    Had this problem on my 1997 mustang GT (stock 4.6L v8 sohc) I replaced the tensioner that already had a pulley attached to it and it fixed the problem. If you have this exact same vehicle do NOT get the gates tensioner it doesn't line up and will fail within a year, get the Dorman or oem one. Thanks McCuistian you are by far the best automotive channel on here!

      I have the same vehicle and I’m getting a rattling noise even after replacing the whole assembly with a duralast brand one. When I tighten the pulley the rattling stops but then comes back when I release it to its proper position. The noise is driving me nuts and if you have any idea what I should do then I’d highly appreciate it. Maybe duralast isn’t good for this particular car?

    DAMN...5 days ago my car was making this exact sound. I assumed it had to do with the belt...but most people say loose belts male a squeaky sound. But I tried diagnosing and test driving to see if there's a pattern, and this video exactly shows the randomness of when I hear it, and how it would go away. Merci beaucoup for the video, now I know that it is indeed a belt issue.

  • @josephn944

    Important lesson that bad belt assembly doesn’t always “squeak” like some believe. Mine makes a sound like this, intermittent clacking/grinding.

    Worn belt tensioner allowing the tensioner wheel to scrape against the timing chain cover.

    • @td3993
      @td3993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My pulley def wasn't scraping. Replacing the belt made the noise less frequent. What seems to happen, tho, is that the tensioner moves in jerks instead of fluidly. Going to put some oil on the spring and pivot.

    2010 Camry: Have similar rattle sound, only when AC is on. Turn compressor off and just run the blower & sound goes away. 2 AC Repair shops said it was the compressor (just listening) w/out detailed diagnosis. Around $2,000.00. 3rd garage said it might just be a bad Tensioner, which I'm hoping for. Would be much less.

    • @McCuistian
      @McCuistian  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like that are often diagnosed as a bad component - usually the most expensive one - by some shops. Belts and pulleys can make sounds that are dreadfully misleading. You did good getting another opinion after those 2 shops.

    • @waynelynch3862
      @waynelynch3862 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@McCuistian I'm still debating which shop to choose. Obviously, I'm leaning towards the shop that said it may just be the tensioner, but it was just a garage. The Auto-AC shop has been around for 40 years, but here is the latest review from a disgruntled customer: ''Total ripoff!!! They charged me over $300 to replace one vacuum hose with $40 worth of "miscellaneous" charges. When asked why they said it was for (shop towels.) Beware and save yourself money by avoiding this place. I should have known better because another customer was also complaining while I was there.. Yipes!

      @waynelynch3862 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@McCuistian That's the one I'm leaning towards but I'm gonna call them tomorrow and ask if they have done a lot of compressor and tensioner jobs. I got a good vibe from the owner of this shop, unlike the other places. He seems real honest or was a smooth talker:)
      I was concerned that he went to the online site that 2 others looked at that said the bumper/radiator had to come off. I saw a video @ utube of exact year/make of my car and the mechanic did not remove either for a compressor replacement. My guess is that would add a couple of more hours of labor, plus more chance of screwing something else up.
      Do you know the name of the website that garages look at for pricing and parts? I'm guessing it also has some instructions, since some said the the bumper/radiator had to be removed

      Its not your A/C clutch failing i have a dodge with a brand new A/C compressor and clutch and it did exactly what you described when i would turn on the air the tensioner would make a racket when i would turn the air off the noise would stop reason being is when the A/C is turned on its putting more stress on the worn out tensioner then when its turned off. • @McCuistian
      @McCuistian  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Get a spray bottle and spray each pulley - if the belt slips worse, it's a problem with the tensioner. If the chirp goes away, it's a pulley alignment issue. The pulleys all have to be perfectly in line. If the crankshaft pulley is coming apart (the outer part and the inner part have rubber between them) it can cause that.

    I have the same issue. It becomes noticeable when the AC or Heat kicks on and stops when the compressor stops like in this video. However, I noticed that slightly feathering the accelerator will trigger it again. I'm assume this is because of the added tension on the tensioner. Would this line of thought sound reasonable to you?
    Thanks in advance for any input you can give.

      The tensioner has a damper inside by the spring that you can't see without taking the tensioner apart, and when that damper wears out it does this. I replaced the tensioner on my Explorer about 2 years ago for the same reason.

But this only was with the ac on but now its when accelarating from a stop or making a turn then stepping on the gas the first 3 second there some clanking noise then goes away. Nope - not this time. The tensioner took care of the problem - people drive this car every day and it has never needed a compressor clutch... there's a LOT more to a tensioner than meets the eye - a damper inside the tensioner - sort of like a brake shoe - wears out and causes this, usually. Other things can cause it, but according to Gates, the tensioner should be replaced every time the belt is replaced.

    I brought a gates tensioner 2 months ago but it cant be out al ready. Can it?

    • @JA-rn5qv
      @JA-rn5qv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes absolutely. Gates is very hit & miss with the quality of their tensioners. l've seen some Gates tensions new out of the box that were wobbly and couldn't be installed. l think some of them are made in America and some are made in China. OEM is usually the best bet when it comes to tensioner pulley assemblies but even the OEM ones l always repack the bearings before l install them because many times they only come with a minimal amount of grease in the bearings and they usually use the cheapest grease too, which guarantees they won't last as long as they should. l replace the stock grease with a synthetic high temp red grease, then install.
