Yes they screwed him back by trying to shift all the licensing and giving him a measly % of what he was getting in royalties, but I really hope they can settle their differences. I get the feeling Hook is a little remorseful that he's no longer a member, although he should be proud of his achievements with The Light.
@@Metal-Possum it was more due to him hanging onto Rob's share of the Haçienda name ownership (after Rob passed away in 1999, his widow bequeathed his share to New Order. Yeah I dont get it either. His vocal abilities and lyrics are average at best. Jim Morrison wasnt a good singer either, but he had a lot of redeeming qualities. Interesting lyrics, looks, stage presence.
GOOD ME TOO AND MANI BOTH TOP BLOKES BOTH LEGENDS END OF OW AND YES I GOT BOTH THERE AUTO GRAFF SO MAKE ME LAFF, THANK YOU BOTH MUCH LOVE MANCHESTER ONE LOVE. XXXXXXX
I'm 50 and have been a New Order/Joy Division fan since the age of 15 (1987). I saw New Order in 1989, and both bands are such a HUGE part of my upbringing and adult life. I was heartbroken about New Order. SUCH a sad ending. :(
Your the same age as me and that's around the time I got into them. They've been like a soundtrack to our lives❤. Id love to see them play together again.
I go see Peter Hook and The Light every time they come here. Excellent show every time! As long as he’s being compensated for his stake in the songs/publishing and in the name I wouldn’t care what the others did. No disrespect to the others, still love NO, but Hooky’s my fav bassist, his shows are great and he’s doing just fine.
Hook and the others have worked out the licensing royalties since this video was taken, they are still not together but Hook is no longer angry about licensing or royalties anymore like he was in the past. I've seen Hook and The Light and also the others who are now calling themselves "New Order" perform in 2018, both were great shows. It was especially a nice treat to see a full set of Joy Division songs played live by Peter Hook and the Light, I never thought I'd see the day when at least one member of New Order/Joy Division would perform a bunch of Joy Division songs live, it was great!
djbethell Nah man, they all had equal contributions. Listen to The Other Two, the project between Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris. They released an album called The Other Two and You while NO was on hiatus. It’s really good and Tasty Fish is a killer single.
What a shame that a band that has stayed with me from childhood through to adulthood and has been a massive influence on my musical tastes has ended up falling out. Life is too short to all fall out, especially when you've been through the experiences these guys have been through. I really hope they all sort it out before it's too late.
I was at a twisted sister show in 2014 and this would have been when all of the original members put aside their differences. Dee Snider told a story about how their first get together went south very quick. One of the members pulled a gun and pointed it at Snider in the meeting. He told this in front of thousands of people while that member was on stage with him. His advice to other bands is that they have to put arguements and hatred aside. He didn't give any analogies and just flat out told bands to grow up. That speech went on for about 10 minutes or so and from what I remember the whole audience was kind of quiet. Those words seemed to have resonated with a lot of people. A year later A.J Pero past away and the band disbanded shortly after. BUT to be able to get together one last time with all of the original members touring and playing Stay Hungry in its entirety is something that those members will probably cherish forever.
If either one passes, it'll be their greatest regret. They need to patch thing up.. have an honest talk.. or a massive brawl or something. Such a shame really after all those years. Really wish they be back as friends ( and as a complete group ) at some point or another.
It's the Manchester curse. Luckily The Stone Roses have managed to avoid it and have had a great time reuniting (although they did mutually break up in the first place)
Sorry I dont agree, I love Pete with New Order in 80's, but solo his voice sounded like a drunk dad at a wedding. I saw him twice that year just to make sure he just wasnt having a bad night in Austin Tx ... ugh, no it happened again in Dallas. Bass was amazing still but no no no on vocals :(
I concur, they were amazing! It was a real treat to see, not only a full set of New Order songs performed by them but a full set of Joy Division songs too!
