Noob's Guide to Brakes!

  • HIPPITY HOPPITY, IT'S TIME TO STOPPITY. 6 Piston Brembo Brakes DO make your car faster by reducing lap times. Take that naysayers on my Cheap Cars That Look Rich video! Also, little known fact, but Red Brake Calipers actually add 100,000 BRAKE Horsepower. Hence why it's called, "Brake Horsepower". Duh. Also if you thought 8 pistons were ridiculous, in 2007, some companies made 12 piston calipers for sports cars. However, It didn't take long before realizing pistons alone aren't what determine stopping power, so those were seen as a gimmicky phase.

    Dit you now that drumbrakes on smalltire trailers voor trucks brake better than discs. Because the have more surface to brake. I am talking about 17 inch wheels. I drive a 2019 daf with brake discs on the truck and drumbrakes on the trailer.

    • @BladedAngel
      @BladedAngel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +120

      Ahhhh, Thank you for the insight. That makes sense. Someone earlier tried to convince me they were good on freaking Semi's, but I wrote that off as economic reason. But for a small trailer, I can see why they'd be preferable.

    • @vidar8117
      @vidar8117 4 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Bladed Angel their not good for heavy transport, I work for commercial bus company and not only did drum brake perform worst than disc brakes after first application, but in long distance traveling, drum brakes generally caused the wheel bearings to overheat and wear out. (I work on full floating axles so there’s two wheel bearings). In my opinion, disc brakes all he way

    • @BladedAngel
      @BladedAngel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@vidar8117 I agree with that. For a heavy semi, they still use Discs in front, and only use drums due to economic reasons (it's cheaper to replace 8 drums as opposed to 8 discs). But the guy I pinned is making a point about small trailers. His main truck still has discs, but for a small trailer, it really would be an absolute waste to have discs on them. Very viable application IMO.

    • @vidar8117
      @vidar8117 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Bladed Angel actually some semi have disc brake on all wheels now, I’ve seen some kenworth, prevost, and MCI put them on newer vehicles, and yeah for a light trailer I can still see the drum being useful

    • @BladedAngel
      @BladedAngel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@vidar8117 That's good to hear. Thank God Semi companies aren't cheaping out anymore. I had a commenter earlier who tried so hard to convince me that Semi's were better off with Drums. I really wasn't buying it. I appreciate your insight as someone whose directly involved in the industry.

    For all these people that want to upgrade brakes at all, go for tires first. They help more with having a contact patch that wants to stick to the road. Go try dragging your toes across the ground then drag your foot, your foot will be harder to move as there's a better contact patch. That's basically how your tires work when braking

    I run legit police pads and LV dot5.1 with solid HD disc rotors it stops on the dime and last 2 years before they ever start squealing, bout 30-50$ for all four wheels plus the rotors last 100k miles easy. I use anti squeal springs that quicken and even out the piston return force too so its an all around good stopper with rubber lines and I havent overshot any stops sprinting through lights or dead stopping at 75mph downhill for a 2008 mercury mountaineer weighed down, every year if the brake fluids dirty enough I flush the brake system clear

    The best cheap/effective setup is slotted discs with standard pads. They are cheap and the slots will take care of the extra dust. Vented ofc

  • @matthewclarkson4883
    @matthewclarkson4883 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I could be wrong but I thought that the reason slotted/drilled rotors are used isn’t only for air flow but mostly to let the gases from the pads escape as they wear. As the pads wear especially under heavy use they give off gases which can create a layer between the pad and rotor, the slots/holes allow these gases to escape and thus aid braking.

    My e46 m3 came stock with drilled discs, they never ever squeaked for me, but the stock BMW pads hummed loudly under heavy braking when warm and they faded badly on track, front and rear. I permanently damaged the pads on a one mile track topping out at 90mph in less than ten minutes. I now run performance friction z rated and 08 pads front/rear and there is so much less noise due to less gas coming off the pad. They still dont squeak so my personal experience doesn't tally up with what this video says about drilled discs.

    Drilled or slotted aren’t fit heat dissipation at all. They are to help vent off gasses from certain types of pads when your brakes get hot under heavy loads because when your brakes get hot on a normal rotor when you start using them hard a gas layer could form under heavy braking hence brake fade. Slotted helps removed this gasses. Drilled does the same thing but are prone to cracking.

    The way to stop skeecking breaks is to dab some copper grease on the pads when you change your break pads.

    Can't believe how much they try to charge to do the brakes at shops. I just needed my front pads and rotors replaced and the shop quoted me *$1,200!* Just bought the parts for like $120 and did it myself in like 1 1/2 hours.

    Slots don’t cool the disc directly but take care of the residue of used pads. It’s more for cleaning than cooling. Anyway less dust equals better heat transfer equals better cooling performance.

    Your "power charts" were fun (as was the rest of the video), but I actually ended up needing the cross-drilled/slotted options for my daily driver. Believe it or not, but with the options I had, the less vented rotors continued to warp because of the mountain roads I daily and the 4,400 lbs of "luxury" gravity kept trying to pull into the hell that is my life. Thankfully, the set I have now has yet to crack (knocks on wood). But even if/when it does, I'll have gotten double the mileage of my last standard set. If you ever design a car and decide to upbadge it by adding 600lbs of options, consider doing more to the brakes than adding 1/4 diameter and dispersing the bias. >_>

    remember that painting your calipers red gives you more horsepower, the nitrons in the red pigment surge though the metal in your car and energize your fuel and blinker fluid, this is also why red cars are more expensive to insure.

    Ceramic as a material polishes itself smooth over time, so I wouldn't imagine it'd be great as a friction material for braking.

    Drum brakes are common on pro drag cars. Tiny wheels don't have a lot of room for big brakes and the surface area is a huge necessity when you hit 140 down track.

    Note: What is to follow doesn't apply to sports cars, trucks or any other vehicle that cannot avoid needing a lot of braking and brake cooling. I prefer (self adjusting) drum brakes because I think they look far better (I don't like seeing rust on cars, which will be visible on any disc), doesn't let brake dust fly around as much, and I prefer how the handbrake works the actual rear brakes rather than some extra system. I also like what they mean for the car itself, as I'm in the belief that if your vehicle _needs_ disc brakes then it's too heavy, and if you're running into heat issues then you're driving too vigorously. Drive smoother---in a reasonably light car, say under 950 kg---and drums all 'round will be fine, and if the drum itself is correctly engineered it'll almost be easier to service than a disc as it isn't as prone to seizing through rust as calipers are, and can be made easy to remove. As for going downhill, all you need to do is put in a somewhat low gear and engine brake (again, not applicable to trucks which must be big and heavy, which could run a risk of high engine heat)
