- One of my all time favourite performances of this beautiful Christmas song, by one of the greatest vocalists I have ever heard. Having watched this video many, many times, I would love to simply share it with you today.
David's ability to emote through his incredible voice is something very special. Technical skill meets natural gifting in this man... Quite overwhelming to me.

David was classically trained at Baylor University in Texas, that education definitely comes out here and there. He has the pipes to be world famous and rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he truly believes, and uses his voice to give glory to God, and that is admirable, even if you’re a non believer.
I knew he was the best the FIRST time I heard him sing…. I had many years of piano and voice!!! I’m 81 now and I could also hear how he emotes every note of his songs and changes time! I need to see him in his studio before I die!!! I shave conjunctiv heart failure and an a fib heart… also type2
Diabetes!! If you can tell me how to see him live in his “barn” please let me know!!!
The most perfect version of O Holy Night ever. Anyone who does not like this, I’m sorry, does not understand in the least a artist in the likes of David Phelps. The piano player who is in heaven now was brilliant! The control of these to talents together is remarkable!
I'm not a believer and I listen to this song all the time and show it to others. It's power cannot be denied.
@@Baelzar This is my favorite version of O Holy Night! David's incredible voice joined with Anthony Burger accompanying him. You can see David's countenance change as he pats his chest, he is singing in the Spirit and you can see the intensity in his face. Love to hear David sing!!! Check out
Anthony Burger is the pianist. He and David performed beautifully together. They just instinctively knew what the other would do. Anthony Burger passed away in 2006. He is missed.
That was incredible piano piece. Not many people notice that.
It was the time heaven needed his gifts, eternally.
I named my son after him
He is one of the few singers that you can understand each and every word. Very rare in Professional singers.
Every single word... I agree!
Kelly Clarkson is another incredible vocalist that enunciates well. She has covered countless songs by other artists that I finally understood lyrically bc they weren't covered up with alot of background singers/instrumentals to hide a weaker/thinner or less disciplined vocalist.
Merry Christmas to you@@AB-ol5uz
It is not just a performance with him, he is singing to GOD. Thank You
My all time favorite male vocalist!!!! He is amazing and he is so passionate about what he sings. He’s so good at the vocal dynamics of Christian music, which is infused with Hope and Life. The excellence and the passion. That’s what sets him apart from everyone else. ♥️
Everyone else who performs O Holy Night:
I nailed it, I did a fantastic job, that was one of my best performances, I'd like to see someone top that.
David Phelps: Hold my water.,...
LOL 😂 That's so funny, Jeffrey!
😂🤣😂🤣😂RIGHT!
I completely agree! I’m a big fan of Josh Groban, but he couldn’t touch this performance by David Phelps! I’m not sure anyone could do it quite like him! I get chills every time I listen to it, and I listen to it probably 20 times each year!! 😂
“Hold my water” 🙌🏽😂😂😂
We listened to this video at church this morning. Amazing, beautiful as you said he believes in what he is singing. It brought tears to my eyes.
Anointed. I love his version of “No More Night”. You can tell he absolutely believes and feels every word and it’s a beautiful picture of eternity.
There are singers and artist that I appreciate and love, but there is no one who fills my entire being with emotion and awe like David Phelps. I am a singer who comes from a talented musical family of gospel singers/song writers where I learned to "hear" music through my soul. He knows exactly how to reach that place. He is THE BEST of the very best. Thank you for your break down of the song and his technique... INCREDIBLE!
Wanda I couldn't agree with you more! Since I discovered him on TH-cam I have seen him several times live and will see him next month at his Barn Bash. He's simply been a huge blessing, especially this really hard time; so comforting.
Amen
Always looking for David Phelps reactions and came across yours which was excellent. Don't know if you still do reactions but if so I would recommend you listen to "Ave Maria / the Lord's prayer"from his classic concert. Absolutely amazing and outstanding. Hope to see this reaction on your channel. Thank you so much😊
Your comments on believing what one sings is so right on - I'm glad you called that out. David wasn't performing, he was worshiping. And this performance reveals how he honed his skill and interpretation of this song to glorify God. Thank you for doing a tasteful job on your analysis and commentary.
The best ever performance of my favourite Christmas Carol ever. There is only one David Phelps.
For years and years I have shared this. The best cover of o holy night I have ever heard. Goosebumps every single time.
The talented man at the piano died during a performance on a Gaither cruise. His heart stopped as he played with all his heart, as he always did...🙏
You, sir, are one of the few I've heard who genuinely understands and can articulate David's mastery of the art we call singing. I pray you are also aware of what a fabulous arranger David is. His arrangements set apart songs we have heard for many years. His talent and skill is unsurpassed!
Thanks so much for your lovely comment - really appreciate it 🤗
You’re absolutely right Sherry! I’m a music director and have heard many great singers, but I’ve never heard anyone come close to David Phelps! He’s truly under appreciated for his abilities. Had he not been a Christian singer and sang just contemporary songs he’d be talked about by everyone, but sadly the market doesn’t shine a big enough light on Christian recording artists!
I can’t hear this without tears streaming down my cheeks. Even these broken up bits. Tears. Love it! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I was in a state of mild shock when I first heard David Phelps sing this song. It has always been my favorite Christmas song. I fully agree how incredible this is! I loved your analysis. Your musical ability and love of music are a joy to see. Peace and blessings in Jesus name.
After watching the Gaither TV video close to a dozen times in the last month and marveling at the performance of David, pianist Anthony Burger and choir who bring it all home, I have to add how much I enjoyed this reaction video and education on the performance that is every bit as good as any other I've seen. For the last 25 years, I told anyone who would listen that country music singer John Berry set the bar on "O Holy Night", but David brings it to another level. I'll still listen to both versions during the holidays, but it will be hard for me to hear anyone else performing it and not thinking about David Phelps and his otherworldly vocal performance from the year our daughter, Ellen, was born.
*Oh night diviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiineeee.*
*I love him and his beautiful voice.*
Me too! Thanks so much for watching!
@@JohanBesterYourVocalCoach you're amazing bro.
So I've posted this video of David Phelps every December for my friends and family over the last 6 or 7 years. It never gets old for me and always chokes me up a bit. Thank you for posting and explaining to everyone why it's such a special performance. Happy Holidays
I am a big fan of David Phelps. This is my all time favorite of all his performances on video. I watch it all year long, not just at Christmas time when I need a lift. The first time I saw this video I wept like I never wept before due to the pure emotion of the song and his performance. He also has another favorite video of mine to a song called "No More Night" which is equally able to stir the emotions. You should check it out also. A few years ago I was able to see David in person from front row and to see and hear him sing Oh Holy Night in person was a dream of mine! I literally went to the show to hear that song! It was incredible. A man of such extraordinary talent!
This is the best version ever! You listen to this version and you feel His presence, and the power in the lyrics.
I am going to see him Thursday night for his Christmas concert! Have seen him several times. I so appreciate your critique! He is amazing! What a
gift!
The piano player is Anthony Burger. He was an amazing musician with the Gaither group. Sadly, he passed away some years ago. Have seen the Gaither's many times in concert as well as David Phelps - an awesome artist!
Where is David now? Who is he singing with? I always LOVED to hear him sing and I have some of his albums.
@@diannejohnson5370 He is still performing and making music. He does a lot of solo work but I think still takes part in reunion events with the Gaithers
Yeah I remember that. My mom was there when it happened.
Very well said Becky...Anthony passed, far too early.
Here are two amazing talents, at the peaks of their talents, joining to deliver a performance for the ages!!
I well-up, every time I hear it, and especially as we head to Christmas Eve service.
I love how you say that you must have a feeling with the song. David Phelps makes me teary eyed everytime I listen to this song.
Always moved by this song,my favourite!David sang to his Saviour Jesus with his whole heart!Bless you sir for posting this beautiful Christmas song!
I love his voice. This is one of my favorites he sings but I also love "He's Alive" I can't wait until the end and every time I hear it I have tears in my eyes. He is EXCEPTIONAL!
Like all geniuses, there are many layers to their talent. This one is amazing. Thankyou.
My favorite Oh Holy Night ever. I play it every year. Kudos to the piano player.
He is also one of my favourite singers. He just has a brilliant voice and brilliant technique.
Mine too! He is so humble! And steps back and does not want the Accolades
If you ask me I think the breathy tone David uses shows the emotion he’s putting in the song. I too love it!
One of the most perfect performances of our time, David is beyond perfect preforming this song,
That’s what we all do when David belts those high notes. ( shake our head ) 😂
Great job breaking down the key components. He’s the greatest tenor on the planet right now, in my opinion !
hes a baritone 😅😅
@@larsheijne4586 not hardly lol
David can do it all! He's a baritone and a tenor. Amazing vocal range.
@@bobrossi3632 ironically, David actually admitted his vocal chords are shaped like a baritone lol
@@rileysilosmusic ok, I surrender lol
David Phelps’ rendition here is the greatest Christmas song ever sung.
12:16 fun fact….. the guy over his left shoulder with the red shirt and red tie is the man who wrote “Mary Did You Know” (Mark Lowry)
Give credit to the cameraman, incredibly talented pianist, genuine people’s reaction. ❤❤❤ The best version indeed!
Stunning, breathtaking, passionate, powerful and deeply moving..
I have watched this performance countless times and it touches me so deeply every single time 🙏
David Phelps is the real thing ❤
Thank you for your wonderful analysis.
