Thank you, Greg. I would still like to know if ''in order to'' and ''so that'' are interchangeable. Are they not interchangeable? In that case, how do I know when to use one or the other?
"So" on its own can actually have the opposite meaning of "so that". Consider: I wanted to pass the test, so I studied hard. I studied hard so that I would pass the test. But you wouldn't say "I wanted to pass the test, so that I studied hard." That would be mixing up the purpose and the result. "So that" is always used to express a desired result. But "so" can be used between a cause and effect. Another example: I didn't study hard, so I failed the test. Sorry to make things more complicated! Only use "so that" for a desired result (purpose).

Thank you, Greg. I would still like to know if ''in order to'' and ''so that'' are interchangeable. Are they not interchangeable? In that case, how do I know when to use one or the other?
As a non native speaker I find it very useful to know that there is no difference between
so that -> so
in order to -> to
(formal-> informal)
"So" on its own can actually have the opposite meaning of "so that". Consider:
I wanted to pass the test, so I studied hard.
I studied hard so that I would pass the test.
But you wouldn't say "I wanted to pass the test, so that I studied hard." That would be mixing up the purpose and the result. "So that" is always used to express a desired result. But "so" can be used between a cause and effect. Another example:
