Welcome to Vientiane! This Laotian city is the capital of Laos, positioned near the Mekong River and the border of Thailand, and is mostly known as the center of government in Laos. In this episode, we share our lengthy travel day to Laos from Krabi, near the southern tip of Thailand. From our taxi difficulties in Ao Nang and living in airport lounges all day, to traveling as a foreign national to Laos and the visa-on-arrival process, this vlog shares our last day in Thailand of 2022, and the beginning of our time in a new country.

Our flight was late from Bangkok! But no worries, immigration for visas was open at night. And you can get an airport taxi. Pro tip: download the Loca app. It’s the Laos Rideshare app. You can use your credit card to get better ride prices in Vientiane and Luang Prabang!

Great video and very informative. My husband and I are going to Laos at the end of the year. We are Canadian citizens. From your experience, if you had to redo it, would you still get your visa upon arrival or would you get the è-visa prior to getting to Laos? Also, did you have to wait long in order to get your visa on arrival? Tks and great travels!
I like visas-on-arrivals if you have time because it helps you learn a bit about a country immediately! But it did not take long for me because I had a late night flight into Vientiane from Bangkok. The cash and passport photo were the most important items for immigration. Your airline will probably ask for Covid-19 vaccination and onward departure ticket from Laos. 🇱🇦 But eVisas are always easier if you don’t want that cool visa sticker in your passport!

Sadly, most countries are always increasing these visa fees. Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. I guess they think the visa fees are going to replace lost tourist dollars! 💵 😂

You mean you can go to any lounge from different airlines? Like going to restaurant? I thought we can only go to the lounge of our airline ticket
You can at some airports, depending on your lounge memberships. BKK in Bangkok has a great selection of available lounges for Priority Pass members. So we can hop around to different lounges, and it’s paid by my bank since they provide my membership.
How long did the visa process take at the airport? More than 1 hour? I plan to visit quite a few east Asian countries and I am seeing some of them require a visa so I didn't know you can get the visa at the airport when you get there. I did have to apply for a student visa for South Korea so thought that was the only way.
The visa at the airport in Vientiane, Laos 🇱🇦 took less than an hour. It always depends on your nationality for possible visas.

We are also gonna come from Bangkok, we are making a visarun to extend our stay here in Thailand. Did you see if paying with Thai Bath is possible instead of dollars? I heard somewhere it is allowed, but better to have direct experience. Thank you 😊
I also heard this same claim about Thai Baht at the border for Laos. 🇱🇦 Thai Baht was not on the sign at Vientiane’s airport, but it may be possible at land borders. But if you’re flying through Bangkok, I would change some Baht to Dollars 💵 if possible just to be safe.
Thanks for your answer. We made the travel as well. Just to be sure we brought 40 dollars p.p. like you advised as well, but a lady next to us payed in Thai bath. Good to know for others reading this that you don't have to make the extra hassle of getting your hands on dollars. Also we ate something on the Laos airport and could pay with Thai bath. Really nice! I have to say the food was horrible, but maybe I had bad luck and ordered the wrong dish, but for me personally Thaifood is still nr. 1 in the world 😄
Ow yes, with us they checked our Antigen rapid test so they do check other times.
An other thing is my girlfriend gets contact allergy from wearing a mask and we read you need one in the airplane and on the airport, since you need to wear everywhere in Laos a mask. So it got my girlfriend worried. In the end no one cared and in the plane and airport loads of people without a mask, no one complaining about it. Don't know how it is in the rest of the country since we made only a visa run, but yes for us very positive. Thanks again for the video!

