Some thought the Lions concept would come to an end with the creation of a RWC tournament every 4 years starting in 1987 and later when rugby went professional in 1995. But British and Irish Lions are alive and well in the 2020's and it's great for world rugby. Their successes in 1971 NZ and SA 1974 were the pinnacle for Lions rugby. But beating the Boks 1997, Wallabies 2013 and drawing with the ABs 2017 proves the Lions concept should continue.
How could the concept of it died in 1987 it just because the RWC came about and it was delayed by 2 years in 1989 tour of Australia the first time since 1966 not included the 2 Tour games of 1971 of New Zealand against Queensland 15 -11 British Lions which they lost and came close to Lossing against New South Wales 9-13 British Lions
Yikes you wiped the floor clean with our Dumb Boks in 74! But that was an incredible Lions team! 1997 was a very clever Lions team that beat us! Great video, lots of characters in these Lions teams!
They go on about the Lions of 1971-74 as the greatest but the Lost 3 Games not bad 1974 results 21/22 wins only Lossing the last game against the Springboks,1971 They lost 2 games the first test against the All Blacks and the only tour game they lost between 1971-74 was against the All might Queensland Reds 15 - 11 British Lions just wish they played against the Wallabies (Australia)since they played New South Wales as well even though the majority of the tour was in New Zealand
This is going to sound churlish,but I would question just how good were the 1971 Lions.Yes,they won the series,but a 2-1- 1 drawn series win isn't that conclusive a result. If they were as good as the UK says,they should have won the series 4-0. Like the 1966/83 series won by the AB's.Just saying.