I just saw him a month ago and New Philadelphia Ohio I am from Kentucky and this man is Anointed
First verse, Phelps approaches the song like a story-teller. It's almost a 'Once Upon a Time' feeling. He sets up the story leading into the chorus. The first chorus introduces the first challenge and then resolved, going into the softer approach again.
Second verse, its the story building. It's more emotive. He brings passion and convictions into the song. It is the real message of the story. This is where Phelps wants you to really listen, because this is what he thinks is important.
Then the climax before the second chorus, pulled through into the second chorus with the backing, brings the joyful ending. You can really hear his faith in this song.
Great reaction, man. Love your explanations and observations. It’s easy to just sit there and go “wow” at David’s incredible voice, but you do a fantastic job of explaining WHY it’s so incredible. Well done
Thank you for being so kind in your analysis of arguably one of the great singers I have ever heard. Thank God that David is sharing his gift with all of us. I have listened to this over a hundred times and it is still like the first time....just amazing.
David Phelps us an awesome southern gospel singer who studied opera. His vocal range is amazing. His ministry has such a powerful anointing.
This was recorded about 20 years ago. He recently covered Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," which is incredible.
I saw that... incredible indeed! Thanks for watching!
Anything would be better than the screamer Houston!
David Phelps is my all time fav gospel singer. Such range! I always get holy bumps when he hits those legendary high notes 💜
Thank you so much for commenting on the pianist..he is truly amazing right its a wow..David is just amazing
Appreciated the video! Great comments and observations. David is one of a kind.
Thanks so much for your feedback 🤗
I LOVE David! I have met him several times, seeing him live, and next month at his Barn Bash in TN. He is very personable and kind. TOTALLY gifted by God to bless us mere mortals. His high notes knock my socks off every time!
Oh wow!!! just come across this and can't believe there is someone out there who LOVES this as much as I do!! I listen to this every year and it moves me to tears EVERY time!! Thank you so much for breaking it down in the way that you did....so very interesting! This performance takes my breath away and who wouldn't have wanted to be there watching it live!! Have you seen his live performance of 'It is Well' from 2012...another little snippet of his brilliance. God bless you and thank you!
I truly enjoyed your thoughts on David's phenomenal singing. This is truly the best version of the song I have ever heard.
David is 51 now and still on top of his Craft
Absolutely 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
so glad you did this analysis....LOVE David's voice....I learned a lot from you as you shared with us! Thanks
This video was recorded over 23 yrs ago. It's amazing how many reaction videos there are of this song.
FAITH is the key. That is where your inspiration comes from... from whatever you believe. God bless him, as he has taken music to another level.
Anthony Burger did a very good job on the piano. When Anthony was a toddler he burnt his hands severely. Doctors said Anthony would never have full use of his hands. God healed his hands and Anthony Burger became 1 of the best piano players of all times. RIP my friend.
That is absolutely the most perfect rendition of oh holy night I’ve ever heard. God bless you David
You are a great teacher! I believe music/art should impact individuals emotionally---a true sign of a true artist! Phelps always impressed me with his talent and range. Thank you for sharing!
Yeah that brother sound is brilliant and that's his style I think that's brilliant and beautiful and so touching and so emotionally done and excellently done he's the best
Amazing DAVID PHELPS!! I believe the greatest male voice of our generation. That unbelievable pianist is Anthony Burger. Sadly he passed away in 2006 at the age of 44 from a heart attack.
Such a bitter-sweet performance. David is just incredible. And, Anthony Burger is one of best pianists I've heard. I still feel his loss but never more than when I see this video. Two great artists who combine in that magical way music produces. Loved all your insights into this song. I am subscribing!
On his first 'oh night' he does this slight back-off before adding vibrato. So subtle but so powerful. It's a complete vocal masterclass!
Thank you for helping me to know why I am so struck with David's singing. I'm no singer except in my head. This adds to my respect and awe. Thank you.
He was always my favorite Gaither vocalist! Thanks for the video!
He’s even better than ever at age 51. He has a new album coming out in September, Gamechanger. He released this cover of Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing this past April. It’s extraordinary. Link below.
Can't wait for the new album! Thanks for your comment, Lee Ann 😊
I just love his interpretation. So awesome of him.
Enjoyed the review of David Phelps. Great singer of our times!
I'm so glad to see that I have such good judge of voice. I watch this many times a year. Absolutely beautiful.
I love what you said about it aligning with him, when I watched this, I felt he was radiating this passion for what he was singing - this is why i searched for a reaction video and I realize you saw it too
Who can possibly criticize this performance?
he is incredible hands down the best I've ever heard
Love how David controls the song in it’s entirety…
“Many a classical tenor would love it to sing their c sharps like that” yeah no kidding. I can’t believe how good this is!