@SgtBaker16 Depends what you mean by fine. If you mean making some cash, then yes. If you mean being relevant then no. No one cares about them, their music lacks passion now. Barney can't sing to save his life, so Stephen on drums is the only real semblance of talent with history still in there. Barney was carried all the way by the others all the time. Decent input in JD, but once he started singing, it was a downward spiral, and he become more important than his input actually was. They did well to last as long as they did. N.O now isn't N.O as anyone remembers it, it's a different thing completely.
@@BreathFreeAndRemainNameless because he's terrible at it lmao. i hate to say it because i love them all to death but he just isn't a frontman. he literally cannot play and sing at the same time.
Hooky does these interviews almost like he is talking to Bernard and appealing to him. Clearly he would love to just forget everything and give him a hug and start touring again, but whatever Bernard is doing, he isn't listening to this interview. Shame really
Ah Pete, you are loved, mate. We all understand or at least empathise with what you and NO have been through. And like you, we all wish it were different. Maybe one day it will be. Who knows!? I for one, would love to see you and Bernard with Steve and Gillian on stage again performing as New Order. I’m praying that will happen. Regardless, thank you for so many songs that are etched into our heads and hearts. Love ya man.
Peter Hook sounds very genuine, doesn’t hold back and I feel like he’s the one telling the truth. I tend to go on his side. New Order without Peter Hook is like The Smiths without Johnny Marr.
Hooky's always given some of the best interviews. It's sad they ended this way, but then, if the problems go so far back they should have ended it then. Credit to Yahoo for conducting these interviews, they're very well done.
Hook was the best. The band is not the same anymore. Still great memories of them for all those years, I'm turning 50 next year. I was in the thick of it all, and I LOVED EVERY MOMENT OFIT!
If it doesn't have Hooky's trademark bass sound, then it's not New Order. A great pity, but it had to end somewhere. As ABBA once sang, "Thank you for the music..." Fucking good times. Low-life was their best album, IMO. :(
Agreed, I take Movement's FACT.50 as my DJ namesake, but Low-Life is the best of both of their sides, upbeat/pop and dark/brooding. Face Up is probably the best example of both styles being blended perfectly.
@@thebarbaryghostsf Low Life is the last New Order I'd consider worthy of a listen, even though I probably haven't given it one (a listen, that is!) in 10 years or more. I think Power corruption and lies is their best and bravest, as in most experimental album. I remember not too long after its release, putting Brotherhood on repeat play, thinking that the songs are going to show themselves any moment now....they never did! If only the "songs" had been as good as the cover.
I was 15 when substance came out, blew my mind, what a collection of songs, vivid memories of listening to it on my Walkman on the way to college on the bus, I know it’s a greatest hits and cheating to say their best, but it’s just awesome, all their best songs in one place, and the ultimate mix of temptation
Thanks to Peter for being the most excellent bass player ever in a band that created some of the best electronic tracks with a bass mixed in. Perfect Kiss is truly an excellent example of what a legendary bassist can contribute to an electronic symphony of sounds and vocals. I miss Peter and the real New Order sounds just like I miss Alan classical influences on Depeche Mode. It was awesome and beautiful while it lasted.
Reminds me of an Newsnight interview with Johnny Marr, when he sought Paul McCartney's advice on the break-up of The Smiths, when he just looked up and said "That's bands for ya."
This music was central to the spirit of 80's dance clubs. In spite of the hardship sir, you've served up tracks of "substance" and put the "World in Motion"! Thanks!
Imo New Order were never the same after Technique. Republic was too glossy, at least it was still synthpop. Get Ready was too glossy AND an ill-advised attempt to play indie-rock. Sirens was a mess, some tracks were woeful. Music Complete had better production, but it was still a far cry from the masterpieces of the 80's.
Agree. Love some of the remixes that came with the intervening albums, but albums made after the move to London were a bit too style over substance. Music Complete was by far the best since Technique.
Very spot on, although I have to admit, in spite of all that had happened during the time period “Republic” had been recorded in, the album slowly grew on me 💙
Reading between the lines Hooky wants back in. I would like to formally volunteer to be the "head banger" if they need one. Come on both of you. Life is too short. Get back to what you do best, making the soundtrack to our lives.
