smog slip on my 95 integra and the technician said my cat converter was bad he said it was just passed the point of the no pass zone and I had to fix it before I could pass my Smog. I don't think it's clogged cause there's no sulphur smell and there's no smoke coming out of the exhaust and the exhaust doesn't sound loud either. so would I be able to just clean my cat converter and pass Smog or would I need to get a whole new converter.?

A couple mechanic friends of mine offered help to check why my BMW had little power to go after stopping. The code reader said it was #2 fuel injector. They said they were gonna check if my catalytic converter was clogged on my 2004 BMW 325i. After drilling They ended up pulling out a bunch of stuff that looked like cardboard and cotton. Then said my problem was my transmission. Hey my car only has 113,000 miles on it. They did all this knowing that the codes read #2 fuel injector was clogged. I wanna know why they did what they did. Does anyone know why they would do what they did?

They drilled past the insulation into the CAT to check the exhaust pressure. If the pre CAT and post CAT are too different the CAT is damaged. A bad injector can burn up a CAT and clog it.

The clogged catalytic converter can cause your computer to kick out po300 multiple misfire code simply because when you step on the gas the engine can't push out the exhaust so the exhaust bleeding back into the cylinder will cause a pre ignition or misfire. The misfire has nothing to do with your timing or spark plugs or wires the engine simply misfires because of blowback burnt exhaust fuel reentering the cylinder or not exiting this order and causing a misfire prior to the next Powerstroke of that cylinder or cylinders.

Yea a clogged catalytic converter can cause the engine to overheat. just think about all the hot exhaust gases trying to go out but cant because the catalytic converter is clogged. it need to go somewhere. but test your heads first with a block tester. think i have a video of that aswell
I had the same thing, but I have done a tune up and oil change and now I'm going to change out my water pump before I change my catayltic converter. It was overheating back 3 years ago when I first started trying to get better gas mileage by mixing gas grades together.
@@joeyweidig938 No, it's a 2000 ford explorer xlt. I've already cut off one of the cataylic converters. I have a total of 4 on my truck. I noticed that it's breathing better, but the other 3 are still attached to it. I have noticed that the pipe itself is a bright pink color. Which let's me know that the cataylic converters are clogged.

catalytic will over heat the engine yes , but when catalytic is plugged up , you don't have to wait till the engine over heats, because you will have lack of power and engine will back fire as well.that is , because the exhaust need to go somewhere. but yes will cause over heat.

If its totally clogged etc you can always cut it open and remove everything inside and weld it back together 🤦🏽 way better then wasting over 500+ up to 1000$
Oz Mechanics I'm pretty sure the cat on my Jeep Liberty is bad (among other things). First, it has multiple misfires that aren't corrected with new plugs. I've changed them 3 times in 10,000 miles. Ignition coils are fine. But now CEL is flashing, power loss, surging, rough idle, and rotten egg smell. No cat code though. Only the misfire codes, and small evap leak.
......In other words the fix is worth more than the price of beater repair. Unless your in love with your beater junk it and buy another used beater (just put my second radiator in my Honda and one in my Saturn, both of which I got for free). I'll drive them until they or I die! BUT, I WILL NOT SPEND ANY MORE MONEY ON EITHER!!!
I know this isn't exactly legal. but I've seen many times where they just hollow out the inside of the converters. that can save alot of money versus a replacement.
+jason quinn would not recommend that. what comes out of the exhaust system is carbon monoxide CO not good for us. what the cats do is make that CO into CO2 lil better for us and the environment
jason quinn iv just hollowed out my manifold cat and removed the lower 1 and done strsight through stainless system. sounds beast and runs miles better cats are just a money maker and make ur engine run much hotter and reduce power lots. and allso use more fuel. way better removed.
Incorrect, u can clean them out it'll sound louder yes but the problem would be fixed.. People have plenty exhaust systems without cats 🤔 any car in a closed area is when the carbon monoxide is bad I know cause I suffered from it when I was real young in a house fire.. Its better then having a clogged cat so the right pressure is going through your exhaust system not backing it up 🤦🏽🤦🏽 must be a mechanic trying to make people go out spend 500$ and have to bring it to a shop for work lmao..got a 95 firebird with no cats causes no smoke at all.. Thats just all emission b.s
Scotty Kilmer video says if you have Code P0420, you can add a gallon of lacquer thinner to a half-full gas tank and drive 150 miles or idle it high for 30 minutes. Or if you can remove the cat, then you can soak it overnight in detergent. Check out his video!

