Your face when he hits those last notes! That is everyone the first time they hear David. He is amazing. I second all the other recommendations below. So many people sleep on David Phelps because he falls mostly into the Christian/Gospel category. Great reaction.
I love his "Joy Joy" Christmas song which he wrote. It has some strange parts a couple of times that are for emotion I think. But I really like that one. When he sings with the Gaither Vocal Band (Bill and Gloria Gaither) a group of 4, he's amazing too. "Let Freedom Ring" is great. You have a gorgeous voice.
The piano player was Anthony Burger, who played with the Kingsmen for years and was taken from us way too soon. This was LIVE in Birmingham, Alabama for a Gaither Homecoming concert. I have seen comments for No More Night, to which I heartily concur. I would add The End of the Beginning to that list. I listen to this every Christmas now. To me, it is the embodiment of the wonder, joy, and meaning of this season. Thank you for your thoughtful and candid reaction video!
David is a devout Christian & sings with his soul! 💖 And that "choir" is made up of every top gospel singer & group still alive at the time of the recoding! Gospel singers, Bill Gaither & his wife get these people together for these concerts. Mark Lowrey, got his start w/the Gaither Vocal Band & still performs with them whenever he can. It's like s gospel jam session! 🤗💞
Yes !! David is gifted christian singer and he respects his gift and praise GOD in every song he sings, thank G0D for David and the Gaither's good job honoting G0D with Gospel music

Welcome to the wide and wonderful catalog of David Phelps and his beloved Phelps Phans. We see his name in a reaction . . . and we're here! You are about to enjoy a great and wonderful adventure. He is a singer's singer and his skill at writing original songs and rearranging classics is unparalleled.
I have never heard a better rendition of this song, ever! David Phelps is a very special talent, still going at it to this day and hasn't lost a step. I absolutely love watching people's reactions to first hearing this song! Blown away describes it the best 🙂
My parents used to watch the Gaither Gospel Hour all the time. This is one of, if not the only time, that Bill Gaither ever brought an artist back out for an extended ovation. You can see from the reactions of the other members that they knew they had just heard a once in a lifetime rendition. Also - just an extra FYI - the man directly behind David in the black jacket and red shirt is Mark Lowry - the lyric writer of another Christmas staple - 'Mary, Did You Know?' - who performed the song regularly with David and others in the show.
This. This version of O Holy Night is one of, if not the best, out there. I'm not religious. At all. But I can not hear this without tears. His talent is awe-inspiring. I was really excited to see your reaction when I got the notification.
This. This comment talking about O Holy Night, is one of, if not the best, out there. I am also not religious. At all. But I cannot listen to this without getting emotional. His talent inspires awe. I was really excited to watch this when I saw your video randomly on my feed.
The lyrics of this song are true. We will all die and be before God one day. We will either be judged based on our own righteousness, which we have none, or we are credited with the righteousness of Jesus Christ, of God, as a gift purchased by His death on the cross and resurrection. God took the punishment we deserve, paid the debt we owe, and died the death we earned, and offers us what He earned on our behalf.
I LOVE seeing people react to David Phelps who have never heard him before. You did not disappoint. I know what you meant about feeling like the piano was competing for top billing, but I think that the way the piano was played was what allowed David to control the timing. Definitely check out his other songs. As a Christian, my favorite song that always brings a message of hope is “No More Night.” He can sing many styles of music and 10 years later he is just as good. Maybe even better. He trains and works hard to keep in top vocal form but he always gives God the glory for his very special gift.
Anthony Burger is the pianist. He died of a heart attack about 18 years ago while playing in a Gaither concert during a Gaither cruise. David, during the time of this particular concert in this video, had only been with the Gaither Vocal band for about a year. The way Anthony is playing is because it is what David told Anthony he wanted for the music. Anthony is very well known for this style of playing. David is also a vocal performance major in music from Baylor University. He is very well known as one of the very best vocalists in the Gospel Music field right now and has been for 15+ years.
You have been "Phelpsed" as we fans of David would say. He is the best vocalist I have ever heard. His portfolio of songs/performances is enormous. Every one is out of this world.
Fantastic reaction by you, Danielle! David Phelps sings with such compassion, voice control and excellence (he majored in music and opera at Baylor University) that all of his songs are so compelling. Please react as soon as you can to David Phelps rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing." The more you listen to his songs, you understand why people are saying that David Phelps is the best male singer out there right now.
Love when people get to discover David Phelps. One of my favorite vocalists ever. Gotten the chance to meet him several times now and heard him sing. Always perfect every time.