Who knows who is wrong or right on the NO saga. I'm sure they all think, genuinely, they are in the right. Which means this sorry state of affairs will go on and on and on. But what a tragic story. They changed music, changed lives, including mine. - I saw Joy Division and it changed everything - and again when I saw NO, and to see them in this turmoil now is so sad!!
This tracks with various interviews I've read back when music magazines were still a thing. They've been in that "can't be in the same room" mode for decades. Peter had an online q & a back in the late 90s and was super surly when asked if they were getting back together. He said something along the lines of "snowball's chance in hell." It didn't hold but that happens. Bills. Even though I got into other things in the early 2000s, this makes me curious to hear the recent 2 albums just to hear the difference. It's been a while.
Wow, I can feel the passion and emotion in Peter. He says a lot of things relevant to many people. That immense pressure due to business arrangements would have been intolerable, it would have been a real struggle for each person, let's not underestimate their burden. Peter also referres to the legacy they have created, that is poignant, something that can get easily overlooked "in the heat of battle", to acknowledge it is a good sign. Sometimes though when all said and done with intense relationships, time to step back, try and put incidents/events/fights into the boxes, pop them on the shelf and move on. It must be very difficult to even contemplate that when so much has happened, how does a person "tidy up" after all that? The relationships seems to be very strained, which is understandable, in those situations it is better not to say or even imply any negative things about the other person but to concentrate on one's own efforts. Peter, tell us how exciting and interesting your latest project is. Not why it's better than NO/JD but how you have built upon it.
So sad. I actually love Republic, every track was brilliant and I listened to it over and over for months. I got all the 2 part CD singles. It wasn't their greatest album but it was one of their most commercially friendly upbeat albums. I'm sad to hear it was so bad for them
My sis and I had the privilege of meeting Peter and the band in 1993 after winning a contest to fly to Chicago to see New Order at the World Music Theater. One of the coolest moments of my life. Peter was so friendly and nice to chat with and we spent the whole evening hanging out with him.. New Order hasn't been the same since Hooky left. I will always love New Order but until they work out their differences and go back to the roots of the band, and make it about the music, New Order is not complete. They had such a special magical sound that only those 4 can send out into the universe. I hope to see them all together on stage again some day (and not just to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!)
God bless him for his wonderful honesty. I think this is what happens to so many groups rather they be siblings, childhood friends, total strangers or a combination. They are expected to record an album for 12 months of 16 hour days where arguments ensue, tempers are frayed and beautiful music is created. After spending all of this time with these people then you have to go on a 16 month tour with each other. Throw into the mix alcohol, drugs and record executives, I don't care how much you love each other at first you're going to hate each other at one point. We hope as their fans that they make up but so many don't.
I love the honesty. But, do people really need to know this? JD and NO are two of the most important and influential bands of all time. No one outside of those bands can can possibly comment. Anyone who's been in a band knows exactly what I'm saying. Anyway, Peter, you're one of the reasons why I picked up the bass and got into music. Thank you, Dave.
i was in a pub Hooky was in a couple of times and i was always too intimidated to go and say hello. I wish I had now, he seems like a really decent bloke
Hooky used to get In Johnson’s Bar in Deansgate Manchester in the early 90’s onwards . I went in once & he was chatting my former girlfriend up ( Respect models was around the corner it was their local) was Johnson’s the bar you meant Kris?
Peter Hook is and always will be the sound and soul of New Order.Without him they are never going to regain a fraction of the spirit that made their songs stand out.His bass drove the band.Sumner cut off his own nuts with his ego.
I wish we could hear Hooky's and the Other Two's version of 'Republic' so we could compare and discover how much was changed. Such a shame. Great interview, so honest.
I remember hearing in an interview with Hooky than when Curtis died the symmetry was gone. New Order became a great band, but I can't imagine Sumner taking over as much as he did if Curtis were still alive. So much of Joy Divisions music was based around the bass guitar, but with New Order it's based around synthesiser's and Hooky's bass was reduced to the odd bass solo during instrumental breaks. What i've heard of New Order post-Peter Hook sounds ok, but it's only New Order in name.