Here is how to fix it: 1) Cut out old cat with tool of your choice. 2) install flex pipe in its place, 3) enjoy.

The codes were PO420 catalyst efficiency low B1 and PO430 catalyst efficiency low B2. Inlet temp for left cat is 460' and outlet temp 520'. Inlet temp for right cat is 500' and outlet temp is 630'. If they can be cleaned, which product do you recommend. If they must be replaced, is there welding involved during replacement or can most any mechanic replace converters easily? Thank you for any information or advice you can offer.
Audrey Sartin a clogged cat would have low temp on the outlet. The main thing is to see the operation of the rear O2 sensors. If you end up replacing the cats I would recommend buying the bolt on kits sound by walker or Davidson I really don’t like the welded ones. As for a solution to use cataclean has worked a couple of times but as well it has failed. Just look at the operations on your rear sensors
I have a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse that wouldn't catch after changing the number the coil. I changed all six coils and plugs and the cam sensor still no response. I took it to the shop only the hear that both catalytic converters are bad the platinum is gone in both of them. Should I try the cleaner or try knocking the honey combs out?
Jazz Hill just change them out. I've done 2 traverse that had catalytic issues. Best to get them fixed and getting them over with
Hey I got a 94 couger. When I first got the car it start right up. Untill today it starts up but it takes it bit longer to start. When I give it the gas it back fires a bit it's not aloud backfire. So I give it the gas push paddle to floor. After I do that the car does fine. When driving it I give it the gas it dont want to go . It try's to go. Again I can pull over put it in N and give it the gas then put it drive and it does fine. Some says it's the plugs and plug wires. Or bad gas. I'm thinking maybe little bit of both bad converter and bad gas. The car runs awesome no mis it runs smooth. Any ideal what you think it is

@Will i am If you do that it'll turn on the CEL and fail emissions testing. You need an O2 simulator, or build your own using a spark plug defouler to fool the ECU into thinking the cat is working properly. Sometimes you can wire a resistor and a capacitor between the upstream and downstream O2 sensors and that will smooth out the waveform, fooling the ECU into thinking the cat is working properly.
I always hollow out the converter on all my friends and people I know that said they need a new Catt and being a former emission station tech Catylatic converters are just a part to give poor performance and they are a power restrictor for motors ,and also the people that I have hollowed their Catt for years ago still have no trouble with passing emissions and they seem to get better emissions report numbers than before the catts were hollowed.

got a 5.3 with 247k on it runs like a dream still. I've kept up on it since I bought it. I've replaced everything in the emissions. oe plugs and wires. fuel filter air filter oxygen sensors twice in 8 months. and I keep getting a lean code then rich off and on. loss of power is there. vacuum also comes up on my scanner as an issue. I thought maybe my fuel pressure was slacking or my maf. well done tinkered with everything. you can feel when it's running good. throttle and acceleration is strong and truck smashes. however other times I can floor it and it takes off like it's in overdrive. slow and just putters away or get loud but takes forever to get up to speed. could that be my issue with bank 1 sensors going bad? and rear ones somethimes don't even register. 99.2 it says. trapped exhaust and pressure building up between cats and engine? if instep on it hard I hear a rattle coming from front it sounds but there's a car right behind exhaust manifold could it be that? sounds like a pcv valve rattle but idk???

my 2001 lesabre may have a bad cat convt. after being in repair shops in area they still could not get it right even a gm dealer could not get it right, runs ok for 20 min then wont idle, cost to me is over1000 so far,car ran well just light was on., be carefull who you are dealing with when you have this repaired trust your repair shop. i dont trust any of them anymore.
Try checking the timing, and the plugs. Before you start it take your cap off of your radiator to make sure that the water in the motor is circulating properly. If it isn't then I would change the water pump. Outside of the oil change and tune-up.