Hey girl, congratulations first, this performance was incredible. His dynamics, pitch and delivery was almost completely flawless. The incredible pianist was Anthony Berger who tragically died of a massive heart attack he suffered on a cruise ship on stage playing for the Gaither vocal band. Makes this performance even more special! God bless! Low bass Kenneth.
David has made me cry every single time I have listened to this song over the years, nothing EVER has compared to his rendition of this beautiful song ❤
I saw him last Saturday night. And over 20 years later still stunning. Nessun Dorma lovely. He did a cover of Whitney's I Have Nothing... Just piano and cello and David's voice. Wow! Always a joy to see a first reaction to David . thank you
Awesome reaction!! NO MORE NIGHT, WE SHALL BEHOLD HIM, JUST AS I AM. Just a few to start. Please go down this rabbit hole!! Been listening to him for 25 years and he is the best tenor I have ever heard!!
I Have Nothing will leave you just as gobsmacked. Twenty two years later, he’s still got it. His arrangements are always so perfectly done. You hear things you’ve never heard before but the song is still true to the original. Bad thing is, only extremely exceptional vocalists can sing his arrangements. I have nothing is David, a piano, and a cello and is exquisite.
You NEED to hear David Phelps singing Where Freedom Rings with his group (Gaither Vocal Band) when they sang at Carnegie Hall after 911. There are 2 versions on TH-cam. The more outstanding one is the original one where he has a blue shirt under his suit. The other one was when he was older and in a tux. The 1st one version was the BEST! You’ll know what I mean when you hear it!
I have been a David Phelps "phan" for almost 19 years now, and I can tell you that his stage presence, with its incredible ability to draw you in, matches his stunning vocals Early on in his career, he was told he should go into opera, but David had the courage to follow his heart and pursue Gospel, often Southern Gospel (especially for years with The Gaither Vocal Band)--although it should be pointed out that he also is known for his secular works as well The word that I have always (LITERALLY!) felt with David is TRANSCENDENCE, and you, also will experience this is you're able to see him live And yes--he sooo makes each song his own! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You need to get his rendition of I got nothing the Whitney Houston song. He is in his home when he recorded it. Be ready for a beautiful journey in David 's wonderful blessed career. And we his followers are so grateful he chosed to Sheard with us.🙏❤
Danielle, you may also want to listen to Voctave's version of "Mary Did You Know?" featuring Mark Lowry. Mark wrote the lyrics to the song and performed with David Phelps as part of the Gaither Vocal Band.
me too... the amount of emotion and soul that David's voice flows with is just AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL and POWERFUL. It could only be the Holy Spirit at work here!
PLEASE!! More David Phelps! He is an amazing singer, and i enjoy watching your reaction to him. I'm so glad i subscribe to your channel because your smile and enthusiasm are so refreshing. May i suggest "For These Tears I Died"? It's so beautiful, and David sings with his daughters, Callie and Maggie Beth. The harmonies are awesome. Thank you!
Thank you for bringing David Phelps to us - if you want chills, check out: NO MORE NIGHT, WE SHALL BEHOLD HIM, LET FREEEDOM RING. he is the greatest gospel tenor in the world, bar non - enjoy the journey~
Two things: watch his video cover of “No more Night”. Also, Mark Lowry, the co-writer of “Mary did you know” is part of this choir in the background. He’s seen over David’s left shoulder.
“No More Night” is probably my most favorite David Phelps song. I also love “Goin’ Home.” But, there are so many that he does so well! He also sang beautifully “America” in the Impossible Dream, part of the Signed Sealed and Delivered series. He’s a national treasure!
He does an amazing version of “Bring Him Home” from Les Mis also. Can’t go wrong with a little David Phelps in your life. You could spend a couple weeks doing just his song and be amazed by all of them.
It is a treat to listen to gospel singers who are great artists in their own right. Southern Gospel has some of the greatest voices, David Phelps included.
David Phelps is incredible. His storytelling ability through song is unmatched. Check out his earlier work with the Gaither Vocal Band. Truly he has been blessed with an incredible voice and is doing exactly what he was born to do. Thanks for the reaction! Subscribed!
Every time I hear this, i cry tears of joy and feel the Holy Spirit in my soul. David, through the gift he was given by God, captures the essence of this song better than anyone else. It's almost impossible not to feel the passion and love of God's message in David's performance. I'm so thankful that so many people are able to see and witness the power of God's Christmas message through David's singing. Praise God and his Son Jesus, who came to this world not to condemn us but to save us all.
David performs all his music this way. I saw him live in my local church. He is and has been by far my favorite male vocalist. You have to see him live!
First heard David in 1998 singing this very song. Took me 3 days to get my chin off the ground. He is by far THE greatest Tenor on this planet And he just keeps on going. God certainly blessed this man.