Bernard would have had just as much writing input, but as far as post-Curtis is concerned, if someone else was going to fill his void it wouldn’t have all come down to Barney. Has Hooky ever said he’d have done all the singing, and written some lyrics?
Indeed. You only have to watch joy division live performances on YT to see that symmetry, each band member were individually strong and stood strong on their own.
Hooky is a legend and all his points make sense. You need the friction sometimes but you have to remember you're all grown ups. So often in bands the stuff staring you in the face is shoved straight through the window, sometimes literally! You're not going to see or hear this kind of coherence any time soon from the Gallaghers!
I tend to side with Hooky, New Order ceased to exist in 2007, what we have now is two New Order tribute bands, Peter Hook & the Light and the other three who call themselves New Order. An essential part of the New Order sound is Peter Hook's bass without that they are not New Order. Why did Bernard Steve & Gillian not carry on as Bad Lieutenant which they were between 2007 and 2011.
@SgtBaker16 Is he, or like anyone does rent have to be paid and he's doing the thing he loves anyway to get that done? Go see PH & the light and after the 3 hrs is done you tell me it was just for money.
The current New Order is essentially a Bernard Sumner solo project. Stephen Morris makes no songwriting contributions at all, which is a shame since he was integral to a lot of earlier New Order tracks.
Its interesting how they all agreed that if anything happened with the original lineup in Joy Division the group would be finished. Those principles failed to hold up with New Order.
Interesting interview, its always good to see peoples perspectives and how they change as they get older. Hooky admits his part in the break up. These things are never one sided and its almost certain that there is much more to this. For me its the acceptance that its over and he was a factor in this that is so refreshing - Raymond
As your devoted fan I must say it was a real pleassure to hear your music in Wroclaw last Thursday. take care mate, wish u all the best moments in life
I'm guessing this is like, if the Beatles had reformed in 1974 with John, George and Ringo, calling themselves The Beatles again, refusing to include Paul. Can you Imagine Paul McCartneys reaction to that scenario? It's a damn shame, I grew up with New Orders records and I'm still a big fan of them all.
Yes if Lennon had hanged himself and Paul had then insisted on dominating everyone afterwards and refusing to play old songs. Hook likes Joy Division. So do I. He has wanted to play the songs for 40 years. And someone should play the songs before everyone involved is dead. Truth is, Sumner is jealous of a dead guy. He knows Curtis' songs are miles better than anything he has ever made. That's why I think he won't play them.
Makes sense because I just saw an interview where Hook was saying that it was a shame they never performed Closer, but I had assumed they played Joy Division songs because of the recent tours (so after Hook left)
Hooky has always given a very honest interview (seemingly, don't know him or what actually happened obviously). Bernard was the person that introduced the keyboards into JD and Ian loved it. It's a shame it's happened but i've seen videos of both new New Order and PHatL playing and Hooky really gives it some. You can see it's a labour of love with him.
Peter I totally agree with what you said. Music is so important to people and Joy Division started a massive influence of different bands , including New Order. I have always had great respect for JD for being so important to influence others. It's too bad New Order had to become something so corporate that they lost the true reason of why people listen to music. I'm happy knowing you had the balls to see it and moved away from the sterile thing that some big bands tend to become after massive success. Thank you Peter.❤❤💋
@William Yale He's barely a bassist at all. Not only is he not all that good technically but his "bass" tone is not low enough. At least Jean Jacques Burnel was a great player!
MisAnnThorpe are you joking around? Everyone has different tastes but Hooky has come up with some of the most iconic bass lines since the beginning of punk. Whether or not he’s “technically” the best is irrelevant
@@ubik_3786 Okay, I'll concede that he did come up with some insistent bass lines - when he was in Joy Division - but let's put an end to this nonsense that he is even close to being the best bass player....whatever that actually means. Have a listen to Mick Anker's playing on "Go Public", by The Blow Monkeys or Derek Forbes of Simple Minds on "Fear of gods". Now that's bass playing! Bernard Damon Albrecht Sumner is the best guitarist in the world though.