Laos 🇱🇦 does require masks in shopping malls in Vientiane and the train stations and trains. But we didn’t have to wear masks outside or in most restaurants and cafés.
I want to ask how did you keep getting to all this lounges? Do they have like a one-time fee or are you a member of all these different clubs or that you buy a first class ticket? And once you get the first class ticket do you get to go into every single lounge
Good question! Sometimes I buy First Class or Business Class tickets. That ticket usually includes lounge access to at least one lounge or maybe two lounges. I also have American Express membership with all Centurion Lounges. And I have Priority Pass membership, which has more than 1,300 lounges across the world. So we usually have access to many lounges in every airport.
3:12 this is new to me: how could you check out of Thailand at the domestic airport? The first flight was Thaismiles domestic to BKK . I understand your luggage was transfered directly to Vientiane.
That’s correct 👍 This was possible because Thai Smile is owned by Thai Airways. And Krabi airport does have an immigration control checkpoint. So they combined our ticket itineraries, and transported our luggage 🧳 directly to Laos. 🇱🇦 But not a fan of Thai Smile. We will avoid their flights in the future. I’ll take more trains in Thailand 🇹🇭 next visit.

Not clear on one thing; do you need to be vaccinated to go to Laos, Vietnam, Thailand & Cambodia? I absolutely refuse to get a vaccination. I had COVID & that is considered to be the best immunization there is. I love Vietnam & Thailand, but the visa situation is limited, so I would like to make Cambodia home base because they are very lax about visas. Good video! Thanks. Vaccination was not checked for Laos 🇱🇦 and Cambodia 🇰🇭 visas. So I don’t know if it’s required. The airline checked vaccination for our trips to Vietnam 🇻🇳 and Thailand. 🇹🇭

Our flights to Vietnam 🇻🇳 and Thailand 🇹🇭 were in September and October last year.

They don’t accept Japan Yen either, luckily I speak Lao and I am Lao but from America studying abroad in Japan. I only had Yen and he got a nice woman to walk me up to the money exchange and back down.
We saw a similar situation. A woman tried to pay for her visa with Euros 💶 and an immigration officer walked her through security to change her currency.
Hello, Im from The Philippines and will be traveling to Laos this August. May I ask, aside from Passport, Health Declaration and etc, is there any other requirements needed from Southeast Asian traveler like me?
You will need an onward ticket leaving Laos. 🇱🇦 Sometimes airlines accept onward train or bus tickets. But airlines might require an onward plane ticket. COVID-19 requirements might have changed. But if you’re fully vaccinated, then you should be fine with just these requirements. Philippines 🇵🇭 citizens are eligible for 30 days visa-free in Laos. 🇱🇦 Safe travels!

Is bank statement necessary to apply for tourist visa?
The Laos 🇱🇦 immigration did not ask me for a bank statement, but they might ask some nationalities. It’s better to have a bank statement ready.
Do they ask return ticket to Bkk or not? İs it Possibleto fly with oneway ticket to lao?
You do need an onward ticket leaving Laos. The airline will ask you for this info.

What you mean by need a passport photo you can just use your passport in person or a state I.D.?
No, you need a printed passport photo on quality photo paper. The Laos 🇱🇦 immigration officers will ask for this at immigration. I think they keep that photo with your application.

I don’t think 🤔 so. But I read some immigration checkpoints don’t care about the photo. But I like to be safe and have at least one photo.

We were not questioned about vaccine status at all. The airline did not ask about our status, and immigration did not ask for any evidence. But Laos 🇱🇦 is still in “mask mode”. You will be expected to wear a mask indoors.
Masks still 😢 wish would have watched this before booking. So passport photo and a immigration form. Didn’t need to do online stuff at all? Travel there on Feb 3rd
We did the online health declaration, but nobody checked it. The immigration officers just want the form, passport (6 months validity), passport photo, and cash. And I think you technically need an onward plane ticket, but I cannot remember if Thai Airways even asked for evidence. 😂

What if u don't have a passport photo? Will they take one for u there?
I did not see the immigration officers taking photos for anyone. But maybe they don’t care about the photo. But I like to keep one photo for every immigration checkpoint. 😆

Airline and airport lounges are usually only free if you have elite status with the airline or a lounge membership subscription, such as Priority Pass. Travel credit cards often include lounge memberships as a perk.

Nope 👎 But you can get lounge access included with most business or first class tickets. Or you can get a premium travel credit card 💳 and get lounge access to more than 1,300 lounges across the world. 🌎