David had not long been part of this Group and was still very shy...if you watched the end he kind of moves himself into the background...but is pulled forward by Bill Gaither and made to take a bow. lol Such a humble man. Please do more from David. He is still writing and performing at the age of 50+ He recently did his own version of 'I have Nothing' a Whitney Houston smash hit....which just left me gobsmacked. He sang it in the same key too. Sending love from Australia 'liked and subscribed'
Just saw David Phelps sing O Holy Night live last night! It’s still as incredible now as it was 22 years ago! For more of his astounding brilliance I would suggest you react to “Heaven’s Shore”, “Panis Angelicus”, “We Shall Behold Him”, “Let Freedom Ring” and “End Of The Beginning” to name a few! Happy listening!
Danielle, I’m a subscriber to your channel because of your Home Free reactions. Their four-part harmony is at the top of my musical interests today. But my first love is the Southern Gospel music genre, which first introduced me to David here. He is truly special. This performance was from a DVD released in 2000, so the actual concert was I believe in 1999. Truly spectacular!
So many of David's fantabulous songs have already been mentioned. One he wrote many years ago and it sat in the piano bench, and now his daughter Maggie Beth, sings is He's Still My Child. .one more to add to the list is from his Freedom album, I Want To Live Like A King......he also plays the piano in it.
I've been listening to David Phelps sing since 1997 when the Gaither Vocal Band released their album God is Good, it was their first album with David. I was 9 years old then, and I have followed David's career closely ever since. Many people will give you songs he has done over this quarter century and they are all worth watching, but I'm going to talk about something that I appreciate about David and his artistry. He is a very gifted rearranger, and this is not just my opinion but are the words of Bill Gaither himself. The song in this video "O Holy Night" is one of David's self-professed "Favorite Christmas songs" and he sings it a lot, this performance though is one of a kind, I have never heard him sing it this way again. A few years after this around 2004 I believe, he released a solo Christmas album with this song and it's already different, fast forward a few more years another Christmas Album another version of this song, and so on until his most recent version done in 2018 where we see him change this song to a duet, change the title to "Fall on your Knees" and change the song in such a way I didn't even recognize it as "O Holy Night" for the first several months I listened to it, it just never clicked in my head what I was actually listening to was O Holy Night. But I've always appreciated David's ability to be creative and make music his own and unique not just copy the popular trend. That is why I think David Phelps is not only one of the greatest singers alive today but one of the greatest musical artist alive today.
My 1st time finding you. I loved your reaction. To say that David can sing is like saying God is great. Let's just say that both statements are a tad understated. I've been listening to him for sometime now. He is or was part of the Gaither vocal group. Simply the finest tenor EVER, bar NONE. Glad you enjoyed him. I will be looking at you more often. Thank you, Ron
I LOVE that you pointed out the organ!! I’ve only seen one other reactor mention it and it provides such a HUGE foundation to the energy and power of that part of the song. I LOVE pipe organs!! Haha Oh…and David is TRULY the GOAT!! You have SOOOO much more David Phelps to explore! I hope you do…I just subscribed because of this reaction. 😊
David is one of the best vocal talents in our lifetime. Even if you are not religious, I suggest watching more of him. All those people in the background singing are all famous gospel singers too. Every single one of them has incredible clarity and range, but they come together like a choir. If you watch enough Gaither videos, you start to recognize people individually. You also start to realize how much you can really feel something for music when the singer feels it themselves. It's truly eye opening.
He is AMAZING!! I've met him a few times at his performances and he is so funny, kind, and humble. We get to go see him perform in February near Phoenix!!! Can't wait. He's Alive is my 2nd favorite after his O Holy Night - which still makes me cry!!!

I listen to this every Christmas now. To me, it is the embodiment of the wonder, joy, and meaning of this season. Thank you for your thoughtful and candid reaction video!
The best version you'll ever hear. It's beautiful.
You can see Mark Lowrey behind David getting excited.
The best male vocalist ever…. Listen to “Water” that he sings with his talented daughter Maggie Beth… all his music is just amazing and addictive! I’m such a Phelps Phan 😊❤
I agree 100%, he is my all time favorite
You Got to listen to him sing
He’s Alive 😮
My parents used to watch the Gaither Gospel Hour all the time. This is one of, if not the only time, that Bill Gaither ever brought an artist back out for an extended ovation. You can see from the reactions of the other members that they knew they had just heard a once in a lifetime rendition. Also - just an extra FYI - the man directly behind David in the black jacket and red shirt is Mark Lowry - the lyric writer of another Christmas staple - 'Mary, Did You Know?' - who performed the song regularly with David and others in the show.