I have loved New Order ever since I heard Disorder from Joy Division. Loved Blue Monday, and I think it’s one of the greatest musical pieces in history. Loved Get Ready and Crystal is a song I listen to atleast once a week. After that there was a period of disappointment. When I heard Music Complete, it All came back to me with full force. It was exceptional for a band of that age to put out a record that I thought was up there with one of their best. It was their first without Hook. I have to say (and it hurts), but I think the space contributed to some great creativity on New Order’s part. They did a great job with Music Complete and I’m not sure it would have been so, if Hook and Sumner would have been in the same room. Sometimes, the greatest of minds, don’t always get along! What matters is what they do with that. New Order are still making great music... Not sure what Hook is doing.
I love Peter hook he so down to earth. He a guy you could just get on with because he so lay back. Great musician and great person who as not let fame change him. Good luck Peter in what you do mate.
Why I'm not surprise reading your stupidity? There are some truth in your explanation here, unfortunately you don't have the wisdom to comprehend what part is true what part is falls. I heard from many like you, the once think they know everything but they don't know any shit, Peter hoook is lost in his own mind. Showed me any part of your knowledge that truly make sens, give me any explanations than tell me here it is you are wrong man.
Yes John I have seen does calling themself "Michael Mitchell"before, There is reason Michael functions like that, how you can see he used negative & positive phrase to achieve that. My findings working hand to hand with yours on this, we can see how right pieces of puzzles coming together.
Sometimes bands, even great bands, need to just hang it up and retire. Close the book on an amazing career. REM did this. And as far as I am aware there was no falling out, they just knew that it was time. When I heard "Jetstream" for the first time, I knew it was time for New Order to hang it up.
@@sharksport01 I've never heard Jetstream but is anything, by anybody, worse than Shellshock or State of the nation. After those singles it truly amazes me that New Order's reputation remained in tact. True faith was poor too.
0:47 - That's really disheartening for me to hear. Republic is probably one of my all-time favourite records, period. It's really upsetting for me to hear that during the production of one of my favourite indie rock albums I've ever listened to, everyone in the band was at each others' throats and hated each other with a virulent passion. So many great songs on that album - Regret, Spooky, Liar, Young Offender, and Special. And now my enjoyment is tainted in a sense, knowing how unenjoyable the experience was for the band itself to produce it.
I don’t think it’s so much the being-at-throats thing so much as Bernard Sumner disregarding all of the work the other three did in the months beforehand and unilaterally creating a load of new solo tracks in the studio that the rest of the band barely appears on, and presenting it as a band effort. And then inevitably creaming off a much bigger chunk of the proceeds of what was a big selling album when the others were left with very little. According to Hook’s book about it anyway.
the story goes that the cheap amp they had in JD broke and couldn't play the lower frequencies anymore, forcing Hook to cheat and play higher notes. And then their producer heard it and said - keep doing it this way
I discovered NO in 1987. Back then I really enjoyed going through their back catalogue (Low Life, Brotherhood, etc) and then discovering the much darker and edgier Joy Division. Along with many bands (Depeche Mode, Ultravox, etc) I feel it's difficult for a band to survive decades of time together. Not only personally, but with musical direction. Certain musicians, ie Bowie adapted their music over several decades and most albums are still enjoyable. Eventually "creative differences" and personality clashes inevitably ruin the whole thing. It's a rare treat to have a band that has decades together and can still put out good albums. Along side of this, the music model today of "singles" one after another, rinse and repeat, ad nauseam. Only old dudes like me want to hear the whole "album". To reflect on Hooky's interview. I can't even listen to Get Ready or Sirens Call. Believe me, I tried really hard and after many listens of hoping I would begin to enjoy them and build an attachment, but the albums just fall flat. They just sound very vanilla and mainstream for lack of a better word. All good I still enjoy my beloved 1987 Substance double CD. Ceremony, Everything Goes Green and Temptation are my three most favourite songs from NO. They are the perfect combination of what NO is so damn good at....addictive high register basslines (thanks Hooky!) fast hypnotic beats (thanks Mr. Morris!) soothing synths and good lyrics and vocals.(thanks Barney). In the words of Geoffrey Chaucer, 1374. "All good things must come to an end"
Hopefully there will be peace one day. It all depends on Barney. Steve and Gillian are straight. They would play with Hooky again. Sounds like Hooky wants to play again under the right circumstances.I know Barney likes having all the control. But everone recognizes Hooky is integral to New Order's sound. They play the friggen guitar on "Elegia" without Hooky. That's just wrong.
