Another couple of things I would recommend:
1) Write yourself a list of reasons why you are learning Spanish and remind yourself of these reasons when you feel your motivation waning. Add to the list every time you find something you enjoy.
2) Don’t wait too long before you start listening to native speakers at normal speed. I spent my first two years listening to slow Spanish which meant once I was exposed to the natural speed of a Spanish native, I didn’t understand a thing! I still need subtitles but I’m slowly improving my listening skills.

Aprendí castellano en cursos universitarios muy buenos. Ahora llevo 30 años viviendo en España, lo cual me ha aportado un grado importante de perfeccionamiento del idioma. Encima, mi mujer es española. Siendo profesor de idiomas -entre ellos el español - doy el consejo de aprender muy bien los tiempos verbales y las conjugaciones correspondientes y procuraría practicarlo mucho con ejercicios y pequeñas redacciones. Esto ayuda a desarrollar la perfección y la fluidez comunicativa al mismo tiempo.
Tienes muy pero muy buena pronunciación en español, me imagino que en parte es porq fuiste a Chile como estudiante d intercambio y eras un chiquillo, dicen q cuando se aprende un lenguaje antes de los 17 o 18 se aprende mejor la pronunciación (y aun mejor antes de los 10) por algo relacionado con que los músculos de la boca y lengua se desarrollan o se forman de acuerdo a la fonética q se aprende en la niñez y despues es más difícil moldearlos a una nueva fonética

¡Excelente video! Concuerdo con todas tus sugerencias, más que nada de buscar la conexión con las culturas y el idioma. Aunque no he pasado un tiempo extendido en un país de habla hispana, he viajado bastante. Por eso todo lo que es hispano me llama la atención.. Como dijiste, es importante hablar de temas diversos y procurar usar nuevos patrones lingüísticos. Me toca usar una palabra o frase muchas veces hasta que sea parte de mi léxico.

Muchas gracias por este video! Soy de Filipinas, estudio español desde hace tres y medio meses y a mí me gustan tus videos porque los me ayudan mucho a mejorar mi español. La verdad es que no hablo español muy bien (escucho, leo y escribio mejor que hablo) entonces tengo un poco miedo cuando intento hablar, pero voy a escuchar tu segunda lección.
Por la música, a mí me encanta sus canciones de Rosalia.
I was introduced to Maria Delores Pradera about 30 years ago. Long before you could Google the lyrics. I just love trying to sing along with her. Also, the Gipsy Kings. They are a little harder to sing with but still love them. Thank you for your video. I had to read along to fully understand you but I'm getting there!
You have right! I have been learning Spanish since 2022 y estoy basico :) Some verbs I can't remember in Spanish and something change when I start speak to myself and listening more movies on You Tube. At any rate even I don't understand something in Spanish I'm trying to listening more as I can. I would like to be fluently English and Spanish too. I love the Spanish music, is increadible. Spanish has a wonderful melody and I don't explain it, but for me is an amazing language to learn. I learn only myself.

Music was a big motivation for me too. I remember the Bacilos Grandes Exitos CD being a big moment. Some of these songs I've listened to for 20 years now! Still don't know all the words though.

Connor, Thank you very much for making this video. Very useful information & most of all, appreciate your encouragement to push oneself into that next level of Spanish.
Despite being at a basic level of Spanish, I very much enjoy Spanish music. Discovered a band from Spain: "Fito y Fitipaldis" . Besides being amazing musicians, their lyrics, which I have to read first, are often very surreal. For instance, in "Acabo De Llegar", he sings about rebirth & coming back as a fish, but he's not sure how to tell his girlfriend. Most of their songs have mutli-level interpretations to the lyrics.
Also, Reggaeton music by anyone, I can listen to all day. Favorite artists are Piso 21 (Mato Mi Corazon), Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny, & Tempo (No Es Tan Facil).

Gracias Connor por esto... es muy útil, sobre todo porque es en español. Sé que tienes que tener en cuenta a que nivel de estudiantes estás intentando llegar, pero para mí, tu español es perfecto - no demasiado rápido, pero lo suficientemente rápido para ser una muy buena práctica. ¡Perfecto! ¡Más por favor! (Por cierto, el contenindo era muy bueno también).

Thank you for this video. Muchas gracias. Like you, it is music and dance, particularly Bachata that made me want to learn Spanish. It’s been decades since I studied in school. Alexa is helpful! I ask her to play music by my favorite group, Grupo Extra, and I listen on repeat. Alexa Show also often has the lyrics in Spanish. I’m learning to sing in Spanish. Then I follow the English lyrics on my phone. It’s multitasking but I think it’s good for my brain. And I love it!!! Fave songs I’d recommend: Volvió, Cupido Esta Solo, Ven Ami, by Grupo Extra; La Bachata by Manuel Turiso; and Te Extraño (Bachata Versión) by Xtreme. An equal goal is to also learn to dance Bachata. It’s amazing especially as danced by La Alemana and Ataca. Beautiful!

So if im not fluent and i came to watch your videos for tips to help me in my studies. How does it make sense to have the video in all spanish? This baffles me.
It's important to listen to a lot of Spanish on the way to fluency, so this is meant as a bit of listening practice. There are subtitles if you click the gear icon at the bottom right :)
@@BreakthroughSpanishfirst I love your videos and it helps me with specific areas of the lauguage im trying to learn. I understand your intentions but with a title how I became fluent in spanish how can you expect it to be a listening exercise. You are basically explaining to people not fluent in spanish how your became fluent, except you are explaining it in a language they don't understand. Just some feedback with the topic and format your target audience will just be frustrated.

It's not only Spanish listening and reading practice (if you read the Spanish subtitles) but it also gives you motivation to learn when you hear a non-native speaker speaking Spanish so fluently. Es broma. Es por la fama que tienen los chilenos entre los hispanohablantes de que no se les entiende nada cuando hablan. Pero no es verdad, yo al menos les entiendo.

No estoy de acuerdo. Los estudiantes deben aprender a entender el idioma. En inglés se queda todo en teoría.