His cover of “I have Nothing” is in the original key and is a recent release. Won’t be disappointed!
David is, hands down, my favorite male vocalist ever. Period.
One of the best live performances across any genre of music ever
Still one of the best live performances ever
I've heard this song sung by David Phelps so many times before and never get tired of hearing him sing it. Your reaction to it was wonderful.
Now that’s a world class voice … just WOW
I LOVE seeing people react to David Phelps who have never heard him before. You did not disappoint. I know what you meant about feeling like the piano was competing for top billing, but I think that the way the piano was played was what allowed David to control the timing. Definitely check out his other songs. As a Christian, my favorite song that always brings a message of hope is “No More Night.” He can sing many styles of music and 10 years later he is just as good. Maybe even better. He trains and works hard to keep in top vocal form but he always gives God the glory for his very special gift.
He's singing his best for the One that died for Him and his sins on the cross! He indeed praises His Holy Name! Christ is the Lord!
RIP to the great Anthony Burger, the pianist for this performance.
Thanks for reacting! David Phelps is one of my favorite singers for sure
He’s the best tenor at 53 still kills it
I have been in the front row 3 or 4 times when he has performed this...absolutely stunning!
You can't go wrong listening to anything he sings. He is just incredible. I have always loved his voice!!
This is my favorite Christmas song and David Phelps singing it is the absolute best ever. The piano player was great also
Love when people get to discover David Phelps.
Wow! Always a joy to see a first reaction to David . thank you
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! Love David Phelps!!!
Without question, the best version of the most beautiful song ever written!
I am at least 1 million of the views on that video lol. Me and my husband can’t get enough of it!! Year round!
The sheer joy in you face when his voice soared and the choir joined in was awesome to see. Nice reaction.
You need to get his rendition of I got nothing
the Whitney Houston song.
He is in his home when he recorded it. Be ready for a
beautiful journey in David 's
wonderful blessed career.
And we his followers are
so grateful he chosed to
Sheard with us.🙏❤
Danielle, you may also want to listen to Voctave's version of "Mary Did You Know?" featuring Mark Lowry. Mark wrote the lyrics to the song and performed with David Phelps as part of the Gaither Vocal Band.
Oh, yes! That is the most stunning version ever. It touches the heart like no other.
If you notice...mark is directly behind david
@@mikewalker3025, I noticed. I just didn't mention it.
he's a gospel singer, everything he sings is magic.
I have to say... his rendition brings me to tears. It's so beautifully done.
me too... the amount of emotion and soul that David's voice flows with is just AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL and POWERFUL.
I loved watching you watch David sing. I found David long ago and have love ever since day one.
Best tenor on earth.
Two things: watch his video cover of “No more Night”. Also, Mark Lowry, the co-writer of “Mary did you know” is part of this choir in the background. He’s seen over David’s left shoulder.
Been to numerous concerts of his! Absolutely the best! Glad you discovered him! Thanks for sharing!
“No More Night” is probably my most favorite David Phelps song. I also love “Goin’ Home.” But, there are so many that he does so well! He also sang beautifully “America” in the Impossible Dream, part of the Signed Sealed and Delivered series. He’s a national treasure!
The piano player is Anthony Burger from the Gaither Homecoming Group. He died in 2006.
He is by far THE greatest Tenor on this planet
And he just keeps on going.
I've been waiting for you to discover this! David is a gift and his music is a blessing to anyone who listens.
Loved your reaction to this. David Phelps is amazing.
I’m not Christian, not American, not even straight, but this man’s voice makes me think twice!
No matter, you are still loved by God. Bless you in the new year!
I was blessed to hear him live about 5 years ago. Amazing.
Haha
Oh…and David is TRULY the GOAT!! You have SOOOO much more David Phelps to explore! I hope you do…I just subscribed because of this reaction. 😊
You have discovered a vocal master!! I'm so happy for you! I'll not repeat what's been said in the other comments. I agree with many of them!!
In my opinion, David Phelps is the best voice in Nashville hands down. Thank you for reacting to his version of O Holy Night!
He is AMAZING!! I've met him a few times at his performances and he is so funny, kind, and humble. We get to go see him perform in February near Phoenix!!! Can't wait. He's Alive is my 2nd favorite after his O Holy Night - which still makes me cry!!!
Danielle, I’ve been listening to your reactions for some time and I truly enjoy your content. David Phelps is so amazing and you have many great suggestions in the comments. No More Nights is another of my favorites. #Subscription Squad
I've listened to this songs dozens--maybe hundreds of times--but watching your reaction to it adds to my joy.
Taking absolutely nothing away from David, but, having the late, great Anthony Burger play piano with you definitely helps bring on the awesomeness as well!!! 😁