What a bummer... looking for some music to go with videos I was thinking of making and I discovered this and led in by their story. I was in flight school when republic came out and I thought it was great! Brings me back and still listen to it. Had no idea all this was going on and wondered why I never heard from them. Being in America all this stuff is not played out like in the UK. Pity.....
This is a sad interview, and it is interesting that at 6:53 Hook invokes the spirits of Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, and Ian Curtis to try and make his case for being readmitted to New Order, I assume he is hoping the emotions invoked by the memory of their dead comrades will overcome Sumner's resistance. It hasn't done so far, but it gives an insight into the band's politics. I suspect Hook once thought there was more equality between him and Sumner than there actually was, but what was actually true was power in the group lay with Sumner and not Hook. Many people think there is no New Order without Hook, but there first post Hook record was actually quite well received, slightly better than their previous two records were.
Barney was my favorite member but I always felt that Hooky was a man for the fans. IIRC, he was the one back-cataloging NO's performances, he was the one who wanted to dig in deeper into their catalog for set lists, he was the one that wanted to tour more. I feel that after the break up, Barney only added the deeper cuts to the setlists to spite Hooky. I also feel Barney was the one watering down NO's music with lyrics that only got worse with each new album--not that they were the greatest to begin with--and increasingly added unnecessary backup vocals to every freaking song.
I saw both New Order and Peter Hook and The Light perform in 2018 and both shows were great. New Order did stuff from their entire catalogue, from the classics to their latest album. Peter Hook and The Light performed two sets of music from each Substance album, one set of songs from New Order's Substance 1987 and one set of Joy Division's Substance album. It was real treat to see Joy Division songs performed live by Peter Hook and The Light (who did an amazing job!), prior to the fallout between Hook and the others it was very rare for New Order to ever play a Joy Division song, only once in a blue moon when they did a rare encore (which they almost never do since they have always thought the idea of encores were insulting to the audience). Both New Order and Peter Hook and the Light concerts were great, I recommend seeing both if you can. It was nice to see this video of Peter Hook giving his side of the story, gives me more insight to why Hook and the rest parted ways. I would however, love to see them get together again, Hook was an integral part of New Order and it would be nice to see them perform all together once again. I only saw them as a full band once in 1993.
New Order is one of my favorite bands ever, but seriously after Brotherhood and technique it just went downhill, everything before then I consider almost perfect
He's right of course people change over the years. Your tastes change, your outlook changes, your friends change. You aren't the same person at 40 that you were at 20. It's a miracle that some bands last as long as they do.
All I know is that when I think of Joy Division and New Order, it is the bass lines that stick in my mind.
Totally agree. Peter's bass hooks are pretty iconic.

Even more than the guitar lines. Hooky was pretty unique that way first lead bass guitar player.

This series of interviews with Peter Hook has been utterly fantastic.
The Light is great live, NO nowadays… not so much.
As heart-breaking as being locked out of Costco? I didn't realise Peter Hook was a poet.
Not as bad as being locked out of Sam's Club 😉
I'm surprised Costco exists in the UK. Didn't think brits were into buying large quantities of crap like us yanks.

@@HaloAdmiral Well said, NO like Joy Division before it, is made up of the sum of its parts.