I like hearing the opinion of a pro. Doesn’t take away from a singer in a live event or what you what you feel listening to it on TH-cam, but really interesting to get a professional’s perspective. What Phelps does is pretty amazing in this song. Lovely.
Your are correct! He is the greatest anointed singer to ever sing this song. Every word comes forth with meaning. Wow!
My favorite David Phelps moment is during " Let Freedom Ring" from Carnegie Hall when towards the end he plucks a C#5 out of the air and let's it fly.
Great honest and thorough critique of this beautiful song and singer. Thank you!
I have watched this a few times and love your reaction. I have listened to this man for years and to me he has no equal. He may have, but I have not heard anyone personally who I think comes close to his ability. I would like to suggest you listen to him sing No More Night, the live version. I would also like you to listen to him sing the older song of Whitney Houston “I Have Nothing” -it is simply--The Greatest version. Thank you and hope you will enjoy as much as I have.
David Phelps and Anthony Burger were my two favorite performers in the Gaither's when I was growing up and still are. RIP Anthony.
David Phelps is educated and trained in music and drama performance. This is a 5 star example of those things.
He’s got a batchelor degrees ( I don’t know if I spelled that correctly! I’m norwegian👍)
AND he is filled with The Holy Spirit! A wonderful blessing he is! ALL glory to God who gave this talent to the right guy! Amen and merry christmas to you all😇 He’ll be back soon, you know! And we shall sing like David when we’re in Heaven! Hallelujah🙌💕
I’ve had the honor of meeting David and hearing him live a few times. He’s a fun and humble guy, and probably my favorite tenor and singer ever. As has been pointed out, his every word is perfectly enunciated. The pianist, Anthony Burger, died in 2006, way too young, by our consideration. He and David were musical equals; who, when together, created magic. I thank God for people whose God-given talents are yielded back to Him.
Thanks so much for your commentary. As a layman I appreciate the nuances. If you get the chance listen to David singing with Charlotte Ritchie a beautiful Christmas piece titled Fall On Your Knees.
I have enjoyed your reaction more than just about any other. You gave such description, and such information. You have a great voice. Thank you! Just subbed.
"You must be able to believe.. in what you sing about."
Music is not simply mathematics and physics,
music is a carrier wave bringing to others the abundance of your heart.
..
I agree! Thanks so much for watching 🌷
Amen amen I watch it all the time I listen to it all the time no more nights too and on heaven's shore and I want to live like a king and just so many more of his songs she's just utterly and totally my favorite singers of all time
Thank you for such a well considered review of this piece. This man not only knows how to sing, but he understands the delivery of lyrics which clearly align with his ethos. Thank you again
Been watching this video for years at Christmas. I love David.
Absolutely that's exactly what you see and what you hear too is that he feels it and he believes it and makes us believe that our believers he's the best there is he's going to be the leader of the choir I hope in heaven
I first sang this song for the school Christmas program when I was in 4th grade. I was 9 years old with a two octave range. This song wraps around and through so many Christmas memories for me.
The Gaithers were from Anderson, Indiana which isn't in the southern United States. They were at the vanguard of music for worship that coulld stand on it's own. The music could be sung by solo performers, small groups and full choirs which was different from choirs only. They change music worship forever.
The pianist, Anthony Burger, had an accident as a baby and burned his hands, 3rd degree burns. He was told he'd never be able to use them. That proved not to be true obviously. He actually started playing at a young age. At the age of five, he was accepted to the Cadek Conservatory, University of TN. A child prodigy, he was playing classical piano repertoire within a few years.
Sadly, he died during a concert of a heart attack. He was only 44. I had the pleasure of seeing a few concerts with him playing. An amazing pianist. I loved watching and listening to him play.
Beautiful reaction and great reflections. Thank you.
Dear Sir,
Please know that I first experienced David Phelps' performance, and then learned from your critique.
Thank you for your
thoughtful & obviously professional insights!
David's power is evident yet how he shapes each note within the selection also reveals his control which is immense! David doesn't just sing a piece of music he lives and breathes the music into each note of the selection. David's talent is most definitely God given as is evident in his desire to please only God with his efforts. For if God is pleased everyone else will be awestruck with God and not himself. Thank You Lord for lending David to us for this period of time!
Such a gift he has! Amazing, magnificent indeed!!!!
He is one of my favorites worship singers. Amazing voice
Thank you for your critique of David. So glad you appreciate David's gift. Bless you.
This was amazing! Thank you for featuring him! ♥️
Who cares what they think. He's conveying his feelings. He's the best.
Incredible vocal talent ! Just heard him in concert tonight. O Holy Night was incredible !
Best performance by best vocalist ever!