- Robert uti - you can clean the cat not going to fix the problem from haplening again any thing that can cause the vehicle to run rich will damage catalytic converter faulty o2 sensor causing rich air/fuel mix faulty air getting in high fuel pressure faulty ignition system missfire timing issues you also may pass smog by replacing your cat but if u dont fix the problem thats causing them to get clogged your next cat will be damaged aswell.
I got a 92 explorer. 5.0L just recently had some issues , bad starts turned into no start lol so I started with pcv valve and then new plugs, that went on to new wires , new coils . and it all started after I changed my fuel filter. anyway turned out to be my mass air flow sensor. I know this be ause as i replaced the parts nothing changed. put the new m.a.f sensor and bam truck was responding to the throttle and starting fine, also since it had all the other new stuff it runs nice. here's my issue. If I shit it off when it's hot it won't start again untill it cools off... ? first I'm thinking fuel pp but it's getting fuel fine when it's cold in the morning. drive it for 20 mins . shut it off and it will restart immediately but if I leave it for 5 mins off, hot.... it won't start. I then have to wait hours for it to cool off and then it will start. could this be a cat or a fuel pump ? today I noticed the cat was way hotter then the out pipe ....
It could be vapor lock from the fuel line being to close to a heat source.
You might try checking your heater core to make sure that water is circulating properly. That's another reason that it'll overheat.

You can take off the catalytic converter soaking in Dawn dishwashing detergent and ammonia and water and wait 24 hours take it out and rinse it off for really good and that seems to work

I went to go get a Smog slip on my 95 integra and the technician said my cat converter was bad he said it was just passed the point of the no pass zone and I had to fix it before I could pass my Smog. I don't think it's clogged cause there's no sulphur smell and there's no smoke coming out of the exhaust and the exhaust doesn't sound loud either. so would I be able to just clean my cat converter and pass Smog or would I need to get a whole new converter.?

Yea. An easy test is to remove the upstream oxygen sensor and if drives better you have a clogged converter

A couple mechanic friends of mine offered help to check why my BMW had little power to go after stopping. The code reader said it was #2 fuel injector. They said they were gonna check if my catalytic converter was clogged on my 2004 BMW 325i. After drilling They ended up pulling out a bunch of stuff that looked like cardboard and cotton. Then said my problem was my transmission. Hey my car only has 113,000 miles on it. They did all this knowing that the codes read #2 fuel injector was clogged. I wanna know why they did what they did. Does anyone know why they would do what they did?

They drilled past the insulation into the CAT to check the exhaust pressure. If the pre CAT and post CAT are too different the CAT is damaged. A bad injector can burn up a CAT and clog it.

The clogged catalytic converter can cause your computer to kick out po300 multiple misfire code simply because when you step on the gas the engine can't push out the exhaust so the exhaust bleeding back into the cylinder will cause a pre ignition or misfire. The misfire has nothing to do with your timing or spark plugs or wires the engine simply misfires because of blowback burnt exhaust fuel reentering the cylinder or not exiting this order and causing a misfire prior to the next Powerstroke of that cylinder or cylinders.

Yea a clogged catalytic converter can cause the engine to overheat. just think about all the hot exhaust gases trying to go out but cant because the catalytic converter is clogged. it need to go somewhere. but test your heads first with a block tester. think i have a video of that aswell

I had the same thing, but I have done a tune up and oil change and now I'm going to change out my water pump before I change my catayltic converter. It was overheating back 3 years ago when I first started trying to get better gas mileage by mixing gas grades together.

I noticed that it's breathing better, but the other 3 are still attached to it. I have noticed that the pipe itself is a bright pink color. Which let's me know that the cataylic converters are clogged.
And also my car when it sits and runs.. the temp gage goes up to half way. A little some what over. Untill the fan kicks on Then it stays half way.

catalytic will over heat the engine yes , but when catalytic is plugged up , you don't have to wait till the engine over heats, because you will have lack of power and engine will back fire as well.that is , because the exhaust need to go somewhere. but yes will cause over heat.

I'm pretty sure the cat on my Jeep Liberty is bad (among other things). First, it has multiple misfires that aren't corrected with new plugs. I've changed them 3 times in 10,000 miles. Ignition coils are fine. But now CEL is flashing, power loss, surging, rough idle, and rotten egg smell. No cat code though. Only the misfire codes, and small evap leak.

......In other words the fix is worth more than the price of beater repair. I'll drive them until they or I die! BUT, I WILL NOT SPEND ANY MORE MONEY ON EITHER!!!

I know this isn't exactly legal. but I've seen many times where they just hollow out the inside of the converters. that can save alot of money versus a replacement.
+jason quinn would not recommend that. what comes out of the exhaust system is carbon monoxide CO not good for us. what the cats do is make that CO into CO2 lil better for us and the environment

Scotty Kilmer video says if you have Code P0420, you can add a gallon of lacquer thinner to a half-full gas tank and drive 150 miles or idle it high for 30 minutes. Or if you can remove the cat, then you can soak it overnight in detergent. Check out his video!
These catalytic converters were too damaged. They were completely clogged there's no cleaning agent that could clean it out