Without hooky New order is a shit cover band
"I really do wish with all my heart, that we could stop, and respect each other" Peter Hook (7:12) ... Agree
Same with Oasis and The Smiths
And like the Smiths, it's just not going to happen.
It's the Manchester curse. Luckily The Stone Roses have managed to avoid it and have had a great time reuniting (although they did mutually break up in the first place)

What do you mean? Are you saying New Order are chancers?
I've seen Hooky & The Light twice and they really give a fantastic performance. I'll always see PH &the light as long as they tour.
Same here! Great shows, and Hooky seems to get better and better on vocals each time, especially with those JD tracks!
I have the same opinion.
Hooky was the heartbeat. Without them, No Order is heartless.
His bass was the rhythm guitar. Bernard almost never plays guitar while singing.

Totally agree low life is their best work
Agreed, I take Movement's FACT.50 as my DJ namesake, but Low-Life is the best of both of their sides, upbeat/pop and dark/brooding. Face Up is probably the best example of both styles being blended perfectly.
@@thebarbaryghostsf Low Life is the last New Order I'd consider worthy of a listen, even though I probably haven't given it one (a listen, that is!) in 10 years or more.

Reminds me of an Newsnight interview with Johnny Marr, when he sought Paul McCartney's advice on the break-up of The Smiths, when he just looked up and said "That's bands for ya."
no segments on Brotherhood or Technique? my two favorites from them, probably
It would be like a dream come true if New Order made one last album with Peter. What a gift to the world that would be!
Love will tear us Apart, was a stand out classic track because of Peter Hooks classic ‘hook’. Period.
This music was central to the spirit of 80's dance clubs. In spite of the hardship sir, you've served up tracks of "substance" and put the "World in Motion"! Thanks!
I really like how Hooky is wanting to get back together, and they should. He seems reasonable and chill.
Well spoken Peter! Your music mean the world to many people.. thanks
DavidGolder your spot on bro!
Agree. Love some of the remixes that came with the intervening albums, but albums made after the move to London were a bit too style over substance. Music Complete was by far the best since Technique.
Bernard I hope you are listening to this.
Disagree on Get Ready .... groundbreaking, great production
Very spot on, although I have to admit, in spite of all that had happened during the time period “Republic” had been recorded in, the album slowly grew on me 💙
Regret is such a tune though...
An utterly breathtakingly magnificent tune.

Reading between the lines Hooky wants back in.
I would like to formally volunteer to be the "head banger" if they need one.
Come on both of you. Life is too short. Get back to what you do best, making the soundtrack to our lives.
Same, I plan to do it someday, I just need some time that's all...
You hardly have to read between the lines ..
FAMILY BACKBITING ,,THEN YOU CANT BACKSLIDE WHEN TEAMS ARE FORMED
I'm sad to hear it was so bad for them
It just shows even with all that pressure and tension, they still put out amazing music.
brought a tear to my eye listening to this! so much to give so much to go wrong!
anyone else notice how peter hook's voice sounds like his basslines ?
I met them all while roadying around the time of Power, Corruption & Lies and must say Hook was the most approachable/friendly of the four.
Was your sister good looking by any chance?
God bless him for his wonderful honesty. I think this is what happens to so many groups rather they be siblings, childhood friends, total strangers or a combination. They are expected to record an album for 12 months of 16 hour days where arguments ensue, tempers are frayed and beautiful music is created. After spending all of this time with these people then you have to go on a 16 month tour with each other. Throw into the mix alcohol, drugs and record executives, I don't care how much you love each other at first you're going to hate each other at one point. We hope as their fans that they make up but so many don't.
Thank you for the great music that helped me through many emotions...your music gave me a “language’ to understand that I was not alone, perhaps.....
I regard Hooky as the best musician and person from New Order. He is also so underrated and can sing quite good as well.
He's plenty talented as a bass player, and Monaco was all right. But have you ever heard Revenge? Pretty miserable.

Great interview, Hooky is a legend for every bass player I know. Hearing him talk about Costco is bizarre
You have my sympathy. May I suggest you change your bass playing acquaintances?
I tend to side with Hooky, New Order ceased to exist in 2007, what we have now is two New Order tribute bands, Peter Hook & the Light and the other three who call themselves New Order. An essential part of the New Order sound is Peter Hook's bass without that they are not New Order.
Why did Bernard Steve & Gillian not carry on as Bad Lieutenant which they were between 2007 and 2011.
Money
@SgtBaker16 Is he, or like anyone does rent have to be paid and he's doing the thing he loves anyway to get that done? Go see PH & the light and after the 3 hrs is done you tell me it was just for money.
We all do what we do for money as it's necessary to exist.
X900BattleGrape I know right? Some people act like a musician isn’t supposed to care about surviving.
Very illustrative, and straightforward I believe.
As your devoted fan I must say it was a real pleassure to hear your music in Wroclaw last Thursday. take care mate, wish u all the best moments in life
From the interviews I’ve seen, Hooky seems like the more genuine and humble person. New Order are nothing without his bass.
I'm happy I had the chance to see them
I'm guessing this is like, if the Beatles had reformed in 1974 with John, George and Ringo, calling themselves The Beatles again, refusing to include Paul.
But New Order do play Joy Division though... Or is it a recent thing?
They certainly never did in the 80s and 90s. Sumner is just super jelly of Ian Curtis is my take.
Makes sense because I just saw an interview where Hook was saying that it was a shame they never performed Closer, but I had assumed they played Joy Division songs because of the recent tours (so after Hook left)
Regret and Temptation are better than any Joy Division songs.

Hits it right on the head when he talks about the edge being needed in music. Seen a lot of bands fire members and lose the magic they had.

Wow!!! Such a candid discussion of their challenges.
And now my enjoyment is tainted in a sense, knowing how unenjoyable the experience was for the band itself to produce it.
read hooky's book. there were large amounts of alcohol, crack cocaine, and barbiturates being used during the album's production. quite sad to hear
Yes. I feel you
One of the greatest musicians of all time. 🙏
Aside that Bernie writes catchy tunes. New Order will never sound the same without Hooky's Basslines. I use to think that was a guitar.
the story goes that the cheap amp they had in JD broke and couldn't play the lower frequencies anymore, forcing Hook to cheat and play higher notes. And then their producer heard it and said - keep doing it this way
Who plays live for New Order in 2019?

Fair point. You are an incredibly talented musician who deserves the recognition and appreciation that is rightfully earned

Saw him play last night, he’s brilliant
Hopefully there will be peace one day. It all depends on Barney. Steve and Gillian are straight. They would play with Hooky again. Sounds like Hooky wants to play again under the right circumstances.I know Barney likes having all the control. But everone recognizes Hooky is integral to New Order's sound. They play the friggen guitar on "Elegia" without Hooky. That's just wrong.
No, what's wrong is having a "bass" tone which others feel can be legitimately replicated by the low strings on a guitar!
So who plays for New Order in 2019?
What a bummer... looking for some music to go with videos I was thinking of making and I discovered this and led in by their story. I was in flight school when republic came out and I thought it was great! Brings me back and still listen to it. Had no idea all this was going on and wondered why I never heard from them. Being in America all this stuff is not played out like in the UK. Pity.....
Fuck!!!! my favourite band!! its good to hear the reality xx
I still love Republic .... An amazing album with some haunting and powerful tracks.
Get Ready is such a great record
One of the greatest bassists ever
I thought Republic was one of the best albums ever made..
You thought wrong 😆
Definitely the last NO album.
He's right of course people change over the years. Your tastes change, your outlook changes, your friends change. You aren't the same person at 40 that you were at 20. It's a miracle that some bands last as long as they do.
He's right, they became 'Deathly boring'
Carsten Doig "Crystal" is a masterpiece.
wow, what incredible insight this interview provides. Hooky is quite articulate.
